Boogie Ellis helps USC erase big deficit during dominant win over UCLA
Ellis scores 27 of his career-high 31 points in the second half, igniting an 18-2 run that puts the Trojans ahead for good USC earns a 77-64 win, avenging a two-point loss at UCLA three weeks ago

Adam Grosbard (OC Register) — LOS ANGELES — After watching a furious second-half comeback fall short in painful fashion at Pauley Pavilion three weeks ago, USC’s veterans were not going to let history repeat itself against No. 8 UCLA on Thursday night.
After trailing by as many as 13 points, the Trojans had rallied to go up by nine. But the Bruins kept fighting back, as veteran teams do, to get within one possession.
But Boogie Ellis and Drew Peterson made pull-up jumpers to push the USC lead back to six. Ellis then came from behind to block a Tyger Campbell jumper. Ellis then cemented the win with a long 3-pointer, falling onto his back after a challenge from Amari Bailey as the ball swished through the net.
There would be no heartbreak for the Trojans on Thursday. Instead, USC took a 77-64 statement win against the Bruins, USC’s fifth straight over the crosstown rivals at the Galen Center.
Ellis led all scorers with a career-high 31 points, 27 of which came in the second half as he was serenaded with “M-V-P” chants during free throws in the final seconds. Peterson added 16 for the Trojans (15-6 overall, 7-3 Pac-12), while Jaime Jaquez Jr. led the Bruins (17-4, 8-2) with 15. David Singleton and Campbell added 14 points each for UCLA.
The comeback started innocently enough, a Peterson 3-pointer cutting the Bruins’ lead from 13 to 10. Kobe Johnson found Peterson cutting to the rim in transition for a layup, and the deficit was single digits.
Freshman Tre White got in on the act. A pump fake caught UCLA veteran Jaquez in the air and White ducked under the block attempt to make a mid-range jumper. A couple of possessions later, White dribbled back and nailed a 3-pointer.
Within four, Ellis took advantage of a little space on the perimeter and pulled up for a 3-pointer. Ellis clenched his fists at his sides as he went back up the court, the deficit sliced to one as the Bruins called a timeout.
But Ellis stole the ball from Campbell and pass up ahead to Reese Dixon-Waters, who sidestepped Campbell’s swipe to lay it in to give the Trojans the lead with 12:14 to play. Ellis and Johnson made 3-pointers, and the Trojans’ had their largest advantage of the game after an 18-2 run.
The Bruins were all kinds of discombobulated during this stretch, unable to solve the USC defense. UCLA went 1 for 10 from the floor, throwing up awkward shots when drives were stopped in the paint. Veterans threw the ball away, expecting teammates to cut one way when they went the other.
And the Trojans rushed UCLA off the 3-point line. After the Bruins went 6 for 11 from 3-point range in the first half, USC held UCLA to 2 for 7 in the second.
“We really started to hard hedge the ball screens, try to put pressure on their guards so Campbell couldn’t get in the lane,” USC coach Andy Enfield said.
A Singleton baseline jumper ended the Trojans’ advantage, and a Bailey put-back layup made it a one-possession game as the teams prepared for a fight across the last seven minutes.
But the Trojans – who improved to 10-1 at home this season – controlled both ends of the court in the second half, holding UCLA to an 8-for-27 mark from the floor while shooting 55.6% themselves.
At first, it seemed like the rematch would follow the script of the first game. UCLA had a third-chance basket on the opening possession and Adem Bona turned a missed free throw into a dunk, setting the tone for a half in which the Bruins had 10 second-chance points to USC’s one.
Despite the clear mismatch on the glass, USC took an early 12-6 lead thanks to back-to-back cross-court passes from Peterson that turned into corner 3-pointers. But a Campbell 3-pointer ended USC’s 7-0 run as the Trojans fell into a long drought.
USC went 7:26 without a field goal, going 0 for 7 from the floor in that period. Another Bona dunk and split free throws from the freshman center got UCLA within two. Then Peterson was called for a flagrant on a loose ball and Jaylen Clark tied the score with two free throws. A Jaquez 3-pointer put the Bruins back ahead as an 11-0 run put UCLA up 20-14.
By the time USC responded with a Peterson 3-pointer and a pull-up by Vincent Iwuchukwu to cut the deficit back to one, UCLA had found its rhythm. Singleton hit a 3-pointer and Bailey followed that with a steal and layup.
