-
Desman Stephens’ egregious hit on Dante Moore sent the Oregon quarterback to the hospital before No. 12 USC went on to lose 41-27 to the No. 20 Ducks.
-
USC’s latest loss another reminder of what the Trojans have been unable to achieve since Lincoln Riley vowed to turn the Coliseum into a “mecca of college football” in 2021.
-
The Trojans managed to keep pace until late in the fourth quarter when they failed to respond to a pair of Oregon touchdowns, giving the Ducks their fifth consecutive win over USC.
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — It was nearly a half decade ago that Lincoln Riley, dressed in a slick blue suit and glossy cardinal tie, stood atop the Coliseum’s rooftop deck, grinning as he gazed out across the field below. He’d just been introduced as USC’s new head coach, and in that moment, anything felt possible for the future of Trojan football. Riley, at the time, was one of the most renowned young coaches in college football. And as he surveyed the scene, he painted the picture of a day when the Trojans were back on top and the Coliseum was hallowed ground once again.
“This place,” Riley said that day, “is going to be the mecca of college football.”
But less than five years later, as final seconds ticked away on a 41-27 loss to Oregon on Saturday, fans trudged toward the exits, and that very same stadium sat in hushed disbelief. The Trojans’ season wasn’t over by any means — not after a single loss to No. 20 Oregon — but in that moment, the future that Riley had envisioned felt as far away as ever.
There would still be chances for Riley and his Trojans to make their statement this season. But the stakes on Saturday had arguably never been higher for USC’s coach, who spent all offseason explaining how this season would be different. There were no more excuses, no more explanations for why USC was still falling short — even he seemed to agree to that. Everything he’d been pointing towards in the distance was now here, culminating all at once.
With a gauntlet of a Big Ten schedule ahead, there was no better time for Riley to prove he had USC moving in the right direction and no better matchup to help catapult the Trojans into College Football Playoff conversation than Oregon, its newest — and still maybe most bitter — rival. The whole college football world was watching, waiting to see if USC’s coach could deliver in the most critical of moments.
Instead, the Trojans found themselves in an all-too-familiar, all-too-painful position, one they’d experienced many times before during Riley’s tenure. Mistakes piled up. Ill-timed penalties too. And worst of all, USC’s defense still couldn’t get a stop. It gave up 504 yards to Oregon, the third-most it had allowed over the past three seasons.
The Ducks would score on six of their last seven drives, almost all of which featured their backup quarterback at the helm. That was after Oregon star quarterback Dante Moore was knocked out of the game early in the second quarter following a brutal hit by USC linebacker Desman Stephens II. The hit started a shoving match between players from both teams.

Stephens, who was seen celebrating after the play, was kicked out of the game, but remained on the sideline in the second half.
The play would cast a pall over the whole game, but replacement Dylan Raiola managed to throw for 289 yards and two touchdowns against USC’s defense. Jayden Maiava, meanwhile, had 326 yards and two touchdowns, but completed just 23 of 42 passes.
The rushing attack wasn’t much better, as the Trojans averaged a mere 3.6 yards per rush.
The afternoon began on a bitter note for USC. After marching down the field on a 13-play opening drive, a third-down sack forced the Trojans to settle for a field-goal attempt. But Caden Chittenden missed an easy kick wide right. It was just the latest in a string of recent special teams slip-ups for the Trojans.
The defense, however, would hold early. Even after Oregon running back Jordon Davison burst out of the backfield for a 45-yard run on the Ducks’ first play. Oregon finished that drive with a field goal, the only points either high-scoring offense managed in the first quarter.
Unable to get anything going on the ground, the Trojans turned to their stud freshman receiver to pace the offense. Five of Maiava’s first seven completions went to Kayden Dixon-Wyatt, one of which came on a 31-yard strike down the seam to the freshman, who reeled in a touchdown despite tight coverage.
Oregon was mounting a response when Moore took off on a quarterback scramble. But as he slid, Stephens decked Moore with a direct hit to his helmet, even after he had already given himself up. Moore spent several minutes on the field before being loaded onto a cart and taken to Los Angeles General Medical Center by ambulance.
Raiola, the backup, would take the reins of Oregon’s offense in Moore’s place, leading the Ducks to the doorstep of the goal line. But once again USC’s defense stood tall in the red zone, holding Oregon to a field goal.
