USC football focuses on accountability, fine details during spring practice

“It was a good message from some of our staff and leaders in terms of the approach that we need to have every day that we come out here,” Trojans coach Lincoln Riley said.
A sentiment that was shared by junior defensive tackle Jide Abasiri: “We just have to be better prepared.”
After the hiccup, Riley said the team responded well and it was back to business.

After a spirited day on the field on Tuesday following a one-week spring break, Wednesday’s practice was scripted with the intent to cause stress and create discomfort — stacking multiple two-minute drills after a 6 a.m. team meeting. The goal is to build a no-excuses program.
“It’s invaluable time, invaluable reps,” Riley said. “Coming out and working plays and the techniques, great. When you start putting those guys in real-life situations and you make it really difficult on them, you really start to see who rises up and they’re great teaching moments for these guys and for the team in terms of what we want to be and what we want them to be.”
Regardless of the mental challenges Riley applied, the Trojans’ morale remains positive as players compete for spots in the lineup. The energy of the team comes from within, Riley said.
“It allows us as a staff to really hone in on pushing these guys, and coaching and critiquing and correcting,” Riley said. “And they’re taking it well.”
Attention to detail has always been important at USC, but Abasiri said this year there is an extra emphasis being placed on play-specific details. The staff has implemented drills that focus on a player’s specific movement or job during various plays.
Entering his third season with the Trojans, Abasiri said he felt like he needed to be a team leader. USC landed the No. 1 class in the nation for the first time since 2006. With so many new young players joining spring practice and a limited number of Trojans with three years of experience, Abasiri felt it was his job to lead.
“Just being an older guy, I feel like it’s important for me to … help them just come along,” Abasiri said.
So far, his advice has been to “just have fun with it.”
“I mean, obviously, stay on top of everything and all your stuff, but I feel like people get so stressed and so caught up in what they’re doing that they forget that this is supposed to be enjoyable,” Abasiri said.
The coaching staff, meanwhile, is balancing teaching schemes and the playbook.
“You have to be able to do both at this level,” Riley said. “The new guys that came in did have a pretty good foundation. A lot of them came from really good programs. A lot of them had a pretty good working football knowledge to where when we got started with them, it wasn’t like you felt like you were starting from literal square one.”
Return game is still unsettled
USC is still working to identify its top kickoff and punt return options.
“We haven’t done a lot of live returns yet,” Riley said. “We’re just trying to figure out who really fields the ball well, who understands it, who makes decisions and honestly, the returners, they’re showing us a lot of what they can do just in the offensive and defensive periods.”
The coaching staff has a pretty good idea who some of the best players in that position are, but at the moment, they just want to develop the skills, from a return standpoint.

#9 (Baseball America) USC beat UCSB 7-6 at Dedeaux tonight, bringing the Trojans to 27-3 before the series against #1 UCLA (26-2) in Westwood this weekend.
UCSB (16-10) coach Andrew Checketts turned down the USC job before “Stanky” took over in 2023.
27-3……..not bad for a program that is still in the building stage
Looks like a wet one at Dedeaux Field tonight.
Indiana’s QB, Miami’s pass rush, Texas’ O-line: 1 key question for each 2025 AP Top 25 team per The Athletic’s Manny Navarro USC’s schedule includes the following three Top 25s: 1 IU (Nov. 14, Bloomington) — Can Josh Hoover adequately replace Fernando Mendoza? Mendoza completed 72 percent of his attempts for 3,535 yds, 41 TDs and only six picks to lead the nation in passing efficiency. The Hoosiers signed several quality offensive playmakers in the portal, but the key to the season will be whether Hoover can cut down on his mistakes. Only two FBS QBs (Joey Aguilar and E.J. Warner) threw more picks over the last… Read more »
I’d forgotten how great Joey Browner (RIP) really was. Did you know these things about Browner’s accomplishments at USC: 1) 1982 Team MVP: Honored as the Trojans’ top player, despite playing alongside future Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, Dennis Smith, and Jeff Fisher. 2) Versatile Performer: Known for both hard-hitting safety play and lockdown corner skills, Browner led USC in pass breakups and was also an exceptional run defender. 3) Elite Stats: Finished with 243 tackles, nine picks, 40 passes defended, and seven fumble recoveries. 4) All-Pac-10: Earned All-Conference and all-coast honors. 5) Winner: Played in USC’s 1980 17-16 Rose… Read more »
I just read the Joey Browner passed away. He was 65 years old. This means (to me) that he played football at USC when I bought season tickets for my parents instead of them buying tickets for me. Still I remember those days when we had a defense that knew how to stop the pass.
