USC can’t keep up with Washington in scoring extravanganza, ruining its Pac-12 title hopes
The Trojans wasted another fantastic performance from their star quarterback in a shootout
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — All they needed was one little spark, Lincoln Riley assured his USC Trojans, one measly twist of fate from the football gods for their fortunes to finally turn. That was the message all week — all month, really — with USC still tiptoeing along the precipice of its season.
What No. 20 USC (7-3, 5-2) got instead against No. 5 Washington (9-0, 6-0 Pac-12) was a whirling inferno, with enough twists and turns to leave the sold-out Coliseum crowd’s heads spinning. Thrust into an extravaganza of explosive plays, on a night when defense was largely optional, the Trojans caught fire but were left smoldering in a 52-42 loss, their Pac-12 title hopes largely reduced to ash.
It wasn’t for a lack of effort from its offense. The Trojans piled up 515 yards, an average of 8.2 per play. They rushed for 203 yards, just short of a season-high, despite not having their lead back, MarShawn Lloyd, due to injury. Caleb Williams, the Trojans star quarterback, had his best game in over a month, accounting for four touchdowns and completing 77% of his passes. One after another, USC piled up big plays — 17 in all, a total that probably would’ve blown the doors off most other teams across college football.

But once again, it wasn’t enough. Not with its defense once again incapable of making stops when it needed them. Or making stops at all.
Because superhuman has never been quite enough, not to lift this deeply flawed program with all its fight and hunger past the failings of a defense that got shredded to bits yet again by the Huskies. When Williams crumpled in the fourth quarter on a third-down sack, down three and an attempt to match Washington unsuccessful, the night was already over, because any semblance of trust in a USC defense to get a stop had been carved to shreds.
Washington entered Saturday with one of the best offenses in college football. But even that resume couldn’t explain how unstoppable the Huskies proved in dismantling the Trojans’ flailing, impossibly bad defense.
“We didn’t play very well tonight,” Riley said. “Some of our worst ball was on some of our biggest plays of the game.”
Washington put up 572 yards, the most allowed at USC since Riley became coach. After a week spent harping on the importance of stopping explosive plays, the Huskies still managed 18 of them against USC. Running back Dillon Johnson steamrolled the Trojans for 256 yards and four touchdowns, more yards than any other team rushed for against USC this season. Johnson had never rushed for more than 100 yards in a game, but managed 199 rushing yards before contact on Saturday.

“All of our big runs, either someone is not in their gap, or someone isn’t lined up,” safety Calen Bullock said.
Even Johnson said after that he was “shocked.”
“Kind of looked like guys weren’t ready to make the play,” added linebacker Mason Cobb.
And yet, USC still had a chance, with half the fourth quarter remaining and the ball in Williams’ capable hands.
The Trojans’ defense managed a rare stop, forcing Washington to settle for a field goal, and USC drove into Husky territory down three with a chance to seize the lead.
That’s when Williams found Tahj Washington in the flat. Washington dodged one Husky defender, then another, following blocks into the end zone for what appeared to be the go-ahead score. But a holding penalty erased the touchdown.
“That was probably the game,” Riley said.
Still within field-goal range, Williams dropped back on third down under immediate duress. He tried to step up in the pocket, but it was no use. He was sacked for a 12-yard loss, the significance of which seemed to hit Williams as he lay in the grass an extra few seconds, staring up at the night sky.

Any lingering hope left in the Coliseum dissipated with the sack. Washington then drove 91 yards in nine plays to score.
Misery persisted as Williams wandered the field in the aftermath until he found his mother in the first row. The quarterback jumped into the stands and into her arms, crying as she covered his face with a piece of paper.
“I want to go home and cuddle with my dog and watch some shows,” Williams said during the USC postgame news conference, the emotion still raw.
From the start, Saturday night seemed primed to be a heavyweight affair, as two of the nation’s top-five offenses traded punches from the start, while their respective defenses braced for the inevitable impact.
The real bedlam began, rather uncharacteristically, with consecutive stops — the only two punts for either team of the first half. A devastating drop by freshman wideout Duce Robinson that would’ve otherwise scored stopped USC’s second drive dead. Washington responded with its own three-and-out.
