No. 18 USC football hosts Washington in vital get-right game
The Trojans and Huskies are coming off Big Ten losses, amplifying the spotlight on what should be a scorcher Saturday

WASHINGTON (3-1 overall, 0-1 Big Ten) at USC (4-1, 1-1), Saturday, 4:30 p.m., Coliseum, NBC (Ch. 4)/710 AM/USC by 9.5

Washington: OUT: RB Jordan Washington (neck), WR Christian Moss (quad), RB Jayden Limar (elbow), RB Quaid Carr (hand), S CJ Christian (Achilles); QUESTIONABLE: C Landen Hatchett (wrist); PROBABLE: CB Emmanuel Karnley (soft tissue).
Haley Sawyer (OC Register) — Washington football coach Jedd Fisch couldn’t hide his dry sense of humor when he was asked about the triple-digit temperatures the Huskies are expected to play in against USC on Saturday at the Coliseum.
“We’ve been doing hot yoga every morning at seven – I’m just kidding,” Fisch told reporters.
“The only thing we can do is hydrate, trust our preparation and hope that we’ve done a good enough job in the offseason getting ourselves ready.”
The Huskies (3-1 overall, 0-1 Big Ten) could be out of their element between the weather and playing on a grass field, but they’re looking for the same thing USC is: a bounce-back win that rights the ship for the rest of the Big Ten Conference season.
Washington is coming off a 27-24 loss to Minnesota and No. 18 USC (4-1, 1-1) just lost to Oregon, 41-27, which turned up the temperature on the hot seat that head coach Lincoln Riley was already sitting on.
A dominant, get-right game against the Huskies could put Riley in a more favorable light with fans and the administration, at least for the time being.
“Winning breeds confidence,” Riley told reporters. “And then you’ve got to do everything that you can as a leader to create the opportunity to win, and you create the belief even sometimes before some of those things happen.”
This will be the first road game of the season for Washington, which has 39 players from California on its roster. It will also be its first game of the season on a grass field as opposed to the artificial turf that the Huskies are used to.
“It’s going to be exceptionally manicured,” Fisch said. “Coach Riley wants to have a fast surface. He doesn’t want to have a slow surface. This isn’t like playing some of the Big Ten schools of old back in the ’90s when they would water that field and see how high they could grow the grass. We’re expecting them to have Augusta-like greens.”
When Washington has the ball
The Huskies’ offense runs through 5-foot-11, dual-threat quarterback Demond Williams and Fisch, who calls the plays as the head coach and offensive coordinator. If the offense doesn’t fare well Saturday, it could indicate a rough rest of the season for the team and Fisch’s job security.
Williams is completing passes at a 69.3% rate and has thrown for 1,129 yards and seven touchdowns with three interceptions while rushing for another 155 yards and two touchdowns.
The Huskies’ offensive line has been shoddy at times and allowed Minnesota’s defense to sack Williams seven times last week. Center Landen Hatchett, who is a game-time decision due to a wrist injury, could help solve that problem if he returns this week.
USC’s defense has yet to fully come together in Gary Patterson’s first season as the Trojans’ defensive coordinator. Communication breakdowns hurt them against Oregon and have led to opponents breaking off too many chunk plays. In the passing game alone, USC has given up 47 plays of 10 yards or more.
Injuries have also kept the defense inconsistent. Jahkeem Stewart returned last week after dealing with a foot injury, but the Trojans lost fellow defensive tackle Alex VanSumeren due to injury at the end of the game. He’s questionable for this week, along with nickelback Alex Graham.
USC will also be without middle linebacker Desman Stephens II, who is serving a one-game suspension due to his celebration following a late hit and disqualification for targeting on Oregon quarterback Dante Moore.
When USC has the ball
The offense is drastically outperforming the defense. Quarterback Jayden Maiava is leading the FBS in passing yards (1,499) and passing touchdowns (14), and his two primary targets are freshmen phenoms Kayden Dixon-Wyatt at receiver and Mark Bowman (questionable for game) at tight end.
“I think that sometimes what gets lost when you don’t win a game is – the sky’s not falling. There’s a lot of good,” Riley said. “The fact is, we need to do a few things a little bit better, and we’ll get paid off for it, but now, there’s so many young guys stepping up playing big in big games.”
Wide receiver Trent Mosley, another freshman who burst onto the scene, is questionable this week due to an undisclosed injury. If he’s out, it will be his third consecutive missed game.
King Miller has taken over the running game with 421 yards and three touchdowns on 77 carries, followed by Waymond Jordan’s 233 yards and one touchdown on 46 touches.
USC’s defense is giving up explosive plays almost as much as the offense is creating them. The Trojans have completed a Big Ten-leading 26 plays of 20 yards or more and they’ve had 30 rushing plays go for 10 yards or more.
“We’re not going to go in there and play scared and keep everything in front of us and play some bend-but-don’t-break defense,” Fisch said. “We’re going to play the ball and try to be physical at the point of attack when the ball is in the air.”
What’s at stake? Lincoln Riley’s job and standing with USC fans is highly insecure after failing to capture a needed signature win against the Ducks and struggling to establish a defense, even with the help of defensive coordinator Gary Patterson. The Trojans have given up 26 points or more in every game this season except for a shutout of Fresno State in Week 1. Jedd Fisch is also facing early pressure due to an offense that hasn’t scored more than 24 points in a game aside from its 48-16 victory over Eastern Washington, an FCS team.
Who’s better? USC far and away has the superior offense in this matchup, but its defense has been a liability as usual. What’s new? The Trojans have struggled both in pass coverage and against the run, making the Huskies’ dual-threat quarterback, Demond Williams, a real challenge.
Matchup to watch:Demond Williams vs. USC’s pass rush. This is a quarterback who can do a lot, and the Trojans’ defense will have to communicate effectively and play as one if they want to contain him. USC has given up 47 passing plays over 10 yards this season, and Williams is averaging 8.2 yards per pass.
USC wins if: The Trojans’ defense needs a breakthrough, and fast. Washington’s offensive line has allowed 10 sacks this season, so the game could be under control early if USC can get to the quarterback — which it hasn’t done all year.
Prediction:USC 28, Washington 21. The Trojans get the bounce-back win, but not without a few scares.

