Whicker: USC’s Life of Riley might not come sooner
With all the celebration over Lincoln Riley’s hire, the Trojans won’t gain the physicality they need overnight
Mark Whicker (OC Register) — Like all coaches, Lincoln Riley will need some adjustments.
His family has dogs named Boomer and Sooner, named when it seemed Riley was an Oklahoma lifer. Reportedly the new names under consideration are Folt and Bohn.
And, on some L.A. mornings, it will sometimes take Riley 38 or more minutes to go eight miles. That was not a problem in his previous hometowns, none of which were more populous than Lubbock, Texas. (254,000).
Then there’s football. On Saturday, when he watches Donte Williams coach his final lame-duck game at Cal, Riley will learn that his Mecca Project might not be accomplished in a fingersnap.
The Trojans must win to go 5-7. If anything can motivate the underclassmen, it should be Riley’s glare from upstairs, especially since real players from elsewhere are gathering outside his door like a line for the next great cellphone.
Riley might feel like throwing about 30 of the remaining Trojans through the transfer portal without opening the door first. Bad penalties and lukewarm effort are not tolerated in his world.
By now, Riley realizes he will need a massive influx of big folks.
Daniel Jeremiah, former scout and current Chargers’ radio analyst, shares the “Moving The Sticks” podcast with Bucky Brooks, another ex-scout. Earlier this year, Jeremiah talked of meeting a colleague who was on the Coliseum sideline before a game.
“I looked at USC and I couldn’t tell who the defensive linemen were,” the scout said.
Oklahoma had five first-round picks when Riley was the head coach. All but linebacker Kenneth Murray (Chargers) were quarterbacks and receivers. However, Oklahoma had four offensive linemen drafted in 2019 between Rounds 2 and 4. Bobby Evans of the Rams was one of those.
Defense never was Oklahoma’s meal ticket, but the 2019 team ranked 29th nationally in points-against. Riley is bringing defensive coordinator Alex Grinch, who was Washington State’s defensive boss when Mike Leach was there and knows how to breed physical defense while practicing against the daily ballet.
It will help that Riley is stomping into a Pac-12 that has devolved into tapioca. Washington is changing coaches, Arizona State is being investigated, and Cal, Stanford, Colorado and Arizona are years behind.
Riley will not harvest the talent that greeted him at Oklahoma, when he came as offensive coordinator in 2015 and took over in 2017. If Ohio State’s Ryan Day “was born on third base and thought he hit a triple,” as Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh snarked Saturday, Riley was bearing down on an empty net in a shootout. Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray were both transfer quarterbacks.
But they became Heisman winners with Riley, who recruited another potential one in Caleb Williams. His offenses have topped 500 yards in 55 games at Oklahoma. Three times, OU averaged more than eight yards per snap.
East Carolina averaged 533 yards in Riley’s final year as its coordinator. In consecutive years, they scored 55 and 70 on North Carolina.
The quarterback was Shane Carden, who coaches high school football in Idaho and is a Newport Beach native. He remembers the Pete Carroll days at the Coliseum and fully expects a sequel.
“There’s no point in which he thinks he’s out of a ballgame,” Carden said. “We thought we could score from every point on the field. He was always preparing for this. He took notes at every meeting, all the time I was there.
“But he didn’t just pound football into us. He kept it light, told us jokes, made sure we knew there were other things to life. I was struck by how short his play sheet was. If you didn’t feel comfortable with something, he didn’t have such an ego that he made you run it.”
Carden also said Riley believes in firm running. His first five offenses at OU ranked from 11th to 27th in rushing nationally.
“There are all kinds of Air Raids,” Carden said. “He really wants a tough, physical football team.”
OU fans were taken aback, of course. One player groused that Riley also used to tell the Sooners they were in the Mecca of football, and an Amish restaurant arranged its signboard to read, “Our Cheese Won’t Let You Down, Unlike Lincoln Riley.”
In truth, there is no clean break, and who are we kidding? Players change high schools, back off commitments and enter the portal at their whim. Coaches find out on Twitter..