But as the Huskies tried to punt, Robinson burst through the line in a blazing bit of redemption, overwhelming the punter. The block gave USC the ball back at the eight-yard line, and Williams ran in his 10th touchdown of the season just two plays later.
On any normal night, maybe that would’ve been a turning point. On this particularly dizzying Saturday night, it was just the first of several.
There was the stunning touchdown pass that Huskies star Michael Penix Jr. laced on the run into triple coverage, part of his 256-yard, two-touchdown night. Or the nifty, 41-yard flea flicker from Williams. Or the 11 runs of 10-plus yards from USC’s trio of backs. Amid Saturday’s scoring frenzy, though, all ended up merely footnotes.
The more consequential moment came just before the half, as Williams attempted to scramble and Washington linebacker Zion Tupuola-Fetui swatted the ball out of his extended arm for a fumble. The Huskies recovered and needed just three plays to score, taking a lead into halftime.
Still, the door remained open until the final minutes. And after the loss, Riley once again extolled just how close his Trojans came to a win.
But the image that would be remembered in the aftermath came from Williams in his mother’s arms, the Trojans’ star quarterback grappling with the same realization that everyone else had Saturday night.
Any hopes of a spark igniting USC’s championship season were extinguished Saturday, stomped out once again by its sieve-like defense.

LR did not simply fail; he crashed and burned, and has two games left to go! In 2023, Grinch put on the field the worst D is SC history; and that is saying a lot. Grinch put on the 2nd worst in the last eight games of 2022. Do you know the SC D has given up more points this year that Ohio State, MI and Penn State COMBINED! LR presided over this disaster and enabled it. Now, LR has to “circle the wagons” and face the first failure in his career (and it is about to get a lot… Read more »
I would only point out that John McKay had already won the ’62 National Championship with undefeated USC before losing to ND 51-0 on Nov. 26, 1966.
That’s a huge difference-making factor. Recently weakened Lincoln has a long, long way to go before he deserves to be even mentioned in the same sentence as McKay, the best coach USC ever had.
But that ‘62 Championship was after three bad years and McKay’s job was on the line that year.
Then came OJ
McKay won his first of four NCs in only his 3rd season.
True, but he was under pressure for poor seasons until the 1st championship year.
Look, McKay was great. He developed great players and was very successful. It would be fortunate to get another McKay-like coach, but McKay, like all young coaches struggled for a couple + years before he got it to work out. SC cannot wait for LR to work it out, he has the luxury of stepping into a heritage program, as opposed to McKay who built the heritage.
McKay said that he was faster than some of USC’s wide receivers when he arrived, and I’m not sure if he was joking. He went on a massive USC talent recruiting binge and wins a NC in year three, the same year I became a Trojan fan. I’ll never forget that scary 42-37 WIS Rose Bowl win in the semi-darkness, plopped in front of my parents’ friends TV on New Year’s Day. This was the first #1 versus #2 match-up in a bowl game, ever. #2 WIS was favored by two. A Trojan fan was born. Names like Willie Brown,… Read more »
Anyone ecstatic to see Joe Biden become President is automatically disqualified from having an opinion anyone should take seriously.
Runaway inflation, wars everywhere, open borders, crime going through the roof, terrible energy policy. Is that what you signed up for?
And really, you think SC has a chance to get the PAC 12 CC Game? C’mon man!
While I never want to see a person lose their job (of course I was ecstatic when Biden beat Trump in 2020), it was such a relief to hear that Grinch was fired. This should have happened last year after the Cotton Bowl but I understand giving Grinch a chance to work his system with better athletes than we had in 2022 and realizing Helton had done such a poor recruiting job on the defensive side of ball. It is good to see Riley stepped up and made the change. We still have a chance to salvage this season and… Read more »
it will be better in November 2024 when the Biden Crime Family is gone
NY Giants Daniel Jones possible/probable Torn ACL ……. Next UP for Giants at QB ? Signed about 10 days ago …..Matt Barkley .
Excited Matt is still hanging around in the NFL. He’s made a good living from being a backup QB.
and he’s healthy at this stage of his career
Still accepting how this season was thrown away just to keep a friend employed, but relieved that potentially help is on the way.
Jon Wilner: Congrats to Washington for scoring 3 more points on USC’s defense than Cal did.