We tried to give that game away in the 1st half, with some incredibly stupid mistakes. Some positives, but negatives too. I am going to enjoy this win because it may be our last until Maryland.
The stupid mistakes ( illegal formation, personal fouls, etc) are a reflection of our coaching staff being too casual.
Well we knew our safeties would be a liability in the pass game this season. We don’t have a true free safety on the team. Unfortunately it’s showing up tonight.
FIRE THIS FRAUD! We have superior talent and they are playing like 2 star players with no heart. The O-Line has no push. Maybe if they put their hand in the dirt like a real linemen they would actually get some push off the line. This team is not going to beat any ranked teams this year.
USC needs a drama coach. They don’t seem to sell the fakes or draw penalties. King Miller got the same tug on the face mask as Washington’s quarterback but Miller didn’t turn his head.
Seems strange, Miller has established himself as the best running back, but they keep putting in Waymond for him. Put Alson in if you want to give Miller a break.
sorry guys I really enjoy this group but I can’t watch another minute of this disaster that is a Lincoln Riley coached football team. See you when we get a new coach.
Now let’s surprise them with an onside kick!

5 sacks, not bad. Especially as elusive Williams was.
Minnesota actually sacked him 7 times
USC avoids another typical Lincoln Riley heartbreaker loss. “A little too close for comfort,” says a USC friend.
A lot of stupid undisciplined mistakes like lining up 3 times with more than 4 people in the backfield.
Been a long time since we beat WA at home.
With out 4 stupid penalties it would have been more decisive.
Finally in the right place at the right time
Color me wrong! Just hung on. Whew!
FINALLY!!!
Let’s Go Defense!!!!
We are gonna blow this one aren’t we.
Not this time for change.
Crawford finally shows up. It’s about time.
Kam Crawford???? Finally

those two missed extra points would sure look good right now
I wouldn’t believe it if I didn’t just see it. USC football. For the tormented only.
Let’s see if Patterson can keep UDub out of the end zone.
I am all for putting in Jonas at QB at least he can run.
Well another blown special teams play
Trojans have some bizarre self-defeating performance syndrome. Team needs a shrink.
I cannot believe these players cannot lineup correctly. Its like its their first game.
I believe it’s the same way they have lined up all season, but Fisch put a big in the referees ear before the game.
coaches should have told the players to adjust, but this is a Riley team
Great play by Alex Graham.
Waymond Jordan — King of the 1-2 yd runs for a 1st down tonight. Nice job.
Beautiful catch! Great drive, USC has a pulse.
Tanook Hines sure got off with that offensive PI.
Refs have money on the game
I think you’re right.
Hey, UW is a totally mediocre team coming off a brutally bad loss to MINN at home.
USC should be cleaning their clocks. I’ll be elated with a one-point win. We lead 22-21 with 2:35 to go in the 3rd.

Gary Patterson in the box! USC’s secret move of the week. Thanks for the heads-up RialtoTrojan.
Riley is in full panic mode
Lincoln Riley is a No Trick Pony
Both two-point conversions fail. At least we tried.
two PATs would make this a 3 point game. That could bit us in ass later.
WTF is Riley calling on pat.
Another penalty but not us.
Ya baby! Oh, wait. Another flag. Could it be possible? Well, it’s only sideline interference. Thank god the TD wasn’t called back.
So glad we have a special teams coach. He stopped if he hadn’t his momentum would have carried him.
A very good defensive play with a flag

Nice catch Hines!
He totally outfought the UW DB for that. ✌
Did the juice boxes get quietly discontinued? Seriously I haven’t seen them🤔
I always thought they’d get retired if USC lost to ORE. We shall see.
I didn’t see them at the Oregon game, either. Maybe they got squeezed out of the budget.
Another Maieva throw off his back foot
Waymond Jordan just isn’t the same. Put in Riley Wormley.
Both teams are playing like they are still members of the PAC12.
Extremely disappointing. But wait til next year! National Champions!
That has to be the USC Defensive Play of the Year.
Where’s the Trojan Juice Boxes when you really need them the most? 😂 😂
sorry guys I really enjoy this group but I can’t watch another minute of this disaster that is a Lincoln Riley coached football team. See you when we get a new coach.
Riley may have lost this team.
FIRE LINCOLN RILEY TONIGHT!!!
IT’S NOT TOUCH FOOTBALL!!!
That is totally disgusting
I still think they should have let Maiava go to the nfl.