It wouldn’t have as much luck in the second half, as Raiola found a rhythm. He led the Ducks on two consecutive touchdown drives in just 11 total plays.

Regarding the buyout for Riley, maybe it could be negotiated to spread it out as long as USC can get away with, say 10 years instead of the 5 remaining on his contract. Assuming he wants to still coach, USC could lobby hard to help get him an NFL OC job, that salary would offset what USC owes him. He doesn’t have the personality to be on TV so that’s out. He acts like he doesn’t care about coaching, certainly not winning. I could see him take his family and generational loot and ride off into the sunset.
Several years ago there was something I heard but can’t remember from who…..his plan was to move to Hawaii once he was done at USC.
Aloha Riley!
I remember an article where he thought in 10 years he would leave coaching and do something else. But then how much work would he have to do the rest of his life with all the money USC pays him.
Reportedly Sitaki turned down a nice pay raise from 9.5 million to 10 million plus from Penn St to stay at BYU. I wonder if he’d consider a warm LA as better. Nobody would mess with him. Don’t know much about his coaching.
He seems to be very content at BYU, he is a morman.
Yes….probably need a gun to get him out of home.
BYU boosters put up enough dough to get him to stay. So would be expensive if he would even come.
Could Jenn get DeBoer to leave Bama, or would Chesney drive cross town.
Here’s my wish list for fantasy college football this season. In a surprise move an NFL team comes looking for an offensive coordinator and Lincoln Riley asks for an unconditional release from his contract. USC signs a former unnamed Alabama head coach to a one year $million contract to finish the season after the bye week. USC responds to the new coach in ways which haven’t been seen since 2010. Dan Lanning chokes in San Diego while gloating as he’s trying to poach a valued 2027 recruit. They rush him to a concert. Lincoln makes a name for himself working… Read more »

Pretty funny! My fantasy too.
Cowherd Evaluates Riley USC honk Colin Cowherd — “USC is an immature football program. They’re a little too casual. Too sophomoric. They’re a little too high school for me. Do you think Curt Cignetti would have a sideline that looked like USC’s? No, and any guy called for a foul like Desman Stephens was should be sent to the locker room. Indiana is a very mature football team, unlike USC. “USC doesn’t have a lot of self-awareness. Too much ego, and too casual. Lincoln Riley is now 5-15 against AP-ranked teams. That is just not good enough. He’s not really… Read more »
Here’s a run at projecting how the season will play out based on LR’s historical results against ranked teams (5-15) and Big10 teams(2-6). Notice the winning percentage is the same. Washington Penn State Wisconsin Ohio St (5th) Indiana (6th) Maryland UCLA (23rd) 3 ranked teams left, so he wins 1 of them. 5 P10 teams left, so he wins 2 of them (1. being generous 2. not counting WA and UCLA as B10 teams). 2 of the 5 B10 teams are also ranked. Already beat a non-ranked B10 team, so not increasing win count based on that. LR wins at… Read more »
Untrained but very reasonable.
😂
We lose road games at PSU and WISC. We lose to IND & OSU at home. Washington is a tossup. We lose to ucla. But hey we should beat Maryland.
A bit more pessimistic. And also from untrained eyes. 🤣
What should USC do….. I would give a million dollars to know what Jen is thinking right now. We could still make the playoffs……Allen picked up how some teams look softer than projected……..what if Oregon committed one turnover or two? We probably win. If the 4th (or 3rd) and 7 had worked……it’s potentially a tied game at home with 4 to 5 minutes left. This was no blowout…..against one of the best teams (Raiola elevates them greatly) in the country. Riley needs to go no matter what happens, unfortunately he’ll probably be retained if he makes the playoffs…..but I hope… Read more »
I would never fire LR during the season. We would lose a good offense(to go along with a bad defense) because he is a good OC. But after the season, I would think seriously about making a change. LR is getting hammered from all directions. His former critics are blasting him. His former allies are also blasting him. They’re all saying that he can’t coach. How does that look to a recruit. Do you want to commit to a coach that everyone is saying he can’t coach? Clay Helton originally recruited well. Then(because of the media) the recruits started to… Read more »
This one hurts …
Blake Toppmeyer (USA Today) — “If you’re interested in winning football games and (you’re a recruit) from this area, you should go to Oregon,” Dan Lanning said after improving to 3-0 against Lincoln Riley. “If you want to go to a Chris Brown concert, you should go here.”