I will give LR credit for being loyal to Grinch. Tough to fire a long time colleague and friend. To fire him at this point I would think Cohen was getting too much heat from the Collectives, recruiting was suffering. I would also think Cohen had already been putting out calls to coaches agents and may already have a candidate before today’s announcement. In Grinch’s defense (no pun intended) the theory was if he had a little more talent and another season the defense would be passable enough to make a good run. Failure. Grinch has been a dead man… Read more »
That blind loyalty cost LR his coaching rep … he better hit a home run this DC hire because the his career went backwards this season
True. LR sold out USC for his crappy DC friend who hasn’t a clue.
Now LR’s just another college coach without near the regard he used to have, at least as a HC.
Hope it was worth it LR. It’ll be interesting to see what USC is like in 2024 without a miraculous Heisman QB to prop you up.
2x
It certainly has shown where his loyalties were at, saving Grinch was ahead of doing what he was hired to do.
I’ve not much faith in Riley developing a Championship quality team at USC, now or ever.
I definitely now have my doubts about Riley as you do. He really opened a big can of worms on himself with this season. He doesn’t seem much like a NC coach to me either.
This huge DC hire will tell us a lot, as well as the other coaching replacements this staff needs to absorb, especially if necessary to make the new DC somewhat autonomous and happy.
We’ll see if Riley’s continued stubbornness overshadows what needs to be done. Or maybe he just lacks insight, which might be even worse.
I totally agree. Your comment that LR’s reputation as a HC took a huge hit because of this was right on the money. Arledge made the same point in his article on Grinch. LR lost all the good will and trust he had built up last year. LR had the world by the tail last year; all he had to do was fire Grinch and replace him with a competent DC. Instead, he got the Grinch narrative, which he totally butchered in handling, LR first ignored the problem; then told us that we were not “experts”, and then told us… Read more »
It’s amazing how many mistakes Lincoln started making this year, and I’m just talking about his talking points.
Sometimes when I listen to him before, during (running around losing his head with the refs), and after games, I just have to shake my head. But that’s all fairly meaningless compared to how this sometimes helpless USC team looks on the field.
But LR’s in a real crucible now, surrounded by trouble. Hopefully, he keeps his cool, has a better plan going forward, and holds the team together through these next two games — and beats UCLA. That’s step one.
LR has NEVER been where he is now! He has the first failure of his career and, if I am correct, he is about to get the worst defeat of his career. Let’s see how he reacts to it. I think SC loses to OR by at least 21, maybe as much as 35.
Lancelot Linc may be a good play designer, but he is a poor head coach. These young men need coaching, they need discipline, they need to practice basics. All Linc seems to be focused on is WR routes, the O line is maybe an after thought, and the D receives no thought at all.
LR is paid some $10mm a year to make the tough decisions and produce results.
I don’t. He should have been fired after the embarrassing bowl loss last year. He is paid far too much to be loyal to a friend.
I wonder if LR would even be in high demand as a HC now if he were on the market?
All he did this season so far was prove he’s not ready to play against and successfully challenge the better programs in the country.
Yahoo Sports saying Grinch has been dismissed?
I take no joy in being right When LR kept Grinch I was convinced it was a huge error. And, at the time, I gave Grinch a 50-50 chance of getting canned in season. I am convinced that if Jen Cohen is half as good as she is reported to be, the major changes that LR needs to make at year’s end have already been identified and fixes are in process. Grinch had to go and best to remove that distraction ASAP. We should thank UW for destroying the SC D and putting up the most yards ever on a… Read more »
A day late and one stop short but just imagine the hype for next year. I can see Walmart putting SC decorations before Valentine’s Day
Screw hype !
Ok. Let’s be frustrated but fair. Yes of course he should have dumped Grinch after Tulane, I’d agree even before, but he did. Held his nose, but did. I for one admit I didn’t think he’d do it. So let’s at least give LR a little credit ( I know I’m gonna get blasted for that and may deserve it) because this is something I don’t think he’s done it before. Let’s hope the new DC brings a robust staff ( if LR allows it) that can change our program.
Fanatic, My guess is the details for bringing in a new D staff are already in place. To speculate further, budget has already been allocated to completely replace the D staff and a list of potential DC candidates already prepared. Ditto for the S&C coach. Agents should be contacted starting this week. I sure hope Jen Cohen can convince LR to hire a special teams coach. It is a shame to waste a talent the level of Zechariah Branch.