In fact, there was one internet rumor that maintained USC was buying both of Riley’s houses in Norman. A local Realtor shot that down, but one surmises the deal was good enough for Riley to handle the L.A. delays.
After all, he gave up being a Sooner.

Off topic >>> How many times has there been 2 Conference Championship teams coming out of the same State in the same College Football season ? (Like Utah and Utah State might be able to accomplish this weekend ).
GO AZTECS! BEAT THE AGGIES!
I don’t like the Utes chances tonight either. If Utah wins tonight Oregon was seriously over rated and Utah seriously under rated.
For the Utes to beat the Ducks 38-7 just a couple of weeks ago, they must have some real match-up advantages I figure. The Ducks will be losing there OC, Joe Moorhead, to AKRON after the game.
I figure ORE might be a little off-balance.
Plus since ORE won’t have any home field/weather advantage, I think these slightly favored Utes will take them down again, this time in Vegas. Should be a good one. Would love to see another oversized win for UTAH, which would really put can’t-win-the-big-one ORE in its place. One can dream.
We got a rematch just 2 weeks after a blow out. Oregon is probably not that bad and will be looking to avenge. Utah players may be a little over confident. Could be a close one. If I was still in the contest I would go with the Ducks. But I too would like to see Utah win it.
Did the OU DB coach who is still on OU payroll and talked to Domani break any ncaa rules? Yes it sounds odd for him to do that but is there a rule that you cannot recruit for one school while employed by another? Has it been addressed?
Something that is not clear is….who called who.
Domani has listed his two finalists as Alabama or USC.
Coach Manning was recruiting for OU, during the conversation how it went off tracks is only according to Domani Jackson ?
So…just how did USC get into the conversation ? And by which party ?
What was asked ? What was said ?
Coach Manning is still at OU (for now) Jackson hasn’t uttered another word about the incident!
Was the whole issue overblown by On3 who broke the story…
Is Domani Jackson seeking more attention. Lot’s of questions, few answers.
When you look at who USC has offered for 2022 and who is warm, it could be a good class. The ones that are presently cool may have a change of heart with our new coach, which encourages me to think we could have the foundation of a real good O line, not to mention RB, QB, and WR. Now lets help Tuli out and get some D line and linebackers with speed.
Yes, H.S 2022 class could be excellent for the numbers we land. Come to the portal, that is where much could happen, both in and out. Riley is brilliant with QB’s, would be fascinating to know how he reads Dart. If Caleb Williams enters portal than that becomes telling.
I’ll be rooting for Utah tomorrow night. I’d really like to see Kyle W make it to a New Years 6 bowl. They have never played in the Rose Bowl, and I have a lot of respect for the coach and program. I like the style of play, the toughness, and what they always do with less. Plus, I’m so tired of Oregon having conference bragging rights
I’m praying ORE loses again, this time in Allegiant Stadium tomorrow night at 5 pm PT (ABC). Down go the Ducks! Oh, ya,
4-star Raleek Brown commits to USC Trojans & Lincoln Riley
A day after decommitting from Oklahoma, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei four-star all-purpose back Raleek Brown announced his commitment to local USC.
Brown was to the point on when asked why he switched his pledge to USC.
“Because I feel like USC is going to be a good program with the new coaching staff,” Brown said.
The electric 5-foot-7, 170-pound playmaker hinted at this soon after former Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley was announced as the Trojans’ new headman.

Riley gets Raleek today. First 5Star in the bag. Top 15 or better class is coming!
This is like Christmas every day with Riley working like a bunch of elves trying to fill all our stockings with 4 and 5 star players. Ho Ho Ho
Lincoln Riley record against Pac 12 ?
1-0
BEAT UCLA 48-14 2019 😎
Surely the chipster welcomes Riley to the Southland
So who put the gun to Fox sports head to make them telcast the Cal-SC game ? ……If you could bet on the Over/Under on tv ratings for a game I would absolutely bet the under for that game .In my neighborhood Midnight will happen before the halfway point of the 2nd Quarter. If it is an overtime game you are talking 3 to 3:30AM !!!!!