Peterson attempted a backward, overhead pass that never came close to finding the cutter. The turnover was converted into another Singleton 3-pointer. The guard bounced back up the court, eyes closed as he spun with jubilation at the Bruins’ 12-point lead.
The joy would be short-lived, though, as USC orchestrated a second-half comeback that this time stuck and reignited the Trojans’ hopes for a bid to the NCAA tournament.
“We needed a big statement win,” Andy Enfield said. “We almost had it at Pauley three weeks ago. Our team is playing very well, they’ve improved a lot. That’s what we like to see. It’s fun to see the progression of teams. This team, we weren’t sure what we had, especially after we lost on opening night. So we’re very proud of our guys hanging in there and improving.”

Nice that we’re recruiting well. This is starting to feel like the good old days of Pete Carroll again. Now just need to start winning some championships.
Big (6-5, 180) 4-star WR Ja’Kobe Lane is a Trojan. He’s a physical jump-ball specialist who likes to mix it up, and has great hands. A super competitive red zone weapon from the look of his tape. Last season at Phoenix Red Mountain (AZ), Lane caught 65 passes for 823 yds and 11 TDs. SI.com — “Lane joins a USC class loaded with talent at wideout — 5-star WR Zachariah Branch and 4-star wideout Makai Lemon signed with the Trojans in Dec. USC’s WR roster for 2023 includes Brenden Rice, Kyron Hudson, Mario Williams, Tahj Washington, Michael Jackson III, Dorian… Read more »
4-star CB Rodrick Pleasant from Gardena Serra has just committed to ORE over USC.
Donte Williams who came to USC from ORE strikes out big-time.
So, SC gets another WR (which is not a position of need) and loses out on a DB (which might be a position of need). But, I get it. Domani Jackson has two years left as does Ceyair and I think the kid that beat out Ceyair. SC just brought in another experienced CB, so really not much chance to break into the starting rotation for at least one maybe two years. And, to be honest, to date, Donte has not developed his kids. I do not think any of Donte’s kids are starting in the NFL. I know Chris… Read more »
Some will discount USC’s addition of another wideout, but these guys get nicked up a lot. It’s a high-injury position as USC has most recently learned the hard way with Jordan Addison and Drake London.
Wish we could have got him but we’ll be okay without him. Wish him luck at Oregon but hoping we kick their butts this fall when we go there.
Agreed. Beating the Ducks on Nov. 11 in Eugene with our last Pac-12 team could be the most crucial game of our entire season. Gotta win it.
USC went to the mat for Pleasant, but the Ducks flat-out beat us on a local big-time feeder school talent here in a need position. They’re darn good recruiters, but at least USC now has the overall talent and coaching to handle ORE this season.
Despite losing Pleasant, today has still been very good for USC in the talent addition department. Not perfect. But that’s always the enemy of the good anyway.
Can we do better than Donte Williams on the staff?
TE Walker Lyons to USC “I’d been talking mostly with coach (Zach) Hanson but also with coach (Lincoln) Riley too, they’re the main ones,” said the 6-5, 235 pound Lyons from El Dorado Hills Folsom (CA), previously committed to STAN before David Shaw resigned. “They both text me and recruit me the most at USC. I know they haven’t really used the tight end as much at USC, but in the past, at Oklahoma, they used their tight end a lot, like Mark Andrews and Grant Calcaterra. If they have a tight end who is really dynamic and they like,… Read more »
On this vastly reduced impact Feb 1 LOI Day, Tom Brady finally hangs ’em up.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1620772095889403905
I’m sure he’ll “unretire” like Favre. I’m taking bets on Facebook as to how long it will take him to return to the NFL=No Fun League.
Nah. Brady’s done. The newly single dad finally got closure with this last disaster season and his wicked public divorce. 23 years. Seven Super Bowl wins. 649 TDs. It’ll never be duplicated and my hat’s off to him. I think he is the GOAT, and if anyone believes a different QB currently deserves that title, who would you choose?
Happier Days
Some guys don’t know what to do when they retire. Especially when there is fame involved. I hope he doesn’t pull a Stetson Bennett and get drunk and knock on doors in the wee hours in a strange town.😎
Brady has already signed a 10-year Fox deal for $375 mil.