Good point on STs. While we’re retooling, don’t just stop with defense (any good DC is not going to want work with an incumbent staff, but rather build/bring his own).
I was wondering, how did they block that punt without a ST coach.😉 Just kidding.
I actually think Udub didn’t block 19/88, That’s why he was able to smother the punt
Please be right. Please. Let’s go Jen. Earn your keep.
Give LR credit? What? He defended Grinch to the end, he insulted many alumni by referring to a “trained eye.” This despite many alumni played the game, some even have more years in than LR! Then were were “close” just needed to “clean up” some. Then it was we were really close, just a “spark” away. Then, I just loved his comment of not letting “outsiders set the expectations.” I have news for you Riley, the expectations were set and achieved by PC, McKay, JRob, Howard Jones, the Alumni, the students, the fans. If you can’t handle it, please go… Read more »
I can say I agree with you on all counts. My posts are in alignment with yours. I guess I’m just in awe that he actually did it, Knowing his unbalanced approach.
Grinch just got fired!
Even people here in NY Metro area ALLREADY saying “Did SC (in any way) waste some of Caleb’s last season at SC ?”
Alright time for Jen Cohen to earn her pay. Get the best guy out there and announce him asap. December 1st would not be too soon.
I m hoping they at least kick the tires on Texas DC Pete Kwiatkowski .
Grab Gary Patterson instead … or Bret from OregonSt
Brey
Also their analyst, Gary Patterson, the longtime successful head coach at TCU.
Did the press constantly pressing LR about his DC get this done or (hopefully) did LR look in the mirror and say to himself>>>”This AIN’T gonna work ….Got NO CHOICE he’s GOTTA go ! “
Grinch was canned after Utah … just were waiting for next big loss. Surprised didn’t let him take the fall vs Oregon but whatever Good riddance
Now let’s get a good DC
Grinch gone way too late. Nua will be better simply by doing nothing. Just play a base high school defense (3-4 or 4-3) and let guys go make plays.
Absolutely, whatever they were doing was way too complicated, taught poorly, and
/or communicated poorly during games. They will need to simplify but still have to game plan for Oregon. Nix will pick them apart if too simple.
It’s official Grinch canned !
Plaschke: Grinched again! In keeping embattled defensive coordinator, USC lost its season Bill Plaschke (LAT) — USC’s defense ranked No. 111 nationally before this game and proceeded to play like it should, in fact, be dead last. “Just pissed,” said Lincoln Riley. “Pissed that we missed this opportunity.” Riley should be mostly pissed at himself, because Riley did this. He did this when he didn’t fire Grinch after last season’s late collapse. He did this when he didn’t fire Grinch after this season’s early struggles. Grinch will surely be replaced now, either immediately or after the season, but it’s too… Read more »
I think we can all agree that Grinch was horrible at his job, and we are glad this part of the nightmare is over. Hopefully most will agree that Bill Plaschke is a complete BUFFOON, who will do anything for clicks.
This isn’t as liberating as when Helton got kicked to the curb, but it still feels good.

Surprising with finally knocked us out. Was losing to a top-five team in a close game.
Silver Lining for Caleb
With all this losing at USC lately, Caleb’s just getting a proper feel for what it’s gonna be like playing in the NFL for a crap team that doesn’t have a surrounding cast, or probably the coaching as well, to let him really show his magical abilities.
What a waste of such a fantastic QB’s talents on a team that just can’t play any D.
This is easily one of the strangest Trojan teams I have ever followed.
I feel for him. He plays his heart out every play. I hope he can get on a good team in the NFL that can get him to a Super Bowl sometime in his career.
General question for the group. Does any other college or NFL defense need the players to carry a play sheet? I’ve never seen a defense where nearly every play at least one guy doesn’t know what to do. Even Bear was looking to the sideline when the ball was snapped and got dumped on his butt!
Every defensive play guys were scrambling reading their wrist and finding their spot.
Coaches Poll top 25
Others receiving votes: Air Force (78); Iowa (57); USC (56); Kansas State (52); Liberty (50); Duke (24); UCLA (22); SMU (20); UNLV (10); Toledo (8); NC State (4); Kentucky (4); Troy (2); West Virginia (1)
Who are these clowns voting for ucla, who lost to AZ 27-10 late last night? Must’ve voted before that game ended.