This is shaping up to be an incredible recruiting battle between two legendary programs. If Lincoln Riley is able to beat Nick Saban in this initial recruiting duel, it will go a long way towards setting the direction USC needs to travel to return to glory.
Domani Jackson, the 6-1, 180-pound #1 CB from Santa Ana Mater Dei, CA is ranked as the No. 3 overall player in the 2022 Class.
Jackson might be part of a huge MD class headed our way- Raleek, Bailey, TMac, CJ Williams are now all in the mix again. Crazy that you can recruit one school and pull 5 of the top players in the country.
It helps if you can pick the right recruit/s too, because they never ALL work out. If USC gets literally every Monarch he wants (is that even possible?), that’ll fit right into Lincoln’s plan to re-establish USC much quicker than later. Since USC signed its last prep recruits for the class of 2021, I literally haven’t paid any attention to USC football recruiting. There was no reason. We were committing average guys and our coach was just the worst. Now, I expect to hear positive recruiting news about USC almost every single day. USC football is back, baby! Maybe not… Read more »
I barely care about the game, it means nothing. Also, for any current player who wants to go, they should. It will be different here, there will be changes. Donte got elevated in our hearts and minds because he was the only good thing going. I wish him the best, but not worried about him leaving or taking anyone with him. Riley certainly isn’t, and that’s good enough for me.
Where did I ever get the idea that Director of Football Sports Performance Robert Stiner was going to be great for USC strength/conditioning? How much longer will Toa Lobendan be a part of the USC offensive grad asst program? Where will WR coach/Trojan Keary Colbert end up? Was he a mediocre recruiter because of his own skills, or was it just impossible to recruit for The Cat who was seemingly always on the way out? Watching USC navigate its way through Riley’s Rebuild will be an incredible thing to see. However, I’m seeing this as more of a rebuild than… Read more »
I would not be surprised if the Cat commissioned a bronze plaque immortalizing Toa. It is probably in the players locker room and an miniature-sized replica of the plaque is glued to the dashboard of the Cat’s car, right next to his plastic Jesus.
Rebuild indeed. Little idea of how the logistics work now with coaching/staff changes.
By months end USC football will look light years different than last Saturday.
Does the phrase ‘under center’ still apply? What are the odds we have an experienced
OU QB playing at USC not named Rattler?
In Pac 12 football Rebuilds turn to reloads quickly. Only Utah remains as a program
that is stable.
Not going under center. Don’t want to burst a bubble, but Riley doesn’t do that either.
Hence my joke about phrase….
My bad, It was a poor read on my part.
Toa will be GA Southern’s next offensive line coach. 😄
He is the only one left who the Cat loved. He has to go.
You laugh VT, but that could happen…. My GSU graduate daughter is beside herself with disappointment with the hiring of the CAT, because she has seen how lousy Uncle Clay is as a HC. She has observed my anguished rantings for the several years now during the many lives of Clay the Cat….
So sad. I’m afraid your daughter is in for a rough ride. Since it sounds like she’s a football fan, I hope she’s got other hobbies to elevate while The Cat destroys the Eagles.
I’m so glad he’s gone, I thank David Shaw every day for finally getting the ball rolling.
Her brief foray into Graduate School was at Florida Atlantic University, when Lane Kiffen was the coach. She is really tired of USC cast-offs.😄
Do you think Kiffin will jump at the chance to coach at MIA or ALA? He’s always the most interesting character on the Coaching Carousel Board. Even when he’s not being named to a new job, he’s always in the news and a hot topic for one reason or another because of his impromptu answers and fearless approach to the media. Kiffin’s truly one of a kind. It looks like he was always the best bet over Sark, who now has to figure out how to make Burnt Orange something he can live with.
As hard as it is to follow a legend, Kiffin’s ego is such that I think he will pursue the AL job when Nick the Wizard retires.