That’s a mic drop. It’s also just the facts.
Riley’s Trojans still can’t win the big games, and he’s going to waste another season with a star quarterback, while USC’s supporters head for the exits.
usatoday.com
LR should have answered Lanning by saying “if you want to go to a concert or go to the beach to surf or body surf or go to the desert to dirt bike or go skiing in the mountains or hit thousands and thousands of nightspots for entertainment in the most beautiful weather in the country in a community of ethnically diversified population and play football for a school that will eventually get to the top with or without LR…..then come to USC. If you want to go to a top notch academic school where a degree is actually worth… Read more »
Lanning totally owns Riley on the field and enjoys giving himself a football advantage whenever he likes, and it’s his competitive prerogative to send messages through the media to recruits. In fact, that’s his job, and he does it much better than Riley. Face it. Riley’s been a bust as a coach at USC, regardless of USC’s academics, location, tradition or other great advantages. You may not think so, but a lot of us fans as well as the media do. I’d take Lanning in a heartbeat as the coach at USC over Riley, who’s a big talker, but as… Read more »
If we’re smart, we’ll make him a gonner at the end of this season. Will that happen….probably not.
It’s a sad situation at USC football for all involved. I wish both the football program as well as Lincoln Riley and his staff the very best going forward. Whatever happens, Fight On! Better days will eventually come.
I wish him the best too. I was never one of his critics. I was always one of his supporters. He had some good things, namely on the offensive side of the ball. I was hoping he would evolve in the areas where he was weak. Then something happened…REALITY. This guy can’t coach. For me the change came in the Rutgers game. That program was abysmal. I thought we would win by 50. Instead, had it not been for the pick 6, we might have lost that game. Let me ask you a question. If we go 7-5 this year,… Read more »
I do think if the Trojans actually lose five games, LR will be forced out, especially if we lose to UCLA and their new coach Bob Chesney. But I don’t think we’ll lose five games. Some of these teams on USC’s schedule are just not what we thought they would be. UW just lost to MINN in Seattle. ORE’s obviously very beatable. PSU just lost to WIS in Beaver Stadium. Even OHIO ST already has a loss. Yet at this time, only MARYD looks like a sure thing to me as a USC win. But if USC somehow beats either… Read more »
I’ve always said that they should have went outside the program and hired a highly accomplished O-Line and D-Line coach instead of hiring from within. Before the season they were talking about the D-Line being the best in the Big 10. So far, against just one really good team, they have 8 sacks in 4 games….nothing to scream about. Where’s the developement? I could see them possibly losing to PSU, ISU, OSU, Wisconsin and UCLA. If they played the Bruins next week I would take the Bruins. I can’t help wondering what Chad Bowden and Jen Cohen(two very win oriented… Read more »
I can’t believe I’m saying this too. But it’s what I believe based on what I saw on Saturday. Suddenly #23 ranked UCLA would beat USC on the field if they played today. Bob Chesney’s approach to building an entire team (and its culture/staff, etc) is simply superior to Lincoln Riley, who emphasizes QB focus and greatness over everything else. Just look at where each has succeeded and with what players. UCLA’s QB is no way as good as Jayden Maiava. He’s just not. Yet UCLA plays cleaner, tougher ball, with a punishing, downhill ground attack, and when backups come… Read more »
On this years 2026 team, USC has 39 four stars and 4 five stars. UCLA has 18 four stars and 1 five star. That should tell you something about the coaching.
He’s lazy. He wants to go home to PV and count his bohner dollars. He won’t go out and get any coach that would outshine him. I suspect Patterson was hired because he was a F O L.
Yes it’s too good a story for the media to pounce on the hit & sideline reaction which brings up a point….. where the heck were the team leaders or even the coaches grabbing Stephens and telling him to cool it? And telling the teammates around him to cool it? I kept waiting to see a coach come over to him and address his behavior and it never happened with the TV cameras rolling. Another issue with our coaching staff leadership.
Wow, the media sure is killing Lincoln Riley and USC over last night’s defeat. Ruthless.
And Lanning is feeling his oats taking a swipe at USC. It was a slap to Riley’s face that recruits shouldn’t bother going to USC.
