Patchwork Recipe Works For Trojans

Pac-12 refs admitted ‘they messed it up.’ Takeaways from USC’s win at Arizona

Jordan Addison, USC’s top receiver, stood on the Arizona Stadium sideline in street clothes. Close by, the receiver expected to seamlessly step into his place, Mario Williams, would never step on the field. He wore pads and a uniform, but wound up a surprise late scratch due to a pre-game injury tweak.

Their absences left the Trojans without any obvious answers at wideout, where their top two targets had accounted for 42.5% of the team’s receptions. But in their stead, what might’ve been a nightmare scenario ended in a Caleb Williams career-best passing night (5 TDs, 411 yds) as USC beat Arizona 45-37.

Kyle Ford set his mind on a breakout before he knew Addison and Williams would be out of the lineup. Two weeks ago, soon after USC suffered its first loss of the season at Utah, Ford called Caleb Williams and told the quarterback he was going to make an impact.

“He said no more,” Williams said. “He wants to be on the field. He wants to make those catches for me, and he got his opportunity.

Ford made the most of it Saturday, catching six passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. After a long road back from two ACL tears, Ford described his performance as “a big happy feeling for me.”

“It’s a lot of work put in, a lot of ups and downs of what I’ve been through,” Ford said, “but at the same time, I know I can do this. It wasn’t really a surprise to me. I know I can help my team the way I did tonight going forward.”

He wasn’t the only reserve receiver to make a statement. Tahj Washington led the team with seven catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns. Brenden Rice caught his first touchdown at USC, with a toe-tapping score in the back of the end zone. Kyron Hudson, Michael Jackson III and Terrell Bynum all had multiple catches as well.

“They just stepped up and made some big plays, and we had to have them,” USC coach Lincoln Riley said. “When you have two of your top receivers out, you test the depth of your group. And our group responded.”

Another officiating fiasco

As the final seconds of the first half ticked away Saturday, confusion set in. The ball had yet to be re-spotted, but the clock was running anyway. USC tried to hurriedly run a play as precious seconds ran down, but it was no use.

Soon, the Arizona sideline emptied. The referees conferred. They chose not to do anything — other than tell the teams it was halftime.

Riley flew into a rage. USC athletic director Mike Bohn retweeted comments about Pac-12 refs from afar. For the second week in a row, poor officiating had cost USC.

And for the second consecutive game, Riley found himself answering questions he’d rather not have to about Pac-12 officiating.

The coach admitted that his initial tirade “didn’t give [the refs] a lot of time for an explanation.” But Riley said he eventually got one.

“They admitted it. They messed it up,” he said. “My question was, if you messed it up, why wasn’t it, ‘Stop play and review it’? The explanation given to me at the beginning of the third quarter was they obviously didn’t handle it properly. But anybody knows that watching it.”

Against Utah, the two roughing the passer penalties that cost USC dearly were at least subjective decisions made with the intent of protecting quarterbacks. Saturday’s incident was something else entirely.

Fortunately for USC, it wouldn’t cost them this time.

Line shuffling

When Riley was asked last week whether Andrew Vorhees would be available Saturday after an extended absence from practice, the coach offered no suggestion that USC’s standout left guard might miss the game.

But Vorhees emerged from the tunnel Saturday padless, leaving the Trojans to shuffle the line in a way they hadn’t yet this season.

Right guard Justin Dedich shifted to the left side. Right tackle Jonah Monheim moved inside to right guard. And redshirt freshman Mason Murphy stepped into the open right tackle spot, making his first start at USC.

Mason Murphy is a talented kid, probably the most talented in our room,” Dedich said, “and we all had confidence he was going to do the job, and he did.”

He wasn’t the only one to impress in a new role. Riley praised Monheim for his versatility. “He’s been super valuable,” the coach said.

It was an impressive performance all around for an offensive line playing without one of the top guards in the nation. USC didn’t allow a single sack, and it cleared the way for 210 yards on the ground and a season-high 611 yards overall.

