Santa Margarita’s Trent Mosley is among the many highly-regarded local players who signed with USC on Wednesday. (Craig Weston)Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — When Pete Carroll was at the height of his powers at USC, the legendary coach made it a point to own the California recruiting scene. In turning the Trojans into perennial title contenders, Carroll set out to “put a fence” around the Southland, to keep all of its top prospects at home, in cardinal and gold.
It turned out to be a winning strategy. But recruiting the best players in your own backyard, as Carroll saw it, wasn’t really rocket science.
“It seemed like common sense,” Carroll told The Times in 2006, after the Trojans had signed back-to-back recruiting classes ranked No. 1 overall.
Yet since Carroll’s exit, his successors at USC haven’t made it look so simple. Any semblance of USC’s local supremacy under Carroll was ceded completely over the past decade as other college football powers, such as Ohio State or Oregon, planted their own flags on the Trojans’ home turf. The problem only festered further under Lincoln Riley, as the coach initially cast a wider net nationally, aiming for top prospects in states like Texas and Florida while local stars signed and shined elsewhere.

Riley waited until his fourth season to return to the strategy that worked so well for Carroll.
And it took less than one year after that for USC to return to the top of the recruiting world.
The coronation became official Wednesday, as USC inked the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation on early signing day, marking the first time in almost two decades that the Trojans stood atop the recruiting throne of college football.
Not only that, it’s the first time since 2008, according to 247 Sports, that a school outside of the Southeastern Conference finished with the nation’s top class. And for Riley, it’s the first time he’s signed a top five class, let alone the No. 1 overall.
He reached those heights this cycle, much like Carroll had, with local prospects leading the way. Of the Trojans’ 35 signees Wednesday, 20 came from the state of California. Seven of the state’s top 25 prospects, as ranked by 247 Sports, chose USC, while no other school signed more than four from that top tier. Eight players in the class come from the powerhouse Trinity League, after USC had signed just five in the previous four classes combined.
Among that group were four blue-chip prospects from Santa Ana Mater Dei High, the preps powerhouse that once produced Matt Leinart and had long served as a prime pipeline to USC. That relationship had fallen by the wayside until recently.
But on Wednesday morning, in the gym at Mater Dei, name placards were set up for top tight end Mark Bowman, four-star top-100 defensive lineman Tomuhini Topui and four-star linebacker Shaun Scott — as well as elite wideout Kayden Dixon-Wyatt, whose flip from Ohio State to USC on signing day morning became one of the bigger stories of the day.
The late flip of Dixon-Wyatt proved to be the pièce de résistance Wednesday from general manager Chad Bowden, whose arrival less than a year ago has transformed the Trojans’ recruiting operation.
Before, Riley had ruffled some feathers locally when he implied that many local players on USC’s roster were only there because they were from local schools. Mater Dei hadn’t sent a prospect to USC since 2022. Just one player, prior to Wednesday, had signed with Riley out of Bellflower St. John Bosco.
“Hiding behind the curtain of, ‘Well, at least we’re recruiting California kids’ doesn’t do the program any good,” Riley said in 2023.
But Bowden made it clear within weeks of being on the job that USC’s focus would start first and foremost in Southern California. He said in January that he viewed the local 2026 class as the best the Southland had seen in two decades — nevermind that Bowden was in the fifth grade at the start of that cycle.
“Back when national championships were won here, when Rose Bowls were won here, you know, you look back at Pete Carroll’s classes — ‘02, ‘03, ‘04 — over 80% of the recruiting classes were from the state of California,” Bowden said in January. “History repeats itself. It always does. And if you look into the fine details of how programs are built and how the place was built and when success had happened, that was a key part of USC being on top. My plans and my vision is to bring that back and take care of the state.”
That plan began with repairing relationships in the local recruiting scene, many of whom had felt slighted by USC.
“We’re going to take care of those people, and they’re going to know that we’re here,” Bowden said. “That’s not done over one call. That’s not a text message every day. It’s done through consistent communication and action.”

In a three-month span, from March to June, USC secured commitments from 10 in-state prospects. Recruits and their parents, coaches and local football power brokers alike have all equally raved about Bowden’s efforts since.
“It’s amazing how much better their class looks when they start to prioritize the local kids and keep those guys home,” said Brandon Huffman, the national recruiting editor for 247 Sports. “Their whole philosophical change paid off in a major way.”
A renewed focus on the line of scrimmage was also a clear focus of USC’s class, as nearly half (15) of the Trojans’ 35 signees were either offensive or defensive linemen or edge rushers. Offensive tackle Keenyi Pepe (71), USC’s top-ranked signee at No. 5 overall, is the first five-star offensive lineman to sign with the school since Austin Jackson in 2017.