Even the most talented Lincoln Riley team still can’t figure out how to tackle Stewart Mandel (The Athletic) — USC’s Lincoln Riley and Oregon’s Dan Lanning took over their respective teams in 2022. Riley arrived with great fanfare after taking Oklahoma to three College Football Playoffs, while Lanning had been a largely anonymous defensive coordinator at Georgia. Riley started strong, taking the Trojans to the Pac-12 title game in his first year, but spent the next three sputtering. Lanning’s Ducks, on the other hand, became national title contenders. But after a 9-4 finish last season, Riley declared, “A window here… Read more »
I’d sure like to know what’s going on in Jen Cohen’s mind about now. I have enormous confidence in her leadership and her decision-making and planning ability.
She’s got a huge Trojan football puzzle to solve. Thank god we don’t have Mike Bohn (resigned May 2023), or some of our other ill-fated Trojan family ADs to worry about at this stage.
Cohen will figure out how to handle Riley’s situation, if she hasn’t already. USC’s bootstrapped by a massive money obligation. But these things have a way of working themselves out once a direction has been decided.
She has given Riley everything he needs to be successful and I too have faith she will figure it all out. I do not envy her position right now though. 75 mil for Riley, plus all the staff that will be let go. Not cheap. Then hiring won’t be cheap either. With the lack of respect for USC around the nation, it may be hard to find a really good replacement for Riley. Not impossible, but not easy. Of course, $$$$$ makes things easier.
Maybe USC should stop just trying to throw money at the problem. Try the UCLA method. Focus intensely on getting a guy who knows how to build from the ground up, and not on some big rep candidate. I know, easier said than done. But something’s gotta change because what USC has been doing just hasn’t been working.
All it takes is one donor who had a good year in the market, as many have, to write the check. Who might it be?
I like you, have a lot of confidence in Bowden and Cohen. Based on what you know Allen, are we looking at a situation, where the buyout is too big, and we have to wait another year,or as you said, things will work themselves out? I am praying for the latter.
You might be surprised to know I think waiting until after the season is best. The cake is baked for this season. Hopefully, Jen Cohen is hatching an escape route for USC unless LR runs the table and gets into the playoffs. No sense to rush into things further just now because the Ducks beat USC like most of us expected. JMHO.
There are more than a few posters that have been really hard on Riley, convinced he can’t run a program. After watching last nights movie( which I have seen a dozen times before) I must admit they were right.Riley can’t build a program, he doesn’t take responsibility and sugar coats the situation, just like Helton. Why didn’t he banish Stephens to the locker room, after that thuggish display after the hit? Why are our defenses bad, no matter the DC? I t all points back to Lincoln. I see USC fighting for bowl eligibility this year, with only one more… Read more »
No one is happy to hear you had to decide this. Pretty sure most hope he turns our program around. Unfortunately it is what it is. If it happens, let’s hope we get a great new head coach as soon as possible that can apply all the advantages of the USC brand and run our program successfully. Fight On!
Evidently Moore is in concussion protocol. No other issues found.
Good. Too bad his injury really overshadowed the game, and brought such negative attention to USC. Not really fair IMO, based on how poorly one player handled the aftermath. Of course LR denied knowing anything about it in real time as he usually only seems to pay attention to his playbook.
Plus the injury to Moore really served to fire up ORE even more. From some things I’ve read from Dylan Raiola, the Ducks used the incident to their competitive benefit.
We shot ourselves in the foot, Dylan handled our limited pressure like a pro. 19 out of 25 with 2 TD’s. No interceptions or fumbles…..which is saying a lot considering one snap nearly sailed over his head.
The rest will evaporate as soon as the point spreads for next week are issued…..aside from the fact we are still stuck with our grand head coach.
Ya, and what’s with USC’s no sacks problem? I still think Trojan football has a big culture problem, resulting in disastrous mistakes on the field which hold Riley’s teams back. JMHO.
Riley has some good players…..IMHO that is part of the problem…..when it comes to elite we have Stewart…..next year as far as QB pressure, Brown arrives….if he is healthy and can play college ball, his combination of raw speed, quickness and smarts ought to make a difference as an elite player. If he makes starter, can handle the run and has some help it could make a difference. When a DL is vulnerable to the run….and plays in a run oriented conference…..the coaching has no choice but to make them overly sensitive to being run on. We play VanSumeren…a good… Read more »
Moore is overrated. Oregon would better served starting Raiola.
