USC football looks for another defensive gem against Louisiana
Coming off an inspiring shutout of Fresno State, the 14th-ranked Trojans host the upset-minded Ragin’ Cajuns on Saturday night

LOUISIANA (1-0) at No. 14 USC (2-0), Saturday, 8 p.m., Coliseum, TV/Radio: Big Ten Network/710 AM, Line: USC by 30½ points
Notable Injuries
USC: OUT: C Kilian O’Connor (knee); QUESTIONABLE: TE Tucker Ashcraft (undisclosed), WR Terrell Anderson (undisclosed), QB Sam Huard (undisclosed), DE Braylan Shelby (undisclosed), DT Jahkeem Stewart (foot), S Marquis Gallegos (undisclosed).
Haley Sawyer (OC Register) — Louisiana football coach Michael Desormeaux has been to California only once, on a trip to Lake Tahoe. He’s also seen a defense like USC’s only one other time in his life.
“They have got some creatures on defense,” Desormeaux told reporters. “This is probably the best defensive line in 11 years of being here, outside of maybe Alabama in ’18.”
That Alabama team was a national championship runner-up and held seven of its opponents to two touchdowns or less that season. USC (2-0) still has to finish the nonconference season, but Desormeaux’s assessment could be sage-like when it comes to Saturday night’s matchup at the Coliseum.
Defensive coordinator Gary Patterson coached the Trojans’ defense to its first shutout win since 2024 when they beat Fresno State, 39-0, last week. It marked the first time since 2009 that USC has held opponents scoreless in the first half in back-to-back games.
“Ultimately, it’s everyone doing their job at a high level, high speed,” Trojans defensive tackle Jide Abasiri said. “Just trusting the guy next to you to do their job. I feel like we just trust each other more overall, as a whole defense. The biggest thing for us is just trust.”
Abasiri has burst onto the scene this season as one of the most intimidating forces on USC’s defense. The junior from Minnesota is among the best pass-rushers in the country, and his physical transformation has him taking double teams and clearing the way for the rest of the defense.
“A great interior defensive lineman is so tough on offenses because everything you do is going to be affected,” USC head coach Lincoln Riley said. “That’s the kind of impact really good ones have and that’s what Jide is doing for us right now.”
This will be the first game between USC and Louisiana (1-0), which is projected to finish second in the Sun Belt Conference’s West Division.
When Louisiana has the ball
Quarterback D’Wanye’ “Lunch” Winfield is in his second season as a starting quarterback after earning the job halfway through the 2025 season.
He passed for 1,555 yards and 11 touchdowns last season while rushing for another 667 yards and nine touchdowns, even as the offensive line took a hit. Seven of the top tackles on the depth chart missed playing time last season due to injury.
“He’s far and away the most athletic quarterback that we’ve seen up to this point,” Riley said.
Winfield will be down a key target with leading receiver Shelton Sampson ruled out due to injury, so the Ragin’ Cajuns will likely rely on their running game for the second consecutive game.
Cutting off rushing lanes will be the key to stopping Winfield, who threw for 189 yards and rushed for a team-leading 84 yards and one touchdown in last weekend’s 38-7 season-opening victory against Lamar. USC will also need to play tough red-zone defense, considering Louisiana scored all five of its touchdowns against Lamar on the ground from 25 yards or less.
Desormeaux doesn’t want his team’s toughness to stop there, either.
“We’ve gotta play harder than they do,” he said. “Period. We’ve gotta play harder and we’ve gotta want to win the game more than they do. It has to mean more to us to have a chance in this game.”
When USC has the ball
Jayden Maiava has been on a tear in USC’s first two games, completing 88.9% of his passes (48 of 54) for 635 yards and five touchdowns. A reconfigured offensive line has allowed him to be sacked only once.
The Trojans’ offense was nearly equally balanced between the run and pass last week against Fresno State, but it wants to take a step forward in the lesser successful running game after rushing for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Ball security will also be important after fumbles by Waymond Jordan and Kayden Dixon-Wyatt.
Small Breakdowns
“We’ve done the majority of things pretty well,” Riley said. “But we seem to have had some small breakdowns here and there, whether it’s not leveraging a block correctly, missing a cut. I put us in bad situations at least twice the other night.”
Great receivers look to exploit Ragin’ Cajuns
Sophomore Tanook Hines played against Fresno State after missing the season opener due to injury and adds to a receiving corps that has been led by freshmen. Trent Mosley (4) is the team’s leading receiver with 11 catches for 222 yards and Kayden Dixon-Wyatt (who was committed to OHIO ST as a prep before he flipped to USC) is second with 10 receptions for 138 yards.
Louisiana returns its best interior lineman in Fitzgerald West Jr., who made 23 tackles and two sacks last season. Cornerback Brent Gordon Jr. anchors the secondary and was an All-Sun Belt Conference first-team pick after recording a team-best 62 tackles.
What’s at stake? This is USC’s final nonconference game before the Trojans take their longest road trip of the season to open Big Ten play at feeble 0-2 Rutgers. It’s one last chance to tie up loose ends, especially when it comes to getting previously injured players some live-game repetitions. If players like defensive tackle Jahkeem Stewart and defensive end Braylan Shelby aren’t available, it could foreshadow depth complications.
Who’s better? USC is better, and they’ll need to show that they’re better for a complete four quarters. The Trojans couldn’t close out their season opener at a high level once the starting players exited the game, but they showed dramatic improvement up and down the depth chart when they shut out Fresno State the following week. They should continue on that trajectory, regardless if a few of the injured players make their return this week. The Ragin’ Cajuns, from the Sun Belt Conference, are coming off a 6-7 season, which ended in a 20-13 loss to Delaware in the 68 Ventures Bowl in Mobile, Ala.
Matchup to watch: Louisiana’s passing game vs. USC’s defensive front. Ragin’ Cajuns coach Michael Desormeaux told reporters earlier this week that his target completion percentage for dual-threat quarterback Lunch Winfield is 70%. The junior hit that mark in a 38-7 season-opening victory against Lamar … and threw two interceptions. If Jide Abasiri and the rest of the Trojans’ D-line can impose their will, the secondary could clean up with some interceptions.
Playing tough-against-the-run red-zone defense gives USC its best chance of keeping Louisiana off the board. All of the Ragin’ Cajuns’ touchdowns against Lamar were scored on the ground from 25 yards or less.
Prediction:USC 42, Louisiana 7. The Trojans go 3-0 in nonconference games before charging into Big Ten play against disappointing Rutgers, with the dangerous #6 ranked Oregon Ducks on tap for USC in the Coliseum on Sept. 26.