Four USC signees are the top recruits in their respective home states: edge rusher Luke Wafle (New Jersey), CB Elbert Hill (Ohio), four-star quarterback Jonas Williams (Illinois) and four-star linebacker Talanoa Ili (Hawaii).
Increased resources to pay players hasn’t hurt USC’s efforts, either. It’s no coincidence that the Trojans saw a rush of commitments last spring and into early summer, just before the House settlement went into effect on July 1. Those deals were front-loaded so as to avoid the $20.5 million revenue share cap for the 2025 season. ESPN reported this week that the price tag for the incoming class would cost “north of $9 million.”
USC certainly isn’t alone in that regard, as revenue sharing and name, image and likeness payments have become a prime part of the process. That’s not a dynamic that Carroll ever had to deal with as coach.
But on Wednesday, USC returned to the same hallowed recruiting ground that Carroll once owned, with the nation’s top class in tow and a newfound hope that 2026 might just be the start of something even bigger.

I watched the B1G CCG and came away thinking that either team could win that game, it all depended on how the ball bounced. In the end they should be ranked Indiana #1a and tOSU #1b. I would love to see a 7 game series with the two teams. Great game.
Ohio State—–56 four stars——-13 five stars
USC——39 four stars——-3 five stars
Indiana——7 four stars——0 five stars
I wonder who has the best coaching staff?
Throw in SOS and number of injuries. I have always felt SOS is way underrated, hence the SEC always getting great rankings. Indiana has really good coaching, so does tOHS.
I still back Riley and I think he is going to change some minds in the next couple of seasons. If not, then we will change Riley to something else.
Curt Cignetti basically reinvented the CFB rehab wheel.
Now there’s a guy who knows how to build a program.
Cignetti’s lit a fire under under the entire college football world. He’s done the impossible, make the always lowly Hoosiers into real football champions. And it only took him two years. And he did it without great players.
What a story. Can’t wait to see how these CFB playoffs shake out. Go Hoosiers!
Both Mendoza and Becker mentioned tram culture in their post game interviews. It’s real, and a direct result of Cignetti, and a perfect example of how important a strong leader and culture is to a team.
Thanks for the research, that’s mind blowing.
Two former Trojans that have had great seasons with their transfer portal teams:
Romello Height, LB for Texas Tech–why did we lose him?
Zechariah Branch, receiver/returner for UGA. Does anyone else feel like Branch was really dogging it during his sophomore season at SC after a phenomenal freshman year? It sure seems like this was the case….
Yes.
IU beats OHIO ST 13-10 in an amazing defensive struggle sprinkled with some incredible gutsy calls, ending the Buckeyes’ 30-game win streak over the Hoosiers.
Curt Cignetti is a god.
QB Fernando Mendoza had a great game. Heisman here we come.
A coaching god, absolutely. The Head Coach is everything in CFB.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see OSU and Indiana meet again this year. If they do, I’m going with OSU.
How can you not love Indiana and Cignetti?
IU takes the lead over OHIO ST 13-10 with eight mins to go in the 3rd Q.
This is the first time the Buckeyes have trailed in the 2nd half all season.
Boy did the men’s hoops team ever collapse. Lost to Washington after having an 18 point lead to start 2nd half.
It unanimous. All the talking heads on Fox pregame today like OHIO ST to win by anywhere from six to 14 points.
Go Hoosiers!!!
Can they shock the world? Sure would be nice.
The 3-stars vs the 5-stars. Can the little guy win it all? Can David beat Goliath?
They look much more competitive than AL did against GA. Bama was never in the game and looked outmatched from the opening kick.
Zach Branch looking very good for the Bulldogs today, as usual. He just scored a nifty, electric TD to put GA up 28-7. Amazing acceleration, stop-start ability.
ALA, now with three losses, should be dropped out of the playoffs.
Both MIA and ND should be in, which fixes that head-to-head issue..
Not sure what is going on but so far through the entire Bama/GA game we have not had to watch or listen to one commercial. We just have a live picture of the field for 3 minutes. Kind of nice.
Look at the top teams in CFB, especially the conference leaders and which side has the better athletes? Has Riley ever had a team where his defense was the best part? Maybe Chad Bowden will change this attitude, maybe. I can’t see USC winning the Big Ten giving up over two hundred even three hundred rushing yards each game. As for this season as well Riley’s previous seasons here, the defense was the cause of the losses preventing any chance to be a conference champion.
If I have learned anything watching Lincoln Riley coach USC, it’s that defense wins championships. I know that’s a gross overgeneralization, but you can’t be beat if you can’t be scored on.