It didn’t make any diff IMO. Either Duck QB was going to beat us — in our house too.
Do you get the sense that the LR era is slowly ending now? Something just feels different after the loss last night. There’s a certain resignation to the fact that LR simply cannot fix what is wrong with USC football. JMHO.
SC’s offense is doing fine. If you just take the first 5 running backs they’ve carried the ball 156 times for 829 yards. That’s over 5.3 yards per carry. Obviously their passing game is among the best in the nation. Even with thee 2 sacks early against Oregon, SC QB’s have been sacked only 4 times and 2 of those may have come against the 2nd string offense.
The problem is the same as it has always been….the defense. So far we’re worse than we were under Lynn.
I don’t believe USC’s OL is very good at run blocking. Lots of crap run plays based on what I see with my own eyes, regardless of any stats or numbers. If you want to see a strong running game, watch UCLA. They’re much better and more power-oriented. Bigger holes. Better drive blocking. More consistent. USC’s running attack involves much more pulling, misdirection and slower development. That’s just Riley’s style and when the chips are down against good people, Riley’s USC teams usually can’t run worth a darn. He cleans up on cupcakes. Always has. Always will. I don’t remember… Read more »
It was hilarious listening to the game announcers tell us that Riley loves to run the ball. He is great at it. Comes up with great running plays. etc etc.
My hogs were envious at the pile that was created.
The run game could be better but 5.3 per carry is not bad. Ryan Dyrud said that the roughing the passer at the end was a good call because their helmets touched. I’ll have to look at that play again but as I remember, their helmets barely touched. Riola didn’t hit the ground in any way. He was barely touched. Does the rule say that you can’t even touch the QB? If that’s the case then it’s a bad rule. No one player should have that kind of protection. The rest of the players are getting their bodies pounded. Should… Read more »
USC didn’t lose the game because of the refs. Not even close. You and I can just agree to disagree on that. ✌
I also was very disappointed in the Trojan run game. I’ll trust my own eyes, as well as what the runs actually accomplished in terms of setting USC up for the 14-pt loss ORE handed to us.
I guess I just don’t think that most refs would have made that call in that particular sensitive situation that could turn the game around. JMHO
It’s possible that due to the Moore hit earlier in the game, the refs had a heightened awareness for helmet to helmet contact.
The running game doesn’t look fine to me. In five games not a single run longer than 30 yards. Was there any opponent that didn’t have at least one run that long.
Worse, Waymo’s longest run all year is 16 yards.
no explosive plays, no consistent five yards on third and three.
Waymond lacks a little bit of his old juice, it seems to me at least.
But the 1st 5 RB’s are averaging 5.3 yards per carry. That’s not bad. If that’s not good enough for you then maybe you agree with me in what I have always said, namely, that they should have gone out and hired an accomplished O-Line and D-Line coach rather then hiring from the inside. As far as I am concerned, the main problem here is the defense.
The defense is regressing to Grinch-level.
I agree that it is regressing. I disagree about the Grinch level. I don’t think that it will ever get that low.
I now believe what Joel Klatt says about our inability to develop a physical penetrating D-line: that it’s due to Lincoln Riley’s finese offense that the defense practices on week in & out. We are into our 3rd DC Riley has brought in. 3- different style & attitude coordinators and the results are the same. No penetration by our D-line, the linebackers don’t attack, they read & react most of the time too late. This allows the opponent’s O-line to control the LOS giving their QB to pick apart our DBs & safeties. It’s the same story game after game.… Read more »
Who cares if Patterson stays, or Riley at this stage?
Gonna be a long, possibly very grueling haul. But I’m still very excited to see how this season pans out for USC. Lots can happen, and I expect it will!

I am pleasantly surprised…..still 18!. With plenty of winnable games ahead to earn some respect. The playoffs are still available if we have one of those days and knock off one of the top 2. No turnovers last night…..if Oregon had a fumble and interception?????
I don’t think USC will earn any respect as long as LR is HC.
Only one team in the poll that I do not agree with is ND with their pansy schedule. They only have to be a medocre team to qualify with a schedule like that.
