J. Brady McCollough (LA Times) — One of the things Luke Fickell said last week during my visit to Cincinnati really stuck with me Saturday as I watched his star quarterback, Desmond Ridder, wave the Bearcats’ flag in the end zone of Notre Dame Stadium.
“Whether it’s right or wrong, I don’t take in a lot of the sights,” Fickell said of the South Bend experience. “My former players and coaches call me and remind me, ‘Hey, make sure to take in the opportunity you have and enjoy it, look around at some point.’ That doesn’t happen until there’s zeros on the clock for me.”
When the zeros hit, No. 7 Cincinnati had 24 points to No. 9 Notre Dame’s 13, and we can only hope he was able to snap out of his trance to soak up the sight of what looked like thousands of Cincinnati fans draped in red cheering on Ridder and his teammates as the defeated Notre Dame student section sang the alma mater.
I went to Cincinnati to profile one of college football’s best stories of recent years — and, of course, to gauge the likelihood that Fickell could be USC’s next head coach. Before Saturday’s game, I felt it was unlikely, due to his deep Ohio roots and family pressures, but still possible. Nobody, even his reluctant wife, Amy Fickell, was willing to close the door on USC.
Though beating the Trojans’ rival Saturday made Fickell more coveted by USC fans who were already intrigued by him, my gut tells me Cincinnati’s historic victory lessened the chances of a Fickell-USC match.
The Bearcats were clearly better than the Fighting Irish on both sides of the ball. They led 17-0 at halftime and answered Notre Dame with a clutch touchdown drive in the fourth quarter when the Irish pulled to within 17-13 and the echoes were waking. This was an emphatic result that proved to Fickell that he does not need to coach at a blue blood to beat one.
Cincinnati should be ranked in the top five this week and will be a heavy favorite in every game it plays in the American Athletic Conference. With wins at Indiana and at Notre Dame in non-conference play, it will have the resume to become the first Group of Five team to be invited to the College Football Playoff if it runs the table.
Look, nobody is suggesting that Fickell is going to finish his career at Cincinnati. He’s 48 and eventually Ohio State (his alma mater), Notre Dame, Michigan or Penn State will come open again and better fit his Midwestern ethos. In the meantime, there are reasons beyond his team’s recent performance to stay put, keep building and not rock the boat with his happy family.
Amy Fickell told me that she is hopeful Cincinnati’s upcoming move to the Big 12 and the Power Five will show Luke there is more to be done right where he is. Throw in an expanded playoff, and there’s a legitimate chance for the Bearcats to have more seasons just like this one, particularly with Fickell running the show.
USC athletic director Mike Bohn, who hired Fickell at Cincinnati and gets his family dynamic, probably already knows whether he has a real shot at Fickell. He also knows that if his top candidate makes the playoff he won’t be able to make a hire until January, which could make it harder on USC to keep its recruiting class together through December’s early signing period.
Trojans backers who have their eye on Fickell should hope for just a wee little bit of adversity to befall the Bearcats in the coming weeks. Based on Saturday, though, I wouldn’t count on a Cincinnati letdown — or Fickell switching out Cincinnati red for USC cardinal.

Donte made players and coaching staff runs sprints for penalties. Not sure I’ve heard of coaches running before. I’m OK with any culture change. Go Donte.
Wow. I just heard this on Colin Cowherd. The Raiders have not even won a playoff game since 2002. True. But people just love these guys. I’ve never really been a Raider fan, so I just don’t get it, even though I like their helmets and colors. Yet I totally love that the Chargers just smacked them down big time, like I hoped they would. Cowherd’s theory is that they don’t belong anywhere. They are the Villians, the Outliers, and their more edgy fans totally embrace it. They just have a certain ethos. They don’t belong. Cowherd — “If you… Read more »
I’m a miserable lifelong fan. Davis drive them into the ground. He didn’t have money to compete and played in the worst stadiums in the NFL. It’s different now. They still need a GM, but Gruden is a great play caller. They can’t keep whiffing on 1st round picks though. Lots of poor choices the past 4-5 years with first picks.
Why do you like them so much? They never win diddly.
I can see loving them in the Jim Plunkett, Kenny Stabler, Ray Guy, Ted Hendricks, Ben Davidson, & John Madden days. They were awesome! Plus Al Davis used to be bonafide awesome too, before he lost his mind.
But what is it that makes them so popular to you now, despite their constant losing ways? Do you buy what Colin Cowherd said? Os is there more to it?