OHIO ST allows 7.75 pts per game.
LR needs a lot of talent to win big because although he’s a good coach and may develope into a great coach some day…..right now there are many better coaches in american college football. LR is the 3rd highest paid coach in college football. He’s nowheres near the 3rd best coach in college football. There are a lot of coaches out there that are winning big with much less talent.
Overmatched BYU is getting beat up so badly by TT (34-7 with four mins to go) that any Alamo Bowl USC plays against the 11-2 Cougars will be shadowed by their complete demolition today. JMHO.
Wow, worse than the last time they played!
Only SI thinks 12.5 pt game day dog/#11 BYU has a shot at beating #4 TT
TT will not cover the spread. That is MHO.
And now it’s down to -5.5
Micah Banuelos, IOL, going to portal.
A lot of these guys is just a matter of the school telling them to move on because they probably won’t be playing much at SC. When you bring in 35 people you must get rid of a lot of players. Otherwise, you will have 140 players on your roster. Some may have decided to leave to go where they will get more playing time(Gus Cordova and a few others). But a lot of these guys are being asked to move on. And there’s a lot more coming. Don’t forget, it’s not just the 35 who are coming in. SC… Read more »
Another One Bites the Dust! Chris Trevino (USCFootball.com) — Overall, Micah Banuelos is the 10th Trojan with the intention to enter the portal when it opens on Jan. 2. Banuelos finished the season playing 453 total snaps, including 384 on offense. He earned a 52.2 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, including a 59.1 pass-block grade and a 47.7 run-block grade. He allowed seven pressures, including one sack on 221 pass-block snaps, per PFF. Banuelos earned a 65.8 special teams grade for his blocking on the Trojans’ kick unit. With only J’Onre Reed exhausting his eligibility across the offensive line, Banuelos would have likely been in… Read more »
Lane Kiffin Shades OLE MISS, Says LSU is ‘#JustDifferent’ After Top Recruits Sign
Former Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin seemingly threw shade at his Rebels recruiting classes shortly after the end of his first early signing period with LSU.
Kiffin shared a social media post on Friday which pointed out he had “signed more 5 stars in 5 days at #LSU than he did in 6 years at Ole Miss.”
Does this guy look happy, or what?!
Julia Stumbaugh/bleacherreport.com
Well, now Lane is just being a dick. Thought he had grown up, but I guess not.
Lane’s visor found no peace at Old Miss.
Egocentric, narcissistic spoiled child coach.
Is it too soon to compute his LSU buy out?
World famous architect Frank Gehry died today at the age of 96 at his home in Santa Monica. Gehry received his bachelor’s degree in architecture from USC in 1954. In 2010, Vanity Fair called him “the most important architect of our age.”
Gehry, born in Toronto in 1929, is known for his postmodern designs and use of bold, unconventional forms and materials. His most famous works include the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in L.A. (below), and the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris.
I recently watched a series talking about cutting edge, one of a kind designs were actually built. I think there were six episodes and Gehry’s buildings were half of the series. Wildly creative and worked practically until the day he died.
The Cyclones Waste No Time
IA ST has already hired 38-yr old Jimmy Rogers, the HC from WSU, to replace Matt Campbell, who has taken the PSU job, just when it looked like the Nittany Lions were about out of highly-regarded options. Rogers, a winner with FCS success at S DAK ST, agreed to a six-yr deal.
Rogers only spent one season as HC at WSU, and led the Cougars to a bowl eligible 6-6 season.
This is great. Georgia is suing a player for $390,000 for breach of contract. It was a buyout he had to pay if he left early before his NIL contract was up. Thats got to be a first. Maybe it will slow down all these transfers.
Chris Henry has signed with OHIO ST.
If he had gone to the ducks they would have passed USC as #1. This locks USC in with #1 class, for whatever thats worth. Bragging rights for one, but USC got everyone they wanted, that was the big win.
And we would have to face him next year either way.
Maybe he’ll transfer back to USC. I couldn’t care less, but In today’s new CFB world, surprise moves by both coaches and players are more common than ever. USC’s always loaded at WR, kind of like the Buckeyes in that regard.
Since USC will see Henry next year I wonder if he’s good enough to make his mark on the field right away at OHIO ST? He’s one of those freak guys it seems. Some think he might grow into a TE, which wouldn’t’ be bad either, though I doubt that will happen.
Signing day(s) no longer have the sense of finality it used to. If you lost a recruit, that was that. Now, a missed recruit this year might be next year’s transfer in with a year of development under his belt.
