Missouri State at USC: Will the Trojans beat up on the Bears in the Coliseum?
What’s at stake, injuries, who’s better and why, key matchups to watch, game score and season predictions, TV/radio info …

Notable injuries — USC: OUT: CB Prophet Brown (lower body), K Caden Chittenden (undisclosed); DB Alex Graham (undisclosed) QUESTIONABLE: DL Jahkeem Stewart (lower body, 50/50 chance will play)
Missouri State: OUT: TE Gary Clinton (leg); QUESTIONABLE: WR James BlackStrain (thumb)
Lincoln Riley is set to embark on another critical season at USC as he attempts to reset the program back on an upward trajectory after two consecutive disappointing seasons.
I believe USC is a seven- or eight-win team this season. This feels like the first year of a rebuild instead of Year 4.
You can blame that on NIL. You can also certainly put some of that blame on Riley and the coaching staff (which has been improved the last two years). You can blame some of that on USC’s past administrative decisions. But the truth is the roster lacks certainty at some really important spots (QB, OL, CB) and doesn’t have great depth at others (LB, WR). There are too many landmines (ND, ORE, ILL, NEB, MICH, IOWA, UCLA) for an imperfect roster to navigate.
What’s at stake? USC has to make a statement from beginning to end in this first game if it wants to be taken seriously for the rest of the season. The Trojans need to flaunt all-around depth and score in a variety of ways to prove that Jayden Maiava is a reliable quarterback with sufficient poise to lead this team through a precarious season of high expectations.
Maiava is talented and has a strong arm, but his poor decision-making and interceptions left a lot to be desired in his four starts (three wins) last season. He has received heaps of praise for his offseason training and leadership development.
Missouri State has nothing to lose and will play like it. The Bears are new to the FBS and getting a team like USC on the schedule is a win in itself. It gives them increased revenue, exposure on national television and the opportunity to show their product in front of a swath of potential recruits.
Who’s better? USC will be the more talented, physically imposing team. So this game will allow the coaching staff to get a good look at any potential holes in the game plan. Although some players have solidified their place as starters, expect to see lots of faces throughout all four quarters as the coaches figure out the best combination of players to put on the field. As last season demonstrated, if the season goes sideways, then all bets are off regarding USC’s QB starter down the line. But for today’s game, five-star freshman Husan Longstreet won’t be expected to play unless in mop-up duty.
Matchups to watch: USC’s offensive line vs. Missouri State’s front four. The O-line is one of the weakest spots on the field for the Trojans and could give up some losses if the Bears see mistakes to take advantage of. Missouri State has transfers from Oregon State and Penn State on the edge in 6-6, 275-pound Davon Townley and 6-4, 255-pound D.J. Wesolak, who have played in environments like the Coliseum before.
USC OLs Amos Talalele (75), Alani Noa and unexpected new OC starter Kilian O’Connor (who originally walked on) warm up before a game last season. “I came here to be a player,” O’Connor said. “I didn’t come here just to be a bag holder.”(Gina Ferazzi / LAT)
USC wins if:
Fresno is killing GA southern on the ground, going over, through, and around them almost at will. Gomer is going to get embarressed next Saturday.
No need to worry about Helton, he’s used to getting embarrassed in the Coliseum. 😜
Another great Saturday! Ice cream for all.
Uncle Higgs treats his soft warriors well.
3 teams in the top 10 lost today. Watch USC move into the polls now.
Great win tonight, for once our season opener is an all around feel good win.
Meanwhile, across town, that other team is getting run over by the Utes.
Pitiful UCLA is being completely brutalized by UTAH 20-0 with 12 mins left in the 2nd Q.
DeBong just may not know what he is doing. 😂
That nickname slays me! 😂
I like it too. It’s an award winner for the little gutties who are losing to the Utes at half, 23-7.
My daughter was railing against the fact that Gentleman Clay’s contract was extended for no apparent reason.
”Been there, done that,” I said. And I told her when her Alma Mater hired that underwhelming tub of mediocrity they were settling for a plateau of .500 seasons.
Ya, your daughter is in for a rough road I’m afraid. You tried to warn her.
But even I didn’t expect FRESNO ST to rout Helton’s outfit 42-14. Maybe someone can find a quote where he refers to his Eagles as “warriors.”
The problem is, that warrior mentality doesn’t sound so good when you are getting your butt kicked.
DeBong and the Foster children- sounds like a grunge band.
😂
Total Karma for that Knucklehead Foster. He talked trash about Joey Aguilar, and kept bragging that this years version of the gutties was ” his team”. He doesn’t know how to talk to the media, and he writes checks he can’t cash.