MIA, BYU and SMU could all beat them. One can hope. BYU gets them in Provo. That’s a can’t miss game for me.
They better pay attention to what they are doing across town! Hiring Chesney was a huge hire, and removing Jarmon was also, then filling the stadium via student free tickets, right now they have a better product than us with far less talent!
Here’s Desman Stephens trying to restrict himself to a shoulder hit. I don’t believe this was as blatantly a targeting hit as others do. Bang, bang, and definitely a late slide contributed. What’s a defender supposed to do? Stop in mid-air?
But Stephens’s behavior after the hit was the crime. Trojan players should be carrying themselves better, if he is any example.
It wasn’t blatant targeting especially if you seen it on the big coliseum screen. Not even close but the refs felt compelled. The behavior afterwards is not good.
Event, plus reaction equals outcome.
The reaction here was the big problem.
Absolutely. That’s what it was.
This should have been a personal foul unnecessary roughness penalty with an additional unsportsmanlike conduct penalty!
This is what I hate about the targeting rule. Too often the refs react to the emotions of the crowd when it is called.
Ya, it’s a frustrating rule that is obviously hard to apply consistently well. Lots of calls I don’t necessarily agree with from the cheap seats.
But with the nature of hugely publicized head injuries in football, and the extremely negative consequences of CTE, “targeting” is now a very important part of the game that needs to be enforced. JMHO.
Lincoln Riley is not a serious head coach. He doesn’t instill a sense of toughness in his team. Probably cause he was a QB. QBs don’t have to take near as many hits as the rest of the team. Lanning, Day, Cignetti are serious and instill toughness in their teams. USC under Riley will continue to wilt in the 4th qtr to teams with toughness. I see the rest of the season like this, UDUB and Maryland likely wins, SUCLA a tossup at best, Penn St and Wisconsin 4 qtr fade road losses, Ohio St and Indiana are losses, 7-5… Read more »
Golden…..you summed it up very well. Thanks for the great post. As for the playoffs, Lets continue to have hope. You are right Illinoisusc, the B1G kinda looks wide open right now. Ohio St looks the most dialed in, otherwise it’s a toss up who will be a playoff team. All the more frustrating to have a Riley led USC team. A well coached USC with the current talent would be playoff bound this season. We can always hope but we know what we have with LR. This is not a playoff worthy USC team. Road losses to good teams, lose to very good teams at home, barely get by with everybody else. Maybe what’s needed is a players only… Read more »
We are so close (yet so far) in spite of carrying Riley…..we make that 3rd and 7 or 4th and 7 and go down and score and it’s tied with us being at home. I’m not too concerned if LR loses the locker room. The way I see it now, he may never have had the locker room in the first place.
If changes are made, some bad, collateral stuff can’t be helped. I’m okay with all of that. But I doubt we’ll see any changes this year. Still too much cash needed to fix the problem, not just with Riley, but with the entire staff and huge admin support.
So what you are suggesting is that some admin jobs and the whole coaching staff need to go…….is that correct?
Can’t say I disagree but as you say……it’s a heavy lift.
Sure wish I knew what his contract provisions might include.
Not really trying to suggest any changes mid-season. I’m just saying that when Riley is finally cut loose, a lot of others will have to be paid off too. New HCs want their own people, both in admin and staff, as well as players. Does Riley even have any other defenders any more? I see a lot of people jumping ship, like Marc Kulkin (WeAreSC). BTW, Desman Stephens has been suspended for one game. Seems fair to me, for his behavior. Stephens — “I want to sincerely apologize for my actions during yesterday’s game. I had not heard the Stephens statement……thanks! It was the right thing to do. As for his suspension…..ok…..hopefully he learned something. As a minimum, Riley should have gone over and represented our team or maybe the team captains and expressed condolences…..but…..it’s in the past. Hopefully Moore has no long lasting issues. God bless him. I don’t follow Kulkin much as I like to hear objective news……I view him as… Read more »
Sorry, the apology is bullshit, a one-game suspension is bullshit, and everything about last night, that his, the reaction, etc. is bullshit. I didn’t buy Riley pretending he didn’t understand a simple question – why did Stephens remain on the sideline. I didn’t buy the offseason hype, which is why I was kind of scarce around here over the summer. I didn’t buy the claims of improvement after the last few games, and I’m embarrassed to be a Trojan today. I am not overreacting. That’s it for me. I appreciate you all and this blog, and all the work people… Read more »
I doubt he wrote a word of it, nor was he the one to initiate this. This is pure damagcynical by higher ups. Sorry to be cycnical.