Ya, the old signing day set up was simply fantastic. It was like a day of rolling thunder. People cheering. Some fans despairing. Everyone on pins and needles. Hope. Relief. Even anger. All this build-up for one day, when 99% of kids signed. Fax machines in all the athletic depts were telling the story, minute by minute, hour by hour. Before the internet, you couldn’t track the build up on-line. Schools had to release lists to the media, so everyone pretty much assumed commitments would stick, which of course didn’t always happen. Kids would be hiding out (sometimes placed in… Read more »
“The”Ohio State doesn’t have a mascot drawn by a Disney artist for a couple of reasons. First they told the artist they wanted a walking talking nut… the artist gave them Goofy. Next Disney objected to all the Marijuana leaves they put on their helmets.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Woody Hayes was first persuaded to commemorate big plays with buckeye stickers by former head athletic trainer Ernie Biggs. “Woody wasn’t really huge on heaping praise on guys,” said Larry Romanoff, who retired after 43 years in various roles with OHIO ST. “I don’t know how long it took Ernie and the guys to convince Woody to do that.” It was Oct. 7, 1967, the second game of the season, and OHIO ST had defeated ORE 30-0 in Eugene. Jim Nein returned a pick 45 yds for the first sticker-worthy performance in Ohio State history. “Three stickers would fill the… Read more »
Big improvement. Only Penn St could pull it off.
Yeah, but Campbell did it with 3 and lower star players, unlike Franklin. Not as much of an indictment on Campbell.
Regardless, I wish both of these guys LITTLE success. Campbell because PSU harbored a pedophile on their staff for years and should be cursed forever. Franklin because he is the most overrated HC in college football.
Yes, I’m cranky this morning.
PSU to hire IA ST’s Matt Campbell as next head coach: reports
Penn State’s head coaching search lasted for nearly 2 months
Ryan Canfield/Fox News
Sounds like Penn St finally found someone willing to come. Matt Campbell from Iowa St. Not a done deal yet, but getting wrinkles ironed out today.
A year ago at this time, USC already had six reg season losses under its belt, had just been belted in the Coliseum by Notre Dame 49-35, and Chad Bowden was living in South Bend. Losing close games had become a USC trademark. We even got whipped by the eternal doormat MARYD Terps. Those were dark Trojan days with Paul Finebaum, Bill Plaschke, and much of the CFB media all over LR like a wet, cheap suit. As a result, USC entered 2025 unranked (yes, it matters) and was never able to even barely crack the top 25 until beating pitiful PUR in mid Sept. It’ll… Read more »
I am more confident that we can navigate the portal the right way with Chad Bowden in charge. I believe the focus will be on quality, not quantity. In Chad we trust
All I care about is getting a starting linebacker or two.
Go Hoosiers!
Something that continues in the back of my mind is Bowden. It seemed that it took but a few minutes for him to catapult USC into the top echelon of CFB recruiting. Of course Jen effectuated it by bringing him over. Anyway, how long will Bowden stick around waiting for Riley to stop “learning on the job” stop the Mike Leach impersonation and mimic the Natty fundamentals you see from the likes of Smart, Saban, Cignetti, Day, on and on? You know, balance, a great defense, oh how about the importance of special teams ( and a coach ), focusing… Read more »
Bowden has truly been a godsend, and at the expense of Notre Dame as well.
Nothing pleased me more about USC football this year than to see a true recruiting pro take over the reigns at USC.
I was originally skeptical of Bowden’s no-external-visit policy for committed prospects.
But USC completely pulled this off in amazing fashion, and did so I think with spectacular organization, constant recruit contact, a smart visit strategy, and fostering a strong sense of comradeship between the incoming preps.
And his policy resulted in no signing day flips to other teams. I haven’t heard of any other major programs who didn’t have at least one signing day flip.
Notre Dame didn’t have any flips either based on my info.
Two CFB giants. Will we continue to play and if so, under what new arrangement?
I would love to see them play the second game of the season every year. They would melt in the L.A. heat and we wouldn’t freeze in the South Bend lake effect cold.
I agree. An early season loss would be recoverable. If ND can overcome a home loss to NIU early in the season, then they can certainly rebound from a loss to the Trojans in September.
I would like to see an October 1 game every year. The final non-conference game. We play a couple of lesser programs, take our first bye-week to fix what’s not working and prep for the Irish.
I agree with all, I was concerned about the visit policy but I should have known if this guy (Bowden) implements something, it’s a high probability of success. Now let’s keep him.
If LR had any class, he should drop a million off his contract and give it to Bowden. He has improved the program more in one year than Riley has in four.