People seem to feel the same way about Dallas. But even more so about the Raiders, a true American sporting phenomenon.
I grew up in LA and they were my boyhood team because they were good. The Rams were JV. I’m a loyal guy. It’s dodgers, Lakers, Raiders, Kings, and USC for me. I’d rather lose with my guys than win with others.
Also didn’t hurt that the first ever game I went to was a playoff game against the Steelers and Marcus Allen went crazy. A few weeks later we won the super bowl.
Most all of us would much rather lose with our guys too. But I really couldn’t care less about the Dodgers, Angels, Rams, Lakers, Kings or Raiders and I grew up in Newport. They were the local teams to root for if you really cared about pro sports. But at least the Dodgers and the Lakers win, so good for them. But the Raiders stink every year and they’re still the NFL’s most popular team. Hopefully, someone here, Raider fan or not, can finally give me some hints. Obviously, it’s not an easy answer, because Cowherd’s wasting a lot of… Read more »
Newport people are Angel fans. Dodgers were to me like the raiders. Other than the Jerry West through Kobe years I could care less about the Lakers. Show time was electric, those guys could play some basketball.
I was at the 1987 Boston Garden game when Magic so perfectly baby-sky-hooked the Lakers to victory over the hated/dreaded/feared/cocky/totally stunned Celtics with seven seconds to go in game four of the finals.
What a moment in sports. The world stood still. I still remember the toothy smile on Magic’s face. He may have had the greatest smile of all time.
Didn’t Wilt say he made love to something like 1000-plus women? I’m guessing he was hard to satisfy! And loved the attention.
I always felt he was a little underappreciated. He played a long time ago, so it’s all a little hazy. But from a pure giant athlete’s point of view, I can’t imagine anyone ever wanting to face him.
Wilt was what 7’2″ and was genuinely a big man. He was a pure force under the basket. I heard the same thing about the women, I believe it, it fits him perfect.
We were both way off @Steveg, as far as Wilt’s claimed conquests go:
“In addition to his accomplishments on the court, Chamberlain also authored four books. None of the others created nearly the stir and controversy as his 1991 book, A View From Above. In it, the basketball great claimed to have slept with 20,000 different women during his life.”. mentalfloss.com
Biggest problem I have accepting that number is that from a sheer probability point of view, there would be several hundred little Wilts resulting. I don’t recall ever hearing even one paternity claim. Maybe someone else has…
I have a funny memory when I was learning to drive, Wilt pulled up next to me at a stop light. He was driving a customized VW Bug, he took out the front seats and he was driving from the back seat. I waived to him and he waived back; I don’t think I have ever seen a hand that was as big as his.
I cannot stand the raiders, always was a Ram fan, then they left and Davis scammed the LA area for as much as he could get and left town too. The old raiders with Alzado (University of Mars), Lamonica, Plunkett, and the Snake were a lot of fun though.
I have been pleasantly surpised at how well Derek Carr has improved working under Jon Gruden. Since Gruden’s arrival I have watched most of their games and they are indeed entertaining. I do not care for their fans antics though. I plan to make a weekend excursion to see them play in their new stadium in Vegas. Anyone want to join me?
I have to ask, the name of Bob Stoops has come up a few times. How do you guys weigh in on him. He had a great record at OK. I don’t think I would be upset if USC hired him.
Huge name. He’d be hard to say no to if he really wanted it. But for me, meh. Good, not great. Lost an awful lot of big games. Very sturdy, solid and inspires a lot of confidence. Stoops hasn’t coached in five years and I think that’s a long time to be away from your wheelhouse job. He’s not that impressive on Fox Big Noon Kickoff. Very generalized. Not really insightful. I thought Urban Meyer was twice as good in the same role, and on the field Meyer was a lot more accomplished, but also got into trouble. If we… Read more »
He could step into the job in time to salvage the early signing. I would assume he has the contacts to bring in a first class staff. He is 60 years old, not sure how that works with the kids, but there are older guys having success so there ya go.
I hope we don’t get him. But if we do. I’d say he’s a solid double, but no more. I was hoping for better, personally. But if more promising people, including up-and-comers who are 20 years younger, won’t take the USC job, then so be it.
He’s a home run in my opinion. Only draw back is age. He would take us to top 5 program right away. There aren’t 5 better college coaches on the planet.
