USC silences the crowd’s shouting of ‘Fire Lincoln!’ with thrilling comeback win to repel Washington

USC rallied from a 21-10 deficit to beat Washington 25-21 as Jahkeem Stewart returned a fumble 48 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.
The comeback quieted “Fire Lincoln!” chants aimed at embattled coach Lincoln Riley as USC leaned on a late defensive stand to seal the win.
The Trojans’ offense struggled to find consistency, with Jayden Maiava passing for 245 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — The knives were already out. The boos were already ringing.
At the end of an already brutal week at USC, during which the nation was ready to dance on the graves of the Trojans and their coach, it seemed for much of Saturday that any last shreds of faith in coach Lincoln Riley might melt away in the beating Southern California sun.
Not only had the aftermath of their Oregon loss gone as poorly as possible, but now the Trojans were tripping over themselves again, trailing Washington, a middling Big Ten team down to its fourth-string running back, and a chant began to rise above the fray, from the USC student section.
“FIRE LINCOLN!” they roared.
That refrain had only been heard in hushed tones until this past week. But Saturday, before the Trojans pulled away with a 25-21 victory, it felt as if their embattled coach stood at the edge of a certain rubicon, one he may not return from with one wrong step.
That tension still hung thick over the Coliseum until late in the third quarter, when linebacker Elijah Newby came roaring around the edge toward Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr. He swatted the ball out of his right hand, and defensive tackle Jahkeem Stewart scooped it up. He rumbled 48 yards on a sore foot for the go-ahead score.
Just two minutes earlier, the Trojans had been down 21-10, and it wasn’t hard to envision how their season could continue spiraling from there. One mistake, one missed opportunity, one penalty after another brought them to this point, despite the fact that the Huskies actually struggled to move the ball on USC’s defense throughout.
It looked, for most of Saturday, like that unit took a step forward after the last two weeks, when both Rutgers and Oregon marched on them. Through one half, USC held Washington to just 44 passing yards. Through three quarters, Washington was averaging fewer than six yards per play.
USC’s defense nearly came apart in the fourth quarter, though, at the worst possible time. Washington hadn’t converted a single third down until its final drive, when Williams converted a third-and-11 pass, then hit a fourth-and-two bomb for 43 yards. The Huskies got as close as the USC 12-yard line, before the Trojans finally shut the door.
USC (5-1, 2-1) did try something a little different on that side of the ball, with defensive coordinator Gary Patterson calling the game from the press box instead of the sideline.

But the real concerns Saturday actually came on offense, where the Trojans uncharacteristically sputtered. Jayden Maiava was 21 of 34 for 245 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Trent Mosley and tight end Mark Bowman — who rank second and third in receiving yards — could not play due to injury.
Still, judging by the box score alone, you’d be hard-pressed to understand how USC could have nearly squandered a game in which they piled up far more yards (360 to 319) and had the ball for far longer (34:58 to 25:02).
After a disappointing few weeks on the defensive end, USC actually opened the game by forcing Washington (3-2, 0-2) into back-to-back three-and-outs.
But the Trojans managed a measly three points from those stops. Their first drive, sparked by a 35-yard King Miller rush, stalled in the red zone. The next one backed up USC to its own one-yard line, after wideout Terrell Anderson muffed a punt. The Trojans barely moved a few feet.
Washington took advantage of the field position on its next drive. Faced with a fourth-and-seven in USC territory, Williams slipped past pressure and scampered to a first down. It was the first sign of life from the Huskies’ offense, which found its way into the end zone four plays later.
Then, USC gave the ball right back. On the run, Maiava launched a pass off his back foot in the face of heavy pressure. It fell well short of its target and was picked off.
USC’s defense held strong, forcing a third three-and-out in the Huskies’ first four drives. And its offense finally held up its end of the bargain, with Waymond Jordan punching in an eight-yard touchdown.
Washington continued to struggle moving the ball, but mistakes from USC helped its cause. An illegal formation penalty wiped away a deep Trojan touchdown pass to Kayden Dixon-Wyatt. Then on the ensuing possession, freshman defensive end Luke Wafle grabbed Williams’ face mask as he pulled him down for a sack.
USC had more penalty yards (50) than Washington had passing yards (44) in the first half. And those penalties gave the Huskies life at the end of the half, as they drove the length of the field and scored again.
With a chance to regroup, the Trojans tripped over themselves out of the half, too. An unsportsmanlike penalty killed their opening drive. Then, Washington tight end Decker Degraaf caught a pass and took off down the sideline, running through two ridiculously feeble-arm tackles on the way to an inexplicable 42-yard touchdown.
Soon after that, a chant rang out from the USC student section: “Fire Lincoln!” they yelled.

But the Trojans’ offense mounted a 13-play scoring drive in response. Tanook Hines tore the ball away from a Washington defender in the end zone.
Less than two minutes later, Stewart scooped up the game-changing fumble and took off. His 48-yard return completed a 12-point swing for the Trojans.
Still, USC couldn’t put Washington away. Down to their last drive, the Huskies converted a third-and-11 and two fourth downs to drive deep into Trojan territory late.
But the Trojans’ defense held. Kameryn Crawford sacked Williams for a loss of six yards on Washington’s closing drive of the game to finally knock the wind out of the Huskies before a long last-ditch incomplete pass into the end zone.
And USC, at the end of a long, brutal week, breathed a sigh of relief.