Truthfully, that’s a clever idea. Not only does it minimize Bowden being poached by our opponents, but it also sends a message that LR is aware of his great importance to the program, but also to his coaching survival at USC. With the 2026 schedule, arguably the toughest in CFB, LR needs to consider this. I’m not sure LR can read the room on this one though.
No I doubt Riley can read the room.
Seriously, he will get $100 million on the insane contract he signed. How much less secure will his life be if he only has $94 million? Even living in the expensive state of Kommiefornia.
But we all know that our wunderkind head coach intern can’t take the hit to his ego if he truly acknowledged with his wallet the good Bowden has done for his football team.
I am much less critical of LR now than I was a year ago. Balanced offense, few head scratching play calls, clock management better just a few questionable moments. Still the team had rough 1st halves. Is that the game plan, lack of prep, lack of motivation. Come from behind wins in the 2nd half is better than late 4th qtr collapse. LR needs to get better on special teams Ryan Dougherty is not getting it done. Better talent may fix the penalty issue, if you are getting beat you have to cheat, good players force their opponent to make… Read more »
I can’t argue your points GT and I want LR to be one of the best. Fight on !!!
You would not believe what Indiana is like right now. Hoosier T shirts everywhere.
I’d love to see them play Notre Dame. Wouldn’t you? Who would you be rooting for?
It’s so amazing to be categorizing the Hoosiers as an elite football team. It literally feels bizarre to speak of them as a CFB power. New to the block, but a power for sure under Cignetti.
It’s funny how quickly things can change within a program, even in just one day, or over a few weeks or months.
So many programs headed so many different directions. Everything moves so fast now. I sincerely think CFB needs a commissioner, like the NFL.
Go Hoosiers!
That’s because it’s a football school (now).
Bobby Knight might have already rolled over in his grave.
When the B1G set up the RCA dome as the perennial site for their conference championship game, they probably thought that it would be a neutral location, because Purdon’t and the Hosers would never be in the game. Ooops!🤣
USC players who have announced they will be leaving when the Portal opens for 15 days starting Jan. 2:
WR DJ Jordan
RB Bryan Jackson
CB Braylon Conley
DE Gus Cordova
OL Makai Saina
S Steve Miller
I have only heard of one of these guys. Next!
Ya, no biggee. Just makes room for the opportunity to reinforce and strengthen the Trojans. This incoming prep class will plug some holes both quickly and long term, and with some smart Portal choices, 2027 should be a big year.
We need to add Carlon Jones, DL and Matai Tagoa’i, LB are going portal.
Anthony Beavers, LB, entering the portal.
Played in 3 games got 1 tackle, no loss.
Didn’t play much.
Didn’t play much.
Super tough Amon-Ra St. Brown, the leader of the Lions, is having a great game as Detroit leads Dallas 20-9 at half.
George Carlin said, “I never had a 10, but one night I had five twos, and I think that should count.” I thought of that in relation to us pulling in a 35-player class. All the hubub about a number one class is mostly based upon the sheer number of recruits — which I understand we will pay for next year. Sorted by average star ranking, our class is around number 7, which still ain’t bad. I am not trying to throw cold water on the celebration or anything, but Oregon still pulled in 5 five-stars this year to our… Read more »
Your “untrained eyes” look 20/20 from here.
This class is a huge step for USC. I’ll take the 20 or so 4-stars any day of the week and I really like the need-filling balance of this class as well as the return to California as a target and the emphasis on the big uglies on both O and D.
Like my underwear…depends: Oregon, Ohio State, et al are already deep, so they can afford to pick and choose…and get the 5 stars. SC is building, so they need more 4 stars. They are both winners, and ratings are like my underwear…they need to be changed often.
Rocking the underwear similes! 😅
As usual Rock brings up a good point. A good class but great….no.
IMO combined with Riley…..not much change…….and as for special teams…..review our play at Oregon….what a mess…..NC teams don’t play that way.
One note….look out for Washington in two years…their class was #13 which with J Fisch is the kind of class that can get to the PO’s and make noise.
It’s the best UW class rankings-wise in the modern (Internet) era: 24 guys, #16 per Rivals and #13 per 247 as you say. California was good to UW, as usual, sending up seven kids.
Huge OT Kodi Greene from Mater Dei is a monster. RB Brian Bonner, DLs Derek Colman-Brusa and JD Hill, CB Jeron Jones, TE Sam Vyhlidal all look pretty damn good on tape.
Both USC and UW flipped some guys from ORE, always a good thing.
My goodness….Oregon signed Lott and is getting Gatlin Bair who is a 5 star that went on a mission 2 years ago. If Henry comes to them……holy cow! Stewart back from injury and Moore…..five elite WR’s on the same team.