“I was really impressed with how we performed tonight,” Dedich said.

Dime time

Knowing two of its top inside linebackers were likely to be out against one of the most pass-happy teams in the nation, USC resolved early in the week it would rely on its dime package, with six defensive backs on the field, more than usual against Arizona.

“Couple guys down at ‘backer, they need DBs to step up, we were ready,” said redshirt junior safety Bryson Shaw.

It had taken months for Shaw, a transfer from Ohio State, to reach that point. Injuries derailed his introduction at USC. “It’s been tough, of course,” he said. “I’m a competitor.’’

But against Arizona, with an extra defensive back on the field, Shaw finally made his mark. Arizona was driving in the third quarter when the safety saw a familiar formation USC defensive coordinator Alex Grinch warned him would come his way.

When it finally did, Shaw preempted the pass, stealing his first interception at USC. The pick marked a major turning point. On the next play, Williams hit Tahj Washington for a 47-yard touchdown, extending the Trojans’ lead to two scores.

It was a silver lining for a secondary that otherwise gave up 380 passing yards.

Perhaps the betting line for USC games needs 2 lines, the regular line and the adjusted line for officials screwing up!😉

Two touchdowns in 2 games, one given to Utah and one taken away from USC.

One thing is clear more than one touchdown is bad odds I’m not betting on the Trojans again this season. A sure thing about this team is there are no sure things.

Having watched a few replays of TN games, I’d like to see the USC offense run hurry up. Comparing the offense skill positions, the teams are very similar, we could do exactly what they are doing, putting the opponent defenses on their heels and running them silly.

True, but I think we’d score so much it wouldn’t matter about our D.

So so true…I agree 100%; and may I add a quick side note [ off the subject]. Fans complain about SC injuries; please keep in mind that ALL teams deal with injuries, “all” as in 100%. And it’s more about who gets injured. The Trojans can deal with their 2 top receivers out w injuries coz they have many “sufficient” replacements. Now if Caleb or Travis are out, then that’s a much bigger deal. Give kudos to the Utes: They played without Cam Rising and Thomas+Bernard= 5-star adjustment.

If you have a couple hurry up 3 and outs … you may find yourself down 21 in a hurry

LR has a great grasp on modern football … I like to watch him work
Shame he wasn’t allowed to blow the doors off Utah like he was doing would had been interesting how he would had nursed that lead

I’m asserting that USC has equal or better offensive talent than UT, and their offense has faced better defenses than ours, and they rarely have consecutive three and outs. Therefore, if we ran a type and tempo more similar to theirs, we shouldn’t either.

The Pac has not had 5 teams in the top 25 in a long while. While we all know the conference itself is in deep need of help, with leadership waning daily. What I have noticed this season is the quality of QB play around the conference. I cannot remember when there were so many good players at QB at the same time. Along with Caleb at USC, there is Rising at Utah, Nix at Oregon, Penix at WA, Ward at WA St, DeLaura at AZ, DTR at ucla, and even Stanford has McKee. Several of these guys will make… Read more »

I forgot a very good Qb, not Pac12 but west coast, Jake Haener from Fresno. The guy was out for a month, comes back and throws for over 400 yards and comes from behind to beat San Diego St.

The memo is out to the nation’s top QBs that the Pac12 is where you come to rack up big numbers and set yourself up as a high draft pick. The same memo tells the best defensive players that their stats are going to be a bit skewed if they come to the Pac. I believe USC is the only Pac12 school with a chance of recruiting a strong defense, but it isn’t going to be on par with the Alabamas and Georgias any time soon. I think going to the B10 is going to help with recruiting top D.… Read more »

Just a suggestion: Perhaps Officials should have an orange flag as well as a yellow one. The orange one used solely for the “touching-the-QB” penalty. Inside the ball of the orange flag, there is a computer chip, and when an official reaches and touches his orange flag, the flag says “ARE YOU SURE?”😂

Diehard Packer fans, and there’s enough of them around, rooting for the team to lose enough (currently on a 4-game losing streak), to where management has to do something. Sound familiar?