I hope he is roaming the sidelines at the empty Rose Bowl for years to come
I used “Coach Bong” yesterday and it felt good.
Watching Fresno/GA Southern. They (GA) don’t look much better than MO St. Fresno is winning right now.
Cool seeing Kurt Warner in the stands with his FUS gear on pulling for his son. And Fresno’s HC looks familiar for some reason…😉
Very happy with the results today, We were able to play lots of players and won easily and didn’t have any major injuries.
I think everyone in pads got PT. King Miller, #4 RB was the top rusher in the game, 80 yards for him.
i know SC scored 80 points against Pomona over a century ago, but are we getting to a school record for the modern era?
Most points scored since 1930
Awesome!
thanks, JW.
We beat UCLA 76-0 in 1929.
So our best score in almost a hundred years! But I wasn’t bored one bit. I saw a dynamic sideline for the whole game. I like this team’s spirit and drive!
It’s good to be good. I think we are.
We can feel optimistic, even if was against a division 1-AA opponent. Putting up 70 on anyone is impressive.
#90 Gus Cordova is in. This kid is a human wreaking ball. He is going to be great.
UCLA has a chance to be the only BIG team to ……..lose.
What is the score for Coach Bong’s team?
Not started yet…..just being hopeful.
They are playing Utah at the Rose Bowl at 8pm PT
I’ll be in bed by that time🥱😴
Wow we get to revel in the feeling of the good old days. And say Maybe….
Yeah, Longstreet is like an extra RB when he is on the field. That will freeze a lot of LBs and DBs on pass plays. Good for our receivers to get open.
I didn’t expect Longstreet to be so slick, and fast. Very composed too for first CFB game ever.
I am glad LR blew off that kid QB from Carrollton, GA..
I could not understand why USC remained attached to him for so long.
Thankfully, Longstreet was willing to wait his turn until USC decided to (or was forced to) switch over.
Wow. King Miller and Jaden Richardson are fast.
Alabama showing up at Nick Saban’s house
It’s not Nick you have to convince, it’s his wife. Maybe she is tired of him being home so much.
I have heard wives of retired men say,”for better, for worse, but not for lunch.”
So true. I recently ran into some old USC friends, both of whom met at USC and later married. He became a very successful businessman. He eventually retired but has found it frustrating finding something that interests him as much as his business success. His wife is definitely pulling for him to get out of the house more. 😉 🤔
the front 7 look fantastic against the pass. The secondary looks disciplined for the most part. Only one assignment mistake, which led to the only touchdown for Missouri St. Definitely better than last year. This team should at least go nine and three.
There is definitely more pressure from the ends and the tackles. We will have to see how this team plays next week against Georgia Southern and then Purdue.
I think Illinois will be the first real test for this team. I like how we are developing young talent now. You can see the improvement.
Our DL looks so much more physical and athletic.
I know it’s only MO ST, but we’re majorly improved there it seems.
Definitely improved Allen. I agree 100%.
Great to see. Maybe USC is getting their swag back a little. It’s just a step, I know. But this is a very promising looking opener, regardless of our opponent.
No injuries, please.
The program is definitely moving in the right direction. I look at this season as a rebuilding year. However the talent, the coaching staff, the front office commitment, it’s much different than previous years.
There was nowhere to go but up.
But regardless of where USC football has come from, it’s great to see so many young Trojans having fun, scoring at will and showing signs of a new football culture at USC and a team that will be taken seriously by the CFB world again.
0-1 FRESNO ST is leading Clay Helton’s outfit 10-7 near the end of the 1st Q.
Love the D Line
WTF (why the fumble) since when can you reach under another player and claim the ball?
Yeah, that was strange.
I like what we were seeing from Longstreet
I am kind of surprised to see him in and look so confortable for his first pt.
Even if he fumbled.
He is going to be a great QB for us. Maiava looks much improved.
I’m optimistic about a few things. First football smarts. I often said our “stars” ran the wrong way after a catch. So far nobody has done that. Second clock management was better. I hope this team continues to improve.
Husan Longstreet is in! Fantastic.
It is a good move…..glad it’s early so he gets some serious time.
Longstreet in at QB. Looks much smaller than Maiava.
Only lists at 6-0, 200. He runs very well.
Yes he does……nice to see!
Yeah, just ask that Mo St player whose helmet he knocked off. Tough kid, I love what I see from our QBs.
But he is really fast. Runs like a RB.