Yep, Dan Lanning’s a recruit magnet and the Duck reach is far and wide. We gotta clip those wings sooner or later.
As far as Green…..you probably remember what Fisch did at Arizona with building a huge OL. Everybody on the line was 330 plus….some 350…..well…..its looks like he is doing it at Washington….another year or two and then a line that just blows you off the LOS. Talk about play action setup. Perfect for the BIG.
The Huskies were my dad’s favorite team, so I’ve always kind of had a soft spot for them. I’ve been to Seattle to see the Trojans play there and it was a wonderful trip in the rain, even though we lost. Great, hospitable UW fans and such a beautiful set-up.
We get the Huskies in the Coliseum next season. What a schedule!
If the internet knows what it’s talking about. It looks like our trip to Penn St is going to be soft…..whew! Who knows about Indiana……maybe softer. Maybe not. We better hope so. So we know Ohio State, Oregon and if we play ND will all be dynamite. Washington and Wisconsin might both prove to be interesting…..maybe. Fisch could do it…..and Fickell returns. Fresno State….might be a game for a couple quarters. Rutgers…..there…..might be a game for 3/4…..or not….. With Riley…who knows. Maryland and UCLA ought to be soft although with the portal UCLA could be trouble if the QB returns.… Read more »
We all wish USC was in the playoffs. I think, that is. ð Personally, based on how USC looked vs ND and ORE, I don’t think USC is honestly ready for the playoffs at this stage. I think we’d be quickly beat, at least with our untrustworthy D which is so capable of being badly bashed. The Alamo Bowl sounds like a game we probably belong in at this stage. If we end up playing BYU, that would probably be a great opponent for us. Plus we owe the Cougars (led by WR Puka Nacua) who beat a 4-8 Trojan… Read more »
That would be a great matchup……honestly a great game!
I think so. I’d rather win a competitive bowl game than get overmatched before we are really ready.
The progress USC made this season is very substantial and Lincoln Riley deserves a lot of credit for that. But we had a long way to go. And the toughest part of USC’s progress still remains — the climb closer to the top
Also, they have the $$$$ to attract those players. Ducks have the best team money can buy by far. USC is coming on and putting up that fence around CA which is going to hurt the ducks in coming years. What we do in the portal is going to be crucial to the 2026 season.
Money is part of it but let’s not be fooled…..players want to play for a competent coaching staff that will develop them with great facilities. We brought on a nice class but only one 5 star. IMO one main reason is because players headed to the NFL know our head coach and his issues. Would you trust your future to Riley if you were a 5 star NFL prospect unless you were a QB or WR. Most are looking elsewhere. It’s crazy but Cal hiring Lupoi is actually going to help Lanning. Lupoi is a great recruiter but as a… Read more »
Dan Lanning’s also been a great coach for ORE. It’s not just the money that allowed ORE to dominate USC. Not even close. Lanning has looked far better than Lincoln Riley during his time at ORE thus far. Riley, who didn’t know much about rebuilding anything, stumbled badly in 2023 and 2024. His prep recruiting and Portal strategy was incredibly poor and off-base, and some of his unfortunate play calling was also ridiculously bad. Riley’s idea of defense was a sieve, and most of Riley’s original USC assts and staff all had to be fired. Fortunately, Jen Cohen got involved.… Read more »
I am so thankful that Jen Cohen had the vision to hire Chad Bowden. There is no way we pull in this class without his direction.Another class or two like this, and I don’t see how we can be kept out of the playoffs. Riley would have to really screw up
Jen Cohen has been nothing but good for Lincoln Riley. He may not have known that when she suddenly replaced overgenerous/under-informed Mike Bohn who hired him, but I’m sure he knows it now.
PSU is now after IA ST’s Matt Campbell. He’s 72-55 (50-40 Big 12) leading the Cyclones since 2016. After a 3-9 start, IA ST has had just one losing season since. They racked up five consecutive bowl appearances for the first time in school history and reached their first Big 12 championship game in a 2024 (11-3).
Remember when USC was toying with him as a possibility?
Kayne Miller to follow brothers King and Kaylon Miller to USC football
USC will have a third Miller brother on the team next season.
Connor Morrissette (USCFootball.com) — RB Kayne Miller (Calabasas, 5-11, 175), the younger brother of the USC walk-on sensations, committed to the Trojans as a preferred walk-on Thursday.
Miller earned an FCS offer from Utah Tech before USC asst GM Dre Brown offered Miller a PWO spot with the Trojans.
He rushed for 1,463 yds and 17 TDs this past season.