It is obvious he took ownership of it all. Perhaps it was written for him, and perhaps he was told do this or else. The fact remains, he stood up and did it, and takes the punishment. What else should they do? He screwed up, and he is taking his lumps. I keep thinking about those that think they never f up.
My point is that I’m not impressed. He’s not owning it if he was made to do it. “They” should levy more than a 1 game suspension on this clown. To be clear, I’m not chastising him as much for the hit. It was his behavior afterwards. That showed his true character, not the scripted next day forced reaction.
I guess we simply see it differently, not a big deal. It will be history in a couple of weeks.
This could be a disasterous season. I can see them losing 5 games even if they are close in all those games. There’s just too many really good teams on their schedule. If they were to go 7-5 after all the improvements that SC has made, I wonder what the administration would do. If that happened, there will be a river of kool-aide about how 2027 is going to be different just like there was every other season that LR has been here and yet it hasn’t happened. Just look what UCLA is doing with far less talent. In 2… Read more »
“River of Kool-Aid”, or is it the “River of No Return” It’s gonna be a very interesting next seven games. I figure Lincoln Riley has hit bottom at USC. He loses big to his crucifier, Dan Lanning, for the 3rd straight time, in the Coliseum again against a 2nd team QB while a USC player gets publicly excoriated for a dangerous tackle and another gets called for a game-changing and unnecessary QB hit that leads to a door-closing Duck TD. Some would say there’s nowhere to go but up from here. Others say USC could and will sink a lot… Read more »

last night the Coliseum was on fire. USC fans were packing the stadium, loud as I’ve ever seen. USC even added more fireworks than a typical game. Duck fans attendance numbers didn’t overwhelm or match USC’s as happens with many big games. We were ready. But nothing changed. Weak defense, no qb pressure, USC RBs struggled finding a couple of feet to run through, sideline leadership was nonexistent as Riley’s nose is always stuck in his play sheet, hardly looking up to praise or admonish player performance. Same old same old. What’s Jen Cohen to do? Beg administration for a… Read more »
That’s such a valid observation about Riley and his play sheet, always in his face. I know it’s easy to pile on the guy now. He just lost another big one, the biggest of his USC career. Sorry Lincoln. You wanted to job, and you got it. But Lincoln always seems like he’s in his own head all the time, disengaged from others, distracted by what he’s got to decide in the next 10 seconds that can’t wait. He’s aloof to the point of recklessly ignoring his own players who are right in front of him. I don’t think this… Read more »

Geez…..last place! Oh Well……maybe I need to hire Riley to help me.
Went out in a blaze of glory, or was it gorey.
I realize passing is exciting and the scores are great TV. I also realize everybody is screaming our defense lost the game. They certainly contributed. a great deal. USC had 120 yards running last night with a 3.75 per carry average……when you can’t run and have to depend on passing to move the ball…..with a weak defense…..you’re handing the keys to the other team. Ball control (what the heck is that with Riley) is a key to winning with a weak defense, even with a great defense. USC had 5 yards on 11 attempts rushing in the 1st quarter. We… Read more »
USC could use a DOFE (Department of Football Efficiency) to clean up the waste, fraud, and abuse in the program. Where’s the Elon Musk of football when we need him? Jennifer?
Morales’ article summarizes Mike Bohn’ REVENGE
Im sure Bill Plaschke is salivating while writing his next USC HIT PIECE !
To say that I am past tired of this same old story would be a vast understatement.
Different year, same problems for Lincoln Riley Antonio Morales (The Athletic) — This is Riley’s 10th season as a head coach. The bad defenses that plagued his Oklahoma teams and his USC teams persists. At this point, Riley’s teams are what they are. Why should anything different be expected? The Trojans once again faltered on defense in a high-profile game. USC was lit up by replacement QB Dylan Raiola. And whenever the Trojans needed a timely stop, they couldn’t get one. Riley went for it on fourth-and-7 from midfield down seven points with seven minutes remaining — a clear sign he… Read more »