Kyron Hudson had a good game for PSU today. Yet another Trojan expat performing well for a new team.
I hope LR has learned his lesson that he doesn’t need 18 good-to-great WRs on the roster. Choose better. Get maulers on defense and big uglies to control the game by providing great protection for your QB and to be able to run the ball whenever and for however long you want to eat clock.
Am I right or what?
The O Line looks good and I like the two Tight Ends Look
This is one of the best stables of RB we have had in a long time.
Maiava 297 yds 15 for 18 attempts. A lot of yards after catch so far.
No interceptions. And no passes that you look at and say ” wow, he is lucky to have that one back”.I know the competition is weak, but Jaden appears to playing more in control.
One of his incompletions, was a drop by J.Lane.
If Maieva continues at this level, we are in good shape for this season.
If you bet the over 59.5 total, you have to feel pretty good on your chances 😉
I’ve never seen an 80 point score…..
Having fun so far SC fans!
Offense looks good so far. Defense is better than last year. So far so good.
The Miss team wants to know if we would take all their NIL money to end this at the half.
Will somebody make a quick trip for water and oats……a certain horse is going to be totally worn out before this is done.
I was at a USC game once when Traveler got loose and took off galloping wildly all over the field.
It was quite a spectacle. We were all glad our treasured mascot (which never gets enough credit nationwide IMO) didn’t get hurt.
Poor thing…..probably scared to death.
Hey—I remember when Traveler slipped of his hooves while galloping on one of the curves of the old light green colored (?) track. It was pre-1984 Olympics. Scary to see that happen. I think Richard Sauko was still the rider.
Waymond Jordan looks dangerous as hell. He’ll open the play action game like nobodies business. Yippee!
Good to see the TE being used.
Clemson 3 LSU 0 at the end of the 1st quarter
28 unanswered points—it looks like the Trojans have stopped playing with their food. 😆
Wow a TE TD!
Wow. A TE who can cut and run. Good for Lake McRee!
Early opinion: oline run blocking is better than their pass blocking.
I can see why they started OConnor at center. He is that good.
Zachariah Branch had 100 yards receiving and had a 47 yard TD for UGA.
I wonder if he was dogging it last season? How did he look so pedestrian after a freshman All-American season?
Remember how he refused to return punts as a Trojan last season. Even with a lot of room to run. Just bizarre.
That was really weird. Like almost psychological
No one could figure it out, not even the USC coaches.
Now the Defense needs to show some pressure
Waymond Jordan looks good!
OMG, we ran for a TD. Maybe Riley has changed
I want LR to take one or two quarters and call nothing but rushing plays.
Waymond Jordan…….wow.
He better see the ball at least 25 times a game
Underwhelming performance so far…
If Missouri St dline continues to get that kind of pressure it does not bode well for our oline reputation.
Not much of a pass rush on defense but it’s the first game
Looks like the defense is plying down to the level of their competition.
Playing down…
Well we get Yogi Roth so there will be lots of SC love
Yogi loves everybody. He’s the ultimate in saying what every program wishes for.

Thanks!
I’am sitting here in shock…….Bama is going down.
On the positive side…….another SEC loss…….it’s a good day!
Come on Clemson……make it great.
It may not help this year but one of these days being a member of the best conference will help USC make the playoffs.
My score prediction: SC 56-10. Game should be over by the end of the first quarter.
Sounds good!
As long as they beat the spread I am ok with any score.
FSU has reverted to it horrible 2024 form and has totally allowed ALA back into the game, leading only 24-17 with 11 mins to go in the 4th Q (ABC). It all started with a terrible muffed punt, gifting a short TD drive to ALA.
We see this so often. Underdog team scares the hell out of a much higher ranked brand outfit, only to fully crumble in the 4th Q.
Will FSU continue to slide back into oblivion? Or will they bow up and hold on to this lead to win. Only the football gods know for sure.
The unpredictability of CFB—thats why we love it so.
Best sport ever. ✌
FSU takes over, 31-17. Ya baby!
“They don’t have Nick Saban to save them.”
Kalen DeBoer is already on the hot seat and this will make it hotter for him
I still think if USC fired Riley, DeBoer would be my first choice, and he might take it just to get out of Tuscaloosa.
DeBoer would not be my first choice.
He should have stayed at UW. Following Saban is nuts, regardless of the money. ALA’s offense looks punchless and horrible under DeBoer. No ability to run the ball whatsoever today.
Home dogs cover the spread about 66% of the time. So taking Florida St and 13.5 points is going to be a winner.