Just read Antonio Morales piece in The Athletic. Thought it was quite good. Remember that SC played without its top two WRs. That happened last year to AL. With its top two WRs, it routed GA. Then, without those WRs, GA then beat AL. That this O functioned as well as it did losing two starting OL (one its best OL) and its top two WRs is really remarkable. As Morales pointed out, we have all known that our front 7 on D was highly suspect – not very deep and not very talented. I always thought Gentry was the… Read more »

I would be curious how well he is at reading the defense for the open receiver whoever that might be. He seems to take an awfully long time at times to throw the ball. He often had plenty of time and no sacks last night. If he can get quicker at knowing who is going to be open he will be deadly. I am guessing that can be one of the hardest if not the hardest skill for a QB.

Yes, Caleb is getting better at reading defenses and his talent is the best.
But he has to realize that he can’t be taking so long to throw in the NFL.
The QB has about 3 seconds to throw and make a decision.
He should try to read a defense quickly and go to the open man as
soon as open.
Learn to throw into tight windows.

Yes, I agree with your tenor [drift] overall, except for the part about the receivers. My opinion [for what it’s worth] is that SC has 4 other receivers that can fill in sufficiently. We, the Trojans have enough in the tank for Cal, Colorado and ND. Dorian Thomson-Robinson will have a “field day” against our Defense unless we can adjust and improve: 1. tackling 2. overzealous attempts to sack the QB. Speed TO THE QB is only 1/2 of the defensive move; one must also have body control to CONTAIN the QB, otherwise the QB can easily sidestep the oncoming… Read more »

The officiating is BAD…and by the the nature of this beast likely to get worst. By next season this season will have been tame. Is Ucla getting bad calls? We saw last night as expected we have a plethora of capable WR’s. We also saw what our D looks like without Eric the ‘master of swat’…. My guess is he’s out, held out next 2 games. My hope he’s back the week of game at the Rose bowl. His return then would certainly fire up a D that looked a tad bit down, dejected 4th Q. Props to Shane lee,… Read more »

Looks like the winner of Georgia-Tennessee will play the winner of Ole Miss-Alabama for the SEC. Ohio St or Michigan will win the Big10. Those winners will take 2 spots in the play offs. That leaves Clemson, TCU and the winner of the Pac12 fighting for the other 2 spots, unless SEC gets 2 undeserved spots. A very good team or two or three will be on the outside looking in, again. Can we just expand the play offs already!

Without Addison and M. Williams, CW had to throw the ball around. 10 different guys made at least one catch and 4 different receivers scored. Could have been a great learning experience for him to have to find that 3rd option and he seemed to me to struggle with that. The Peyton Mannings seem to know the 3rd or 4th will be open as they come up to the line. Spreading the ball around will serve CW well at the next level.

Just think where we would be if the Pac12 had competent officials. USC would have beat Utah by 6 and Arizona by 16(covering the points with backups). 8-0, ranked #6 or 7, and we would have high expectations. Now we just hope for the best and take what we get. When you have to beat the other team AND the refs, that’s a big hill to climb.

The PAC schools have hung on USC’s coattails like forever. But along with it, they have been envious enough to hop on the national accusation bandwagon whenever that opportunity comes. Of course, that is, while pocketing the spoils thanks to Trojan football. We are seeing how deceitful this conference really is showing it’s ugly head in it’s commissioner attacking the LA schools move and ignoring the horrible officiating calls on top of that. It is another season away from ending and you would think with USC football trying to win games and make the playoff putting more money in the… Read more »

I congratulate the backup players who played this game last night. They prepared for the inevitable, not knowing when their number would be called, and they stepped. It’s hard enough to play on the road, let alone without your major starters.