Utah Tech( formerly Dixie State) is in the town I reside in, St.George Utah. That being said, I hope he goes to USC as a PWO.
December 4, 2025 (Honolulu, HI) – The Polynesian Football Hall of Fame announced today nine finalists for the 2025 Polynesian High School Football Player of the Year Award. Latest Chris Henry Jr. intel: OHIO ST five-star WR commit remains unsigned amid ORE and WV pushes. USC and TEXAS likely no longer involved. National Signing Day came and went with OHIO ST five-star WR commit Chris Henry Jr. going unsigned. Here’s the latest into Thursday. Tom Loy (247sports.com) — Henry is “not sure” what his plans are, he told 247Sports Wednesday, as we relayed on our Signing Day show. That remains the case Thursday. Wednesday afternoon, he said that he “probably” would make a decision on Thursday. Will things wrap up Thursday? There is a lot of uncertainty, sources around several schools… Read more »
If Oregon or OSU sign Henry that will put them past USC for number one.
In all honesty, do you really care? Maybe so. Nothing wrong with that. But here’s an argument supporting why it now makes no difference At this stage, what diff does a #1, #2, or #3 ranking rate? I would say absolutely none, unless final recruiting rankings simply mean more to you than they do to me. At that top 10 level, you’re talking pure unadulterated subjectivity, bias, or ranking methodology. Sometimes, one five-star turns out to be more important than five other 5-stars combined. Future Injuries, coaching, luck, strength and conditioning, and a few more things are all in control… Read more »
All great points Allen. It’s the story of the day so it’s fun. USC is loaded with great 4* talent. I would rather have 21 4*s than 4-5 five stars. Depth is more important that a couple of stars that get double teamed. JMHO.
If recruiting rankings are anyone’s bag, we won on LOI Day, the day it all counts when all the eyeballs were on USC, coast-to-coast.
Every time I switched to another recruiting source of info or program yesterday, USC was front and center. I’ve never seen the USC logo displayed more times in one day than yesterday.
Mission accomplished. Great job by Bowden, Riley, and all the other behind-the-scenes people who made this happen for the Trojans.
It finally seems like everyone is rowing hard in the same direction. Now, let’s win the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30 in San Antonio.
Is this the largest class ever at USC?
Yes. Next — 30 came in 2011, under Lane Kiffin.
Especially at this stage of USC’s roster building journey.
I don’t remember a recruiting class with so many players who keep their hands in the dirt. Sound like they are good ones, too.
I think Trent Mosley paried with the 6’5″ Henry would be similar if not even better than Lemon/Lane, but thats just MHO. I would love to see USC pick him up, even at the cost of losing others.
Just one question….do you miss your SuperPrep days?
It was an awful lot of fun. One of the better moves I ever made in my life was to quit law and start SuperPrep. It was also very difficult, as I had no experience in publishing of any sort, nor did I have any scouting experience or relationship inroads into HS or college football. Basically, I knew not of what I was walking into, which is probably good. But being a lawyer was very helpful to me in many respects. And I got very lucky because I chose to enter a field in 1985 that was brutally undeveloped pre-Internet… Read more »
Thanks for the response. Such a unique adventure in life, a niche you discerned and from which you carved out a career. Well done, and thanks for SuperPrep, which I often enjoyed.
Here’s what ESPN (Craig Haubert) has to say about the Trojans #1 class. 1. USC Trojans Previous ranking: 1 SC Next 300 commits: 18 Top offensive prospect: OT Keenyi Pepe Top defensive prospect: CB Elbert Hill No program has more 2026 momentum than USC under Lincoln Riley, especially after hiring general manager Chad Bowden away from Notre Dame. The Trojans have double-digit SC Next 300 commits, with several joining the list since January. That includes two five-stars to start May in Pepe and Hill, and a pair of four-star commits who flipped from Big Ten rival ORE: in-state defensive lineman Tomuhini Topui and quarterback Jonas Williams. Topui is a physical,… Read more »
Hopefully with a little S/C Pepe can put on some beef! 😂
More on Keenyi Pepe, one of SI’s 10 Most Important 2026 Signings Lincoln Riley has been trying to make USC into a legitimate Big Ten team since entering the league last season. In 2025, the Trojans showed the kind of physicality needed to win in the league during victories over Michigan, Nebraska, Northwestern, and Iowa. But the program needs more Big Ten bodies if it wants to continue that progression. Riley has a number of signings in his No. 1-ranked recruiting class who fit that bill, none more so than Keenyi Pepe, who is the top offensive tackle in the… Read more »
yeah, poor kid looks undernourished….