He had 5 brothers. Three played in the NFL. I’m pretty sure 2 played at ND.
Ross Browner was one of the ND players–I remember he was a thorn in our side for 4 years….
It sucks that players I watched when I was a student at SC (’76 through ’83 football seasons) are dying–especially when they are younger than me.
March Madness rarely includes USC
USC men’s basketball has advanced beyond the first round of the NCAA tourney only 5 times in the last 25 seasons.
2001: Advanced to the Elite Eight (Regional Final)
2007: Advanced to the Sweet Sixteen
2009: Advanced to the Round of 32
2017: Advanced to the Round of 32
2021: Advanced to the Elite Eight (Regional Final)
The Trojans have appeared in the Final Four only twice in program history: 1940 (eight teams made the entire tournament),1954 (16 teams in tournament).
USC has never played in a NCAA men’s basketball national title game.
As you know, USC is primarily a football school, when compared to basketball, with elite credentials. In just a year or two hopefully, we will add to the impressive record again. The recruiting is off the wall great right now. Hopefully we can keep and develop this treasure box of talent. As for basketball, better stick with football…..the BIG is a nightmare for mid to lower level programs. Not a lot of great teams lately but really deep with good teams. Hopefully Illinois can scrape by UCON…..I have little hope for playing Michigan or Arizona……just hope it’s not a blowout…….and… Read more »
Would you call Michigan a football school or basketball school or both? I like my cake and eat it too! Football, basketball, baseball, nattys in all! 😎
You just got my blood boiling……Michigan is definitely a football school……with a strong basketball program…………they have won one NCAA title in basketball…..you might not remember that year……1989……..they stole (ok won) the title from the Flying Illini……I was at the game in Seattle……one of the best teams never to win the NCAA. In the Final four we lost by 2 points to Michigan because we shot 25% from 3. The Illini had Kendall Gill, Nick Anderson, Battle, Hamilton and Bardo. Sort of like that Texas game USC played a couple decades ago in football. I hear most Michigan grads are……LOL…..pick one….… Read more »
I can’t believe UCONN came back to beat DUKE 73-72. The Blue Devils were winning easy and totally dominating 44-29 at half, when I stopped watching. What a comeback!
Bad day overall for Duke fans. At half, their women were beating UCLA 39-31 and managed to fall apart and get blown out 70-58.
When I checked and saw the score we watched the second half on tape……..UCON missed just about every 3 until the last two……and Duke turned the ball over time after time on a variety of things.
IMO Illinois has a good chance against UCON…….then things might not be so good against the better teams……unless we drop a ton of 3’s.
I’am hoping Michigan breaks the BIG drought.
Wow. How about your amazing 6-6 frosh guard Keaton Wagler?! Out of nowhere he comes to lead the Illini to the Final Four, your first since 2005. I love these rare stories of lowly-recruited guys who shock the world and suddenly buzz saw their way through college basketball or football. Good luck against UCONN. ✌ They seem to specialize in wearing teams down. The Huskies have such a winning, composed culture. I still can’t believe how they pulled off their DUKE miracle. People seem to love to see the Blue Devils lose. Hopefully, you knock UCONN off and play MICH… Read more »
The funny part…..which is not funny……Underwood recruited another Serb player named Petrovic who is 6′ 3″. . He was going to be paired with our PF, C and SF all with Croatia area names. Petrovic was supposed to be an above average PG and the starter. He has a ton of experience in Europe. His 3 was a bit weak, in the low 30’s, but according to inside word was getting a lot better with Illinois coaching. We paid him a nice check. Underwood’s kid who acts as an asst coach was out in Kansas for another reason was watching… Read more »
Sorry to trigger that painful moment. I do remember 1989. I woke up and suddenly I had a wife, 2 kids, a mortgage, partner in a business and about to start on a 2nd masters degree. I asked myself where did the last 10 years go! But I digress. I vaguely remember Michigan got some bogus break by the refs to win the NC over Seton Hall. Michigan had 3 one point wins in the tournament. It did lead to Steve Fisher eventually coming to SDSU and turning them into a basketball school.
