Rainy USC pro day: Injured Andrew Vorhees’ reflects on viral combine moment
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — The doctor delivered the news early that morning, just before his second day of testing was set to start at the NFL scouting combine. Andrew Vorhees was standing in the Colts locker room in Indianapolis, literally on the doorstep of his NFL dream, when he got word. The anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee was torn. Everything about the start of his NFL career had been suddenly called into question.
When he’d tweaked his knee during drills the day before, Vorhees hadn’t thought much of it, he said. He’d barely felt any pain.
Now, the prognosis landed like a gut punch for USC’s All-American guard, who was unable to run Tuesday at the school’s pro day.
“Definitely devastating,” Vorhees said, “but life is all about how you respond to the events that are happening.”
His response that day would turn him into an unexpected viral video sensation of this draft process, garnering attention from every corner of the football community and beyond. But at the time, Vorhees just tried to focus on what was in front of him. His bench press was two hours away.
“There was no doubt in my mind I was going to go bench,” Vorhees said. “I had to get clearance from the doctor first, but I was like, ‘Hey, look, my knee is hurt, I’m still healthy everywhere else, right?’ ”
When the time came, Vorhees hobbled over on crutches, his leg in an air cast. He couldn’t even plant the leg as he laid back on the bench, gripping the bar with both hands.
But Vorhees did one rep at 225 pounds, then another, then another. He’d do 38 before he finally couldn’t manage any more.
It was the most reps any prospect would manage all week at the combine.
Vorhees continues to be stunned by the outpouring since. He still hasn’t responded to all the texts he received after the bench press video went viral.
“One of the coolest things,” Vorhees said, “was just so many kids reaching out to me saying how inspiring I am to them.”
A long recovery still awaits. Vorhees is scheduled to have surgery on his knee next week. After that, Vorhees said, he “should be cleared sometime in the fall.”
How that timeline might alter the All-American’s draft position remains uncertain. Before the injury, he was expected to be picked somewhere in the first three rounds.
Amid all the positive vibes from his viral bench press, Vorhees has tried not to think too much about where exactly he’s picked in the draft next month. He’s focused instead on his response.
“I try to stay away from that,” Vorhees said. “Just one less thing to put in your mind and worry about.”
Vorhees isn’t the only USC lineman sidelined at the start of his NFL career. Center Brett Neilon, who started alongside Vorhees the last three seasons, suffered a torn Achilles tendon during USC’s Pac-12 title loss to Utah.
Neilon said Tuesday he was three months into an eight- to 10-month recovery process, but assured he would be healthy around the start of training camp.
His late-season injury makes it unlikely he’ll be drafted, but Neilon said he expects to make a full recovery.
“It’d be easy to dwell on it and pout, but that just does nothing,” Neilon said. “It happened, and it is what it is. There’s only one way to get better, and that’s through hard work.”

A torrent of frigid early-morning rain didn’t make for ideal conditions for NFL hopefuls planning to make their mark at USC’s pro day.
Running back Travis Dye, who broke the fibula in his left ankle last November, was especially dismayed by the weather and wet practice field. He hoped a fast 40 time might help ease any concerns from NFL scouts about his speed after the ankle injury.
Dye said his ankle was 100%. The soaking wet turf on Allyson Felix Field? Not so much.
“Every time I sunk my foot down, it felt like I was running in mud,” Dye said.
Jordan Addison didn’t seem to mind much, however.
“The rain came down, so I’m like, OK, now I’m really going to show them what I’m about,” Addison said.
The USC wideout ran routes in the rain, but, as with most of the Trojans’ top draft prospects, didn’t run a 40 because of the inclement weather.
Asked about where he stands in a crowded crop of receiver prospects, Addison was unequivocal.
“I know I’m the best wide receiver in this draft,” Addison said.

Alex Grinch waited two months to speak to the media after his Cotton Bowl flop extravaganza. Good move. What was he gonna say? “I’m horrible” was about the only honest self-eval he could have made. Now Grinch has been allowed to talk again and he’s speaking literally at breakneck speed (and sometimes backpedaling) in great detail about all the stuff USC is doing to fix his record-breaking feeble defense. It’s all pretty predictable, sound bite stuff, such as: “You rip the Band-Aid off real quick.” “It takes a lot of discipline, and it takes a lot of maturity.” “You can’t… Read more »
Based on what LR said, both he and Grinch know that the depth of talent on the DL and the LBs (particularly the OLB position) has NOT been fixed to allow for a quality D, particularly given the last half of the 2023 schedule. My guess is we need at least two (probably thee) more upgrades on the DL and probably one at ILB and two at OLB. Look for moves into the portal after Spring. I think Grinch realizes that his entire career is on the line. He cannot afford to have the D collapse in two or three… Read more »
Even if USC doesn’t add any more defensive help, which we all know they will, the numerous position talent additions that have already been made, especially at the LB/Rush positions (Cobb, Muhammad, Curtis, Greene), will make USC’s D good enough to win the usually weak Pac-12 (I’ll believe the higher expectations this season when I see them). JMHO. So we’ll agree to disagree. This upcoming Trojan D will not lose a game like USC’s D did last year in the infamous Cotton Bowl. That much already seems clear to me, even though it’s not really saying much in view of… Read more »
As USC enters the season and it progresses it will depend on injuries again this season. Injuries killed SC defense last year. Now if they can keep some of the guys they need healthy, with what they have brought in and the guys coming up are going to be playing big roles. Not sure what kind of talent they can get since they got such good talent early from the portal. Guys are not going to transfer to sit on the bench.