Curious as to the opinions out there. Would you rather have a guy like Chadwell at coastal Carolina who is 16-1 the last 2 years and leading his team to New Years six bowls or Mike Gundy who churns out top 25 teams in big 12 but never wins the conference?
not saying I want either guy but if I had to choose I would take Gundy. I think his floor at USC is what he does now and his ceiling could be much higher. I’ll take the power 5 guy. How about you?
I think I would go with Chadwell. He has won at several places, it shows he knows how to coach up and have winning teams. I am not really worried about what level they have coached at, coaching is coaching, sometimes it is harder at the lower levels where kids are not that good coming in. Gundy is a winner though, but he has spent his whole career at one place, and I think that is limiting for him. A good coach who has a broad exposure is more adaptable. USC sure needs someone who can coach up a winner,… Read more »
My dark horse in the race is Kalen DeBoer from Fresno. The guy has it all together and impresses me every week. I love to watch his interaction with his coaches and players. He conducts himself like a head coach should. You can see his players respect him and don’t screw up much.
One thing I forgot to say about Chadwell, is he won’t be at Coastal for very long, he is moving up for sure to somewhere.
The drifting apart thesis is just click bait for those of us who are following the latest speculation about USC’s search for a new head coach. Cool Hand Luke has the most intriguing bio of all the “candidates.” Fickell Ball looks like the cure for what ails the Trojans.
No way no that Urban Meyer is our next coach given the latest video clip released of him. I don’t blame Folt or Bohn if they don’t want to hire him. While Fickell would be nice, he may not be ready for the pressure at USC. I still want to go after Mario Cristobal or James Franklin. We need to get going because LSU is going to dump Orgeron and will be competing with us soon.
I think Franklin recruits some talent, probably more than Gomer, but he is in the same league with the Cat when it comes to coaching players up. Franklin would be a YUGE mistake. Yep, I said it, Yuge mistake.
I would be very hesitant to ever put Frankin in the same filthy pile of manure that Helton sits in. Who else is ever gonna hire Helton? I thought we all literally felt he was unemployable?
Franklin could get hired as HC at 20 different programs by the end of the year if he put his hat into the ring. I just don’t see how the two are in the same league at all, whether it’s coaching players up, or picking a starting lineup, or handing out towels.
Sure he can get jobs all over the place, but explain to me why he can’t win the big games. He has been at PSU long enough to have an NC caliber program. Right now he is at #4, if he stays there great, but like I said, to me he would be a huge mistake, just me I guess.
I’m simply saying I would never use Franklin and Helton in the same sentence. Feel free to do so.
The reason Franklin could get 20 other CFB HC jobs at the drop of a hat is because everyone in the college coaching community thinks he’s far superior to what Helton could ever be.
Franklin will win big here on his ability to recruit. He will have a top 3 class every year. I’ve been to Penn State, it’s in the middle of nowhere. Beautiful country, but certainly not tucked into a recruiting hotbed.
I think Franklin would win big at USC as well. I’m not lobbying for him to get the job, be it he can recruit well at PSU, what he could do at USC would be Carroll-like. But a lot of USC people will never like him because Darnold (not Helton) beat him in the Rose Bowl and Franklin frankly didn’t coach well at the end of that game. It’s funny how certain memories really stick forever. For me, that 2017 Rose Bowl win is one of them. Greatest Rose Bowl I ever saw, right after my second one, 42-37 over… Read more »
I’m ready to be done with the Urban Meyer as coach talk. There are 3 things I know for sure about him. he’s a great college coach and we would be a great football team almost immediately. he wouldn’t stick around long there would be a new controversy or not great situation surrounding him all three of those things have been true for him no matter where he goes. We all love the #1, but I don’t want #’s 2 and 3. There are other coaches who can come in here and be great (maybe not quite as good) without… Read more »
I have to agree with you about Meyer. Especially the latest episode at his restaurant in Ohio last Thursday. Behaving more like the Kiffen and Sark of 10 years ago. Kiff and Sark have grown up, Meyer hasn’t. The guy just seems to have something not screwed on right. He may implode in Jacksonville and never coach again.
Could Luke Fickel be another Tom Herman?
Comes from a storied program, OSU, he takes over a non-power 5 program (Houston vs. Cincinnati, builds the program and wins some games against better power 5-programs and becomes a hot candidate. Herman had everything going for him like Fickel does today. But USC has expectations like Texas in winning which Herman wasn’t able to provide at Texas.
