Trojans Battle Their Way To Heartbreaking Loss

USC finds reason for encouragement after comeback falls short against No. 13 BYU

Trojans come back to take the lead in the fourth quarter before BYU recovers and makes a big stop on fourth down

Adam Grosbard (OC Register)  —  LOS ANGELES — With few exceptions, the story of the 2021 USC football season has been one of the Trojans being faced with adversity and fading away from the challenge. That’s what made USC’s 35-31 loss to No. 13 BYU so heart-wrenching for the team.

When BYU took a 15-point lead on the opening possession of the third quarter, USC responded with an 18-0 run, with quarterback Jaxson Dart finding Gary Bryant Jr. (1) on an inside slant for the go-ahead score and Lake McRee for the two-point conversion.

And it wasn’t enough.

When BYU retook the lead on a seven-yard run by Jackson McChesney with 3:57 to play, the Trojans marched back down the field and into the red zone. On fourth-and-six, Bryant ran the same route as on the go-ahead score and made the catch.

And it wasn’t enough, with Bryant being taken down a yard short of the marker with 38 seconds remaining, eliminating USC (4-7, 3-5 in Pac-12) from bowl eligibility with one game left to play.

“I’m happy at the way the guys fought,” Donte Williams said, dejection thick in the interim head coach’s voice. “I hurt for them tonight. Some losses, you don’t really hurt. Tonight, I wish I could have did maybe one thing more than what I did.”

A lot of breaks didn’t go USC’s way. There was a questionable pass interference call on Drake Jackson that erased a Chris Steele interception and allowed BYU (10-2) a 41-yard touchdown pass to Keanu Hill to open the second half, a 14-point swing in Williams’ estimation.

There was the BYU fumble on its go-ahead drive that was picked up by Cougar tight end Dallin Holker and returned an extra 22 yards.

But USC didn’t let those plays stop them from competing. It was the first close game the Trojans found themselves in all season, and the players felt a positive energy on the sideline, from the celebrations of big plays to Dart encouraging the defense ahead of drives.

There were the upperclassmen who set the example on senior day, like sixth-year running back Vavae Malepeai rushing for 99 yards and a touchdown in his last game at the Coliseum. And there were freshmen who grabbed the baton, like safety Calen Bullock and his end-zone interception in the fourth quarter as USC held onto its lead.

“We got a lot of younger guys that are stepping up,” Williams said. “The future is bright here.”

It wasn’t a perfect performance by any measure. Bryant returned the opening kickoff for 62 yards, but USC stalled in the red zone and settled for a field goal. USC only scored touchdowns on three of seven trips inside the BYU 20, while the Cougars went 3-for-3 in similar opportunities.

On one first-half drive, the USC defense hit dysfunctional bingo with a Steele pass interference, a big run off a misdirection, a big pass off broken coverage, an illegal substitution penalty on first-and-goal and two broken tackles on a TD run by Tyler Allgeier.

And then USC mirrored one of its critical mistakes from the Week 2 loss to Stanford, with an off-sides penalty on a made field goal tempting BYU to take three points off the board and allow Allgeier to rush into the end zone for six and an extra point.

But there were the signs of improvement, too, like how after allowing BYU to convert on six of its first nine third-down attempts, the USC defense held the Cougars to 1-for-5 the rest of the way.

“I think there was a sense of accountability to one another,” Figueroa said. “I don’t know if it was because it was senior night, but it just felt like the entire team was there to pick each other up when mistakes were made.”

Like when Dart avoided two potential safeties and turned a broken play into a 19-yard pass to McRee. Or when a bad snap came Dart’s way on the goal line and he picked it up, broke a tackle and ran it into the end zone to cut BYU’s second-half lead to one possession.

It wasn’t the type of football that USC has been accustomed to over the years. But after a 2021 in which the Trojans were more likely to fold than fight, there was a sense of encouragement.

“I’m super proud of our team. I thought we battled all game,” Dart said. “It just sucks to come up a little bit short.”

When do the SC players start hitting the portal? Right after the Cal game? As the season spiraled downward I am surprised we didn’t see any Trojans make the move. The next 2 months should be interesting.

Interesting how Riley mentioned “turning over the roster” in his press conference yesterday — a comment that seemed to make Bohn a little nervous. But let’s face it, a very different team will likely take the field next September. Too many players failed their auditions this season.

The Scoop is saying Riley is already working on staff, and Alex Grinch is his first pick to be DC. I read about Grinch and it seems he has made a big difference on the defense at OK. It follows he should be able to turn the USC defense around after teaching them to tackle some.

I was not too sure about this hire until I looked him up. He’s 55&10 which is better than most recent coaches at USC. About the lack of defense that’s a worry, but it’s also a staff thing. It’s no secret Todd Orlando was not USC ‘s first choice, in fact he was only available because he was fired. So if Riley can find the right coordinators we are looking much better. After watching last night and again today with my own replay ability I can say there’s something to build on. I agree with Grosbard the refs were out… Read more »

He will be paid so much more than anyone at the university, she had to be all in. I think she gave Bohn a timeline to get some things cleaned up beyond football, but let him do his thing with her support. I’ll take the last two years if we can get a great run with Riley.