I’ve always believed that Kiffin jumped back into the SEC to position himself to be hired by Alabama once Saban retired. Why else leave a cushy gig where he could dominate due to his recruiting prowess?
That makes it 2-0 Alabama.
Sorry ‘Canes, but Lane has a little crapshoot in him still. I think he could do very well at ALA too. It’s not easy.
I wonder if Saban has told a trusted few who he wants to follow him, or if he even cares?
Riley’s dogs can be tire and biter but that’s a minor problem. Elias Ricks is in the transfer portal, but I have heard from people where his mom worked that he’s leaning to a school like Notre Dame…However that was before the coaching change. I think Riley will be inviting the team to his office soon in order to get a real finger on the pulse of the team moving forward. Weight room has got to be busier this off season.
USC Basketball looks good, and gets better and better each game. Balanced team that plays excellent D
When the team plays ‘D’ it is incredible to watch and leads to a lot of turnovers and fast break baskets.
Looks like team had meeting and Donte let everyone know he won’t be around after Saturday. Quite a few players stayed out of practice today. It’s going to be an interesting few weeks with players leaving and transferring in.
He could be headed to UW per some speculation. As far as players holding out from practice, it’s gonna take a while to root out the crippling inefficiencies of Trojan football.
I still say USC beats the Bears. If not, 4-8 will have never looked so good.
Very surreal season. On the 2022 recruiting front it feels like we have an excellent class, yet not a single new commitment. That will change tomorrow. Amazing, between 12/15 and portal spring practice will be unreal
USC has only FOUR 2022 commits now, and of those only CB Fabian Moss is even a 4-star recruit. One is a 2-star punter from Australia.
As of now, this #104 247Sports group is officially as low as I have ever seen a Trojan group by a mile. USC is also dead last in the Pac-12.
Lincoln Riley’s gonna need to be working 24 hours a day to fix this mess. He wanted a challenge. Well, he’s officially got it.
It will be interesting how many total players will be on scholarship come spring, then come fall. With all the coaching moves, the portal will never have been so full. We talk about the coaching staff changes, curious how the support staff is doing, they will be swamped.
I think I read or heard somewhere that Choc Chip Kelly lost over 60 players from the UCLA program, and he still only managed to go 8-4 in year four in the woeful Pac-12. I’m sure many USC players are not nearly capable of performing as Lincoln Riley demands of his squads. I’m starting to wonder if this USC team is ready to even beat CAL now. Maybe not. Personally, a USC victory in Berkeley doesn’t really matter much to me. Sure, I always like to see USC win. But luring in the best assts that Lincoln covets for this… Read more »
The USC team we saw last Saturday I don’t expect to show at CAL. Like Rock said “I don’t understand players mailing it in”
One would think there would be a fire lit for many with what is to come. Still they turned to the current coaches for direction, and we see the results.
They need just look at the BB team and see Trojan Pride
Actually, I’ve noticed USC players “mailing it in” all year long, from all facets of the team. When you have people like Bruce Feldman saying that this is the absolute worst USC team he has seen in 20 years “on the hoof”, you can see they mail it in in the weight room as well. That’s also consistent with sloppy play, untimely mistakes, penalties (no, I don’t think the refs lost any games for USC that I watched), too many injuries, lack of clutch play, etc. Now that Donte (Don’t Step On That Logo!) Williams has announced he is leaving,… Read more »
Throw in a global pandemic and that’s what we got. A tsunami is building, we will see what stands and who will be ready to re build.
Is it confirmed he announced he is gone?
Personally, I don’t care if Donte stays or not. I hope he ends up in a good situation, wherever that is, and I appreciate his willingness to be an interim HC for USC even though he was not ready for the job. He got a lot of publicity and exposure this season which will hopefully be good for his career.
well said. We are seeing what real culture change looks like. Donte probably doesn’t fit .Really are there any coaches that might stay? Riley mentioned he knew some of the coaches well, not that means a job, yet he knows to evaluate. He knows his budget, and may be able to afford coaches he couldn’t at OK If OL coach doesn’t come he will give a good look at McGuire.
