Haley Sawyer (OC Register) — USC’s preparation was especially key this week, not just because of the travel involved, but also because 2-0 Purdue looks overwhelmingly different from last season personnel-wise after 56 players transferred out of the program and 54 transfers arrived.
The change came about after the firing of previous head coach Ryan Walters who was replaced by new head coach Barry Odom.
“They’ve got 54 transfers, which is more than anybody else in the country,” CBS play-by-play sportscaster Brad Nessler said, “and I think if you add their signees and their walk-ons, they probably had 82 more players in uniform the first two weeks of the season than they would’ve a year ago. So it’s pretty hard.”
Lincoln Riley told reporters on a Thursday morning Zoom call that film has been available from the Boilermakers’ first two games and the coaching staff knows what to expect schematically.
“With that many new guys, you’re really trying to study the personnel and who they’re featuring and how these guys are playing, how they’re playing together,” Riley said. “This one’s unique. All the years, I’m trying to remember looking back and seeing, like, no returning starters on a side of the ball and this many new players.”
What’s at stake? This is an opportunity for the Trojans to prove they can show up on the road after winning only one away game last season. After two wins, USC remains unranked as poll voters appear unimpressed.
The team has made adjustments to avoid replicating that result in terms of preparation and travel. For one, USC hired a new strength coach in Trumain Carroll, who has received rave reviews from coaches and players for his ability to teach discipline. The practice schedule has also been shuffled, sleep is being emphasized, and the team will travel on a larger plane.
Who’s better? While Purdue is seemingly a step up in competition from USC’s first two opponents, the Trojans should still handle their business with ease and are big favorites. They face an opponent in themselves, however. USC is the second-most penalized team in the Big Ten Conference and gave up 93 yards in penalties last weekend against Georgia Southern.
When Purdue has the ball — North Carolina transfer Ryan Browne was named the starting quarterback just before the Boilermakers’ season opener against Ball State, winning 31-0. Through two games, he’s completed 32 of 49 passes for 481 yards and four touchdowns with one interception and is spreading the ball to multiple receivers.

I saw 3 problems with yesterday’s game aside from the long weather delay:
ND loses!
Notre Dame is going to lose……and screw USC by going from a top 10 to a top 20.
Purdue is better than advertised. Much better than last year. Strong defense as should be expected from Barry Odom and offense is not bad. Boilermakers will give the BIG trouble. USC, on the road, 3 hr delay in a cramped visitors locker room, got off to a slow start (delay or sloggy field), big plays on both sides, heavy run game and pounded the rock in the last 5 to close it out. Riley may finally have the confidence in the running game and maybe the guy we hoped he would be 4 years ago. Youngstown gave Mich St fits… Read more »
The red zone defense is awesome, its the bend but don’t break defense they play on the rest of the field that hurts. Pass rush is incredible this season, great stunts and blitzes. Cornors give to much ground. Offense is a pleasant surprise, Maiava is an excellent passer, especially the long balls. The way Purdue over pursued Maiava could have had a couple more touchdowns had he held on to the ball and ran. Running game excellent with whoever was in at the moment. The run game actually opened the passing lanes. Not the strongest win but a win nonetheless.
Good win……on the road……against a BIG team. We should move up a couple slots in the poll. Onward and upward.
The best play of the game was Mr. Jarrett rumbling down the field for the 70 yard pick 6. That is a large human being. Congrats to him. I echo the sentiments of several posters about the penalties. SC was lucky not to be hurt too badly by them. Jordan didn’t do much until the 4th quarter and then he was a stud. I really like the King. Hope he gets more than 2 series a game. ATL DDS is right on re: the DBs. Tackling left a lot to be desired. I almost want to say something nice about… Read more »
I hate betting against USC almost as much as I hate B1G refs
Good win but we need to clean up the penalties.
Running game and defense we’re good but we need to tackle better in space.
Interception and took out a ref play of the day!
Thank God our safeties can play.
Thank goodness. A red zone pick.
we are making this quarterback look like a fucking five star
Yes. And we are making stupid penalties
A & M just went ahead of the Irish. 28-24 a minute left in the third.
Pardon me it was halftime.
I hope Purdue is better than advertised or we have problems in our defensive backfield. Too many completions, poor tackling.
Nice wish, but Purdue is not a good team. We have a serious issue with our DBs. Mark my words, they’ll be exploited from here on out.