But some guys will definitely come over to play for a Heisman Trophy winner-led national championship contender, which USC unquestionably is. I predict more will come to USC after spring ball. The Caleb Williams sales pitch has proven to be very dynamic. Just ask Marshawn Lloyd. USC is once again a very big magnet for those legitimately serious about getting to the NFL. As RJJ has pointed out above, USC still has room for better prospects on D, especially at DL and OLB. And Riley appears to be very adept at the Portal, and USC’s NIL infiltration seems to be… Read more »
They are great for a read but I just cannot take them seriously at all. Unless of course they have USC #1, then of course they are accurate.😆
Interestingly, Athlon’s 2022 Pre-Season mag rank for USC was #9.
AP’s actual final USC 2022 rank was #12. USC’s Cotton Bowl conqueror TULANE actually finished as AP’s #9 pick.
What’s that they say about a blind squirrel?
Allen- great minds do think alike. I too, am pulling for the underdog Zags( my second favorite team is who ever is playing the bruins.)
As for Baseball, it is early, but it feels like the first time in almost 20 years that SC Baseball has a coach that could make them relevant again. Stankiewicz has a great resume. We were picked 10th ( out of 11 teams). If we can just finish at 500 in conference play this year, that bodes well for the future. I hate the idea of ceding baseball superiority to fucla.
GONZAGA (30-5) and 2-point fave but injured UCLA (31-5), the two best programs on the west coast, take on each other tonight at 6:45 pm (CBS). Go Zags!
I know it’s still way, way too early for such conclusions — but USC baseball looks like it just might have landed the first coach in a long time who is capable of earning some respect back for USC on the diamond. Andy Stankiewicz, 11-8-1 so far at USC, has already won back-to-back series at both STAN and CAL. Last night the Trojans beat Seattle 9-4 with six late runs and have won six of its last seven games. Mike Bohn hired new coach Andy Stankiewicz from Grand Canyon where he won five reg-season WAC titles (2015, 2017, 2018, 2021,… Read more »
It looks like Gamecock transfer and 247’s #1 transfer portal RB could be big-time for the Trojans — “MarShawn Lloyd, he’s the real deal,” said LB Mason Cobb of USC’s new 5-9, 215-pound ball carrier. “I’m telling you guys right now, he’s the real deal. He’s just explosive, quick, strong and he just works hard. So, man, you guys just wait. I’m already telling you guys.” “He’s got some leadership qualities,” said Lincoln Riley. “Very, very hard worker.” Caleb Williams has known the versatile, dynamic Lloyd since their days in grade school. They faced each other; now they’ll share the backfield together. “Before… Read more »
All NFL teams sent representation to USC Pro day. That is a positive sign. I never predict the draft, but I am sure USC will be on the board more than once.
I wonder if the spring game will be better than last year, which was much better than anything seen a while. I am reading raves for Dorian Singer, and since he scorched USC ‘s defense last season, maybe he can help improve the other side of the ball.
I hate seeing Malcom Epps leave and wonder if he would consider switching to D-back?
Wouldn’t that be a new prototype, a 6’6″ 260 lb strong safety. What a genius idea Rialto.
He would most likely get torched but he might be one heck of a rush end.
Well it beats the skinny kids who can’t catch, tackle or find their assignments. The key would be to not allow the receivers past him. Btw linebackers are D backs hence the name.
USC loses Reese Dixon-Waters, Malik Thomas to NCAA transfer portal Of the duo, Dixon-Waters played a bigger role this past season and was the Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year. He was nearly a double-figure scorer, averaging 9.8 ppg. Dixon-Waters shot well from inside the arc, coming in at 43.8% from the field. Struggles came from three, shooting 29.6%. Thomas did not get as many minutes, only playing eight a night. The guard did not fare well as a shooter either, dropping 2.4 points per game. In just his second season in college basketball, there is still some potential untapped… Read more »
Malcolm Epps is entering the transfer portal. Guess he wants to go where they throw regularly to Tight Ends so he can improve his draft stock. Good luck to him!
I think he’d rather go where he can play. I’ll stick my neck out here and predict #1 TE prospect Duce Robinson is headed to USC over GA (if he decides to play football), and I don’t think he would consider doing that for a second if LR didn’t have plans for him to be used as a real weapon at USC. Epps has been a very solid player in college. He has 37 career catches and 7 career TDs between both TEXAS and USC. But Robinson is the type who could be a first-rounder, especially the way the NFL… Read more »
I think you nailed it. The WR room is stocked and TE room is not; hence, at present, LR would rather play 4 WRs than 3 and a TE/H back. To help the run, I would think he would rather play 6 OL and 3 WR than play the TEs we presently have on the roster.
It makes you wonder just how much that they think they are locked in with Duce to let a receiver like Epps go portal. I could see Rae going with no problem.
Per Ryan’s board, LR has in post-practice interview and said that SC was not done with adding talent to the team, particularly on the DL and the OL. I expect a couple more kids will be transferring shortly. My guess is Epps was asked to leave. LR said the overall talent is much better this year on D than last, stating that the gap between what the staff thought was good and what was on the depth chart was significant. He said that gap has closed. I really think SC will be looking for DL, OLB, TE and OL. We… Read more »
Alex Grinch — “From a coaching standpoint, what you do is you expect the bullets to be aimed at you. You take those bullets as aimed in the right place and take ownership for it and that’s what we’ve done.”