And a suggestion to ALL USC fans …..DON’T MISS the USC VS UCLA game .WHY ? ….. Might be the last game Caleb ever plays in a USC Uniform <<<<<Just Saying !
Why would he ever consider coming back? He has an offense of line that does their best to get them injured every single play in a defensive can’t wait to give away his points
One wonders if Caleb will even decide to play in whatever bowl game USC gets into?
Hopefully, Caleb doesn’t get hurt against ORE or UCLA, because he’s always at risk on this USC team.
As long as he is healthy for the UCLA game Allen . It bothers me FOR DAYS when we lose to UCLA …..FIGHT ON !!!!!
It bothers me we heard LR’s first press conferences when he got hired talk about the importance of good defense in winning championships and see what has happened instead.
Ya, Lincoln probably shouldn’t even be allowed to say the word “defense”.
He has no credibility on that side of the ball whatsoever.
Days? More like weeks, months and sometimes years (13-9…agh!)
I doubt he would play in a meaningless bowl game. Let Moss have at it and try to regroup for next year. In the B1G. Where they play defense. Oh, my, what is in our future?
I wouldn’t blame Caleb if he sits out any bowl game. He’s got so much to lose if he gets hurt.
But he’s such a competitor that I could see him playing in any bowl just to get one last shot at a victory with USC.
Is anybody even convinced we could win whatever sad bowl game we get invited to?
That is why I am suggesting it …… I do not expect him back next year .
At this stage, Lincoln Riley is nowhere remotely close to ever winning a NC at USC.
“Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda” defines his pressers nowadays.
Gotta hope we can somehow beat mediocre UCLA at the Coliseum, Caleb’s final game at home. Should be a great match-up after whatever happens to USC in Eugene.
Riley has to spend the next two years recruiting and developing HS recruits. It has to be done this way or he will never play for any championships, conference or playoff. I think based on observing how the top programs in CFB are doing it, there is no shortcut to be had. And find new coaches that can teach sound blocking & tackling!
You have about a month until the early recruitment sign up day comes. Get going!
Yes, but Riley is not a great HS recruiter. What has happened to SC’s MD and Bosco connections?
They go to the good teams that are going to develop them
$$$
Zero chance anybody is gonna get fired till AFTER the UCLA game (and maybe not until after whatever Bowl game we play in). All we can do for now is watch the remaining games …Root like heck . This is just me but I ….for now …..am NOT thinking too much about the changes/firings because they probably will happen just not in the immediate future . And when the changes happen if it is this week or 3-4 weeks from now I do not see that making that much of a difference …..Fight On !!!!!
https://youtu.be/88xeGMSMBkE
He to me sure sounds like he is holding back, just trying to get through the presser and move on, get the season over. Same platitudes. Just getting it over with. Is this how he really feels is my question. I don’t think he will ever pointedly blame his friend for the USC failure this season. Lets move on to next year somehow. With a different defensive staff.
Are used to appreciate his press conferences, because he actually talked. Now he just sounds more and more like Helton every press conference. It keeps talking about how close we are. Maybe he needs to ask him self why were always just close
Yes, and he is being paid some $10mm a year to sound like Helton. I hope Jen Cohen cleans house and starts anew as Riley isn’t a HC.
I have to admit, while I still want Riley to be USC’s coach, I wouldn’t be devastated if he suddenly moved on. He’s got huge holes in his approach to championship football. Just firing Grinch isn’t gonna solve what ails USC. Riley did a lot for USC in a very short period of time, and getting him here to replace Clay Helton was worth every penny IMO. But Riley has a much lower ceiling at USC than I ever thought just a couple of months ago. If you were a great Portal or prep defensive prospect, why would you ever… Read more »
Another worry is any defensive player we currently have is probably considering the portal
Question is, how well is Riley going to get along with a strong willed competent, successful DC ? A defensive rebuild is in order, DLine, Linebackers, Corners and safetys, its maddening just watching the defensive errors.
Oregon hired a defensive minded coach Lanning and he has kept Oregon very competitive, on our end Riley
is so focused on his scheme’ and QB, i don’t think he really knows what the rest of the team is doing, seems he takes what the Yes men tell him. Another year might tell us who Lincoln Riley really is.