It’s all driven by Riley. He’s telling recruits that they should look elsewhere. I’m 100% confident we will have a top 20 class and 90% confident it will be near top 10. I also think it will only be 15ish players. We are going to get a huge transfer portal wave coming and going as well.
If USC recruiting somehow moves up from #104 to top 10/15 under Riley, he will have accomplished a most amazing recruiting feat. I think it’s a little much to ask, so at this stage, I’m focusing on his staff compilation. Until that is completed, I don’t see how Riley can bring in the best players for his systems.
With a great name like Atticus Bertrams the 2 star punter gets another star from me.
I think we moved up to 88 and #11 in Pac12. Woohoo
To announce before the game was a brain dead move by Donte, showing that he truly is not ready to lead as a HC. I think I see the ghost of Helton hovering around Donte, and Donte is finding comfort in it. I have been a supporter but no more. I know he will come back to haunt us in recruiting, all we can do is build anew and move forward with a better product that will sell itself again like it used to.
I thought the same. Just another reflection of ‘PAST’ staff. Lead me to think about how many coaches across the country are doing something similar.
The landscape of College football is changing quickly
It’s only rational the marginal players will likely go portal as they have to figure a number of them will wind up on the practice squad. Riley has to have said or implied if you can’t cut it on the field, you ain’t playing. We shouldn’t be worried about players leaving. The good ones will obviously stay.
I’m not worried about anybody leaving actually. I think USC could bring in as many as 32 new guys from the preps or the portal. Lincoln will be working overtime in the portal market I think. If he actually gets USC to a #10 rank with the 2022 prep signings, he’ll have to turn in an otherworldly effort, and he’ll also need some real luck IMO.
I don’t understand players mailing it in this week, unless they are seniors that have no prospect or intention of pursuing a pro career. Everybody else should be playing with their hair on fire this week to impress Riley and his guys. Even if I were planning to jump into the transfer portal after the season, I would be looking to leave the best film I can from this last game, meaningless as it is. If we can’t beat Cal on Saturday under these circumstances, it means Riley has an even bigger challenge ahead than we thought.
What we seem to be learning is that USC’s talent really dropped off over the last several years, not only from a physical vantage point, but mentally as well. USC seems to be an even more fractured team than we may have suspected. No wonder the Trojans have only won four games so far, and been slaughtered at home even by total trainwrecks like stinky STAN. USC will soon start signing players who are a lot more committed to success, and willing to pay the price it takes to make that commitment pay off. Thank goodness Lincoln Riley is here… Read more »
We saw it happening and figured what was going on. Helton did little or nothing up to a few weeks before signup day. Instead of recruiting the better athletes who would demand more of him, he waited until the leftovers were ready to sign with anyone and here comes Helton with his USC cap on and the 3-stars jumped to him being grateful and accepting his sad-low energy leadership. It drove me mad seeing it happen year after year.
I think your comment that the underclassmen should be playing with their hair on fire to impress Riley is spot on Rock2112. If I were a player on the team and coming back next year, I’d want to make a good impression right now. It will be interesting to see what happens Saturday in Berkeley.
Rock, You wrote a great piece on “USC Football Is Dead”. You were absolutely correct, if one adds (under Helton or any coach like him). As Arledge wrote to the effect, these are not USC Trojans playing, they are Oregon State Beavers in stolen uniforms. And, that was an insult to Oregon State. They are young kids who were extremely poorly coached and are in denial on that fact and also have a totally unrealistic view of their talent and what it takes to develop as a top level football player. They are (as a group) also, as is NOW… Read more »
Spot on RJJ! As to my declaration of the death of USC football, I somewhat retract it in one sense and stand by it in another. The Lincoln Riley hire — whether it works or not — was the appropriate response to what I articulated there (not saying any of them read it!): I said in part that USC Football was dead because I didn’t trust the current USC admin to put winning football first in the next hire. They deserved that assessment when I said it. But then, for the first time in a long time, someone associated with… Read more »