The problem Fox has now is that former NFLer Greg Olsen is the analyst for the Super Bowl and doing a tremendous job so far this season.
Should be interesting to see if the GOAT can also make himself somehow invaluable as part of a top TV crew that doesn’t seem to need him, especially in view of the size of his deal.
Yeah, I know about the broadcasting deal, but it isn’t playing ball in the arena. Hard to give that up sometimes.
He’ll never find the same competitive experience these NFLers get used to, but something tells me that uber-focused Brady won’t have trouble drilling into something else. Jane Fonda’s gone gaga over him in soon-to-be-released 80 For Brady. Hanoi Jane, as she used to be called, spoke at SC in April 1973 in front of Bovard when I was there. I think I somehow “accidentally” touched her shoulder as she squeezed her way by me through a massive throng of Trojan students. Let’s face it. She was awesome looking and had recently made the semi-porn flick Barbarella, quite the attraction at… Read more »
I think the debate is over, it’s not even close. With that, there’s been 20 guys I’d rather watch just due to their incredible play making.
Colin Cowherd’s (for lack of a better source) top five QBs are Brady, Manning, Mahomes, Montana and Elway. After those legends, he placed Rodgers, Marino, Staubach and Favre, off the top of his head.
Any changes you would make, or other QBs you would substitute in?
Off the top of my head, just QB’s I’ve seen play in my lifetime
Ya, Brees was awesome too. Good addition. He didn’t have the personality for the TV world but as far as accuracy goes, what a thrower!
Let’s go old school with Unitas, Bart Starr, Bobby Lane and Norm Van Brocklin. Van Brocklin still holds the single game passing yardage record of 551 yards set in 1951 when he was with the Los Angeles Rams.
Old school should have Fran Tarkenton in there too. Not for the GOAT, but he held nearly every passing record for years until Merino started breaking them. YouTube his highlights and you’ll see what I mean. Incredible scrambler too.
I forgot about Fran, probably because he always found a way to beat the Rams in the playoffs when I was growing up. Great scrambler and very underrated in my opinion.
True. Trakenton, all of 6 foot, 190 on a good day, could scramble backward before throwing a long TD or completion better than any QB I ever saw. Someone even wrote a book about him called Better Scramble than Lose. The guy played for 18 years and threw for 342 TDs, but never won a Super Bowl. An amazing motivational figure who became a very successful businessman as an innovative computer software guru. Minnesota seemed to ruin more Ram seasons than any team I can remember, but Tarkenton’s record against L.A. was in reality 9-9-2. The Cowboys and the Colts… Read more »
When I was growing up, Johnny U was the absolute man for the Colts, as well as the NFL. Nobody could throw it better, and his high-top black shoes were a trademark if I remember correctly, as well as his somewhat stiff, over-the-top style.
I remember the high-top black shoes. I had a pair of Dick Vitale, black high-top tennis shoes when I was a kid. I think they were manufactured by Converse. Hard to believe Vitale is still around as a college basketball analyst. He’s even more annoying than Bill Walton!
Just imagine Vitale and Walton together announcing a Trojan game together. A Domer and a Bruin squawking (Vitale would be semi-screaming) every second of the contest. That might be a game I would have to mute entirely, though I expect they’d make the most exuberant, enthusiastic broadcast duo in the history of college BB.
Good one Allen!
Colin Mobley Decides to Stay Erik MKcKinney (on3.com) — USC DL Colin Mobley (2021 3-star; 6-4, 290; Hyattsville Dematha Catholic) has withdrawn his name from the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz. Mobley, who did not get on the field last fall under the new USC coaching staff, entered the Portal on Dec. 20, becoming the eighth Trojan to do so this offseason. This move likely locks Mobley onto the USC roster for at least spring ball. The Transfer Portal window is now closed and won’t reopen until May 1. Fellow DL Kobe Pepe remains in the Portal. Both he and Mobley… Read more »
I thought when players entered the portal they gave up their scholarship?
Kids can just have their name withdrawn from their portal?
Are schools obligated to take them back? Or was it SC’s choice to save his ride? thanks. sc
I’ve always thought kids could pull back their Portal status anytime, and if their school wants them to remain on the roster, it’s all good. But if the school doesn’t want them, it’s adios because their ride doesn’t have to be honored once they enter the Portal.