Oregon, ND and Alabama are less than 10 points from overtaking USC. Will there be more action today and tomorrow?
Coveted local TE Mark Bowman explains why he signed with USC football in the face of an unexpected late push from Lane Kiffin, LSU Connor Morrissette (USCFootball.com) — The early signing period has been fundamentally changed for the nation’s elite HS football prospects with NIL and revenue sharing deals now part of the equation. The contracts are more lucrative. The agents are more high profile. The decisions on where to play college football have never been more complex, which is why composite five-star Santa Ana Mater Dei TE Mark Bowman took so long to sign with USC Wednesday. Bowman was all… Read more »
I wonder how much was negotiating a new deal yesterday between Bowman and USC and LSU, and Dixon-Wyatt and USC and OSU? Chad Bowden’s phone must have been burning up!
Those bubble screens are going to work a lot better with Bowman in there. The defense doesn’t know where to play him. He’s just as good a wide receiver as most of SC’s WR’s and he’s a better blocker than most of the wideouts that they put in there to block the bubble screen.
Good point about Bowman on the bubble screen stuff. The guy can move, and as you say, he’ll block too.
Since Kiffin had him targeted from across country as someone he needed to fix the Tigers, it’s reassuring to know he’ll be improving the Trojans instead.
Sometimes they move a tight end out into that bubble screen trio to block. But when they do that the defense moves up because he’s not as much of a receiver threat and they feel they can cover him bump and run. It’s not so easy to do that with Bowman because he is a deep threat and they do run downfield routes from that formation.
Versatility is so huge nowadays. The ability to hurt an opponent in different ways.
There seems to be so much overall athleticism and football playing-ability in this USC 2026 group.
Will this class lead USC football back to the promised land? Only time will tell, but it’s obviously the best class by far that USC has signed since the juggernaut days of Pete Carroll.
It’s going in the right direction. It’s just going so slow. It didn’t take Pete Carroll that long at all. The 2001 year wasn’t all that impressive. But by the end of 2002, everyone knew that USC would soon win an NC. I haven’t arrived yet to that point with LR although it is going in the right direction.
Indeed, LR’s path at USC has been a thousand times more jaggedy than Pete’s! PC was a one-in-a-million coach at USC for almost ten years. But things have been looking up for USC ever since Jen Cohen decided to pay more attention to USC football. She brought in important people to help LR maximize his potential to do what he does best. So far, it seems to be working IMO. We’ve still got a long way to go, and the last chunk of progress is always the steepest road. But this 2026 signing class has turned out to be a… Read more »
Agreed. Also Pete Carroll was 50 years old when he became the coach at SC. He started coaching in 1973 so he had been coaching for 28 years when he started at SC. Lincoln Riley today is still only 42 years old. He started at SC when he was 38. He started coaching in 2003 so he’s only been coaching for 22 years. This guy is still evolving and he is a brilliant offensive mind. All he needs is to get someone in there who can build a great defense. That’s just a matter of hiring the right person because… Read more »
With Bowman as a deep threat, Hines as a deep threat, Dixon-Wyatt as a deep threat, and add in Feaster and Mosley USC has the capability to drive defensive backfields crazy. Then add in the running ability of our running backs on top of the run ability of Longstreet what do the defenses try to stop first. Going to be fun watching next season, although I am not going to be buying into the hype. Lets see it in person in September.

The Secret to USC’s Class of 2026 Recruiting Success USC finally had a plan and stuck to it Antonio Morales (The Athletic) — USC’s roster build under Riley lacked a concrete plan — until recently. The Trojans have recruited receivers well, but haven’t excelled at any other position. They didn’t thrive in recruiting in any particular area in the country. They weren’t a developmental program. They weren’t a major player NIL-wise. There was no identity. Highly-regarded football GM Chad Bowden came in this year with a plan and executed it. He said USC would prioritize its backyard and the state,… Read more »
USC is 8-0 and ranked #24 by the AP
Not just in football!
#1 in football and futball! Fight On!
USC’s football signees. No weak spots. #1!
Here they are, updated all day long.
This is the first time in 18 years that an SEC team has not won the Signing Day Championship
The Trojan Class of 2026 — 35 already signed
Not only does it appear USC will end with the #1 class, but it even gets better. The two highest rated players in ucla’s class flipped to Tennessee and Illinois. Rivals now ranks ucla’s class 72nd.
Poor sad and angry little gutties
Bowman finally got the LOI in, he is officially a Trojan, even though the ducks tried to flip him. Henry has not signed with anyone yet.
Nice to be back on top of the world in college football in at least one area.
Now we need to keep these players and use them in building a CFP Title Winner.