He doesn’t owe me a drink for this, well, because he was correct right up until Saturday morning when Campbell called USC and said he was having second doubts about coming to USC. He asked for more time. Later in the day USC found out the Campbell was trying to renegotiate his contract with Iowa St. What he does owe me a drink for is not telling me about the contact with Lincoln Riley on Saturday night.

Just to be a little clearer; USC contacted several agents to gauge the interest of their clients early in the season. At that point in time Riley was not interested. He did not become interested until after the OK State loss and the press conference that followed. So Bohn can technically say the Riley was his target all season long but he did not actually negotiate any thing until Sunday morning.

This hire is exciting news, given that Riley has been to the playoffs 4 times and his teams generally look far better coached than we are used to. I am concerned that Riley is too offensively minded, and his defenses have looked really bad at times. The first team in the Pac12 that steps up and develops a dominant defensive philosophy is going to own the league for years. I am not sure Riley is the guy to do that. But at least I trust him to recruit an offense that can consistently put up points and not get owned… Read more »

I’m sorry to piss on everyone’s parade, but we have just committed to another coach who has to score 45 points in order to win. Defense wins championships.

It ain’t about defense so much anymore, it is about scoring lots of points. That is not my opinion, it is what I read more and more. I do agree that if USC can bring in a DC (Orgeron?) that is also world class we will tend to buck the Big12 trend of little to no defense. The whole idea behind bringing in Riley is that we now have hope. Something we didn’t have 24 hours ago.

Just the buzz and excitement of this kind of hire, with Alumni and recruits will reap immediate results. It gets all the national media talking. I wonder if he is keeping Donte for his west coast recruiting inroads, or does he already feel he has enough local high school relationships since he has pulled recruits from here in the last few years? My only hope is that he can have better defenses than he had at OK. Don’t want to have to win shootouts all the time. First task is to go after the best DC possible. A real physical… Read more »

Interesting. Thanks for that. Would not be surprised at all if it’s permanent. Especially if the taste of coaching there again gets his competitive juices flowing. What I watched last night was amazing. We had the old USC team come out and as usual failed to score a TD after a good drive and settled for a field goal. After that they tended to fail on most drives, until all of a sudden Harrell pulled a run game out of his hat. What they finally did was give up the inside and went wide with power, which at times before seemed to work. Even the defense came to life and made tackles and stops when they were needed. I couldn’t believe my eyes. A sad loss… Read more »

I don’t think I would want to play poker with Bohn, how they kept this deal quiet is amazing. This is the world class hire we were looking for, beyond the Fickells and Campbells. What is funny is Riley could keep Harrell as OC, teach him and mature him.

What kind of staff can Riley bring in? Will he bring some of his current staff with him? We know he has a prolific offense. Will he bring in defensive coaches who are physical minded proponents? There’s still time to turn a few heads in recruiting. Dart has got to be foaming at the mouth in anticipation. Again, what is going to happen on the defensive side?

I am stunned and excited. I might actually buy season tickets again and fly out from TX for home games (I did that for the first two years after I moved out). Riley must have figured out that competing for NCs in the SEC is going to very difficult and getting to the CFP from the Pac is a walk in the park compared.

Yes, and not only the playoffs, he would have to kiss the rings of Nick every year, and compete with SEC coaches in and out of Calif. Now he has keys to West coast being handed to him. With NIL in play, the LA/west coast media at his age he can write his own Series/Movie. ( Think the other PAC programs will have to contribute to his salary) Joking of course, yet PAC 12 stock just took a huge jump

SC may or may not have Campbell in the bag but if he isn’t hired a sizable portion of the fan base is going to fell that SC screwed up the hire. and their angst will probably be based on a rumor that had no basis in reality.

Has anyone insight into the financial ‘willingness’ of USC to compete and pay for the ‘great’ hire we are all waiting for? Including satisfying that coach with the resources to bring in a playoff level staff. We know the ‘cost of living, logistical problems faced living in LA. Is the crazy money truly there to spend?

That is a very good question and one that should be explored. Many, even Alumni think or feel that USC should have barrels of cash to spend and one the reasons is, it’s endowments. Endowments are a donation and stipulate where within the University it can be spent, also that the principal is invested to provide adequate ROI to perpetuate the endowment by a Board, not necessarily the University’s. Athletics in university is felt to be self supporting. So, the department has adequate funds for a ‘World Class Coach’ or it has to search the general fund or find a… Read more »

‘Post pandemic’ (See Cal game), the landscape of college football is extremely fluid, changing. What is the USC brand worth today(2021)?
With NIL now on board and finding its way to many. What does it mean to a coaches decision? Schools? One would think numbers have been s-crunched, debated, what would spending 18-22 mil a season for a coach’s staff the return Could Be. Not to mention the good investment already made to support staff

The Cal/USC game is the first “bowl” game of the season. The outcome determines only which team goes 4-8 and which team goes 5-7. It will have no outcome on the standing in the conference. This is a fitting end to the Helton era at SC. The team plays in the “Honey Dipper” Bowl. What a shame for these kids. What this game showed is the team was not a bad at it played most of the season.