Herman was at Houston only 2 seasons and didn’t do much in the second season before going to Texas. Fickell is in his 5th season and has better results in Cincy than Herman in Houston. Now the guys with solid resumes are Meyer and Franklin. So Fickell is a better bet than Herman but someone else may be better.
Herman had big problems with the Texas HS coaches, a sin in Texas football. He disrespected a lot of people. Basically, he was a disaster at TEXAS, wildly beyond many people’s most negative imaginations, which is why he was very quickly fired and paid richly to take a hike.
But they are both midwest guys and Herman made a serious mistake that didn’t understand Texas. Could Fikell make a similar one never coaching outside Ohio and not being “street smart”? ‘Are the similarities there for a possible rerun? Would Mike Bohn be smart enough to contemplate this possible scenario since a lot of people are saying this opportunity will be too easy for Bohn not to pass up.
That almost sounds like what so many have said before, that the new coach needs to “know USC”. Perhaps someone from the heartland will install new cultures and priorities into the program that could be refreshing.
Agreed. I so hope the new Trojan HC doesn’t let it slip out publicly that he thinks he “knows USC.”
Kiss of death, especially if he brings his “I know USC culture” to the program which is totally desperate to redefine its culture to one that actually wins in 2022.
Luke wouldn’t come into USC like a toothless redneck carrying a long neck and wearing a straw hat. He would have some semblance of civility, and his staff I am sure will steer him in the right direction. USC probably has someone on staff to make sure the coaches get dialed in to how to be “west coast guys”. If not, they will hire one if needed. Whoever they hire will not resemble anyone who has coached at USC before, and that is a good thing. More than one way to skin a cat. McKay had his way, Robinson his… Read more »
Hah. Herman coached HOU for two years, and he still didn’t get the state of TEXAS, one of the most obvious places on the planet. What a freakin’ idiot. I was in Texas once for two days on football business and it wasn’t that tough to figure out.
I’ll take Fickell, who is a lot smarter than I am. You take that loon Herman. Thank you for the sweet deal @Jamaica! Total pleasure doing business with you. 😂 😂
I never said the new USC coaching hire should have a USC connection. But living or coaching in California and having some NFL coaching experience would be a plus to deal with today’s HS recruits.
It’s amazing how many Raider fans like to beat the heck out of people in public at games. Seems like there’s a slight Hells Angels, the Wild Ones mentality going on there — for lack of a much better comparison.
Probably about the only person I would really listen to about hiring the new coach at USC would be Mike Bohn, and it just seems he isn’t saying much. Everything else is fun and conjecture, with the end result being someone only part of us like getting hired. But there are some great points of view being posed on here, better than a lot of the media wonks. Me, I am just going with Fickell or Aranda. Thanks
When Bohn hired Finkle, was it luck or due diligence? I don’t know. Some AD’s are lucky that way, Mike Garrett got lucky with Pete. We just have to hope Bohn found his formula for hiring winning coaches. It is going to be hard for him to bring in someone who isn’t considered a homerun hire. So does he bring in a big name or bring in a coach who can succeed? (or both) People hated Pete when he was hired and were not sold the first season. Our problem is we have suffered too long under Helton to accept… Read more »
PC may have been a bad choice in many people’s eyes when MG hired him. But he was successful as a DC in the NFL and well regarded given two chances to HC NFL teams. He was fired from both but he had more knowledge than any college coach around in X’s & O’s. I don’t ever remember another HC making halftime changes like PC that turned the game around This is why I think there needs to be an NFL connection involved in the new USC HC that would develop both an defense & offense.
I think I was more concerned with the way USC fired Robinson than who they brought in. I was like, “who?”
But your point is well taken. NFL experience is not a bad thing with the right mindset. I think PC had more fun than work when it came his players. He didn’t have to put up with the “play me or trade me attitude” and he liked that.
McCollough is guessing just like the rest of us. He has no inside scoop. I’d play devil’s advocate to this article and suggest an ambitious coach’s best play is to sell while his stock is highest. I put Fickell at 50/50 right now. I also tend to mostly agree with Cowherd’s take that kids are mostly going to the SEC and the coastal/sunny states. The far inland, Northern and Midwest states have gradually bled talent geographically outward in the last 15-20 years. Only OK and tOSU have been able to sustain success. Notre Dame, Neb, Mich, etc., just don’t bring… Read more »
These are the keys to Fickell’s hire. His connection to Bohn. How the conversation goes with wife and kids. What he figures is continued upside at Cinci. Will the OSU job open soon. I agree with you 50/50. But only Bohn knows.