All Excuses, Riley needs to awaken to the fact, when you are paid the kind of money he receives….Success is not only expected but demanded by those who write the checks. I believe if he has a season like this in SC’s first year in the B1G, he’s gone.
All you have to say is 199 yards rushing before contact.
Two posts in the same hour who knew? I have read a couple of articles about the Washington quarterback being the star of the game and I want to call BS on that notion. He was merely better protected and not much more than a housewife turning on a rumba against our defense. I didn’t see any razzle or dazzle from him at all. I saw our hapless defense flailing away as they overran him or reached him but forgot what to do. Caleb Williams was the better quarterback by far. He extended plays and made plays, while making the… Read more »
Caleb was by far the best QB in the game and it showed his athletic talents that very few can possess. Anyone saying anything different is a homer of the highest regard.
He had to be on his game to keep the team in the game or it would have been an early runaway.
Huh? Who won the game?
Was that on Caleb or was it on the defense? What did Penix do that outshined what Caleb did. Caleb carried USC, Penix handed the ball off basically.
Look at the stats…..
I did. Caleb won most all the stats.
There’s a half dozen active blogs on the USC situation, including Reddit with several sub blogs, indicating that when Grinch is gone, or he’s on borrowed time, just a matter of time, or potential names of the new DC. Knowing LR by now, do you really think he’s gonna pull the cord on Grinch? This defensive clown show has been tolerated for 6+ years. Wave in an analyst. That’ll fix it.
It is going to take more than an analyst to fix what is badly broken. It will take a real good DC and it is going to take time for a new system and bodies to come together into a decent unit.
Absolutely. They will not be able to recruit if Grinch is in the same zip code as SC. There needs to be a complete overhaul. I would question Riley in the role of HC given his inability to win a NC and his inaction regarding the defense. Keep him as OC. Then there is his $10mm or so annual salary and he can’t even win the Conference with a Heisman QB! Yikes!
You’re bringing up some glaring issues that no one wants to discuss or worse yet, even Consider !
Don’t forget a new strength and conditioning coach too. Our current one is trash.
Riley tried hard to build a team that could take the best QB USC or any other school has ever seen to the promised land. He used every trick he had to recruit out of the portal to try to get an immediate turn around. He knew this was the last chance and kept Grinch, giving him needed players and made Grinch promise a turn around on defense. All they needed was mediocre defense to get to the playoffs with the best offense in the country. It all fell apart as Grinch did not keep his end of the bargain.… Read more »
Who would have believed that this season would turn into mush for the same reason that led to USC holding onto Helton three extra years. Stupidity and pure ignorance. Swann ignored the torch carrying mob and extended Helton’s contract. (A fact that later caused his resignation) In the same spirit of infamy, Riley ignored the obvious and kept Grinch. Close he says? Close doesn’t even count in horseshoes if the other guy throws ringers. In football ten points is a season ending failure, which could lead to Riley’s resignation. I wouldn’t have to write these words if he had proven… Read more »
I really doubt Riley is going to resign, or be fired. Grinch and others yes. I only wish we knew just a little about what has been discussed privately amoung Riley and his staff. I cannot buy that Riley has ignored the defensive failures, nor do I believe Jen has ignored the defensive failures. We only know the front that Riley and USC has put up during this miserable period. Going into the B1G I am sure LR knows by now the expectations and needs required to play Big 10 football. The overnight build for Caleb is over, now to… Read more »
I agree. Public and private fronts are two very different beasts. I’d be shocked if he fires Grinch this week, and he’s not going to sit up there and say he’s going to fire Grinch in a couple weeks.
As I’ve said on this blog, this off-season will tell us everything we need to know about Riley and USC’s future with him. Mainly, what I am watching for is how he rebuilds his staff, and how he approaches recruiting. These are the two keys, IMO.
Are you shocked? I think everyone was.
Yes. Thought it would happen, but not until after ucla game.
Since Grinch hasn’t been let go yet, hoping for wind and rain in Eugene this Saturday night (LOL).
Let’s look on the bright side. SC plays Oregon, at Autzen, next week….
Hard to believe that Helton is gone.
Is he? I think he’s just become a defensive coordinator.