My lucky USC t-shirt was in the wash on Saturday so I wore one that was untested. That one was deposited in the recycle bin immediately following the game. My sincere apology to Lincoln Riley, Gary Patterson, the USC football team, and the entire USC nation for the wardrobe malfunction. It won’t happen again.
OTOH, we “won” on Saturday; and assuming you wore your lucky shirt against the ducks and lost, I would say your uniform choices and their effect on the outcome of Trojan football games are rather ambivalent at best. Just sayin’😎
USC’s defense is rated 67th in the nation in total defense. They are rated 13th in the Big 10. The only ones they are ahead of them in the Big 10 are Illinois, NW, Rutgers and Purdue and those last 4 start with Illinois at 98th. We’re 96th in pass defense. Meanwhile, Michigan comes in with a new coach and their first year they are 6th in the nation in total defense. I guess we are better then the Grinch defenses but we’ve gone down since the Lynn defenses
All the observations I’ve read here last night and today are hard to dispute. Some observations are about execution ( Wash qb mis throws, etc ) or cultural / administrative ( Reilly is soft and gotta go, etc ). Yesterday someone mentioned our running game and why we can’t power run consistently ypc. In my section last night the fans were in no mood for Riley’s soft running approach. I agree. Over 75% of the time, the run play takes forever to develop thus the DL’s and LB’s all get their run fits, leaving the RB to slither for a… Read more »
I’m totally with you on Riley’s slow-developing run game attack. Yuk. He doesn’t know any other way, or I presume he’d change because its defects are so obvious and hurtful to the team’s offensive posture.
I wonder what Carson Palmer would say about USC’s offense if being honest? He’s a superstar, and such a fantastic rep of USC. Best prep QB I ever saw in person for sure.
Now it turns out he’s also immediately one of the best HS coaches in the country.
Last week when Carson Palmer ( along with Marcus Allen, Willie McGinest, Ronnie Lott ) introduced the team at the Oregon game, I thought about his greatness and how he’s arguably the best high school HC in CA and perhaps the nation. We need a tough, fundamentals, disciplined based coach, and hiring a former all star QB doesn’t typically fill that need, but there’s exceptions ( like Harbaugh), Palmer brings some things we need and one that’s hard to come by is someone who is a Trojan and knows it’s tradition of high expectations and execution.
You were at the game last evening? I have read that the stadium booed Riley and chanted “Fire Riley.” Is that true?
I have trouble booing the team because they’re just doing what they’re told, but I remember the fire lane signs and a plane flying over the Coliseum with a banner with Fire Helton. It’s not that we lose it’s how we lose.
We had a law professor who later became Dean of the Yale School of Management. He wasn’t well liked at SC, at least among my group, and it didn’t get any better for him at Yale. After a few years, those who wanted him gone hired a plane to fly over the Harvard-Yale football game towing a “Fire Levine “ banner.
I was there. Yes it was around the 3rd when the Huskies went 21-10. Had these seats since 2015 and I’d never heard what I heard. First it was boos, loud, which is not cool for these kids. Then the Riley chant started catching on. The truth is it lasted about 2 minutes then died out.
We are definitely at a turning point. USC’s brass heard the coliseum’s frustration. Should an interesting next few weeks.
I said it yesterday, USC needs a drama coach. They don’t sell fakes well, fake hand off, fake pass or fake trick play; nobody bites because they just look like half hearted moves. Also no selling PI by the opponent D backs. Wafle got flagged for a face mask penalty because the Washington quarterback knew to turn his head. The replay did how his hand across the helmet but it really didn’t look like an egregious pull, more like incidental contact. I don’t understand the illegal formation penalties from the stand point of being halfway through the season and still… Read more »

PN4SC, Parcelman, ATL DDS, Volunteer Trojan and Steveg you all correctly identified the status of team play. And it is troubling to say the least. Yes, if there weren’t so many penalties things would have been different but if the “Husky QB had thrown catchable passes throughout the game to “open receivers” that too would have affected the end. Washington has a very poor offense that allowed us to stay in the game. There again is not and isn’t allowed to be anymore a moral Trojan victory here. The next games on the schedule will again uncover the true picture… Read more »
We’re not going to beat PSU. They’ve lost 2 in a row. They are not going to want to lose 3 in a row especially in their house. Again, we’re playing on the road where we generally don’t play well. The bottom line is that if Stewart doesn’t score that freak TD….we lose to Washington.
Playoffs? Bowl eligibility is the better question. This is a typical Riley team. No discipline or accountability. Mediocre defense and special teams at best. He is the constant, and needs to go, SOON!
We’re not going to make the playoffs this year. So if that is the criterion for whether LR comes back or not, then…..Attention Jen Cohen……start doing your research for who our next HC is going to be.
Riley is no messiah. Patterson is no savior. Ekeler is not special. Maiava is no Heisman candidate. And the Trojans are not playoff material. The WA qb was missing wide open receivers all night. Had he just been more accurate throughout the game, his team would have won outright. That WA 40+ yard TD run tells us all we need to know, other than what in the world this team does with its practice time. USC is no better than they were last week, last month or last year. They have reached their ceiling with their delusional head coach, and… Read more »
What do you think would have happened had the Trojans not committed those stupid fouls that cost them so dearly. I thought the defense played pretty well, the discipline is terrible, and Maiava certainly is nothing more than mediocre with an occassional pass to a very good receiver making himself look better than he is. No, this is not a playoff caliber team, simply not sure if it can be.
If memory serves me right, that 40 yard TD run could have been a replay of the similar one that cost us the game against Tulane in the Cotton Bowl, and a similar play against TCU in the Alamo Bowl last year. Undisciplined players trying to make arm tackles and deliver lazy bumps along the sideline. Any player on a tough disciplined team who wanted to STAY on that team would have wanted to hit that ball carrier hard hard enough to bounce him into the 909 area code. But all we get to do as fans is put our… Read more »

SC has the talent, but lacks discipline and focus on game day.

Great question. They may not have needed to mount a 2 TD comeback late in the game.
I don’t know what would have happened, so could we just have one clean (doesn’t have to be perfect) game so we can find out?
