The Big Ten is set to announce that they will resume play in mid-October!
Now the Pac-12 sits alone as the only Power Five conference that couldn’t figure it out. Can and will always blame this on Calif government, I suppose. So typical of the conference USC is stuck with.
Allen, I realize we see this a bit differently, but I do not blame the CA government for this problem; it is squarely on the present SC administration. I checked and both the Rams and Chargers were able to obtain exemptions. Thus, IF SC wanted to play, it could have. ND lead the way for the midwest to start playing. I am convinced that ND choosing to play is forcing the Big 10 to change its stance. IF the present SC administration made it clear that SC was playing this fall with or without the Pac, I think things would… Read more »
@TrojanRJJ I never said I would blame California government for the Pac-12’s failure to begin football at least as early as the Big Ten does. I said Larry Scott and the Pac-12 would (and already has) used this as an excuse to sit on the sidelines. But one point on which we do disagree on however is your feeling that Scott is an “extraordinarily politically astute” commissioner. I don’t see him that way at all, which is one reason he has been mercilessly hammered in the press for his frequent bad decisions and leadership. Just because the Pac-12 presidents have… Read more »
I think Scott is extraordinarily astute. He figured out how to play the Pac Presidents council. And, he “won that set 4-0.” I agree he is an egotistical bag of wind and totally incompetent at his job, but he figured out how to play the only audience that mattered to the tune of tens of millions in his pocket. For me, that is “astute” and given how much money he pocketed, I call that “extraordinarily astute.”
Why are you labeled “extraordinarily astute” just because you play paddy-cake with a bunch of presidents who don’t pay enough attention to college football, or demand much? Seems like a heck of lot of people could easily do that if motivated. Call me unimpressed.
although I will always advocate for SC to leave the Pac-12, I think it is highly unlikely that happens. but there are plenty of changes that could dramatically improve SC’s situation, while it still remains in the Pac-12. but i think that the key is that SC needs to field a CFP level team as soon as possible, and that Helton is simply incapable of getting that job done. the lack of effective recruiting on the offensive side of the ball is getting dangerous, and it should be much better this year, since Harrell had a chance to prove that… Read more »
Ju Ju Smith-Schuster makes an incredible fumble recovery for the Steelers against the Giants. He’s such a winning, heady player, always ready to contribute in every way possible. Sure was a fantastic Trojan. His one-handed catch along the sideline in the Rose Bowl was so typical of his wide-ranging skills.
Shortly thereafter, a relentless Leonard Williams makes a huge sack on Roethlisberger.
Trojans on both teams showing up very well.
U.S. News and World Report ranked USC in a tie for both the 24th-best university in the United States and the eighth-best college for veterans. The USC Marshall School was ranked eighth in accounting, tied for 10th in entrepreneurship and tied for fourth in real estate. In addition, USC was listed as the top university for the best online master’s in business programs (excluding MBA), in business programs for veterans and in computer information technology programs. The graduate school rankings listed the USC Marshall School at No. 17, the USC Rossier School tied for No. 11, the USC Viterbi School tied for No. 10… Read more »
Thanks John, I needed something positive about USC today.
Those great rankings for Marshall show again how disgraceful it was for Caruso and Austin to force out Dean Ellis.
@redonbob I sure wish I knew why Dean Ellis was forced out. Do you know why? Does anyone here know why, or is it just a giant Trojan mystery?
The only people who know for sure are Caruso and Austin, and maybe Quick. The reasons given don’t stand up and Ellis says he doesn’t even know.
Thanks. It’s just bizarre. So much of what has gone on negatively at USC (and all for massive public consumption) over the last several years has simply bamboozled or disappointed me.
While #17 is good, I’m not sure it is actually great as a ranking. The new dean came from Wharton, which is tied for the #1 program in the country, so we are upgrading from a mid-tier dean to a top dean in the country. I agree that the way Dean Ellis was forced out was reprehensible. It shows exactly how Caruso is an oligarch who runs the BOT at his whim. But the end result will probably be higher rankings in the coming 5 years. USC has other programs that are ranked in the top 10 or even higher,… Read more »
Clay Helton finally found a way to get off the #1 position of the Coach’s Hot Seat list.
With USC on the sideline, Bleacher Report has a new Hot Seat group:
Out of sight out of mind….
Darnold Starts Out Poorly Against the Bills Yahoo Sports — Jets quarterback Sam Darnold hasn’t developed much since he was the third pick of the draft. It’s hard to say if that’s on him or a poor situation with the Jets, but clearly coaching and roster construction around him hasn’t helped. Darnold doesn’t have much talent around him, and it’s not like Adam Gase is getting the most out of the talent he does have. Still, Darnold threw an awful interception, drifting to his left and throwing back across to the middle of the field, that no NFL quarterback should… Read more »
Sam is on a terrible team and has no help. but he just is careless with the football. He hasn’t changed at all. His flashes are amazing, but he kills his team with poor decisions.
I’m a huge Darnold fan and have always thought he’d be good in the NFL. But you’re right. He’s still the gunslinger supreme who makes big mistakes occasionally (too often).
The article also states: Does Trevor Lawrence like New York? And who will be his coach?
Yahoo Sports
He needs a premier coach to hone his talent.
@Chris Ya, I feel a little sorry for Sam. He’s going nowhere fast with the woeful Jets, again. After seeing the poor way he started this season, he may just slip into oblivion with Adam Gase and the Jets. Now he’s got to worry about the Jets and a new coach drafting another QB to replace him. Anyway, the clock is ticking away now for Sam to show he can start improving. I thought we might see some of that yesterday, but instead he just reinforced the recurrent negative parts of his game. I’m kind of shocked actually. I’m still… Read more »
I’m sorry to say I had trouble getting excited by NFL football. Making boring football even worse was the choice by CBS to add canned crowd noise in an obviously empty stadium. The voice of the commentator was overtaken by the crowd tract but didn’t reflect the tone of the man’s delivery.
Currently watching Slovis taking Stanford to school. Much more fun.

Sources: A comprehensive plan has been presented to the 14 Big Ten presidents/chancellors today, with an emphasis on medical protocols that have changed in recent weeks and are available to the league. No timetable set on vote, but expected soon. There’s a lot of optimism.
Larry Scott said the following in his most recent comments on whether the PAC 12 might reconsider playing football sooner, “Until we get the blessing of (health officials), I’m not even going bring it back to (presidents, chancellors) to review. Hoping that happens by the end of the month, and then we can revisit and set a new timetable.”
Doesn’t even remotely surprise me. Pac-12 got left behind, as usual.
Just waiting on the Big Ten now, which is at least trying.
I am so embarrassed by USC and the PAC-12 as they are currently constituted. As far as what I said about My Alma Mater, I cannot believe that feel that way.
It’s not just that ATL — the entire “BRAND” has been seriously damaged since USC was sanctioned re: the Bush Fiasco. Then we had to live thru all the sexual scandals, then the recent bribery for securing athletic scholarships for non-athletes with connected parents, and now we have the 3.5% tuition increase when all the students get for the increase are on-line classes. Oh yeah, then Max Nikias is forced out, but he keeps his office and housing — and remains on the BOT — brilliant. So if perception means anything, some would say his influence is still present and… Read more »
Ronald Jones is looking great running the ball for Tampa Bay against New Orleans.
I heard Austin Jackson is getting praise for a great first game. Congrats to him.