One Oregon podcaster was saying that Oregon made a big mistake hiring their new OC and DC from within. He said he didn’t think that these guys were qualified and they should have gone out and hired proven co-ordinators. I hope we didn’t make the same mistake with our O-Line and D-Line coaches.
The pundit was saying that the SC game was their whole season….lose that and they will end up like ND last year. They’re going to come to LA with smoke and fire coming out of their ears. We better not take them lightly just because they are not playing well right now.
We’re going to lose 2 maybe 3 games this year. I originally said 10-2 but if they lose 3 games I wouldn’t be shocked. I was originally thinking that, starting with Oregon, we had 6 brutal games in a row. But if you look at the schedule, it’s really 8 brutal games in a row. Maryland is rated 9th in the country offensively and 4th defensively. True, they played Hampton and Conneticutt. I don’t know how good Hampton is but Conneticutt is a good team and they walked all over both of those teams. Then the last game is a… Read more »
One of the best things about Jaden Maiva is his pocket presence. I’m not talking about scrambling. The pocket has a tendency to move and Jaden has a great ability to keep his eyes downfield while, at the same time stepping up in the pocket when he needs too. Matt Leinart, who couldn’t scramble at all, was like that in that he was able to give himself extra by his pocket presence.
The word is out. In three games USC has shown that if you keep pushing you will be better than the Trojans in the end. USC used to play hard and make the opponent give up. Not anymore. Just keep plugging away eventually Riley won’t just snatch the defeat from the jaws of victory he will spoon feed the other team a victory.
It’s scary this is how we have lost most of our games. Lincoln Riley just has too much nice guy in him. Play players who want to prove we’re good not players who wear their uniforms correctly.
I’m still concerned about the running game although Louisiana was a step in the right direction. We’re still 67th in the nation in YPG. I do believe that all 3 of these teams that we have played will turn out to be good teams at the end of the season. But we’re still only averaging 4.4YPC. All our RB’s and O-Linemen are back from last year where we averaged 5.1YPC. The Rutgers game will tell a lot. Everyone else has run on Rutgers. Let’s see what we do.
We really didn’t come to play hard tonight, with a few exceptions. 9-3 is the best we can hope for. DL is greatly improved,,but our back 7 is inconsistent at best.
Maieva is capable of brilliance, but is still inconsistent. Our running game is worse and I don’t know why that is. The OL needs an intensity injection otherwise the top teams in the conference with just stuff us.
Up 35-17, USC needs to finish strong. Style points matter in the hunt for better rankings — which are necessary. Hopefully LR has learned how to read the room. Another slow finish is definitely not what the doctor ordered — I hope.