It’s fairly rare in high-level CFB. Per NCAA data, only 5% of FBS athletes who entered the TP in 2020 or 2021 later withdrew and are assumed to be back at their original school.
My guess, and it is only a guess, is Mobley and Pepe were asked to leave AND neither has gotten any quality offers. Assuming I am correct, Mobley just decided to try to impress the coaches in the Spring. Absent his showing a ton of improvement, my guess is he will be back in the portal in May. Pepe clearly continues to shop. Maybe he can join Sam Huard at Cal Poly SLO?
Hah. At least Sam will be playing, which is more than we can say for a lot of bench sitters who will never see the light of game day unless someone much better gets hurt.

USC is in the NCAA Tournament, avoids the First Four in latest ESPN bracketology
Donovan James (Yahoo Sports) — This is how great a difference two high-quality wins can make. The USC Trojans were projected to go to the NIT two weeks ago by bracketologists. USC simply didn’t have enough meat on the bone. Its profile was noticeably thin. It needed high-profile, big-leverage victories to change its NCAA Tournament calculus.
USC crushed Arizona State in Tempe.
The Trojans hammered UCLA with a big second half.
Everything is different now.
Boogie pleads his case

Just read an article that the 5 star QB Sam Huard from UW has transferred to Cal Poly SLO. Just checked, Cal Poly SLO is D2 in football. That is quite a fall for a QB – to leave a D1 Power 5 and transfer to D2. The only reason I can think of is that he had no other offers at the D1 level for a program where he would start and be able to develop. After the Max Browne event with SC, I wonder if 5 star QB rating in Washington are realistic.
Huard (son of Damon, nephew of Brock) is following Sheldon Cross, his highly successful HS coach at Kennedy Catholic, who has just been hired by Cal Poly HC Paul Wulff as their new OC.
Allen, I think it proves my point. If Sam could have started (or legitimately have competed to start) at a legitimate Power 5 school (like ND or PItt), he would not be transferring to a D2 school to follow his HS coach. The kid simply lacks the ability to play at that level. He is clearly going to be more comfortable dominating D2 level talent and coaching. I do not blame him for doing so as I assume his family is very much aware of his talent level (hard to have had your entire male lineage start and star as… Read more »
Depth chart refugee Sam Huard wisely chose to leave UW where he isn’t suited for Kalen DeBoer’s system and they have bonafide Heisman candidate Michael Penix Jr taking every snap next season. But I like Sam’s next move more than you RJJ. Sam can start right away at Cal Poly (2-9 last season) under a friendly OC who will give him the best chance to play every single second in 2023. Since immediate playing time is obviously Huard’s priority, I don’t see Miller Moss being comparable. If Moss were that concerned about playing immediately, he wouldn’t be staying at USC,… Read more »

Hoping he chooses SC. We need as much talent on defense as we can get.
Four-star WR Ja’Kobi Lane expected to sign with USC Blair Angulo (247Sports) — After holding off on signing early, Ja’Kobi Lane appears ready to officially come off the board Wednesday. Sounds like Duce may not commit Wednesday. He may delay to see where he is at with baseball. Kind of vague why, but you would think if he was really big on GA he would have committed or kept it on schedule. Perhaps USC has a shot, who knows.
Over the weekend I spent too much time trying to figure out what the difference between Butch, the 50s style USC mascot and Sparty (also known as Butch) the Michigan State mascot was. It seems nothing except color is the co answer. It seems the mascot I grew up with was the brainchild of a Disney artist who designed several logos in the 50s. Arthur Evens used similar drawings for schools across the country Ucla and Baylor and three other schools shared a bear wearing a sailor cap. I found an article saying a student at Michigan State copyrighted Sparty… Read more »
What is undergrad tuition for 4 years? Some of the kids on scholies were brought in during the helton debacle and many errors were made in recruit evaluations. It would be classy if the university did guarantee 4 years of tuition even if they stopped playing football. With Riley and Company, there will be fewer scholarships offered to “mistakes” of player evaluations. Plus, SC gets to keep its B1G money–we’re not ucla, Cal Berkely’s bitch. The Bruins have to spread their money around like a hippie commune.🤔😆
It’s incredible that permanently downtrodden CAL, with one of the country’s worst CFB traditions, was able to suck UCLA dry in exchange for “allowing” UCLA to leave for greener monetary pastures. Bruin athletics lost $28+ mil in 2022, and $62.5 mil in 2021. Now they share a lot more than the fight song.