Everyone keeps going back to Bohns hiring Fickell, let’s keep in mind, how well did they get along, was there a trust and friendship established or, did they simply interact and work together. Pete and Garrett never got on good together, that happens a lot with successful coaches. That alone will play a big part in Bohns approach. “In the meantime, there are reasons beyond his team’s recent performance to stay put, keep building and not rock the boat with his happy family.” Why did McCollough bring this up, because Amy Fickell expresses her non interest in moving to L.A.… Read more »
there are programs that can be good for a while and maybe great for a year. There are only 4-5 that can be great all the time. We are one of those programs. Any coach who believes in himself will know he can be the coach of a dynasty if he gets it right while at USC.
I’m surprised Oregon only fell to #8 in the polls. I think other teams like Michigan, Michigan St, should be ahead of them, but it’s always good for the conference to have a school in the top ten, and Oregon’s program has built up enough of a reputation to get the benefit of the doubt, like Pete’s Trojans used to
It doesn’t sound like Luke has the kind of ego to have to prove himself at a place like SC. I think the fact that Cincinnati is moving to the Big 12, gives him a bigger reason to stay, because he knows he won’t always have to go undefeated, and schedule more power five non conference teams to make the playoffs, especially if there is expanded teams allowed in.
There is the difficulty for USC in getting a proven winner. Who would want to leave a top 10 program they have spent years building and go start all over in Los Angeles? Fickell seems to have deep roots in Ohio and a Buckeye alum. Franklin has the only big time program in the Northeast having resurrected Penn St.
It seems USC fans are so down on the program now that many truly expect USC to settle for a nothing-but-mediocre coach. Strange times for USC football. Post-apocalyptic Clay Helton Pessimism abounds.
I am not pessimistic. I am trying to put myself in the shoes of a potential coach. They will have to want to come to LA and leave where they and their family are. They will know and like California especially LA and like it. Rock is right when you make $10 million a year you don’t care about cost of living. The Gold Standard is Saben. He worked his way up the ranks in college to become a winner head coach, a try at head coach in the NFL and comes back to college. That leads back to Urban… Read more »
I’m enjoying living in a fantasy that despite the long-standing disappointments of the troubled USC football program, Bohn understands he has to lure and sign a terrific HFC who can bring the Trojans out of the doldrums.
I expect him to accomplish this with a big check, hard work, and the natural attraction of making it big in L.A., a city dominated as always by stars, power, and the chance to forever go down as the guy who returned USC to power. It’s a tall task. But I’m optimistic.
All these questions about “why would this top coach leave X school to come to USC to rebuild.” There are 13 million reasons per year why — and that is what it is going to take. After 14 years of coaching hire blunders and unforced errors, it is time for SC to overpay to get a big name. We’re going to have to win a bidding war, and we’re going to have to be willing to win a bidding war. And heading it off, some of you are going to come at me with the cost of living argument for… Read more »
No chance we pay 13 mil a year, not even close. Nobody gets paid that, including Saban or NFL coaches. I’ll bet we are in the 7-8 mil range at top end.
Saban gets $12 mil. If $10 mil does it, then great. My point is, if you need $13 mil to get the right guy you pay it. We have to overpay in our situation, which is one of our own making. Time to cash in some of those savings we have reaped over the last decade on crap coaches.
Completed earlier this year, aligns with both my and Allen’s thoughts as to a salary it will take to get a good coach at SC, there are no great coaches available in this hiring cycle aside from Saban and Meyer, neither are coming to the rescue.
I agree, however, looking beyond the Untouchables, the next tier which includes the familiar names, Campbell, Fickell, Franklin, Cristobal and Aranda, Petersen is frequently mentioned but a highly unlikely possibility, all have peaks and valleys in their current location and high spots along the way. The next tier of potential candidates is at best a flip of a coin and hope for the best, simply put, there are no sure winners available, even considering the erstwhile Lightening Strike (Carroll Version) one offs. When viewing the current options, from a business perspective you have to look at value received for dollars… Read more »
I think it will cost at least $15 Million for the new staff, all in. Plus the existing buy out. Looking at probably $22 to 24 Million a year for the next few years to fix this mess. I wonder about the “die or conquer” phenomenon. A well-known historical battle phenomenon is when a group that should be defeated win a battle they should have lost. My name for it is “conquer or die.” A well known example would be Omaha Beach at Normandy in 1944. We may see that take effect with this staff. We saw different schemes from… Read more »
Cinn can go undefeated and will not make the playoff. Group of 5 teams just dont get in. Fickell will have to wait until the big 12 take them in to possibly get in the playoff. A win over a marginal ND team that will have 2-3 losses by year end doesn’t hold up.