The second stringers cannot tackle
Slow too. Much less quick. We definitely lack defensive depth IMO.
Who would have ever predicted the RC’s would hang 30 on us?

That’s a TD.

It’s almost 2:09am here. Goodnight y’all!
If you stick around we might break the century mark… in penalties we’re at 78 right now.
Let’s get 50!
Why do we feel the need to back off the gas in the 4th quarter? If you want to be dominant you cannot do this each week
Maybe Lincoln doesn’t have the “dominate chip.” Who knew?
Oklahoma I guess. They know
Sooner fans must be boiling about their no-show in Ann Arbor.
They only had 289 total offensive yds (189 passing and 100 rushing). Bad QB play and no real rushing attack.
he can’t be expected to do that, he’s a beta male in the football world.
D’Wanye’ “Lunch” Winfield is a LOAD! Dude can play.
Put the defense back in would you
When our real schedule starts in the B1G, teams are going to kill us with the pass.
Time to bury Louisana!
At times Maiava has been as sharp as a paint brush tonight.
Too many penalties in this game. Have to clean this up.

Really holding on a kickoff? Not ready for prime time. It looks like the players are trying to match their opponent’s yardage with penalties yardage.
Penalty on the return🤬
The defensive coordinator is going to have dumbass chewing stew next week. I wouldn’t want to be on a plane across country with him next week.
This has been the worst showing so far. The games won’t get any easier and these guys are not ready.
Another stupid penalty
Looks like it’s gonna cost us seven.
It will probably lead to seven points when we should have gotten away without LA scoring.
Our DBs will lose at least one game for SC this season, if not more!
Nice of the backfield to show up… late.
If you see our D back you know they’re out of place.
Is it too early to start Mosley for Heisman talk?
Mosley what a catch!
Reminds you of Lemon
Looks like Riley is sitting Bowman for the 2nd half.
He did take a hard shot earlier.
It’s been a long time.
Trent Mosley gives USC its first punt return TD in three years. Boy, was that a thing of beauty.
Wafle 5 tackles Abasiri 4
22 rush, 22 pass plays 5.8 yds per rush 294 USC 121 Cajins. Bowman and Mosely!!!
What was that about at the end of the half, why call time outs to get the ball, then do nothing? Does anyone have a plan?
Lets se if he can do it again
That was a good defensive series.
Special teams! Ya Baby. So glad we hired Ekeler.
Beautiful punt return for a TD! Moseley is the real deal!
Special teams gets a score
Defense has definitely not been as sharp as last week
I will bet we will not see a pick six from the defensive backfield this season
OMG! We almost had one! Perfect timing.
Oops jinxed that
I hate when we have to wait all dang day to finally get to see this team come out and play like they would rather be doing something else.
That’s one way to avoid a sure pick!
Maieva got lucky he didn’t throw another pick.
Bowman is the only player who wants to win
Bowman is the player of the half!
penalties kind of show their mental state
Maiava seems hurt. Jonas Williams might be a good option here.
That is probably a good idea
put in 22 he likes to run
No wonder the symbol of the team is a juice box … these kids a playing like it’s past their bedtime
guys are going down on first contact.
I also see the RBs getting tackled low on the legs. I can’t figure out if that is normal. Maybe they need to run a few more high knees drills.
Urlacker was lacking?
😂
Remember. Urlacher is a lot better going forward than backward.
So much for messing the other team
Our DBs are nothing to brag about.