Welcome to the world of politics, where nothing but raw political power matters. The Cal Administration had a direct line to Gavin Newsome and he was glad to oblige, even though he went to Santa Clara rather then Berkeley. In fact, I doubt Gavin could have gotten into Berkeley.
Somewhere else in the blogosphere I made the claim that Ucla band students don’t actually play their instruments. The money they’re required to pay Cal is royalties for playing recorded Cal band music while they march holding their instruments up.
Tuition is about $63,000 a year; with cost of attendance realistically about $90,000 a year. If you add the perks for football players (all meals, etc.), the cost is in excess of $100,000 per year.
90K a year? wow, just freaking wow. I had no idea it had gotten this out of control. sc
If we cut 10 players, yeah, it’s a million. Those are Helton mistakes. But with Riley, we will never make that many mistakes again with player recruitment. If a kid transfers, we owe him nothing. More likely a kid transfers for more PT than one who retires and gets his USC education.
Law School is even more – cost of attendance is about $100K per year. Medical school is even more. It is insane. About the same at every major private university. My doc has kid at Notre Dame. Cost out the door is $82,500 per year.
I will say that the Portal has changed the way in which recruiting is now done. SC will probably have 95 scholarships or so as of this Wednesday, making SC 10 over the 85 limit. SC is far from unique. I think Oregon is 15 scholarships over the limit. My guess is most major programs are. Thus, we are going to see a lot more spring competition and we will see “cuts”. I know SC gives 4 year ‘guarantees’. Does that mean the kids “cut” will still have a non-football scholarship to SC if they do not want to transfer.… Read more »
Can someone tell me why the top NIL players on a team need a scholarship? Caleb doesn’t need it. The cost of tuition could be rolled into the NIL deals.
I don’t know the answer to your question. So I’ll guess. Since only 85 football players can be on scholarship, I presume NIL money cannot be used to help pay tuition for anyone who is not on scholarship. Caleb’s NIL money is for him personally, over and above his scholarship. Top NIL players like Caleb aren’t about to use their NIL money to pay tuition, which they consider a gift just for signing up. NIL is pure profit for players, and doesn’t come from the school. So why would any players give it back to the school as any type… Read more »
Thinking from the player’s stand point, if he gives up his scholarship, that frees one up for someone else and gives your team more depth. If he doesn’t care about winning then the NIL is his to keep along with the scholie. If he wants to win a NC he wants the best team around him. Now if it is considered a kickback to return it is another thing. Knowing the NCAA they may not have a clue.
If Caleb gives up his scholarship because he’s already rich, is he supposed to play for USC as a walk-on, paying for his tuition with NIL money? I don’t think so. Otherwise, you could have 85 on scholarship and another 20 or so 4/5-star “walk-ons” who are using their NIL money to pay for classes.
I have no idea what the answer is. But, if this is allowed, schools that have low tuition like OK or AR or OK State (tuition is about $9K per year and cost of attendance is about 25K per year) will have a significant advantage. UT could well have the entire two deep paid for by NILs.
Crystal Ball for 2023 5-star Phoenix Pinnacle TE Duce Robinson (6-6, 225; great baseball prospect as a RFer too) — 100% GA
Robinson was seemingly a USC “lock” months ago. Signing Day is Wednesday.

It will be interesting. If he can play baseball at the same level he does football, why would be play football? Baseball pays better and you have a much longer career.
Guess he prefers the SEC over the Big 10 and his family traveling further to see his games unless Georgia will be paying for that too? The #1 program ain’t bad though.
Hope he gets home sick, really home sick. Georgia isn’t anything like the West.
Robinson likes the Bulldog culture and how they use their TEs DawgNation.com — “Georgia tight ends coach Todd Hartley is a tireless recruiter. Boogie is sure a microwave type of player.
And he is learning the PG position. Along with Drew the playmaking is ok.
The big factor is Vince coming around and recovering.
He will have to continue to be monitored.
Good thing is USC medical is among the best.
I’ve been behind the times and had never heard of a basketball player referred to as one of a “microwave” variety. Good word usage I say, for that all-important “shotmaker” every team desperately needs!
As used elsewhere — “So-and-so (usually someone off the bench) is a microwave-type scorer who will knock down a few huge shots to change momentum in only a handful of minutes…”