Chris, With Stanford beating Oregon, and the ACC being down this year, if Cinn runs the table, they are in. (My guess is the 4 will be AL, GA, the winner of the Big 10, and Cinn). OK has not been dominate enough and the Big 12 is simply not strong enough. Based on that article, it appears there is ZERO chance Fickell is coming to SC. I love the southern California area (particularly south Orange County) and I would not move back there given the culture, the government, and my family being all now in the DFW area. We are at mid schedule of the 2021 season, nobody knows what will happen to Cincinnati in the coming weeks. They may skyrocket to a top 2 or 3 spot, or come crashing down to falling out of the top 25. Then what will the writers say, take the USC job while it is available? Fickell is not out until he tells Bohn no, IMHO. We all just have to wait it out, but the newspapers and media need to create clicks.
Fickell will remain at Cincinnati and not come to USC to coach the Trojans. We don’t know how many No’s AD Bohn has received so far but my gut feeling is Fickell stays put.
I’ve heard his wife wears the pants in the family and she wants to stay put by all accounts. Why leave the comfortable Midwest for the fact-paced, high-price lifestyle in Southern California. I left 3 years ago and couldn’t be happier. I can get to one end of Bullhead City, Arizona where I am now to the other end on Highway 95 in about 10-15 minutes. No beach, but there are Lakes and a big River here which mean plenty of sandy beaches.
rlee, Probably not a fair statement. If his wife is adamant she does not want to go, what husband would go against that? And, I am like you. I like living in Frisco TX near my family. South Orange County is beautiful and I miss the weather and the beauty, but Frisco reminds me very much of Irvine in the 1970’s. It is really nice place to live. We escaped the traffic, congestion and crowds also. My wife wanted to live near our daughter so we moved from Chino area to Visalia. Small town atmosphere with the amenities. Sadly, still in CA though. I do have lots of fishing lakes and rivers close by, so it isn’t that bad. It is part of the reason why we have started to follow Fresno St more closely, people are crazy here for the Bulldogs.
Do you think their kids will sway mom’s mind over moving or not? The beach, Disney, hollywood, mountains, what kids would want to stay in Ohio. Cin has a river and that is it.
Not sure Steveg. Growing up, my family moved from Glendale, CA to Sacramento as my Dad’s Electrical Contracting work for the LA City School System dried up in 1962. We lived in Sacramento and neither my Mom or me could stand it. My sister went to a good High School, then entered UC Davis when I was in 5th grade. We ended up moving back to Glendale in 1967 when my Dad’s foster father passed away. Us kids never really had ANY say as we grew up in an environment where children “were to be seen and not heard”.
One thing I’ve learned in life, when it is just you and your Queen, it’s an even match, when the Queen gives you(in Fickells case) 6 off springs, she thusly becomes the family Matriarch, now you are at a disadvantage. She considers ALL of the family’s happiness, future and security, not just Luke’s.
If she believes his best chance for achievement and happiness lies in his staying and moving to the BIG12, he has a choice to make.
Go Chargers! Every week they have held their opponents to their lowest offensive totals. It’s not all Justin Herbert! It’s the Charger D as well.
Just read Donte lost his father last week. I’m sure all Trojans are sending prayers his way.
His dad is the reason he came to LA. I hope he stays with the new HC.
Donte made players and coaching staff runs sprints for penalties. Not sure I’ve heard of coaches running before. I’m OK with any culture change. Go Donte.

Jerry West through Kobe is about a 50 year span.
Showing my age. I loved Wilt also.
I’m 46, so I only really saw the showtime lakers through now.
Magic on the fast break was dazzling. Jabbar with the sky hook incredible, and Chick Hearn was all time greatest announcer ever.
Add in James Worthy, Michael Cooper and Byron Scott and you have championship team.
Who was the white guy with the black glasses, can’t remember his name. Rambis or something?
Kurt Rambis. Check out the clothesline that Kevin McHale gave him. Dirty Celtic cheater.
I loved that rivalry, I still cannot root for the Celtics.
Hate them. I hope they lose every game they play.