You may be right. But this is not a 1-11 Purdue team of 2024
They will create some havoc in the B1G before its over.
That soft bend but don’t break gets us in trouble. Great defense in the red zone where they have to tighten up though.
Well that was nice. And a little encouragement from the defensive coordinator goes a long way too.
That had to be heaviest player ever scoring on a long pick six
Why can’t our corners contest a freaking pass. Defense is pathetic.
Please please please Riley fight your impulses and stay balanced. Getting that feeling.
A fluke play and a debatable call on the forward pass being picked up after the bounce. As like last season, we have to beat the refs as well.
Did you notice they didn’t draw a line to prove their point? If the ball had been batted out of bounds the refs would have been called incomplete.
That’s a great point. I was wondering that myself. I guess with a HOF Purdue Alum on the telestrater(sp?) it was never going to happen.
Our Corners are trash.
Purdue’s corners are 100 times better than ours.
In person, Maiava’s deep balls are very pretty.
CBS announcers are so anti SC
💯
We kind of have a Purdue alumni homer in the booth
Yeah I know that but even Brad Nessler is hating on us too.
We are definitely being treated as outsiders. If I didn’t know it for sure I would not know the Trojan band was there. Every break shows the Purdue pep band. I’m guessing the TMB is somewhere in the corner of the stadium.
I was there, just got back to my brother’s house in Indy. Purdue’s band took up a whole end zone 5 rows deep. Meanwhile, they stuffed our band way up on the top rows in the corner of the visitor’s side. Did all they could to make them a non factor.
Further evidence of the truth of LR’s assertion: “That’s the nature of the road. You have to withstand it.”
Good first half but too many penalties and poor tackling in space
Need to keep running the ball and control the clock.
20 rushing 14 passing in the first half, Golden should be happy.
😀
Our D-backfield is doing a poor job of getting the ball carrier down. And the penalties are adding up!
Defense is playing sloppy today. Let’s see how we come out in the second half. A good defense coordinator will clean that all up.
Purdue tackles are holding every play.
These refs are BS!!!! They are obviously paid off and Biased.
Still part of the welcome to the big 10 program for USC.
Holding on an interior lineman? Jumping the shield? Wow
Love the refs. If first you miss the try, try try again.
Penalties. again.
BS call home cooking again
Apparently Gary Danielson is being honored as a Purdue alum. His homerism is becoming tedious on the broadcast.
Tanook Hines!
I can’t wait for him to catch one in the open and then turn on his speed.
Tanook shows his stuff
Wow. Waymond Jordan having a hard time getting untracked.
Dodged a bullet there. Nice pick. My eyes are telling me, I hate to say it, but being able to see the whole field, the D looks slow and out of position.
It was a great pick. For a split second, I thought PUR had scored, but it was snatched away!
Great time to intercept
Expect long commercial breaks. There was no money made during the delay.
Why can’t we run between the tackles against Purdue’s three man front?
Shades of Lincoln Riley inside the 10 in 2024. So we settle for three.
I think USC will eventually bust out.
The offense is looking….good!
Lets get it going!
There’s hope.
Finally!
Inch and a half of rain. Field in excellent condition. Teams will warm up for 30 mins due to long wait.
Standing outside the stadium. PA just announced 6:45 kickoff.
Just starting allowing us back in.
Have most the fans hung around for re-entry, or have a significant amount split?
Seems about half full. All Trojans who made the trip are here though.
Here’s a shot of the home side. I’m on the 50, row 36, visitor’s side.
Looks like the rain will stop by kick off. Wonder how the grass field will hold up? Will that change the game plan for both teams?
May need to get out the longer cleats.
Any updates on when the game might start?
Radar shows it should clear around 5:20 EST. They need 30 minutes due to the thunder rule so around 6 we should be in operation.
Another cell showed up….looking at another 40-50 minutes until kickoff. .
MO ST is beating SMU 10-0 with 2:55 to go in the 1st Q.
Mo St gave up a last minute TD in the first half. Smu leads 24-10
The weather delay has me worried that this might turn into a loss for us. Hoping I am wrong.
You are, my friend. Of course the delay will affect USC, but it will affect Purdue also. I don’t think Purdue practices is torrential downpours either.
Well, I’m here, and so is the rain. They ran us out of the stadium. Currently hanging out in the Purdue basketball arena with a few thousand others.
Bummer, might be a night game here after all.
Thanks for update