My godfather told me that retirement is like a second childhood. So far……he has been correct. Hopefully you feel the same.
Thanks for bringing up the game……memories are a large part of what it’s all about at our age and I had a heck of a good time at that game…..aside from the loss.
It’s a second childhood for sure especially when there are grandkids to play with.
I have been a long suffering USC basketball fans since about 1970. This sounds crazy, but the program is cursed( and I don’t believe in curses). Too many crazy things have happened over the years.
Bob Boyd Days, stole one at Pauley with the “slow play offense”.
USC (25-3) has opened up a 7-1 lead over MARYD in the second inning with no outs.
Update — final: USC, now 26-3, wins 14-4; mercy rule invoked.
This is what we use to expect from the baseball team before they went into the dark ages.
Keep it going and Beat the Bruins!
The baseball team is surging back. But as for next weekend, I hate having to say this, but ucla looks every bit like the #1 team in the land.I think we will be doing OK if we don’t get swept.
Much better pitching today, the best in a week. Gave up 28 runs in the last 4 games prior to today. Gonna need their best this next week.
Spot on GT. Our pitching had been so good, but is now abandoning the team. One of our relievers came in to pitch in the 7th, and I swore he was throwing batting practice. 3 batters, 3 runs. They better figure it out quick, or they will be enduring a long losing streak with what they will face next week. They have to win today.
USC baseball’s pitching is tanking. Gave up 10 runs and barely held on 11-10 yesterday and lost today 4-6 to 11-14 Maryland. Need a win tomorrow. #1 UCLA is next week.
Yeah….what has happened to their pitching?
Marv Goux — intensity personified
He used to call his lineman “big turds,” but I really believe it was out of affection for his charges.
2028 Chandler Hamilton (AZ) four-star WR Roye Oliver III (5-11, 165) commits to USC Being the son of a Sun Devil didn’t slow down Oliver from committing to a hot Trojan program, and becoming their first 2028 commit. He could reclassify for the 2027 class. Oliver, the Gatorade State Player of the Year, just picked USC over offers from ALA, ARIZ, ASU, ORE, UCLA and TEXAS. “Coach (Chad) Savage was the first coach to offer me [at CSU], and I said wherever he went, I’d keep them in my head,” said Oliver. “I have a lot of trust in him because… Read more »
This kid ran a 10.9 in the 100 meters as a 9th grader as well as catching 43 passes for 861 yards and 11 TD’s(again as a 9th grader). He was the Arizona state middle school champ in the 100 and 200 meters as an 8th grader. They have him listed as 5’11” and 165 lbs but I’ll bet he is still only 15 or 16 years old. I’m betting he’ll be bigger by the time he gets to SC. They need to hang onto this kid because everyone is going to be coming after him
Thanks for sharing.
The B1G has six teams in the Sweet Sixteen:
ILL, IOWA, MICH, MICH ST, NEB, PUR
Tough road ahead for Eric Musselman.
USC lost to ILL 101-65, IOWA 73-72, MICH 96-66, MICH ST 80-51, NEB 82-67 and PUR 69-64.
Any of those top ten NFL teams would benefit from Makai Lemon.
I’d like to see Lemon go to the Rams. Puca Nakua, while immensely talented and productive, can’t stay out of the headlines for off-the-field statements or interactions.
The 2026 NFL Draft will take place from April 23–25 in Pittsburgh, PA (NFL Network, ABC, ESPN). This is the first time Pittsburgh has hosted the event since 1948.
The first round of what is not a very exceptional Draft is on a Thursday (5 PM PT), rounds 2–3 on Friday (4 PM PT), and rounds 4–7 on Saturday (9 AM PT).
Who will draft USC Biletnikoff winner Makai Lemon?