Kurt Superman Rambis. All hustle and effort!
Ya know John, that team literally owned Los Angeles. They could do no wrong.
Jerry West pulled up at the top of the key, swish, automatic points. He had Elgin Baylor as his wingman. They were both Hall of Famers.
Pretty sure that’s some false bravado there. Also, if true it’s very sad and lame.
The King of the One Night Stands, or the One Night Orgies.
Whatever the number was, I think we get the point Wilt!
Holy cow, that is beyond my comprehension.
Biggest problem I have accepting that number is that from a sheer probability point of view, there would be several hundred little Wilts resulting. I don’t recall ever hearing even one paternity claim. Maybe someone else has…
I never thought of that humorous and enlightening angle before. Good point though.
20,000 women comes out to just how many broken prophylactics?
That Wilt must have been quite a charmer!
@Steveg My only concern is his performance in bowl games, his teams have usually been underachievers.
He has a .798% win percentage in the Big12, not bad.
USC sure needs someone who can coach up a winner,… Read more »
Good thoughts for sure. I wish Bohn would give us a little bit on what he may be looking for, but I also know he has to play it close to the vest.
Add FSU and Miami to that list as well.
Oh hell no to Franklin. He’s Gomer the Cat with a goatee.
Greatest Rose Bowl I ever saw, right after my second one, 42-37 over… Read more »
Hey, you and I were at the same game. I was there too. We sat half way up in the south end zone.
The most successful HCs at USC were ‘West Coast guys, McKay, Robo 1 & PC.
McKay had his way, Robinson his… Read more »
Exactly.
LA is 100% a raider town.
Not hearing the Raiders fans right now….
They are no good, but there are more Raider fans in LA than rams snd chargers combined.
Very true; it is amazing how people become attached to the Raiders.
It’s amazing how many Raider fans like to beat the heck out of people in public at games. Seems like there’s a slight Hells Angels, the Wild Ones mentality going on there — for lack of a much better comparison.
USC (per Yahoo stats) is 58th in country in yards per game ………..Utah is 155th . Wonder if that difference will show up this Saturday ?……FIGHT ON !!!!!
I loved this one-handed TD catch!
“In the meantime, there are reasons beyond his team’s recent performance to stay put, keep building and not rock the boat with his happy family.” Why did McCollough bring this up, because Amy Fickell expresses her non interest in moving to L.A.… Read more »
Never underestimate two things-
there are programs that can be good for a while and maybe great for a year.
So who do you think USC will get?
Rather than entertain conjecture or some abstract speculation, try this:
https://www.si.com/college/alabama/bamacentral/new-contract-details-announced-for-nick-saban
Completed earlier this year, aligns with both my and Allen’s thoughts as to a salary it will take to get a good coach at SC, there are no great coaches available in this hiring cycle aside from Saban and Meyer, neither are coming to the rescue.
Well, we’d better find one everybody thinks is NOT available, because you can’t run Donte as interim past this season.
When viewing the current options, from a business perspective you have to look at value received for dollars… Read more »
Franklin gets $8 million from Pervert State. He ain’t worth that and we would likely need to pay him more to move on from PA.
Fickell’s… Read more »
If Oklahoma goes undefeated they get in all day over Cinn. Even if they only won each game by 1.
I think he is an over-rated coach at best.
If we wanted Fickell, Bohn should have gone after him hard a couple of years ago. You snooze, you lose. It sounds like he’s all-Midwest anyway.
Hey Rjj, isn’t the Frisco-Plano area all ex californians? We bought property in Rock Wall and that is what everyone told us.
Not really. We live in a large retirement community called Frisco Lakes (it has about 3,000 individual single story single family homes). It is divided up by Sections of about 250 homes each. In our Section, I know of only two other couples from California (Orange County and SLO area). We have neighbors from MN, KS, AZ, IL, TX, OH, and assorted other states. In our Section, not many Californians that I know of. To reiterate, Frisco reminds me very much of Irvine in the early to mid-1970’s. It is a very nice place to live.
Regarding Amy Fickell…
One thing I’ve learned in life, when it is just you and your Queen, it’s an even match, when the Queen gives you(in Fickells case) 6 off springs, she thusly becomes the family Matriarch, now you are at a disadvantage. She considers ALL of the family’s happiness, future and security, not just Luke’s.
If she believes his best chance for achievement and happiness lies in his staying and moving to the BIG12, he has a choice to make.
