DJ Rodman commits to USC men’s hoops, will team up with Bronny James
Rodman averaged 9.6 points and 5.8 rebs per game in 31 contests for WSU last season
SI.com — Rodman (6-6) gives USC the forward it so desperately needed with Drew Peterson graduating and Tre White transferring to Louisville.
We expect Rodman to start for USC next season alongside the guard trio of Boogie Ellis, Isaiah Collier and Kobe Johnson. USC’s starting center will either be Joshua Morgan or Vincent Iwuchukwu.
Rodman became a WSU fan favorite, known for his energy and gritty style of play – Rodman did the “dirty work,” battling for rebounds, taking charges and diving on the floor for loose balls.
Dennis Rodman’s son didn’t put up big numbers for WSU, but his leadership and hustle will be difficult for the Cougars to replace.
The addition of Rodman puts USC at 11 scholarships for next season assuming James is on scholarship. The scholarship limit is 12, which means the Trojans may not be done in the transfer portal.
“All these ups and downs, lefts and rights led me to Fight On,” Rodman said on Instagram.
This recruiting momentum comes just 72 hours after Bronny James, the son of LeBron and a 4-star recruit, announced his commitment to the Trojans, who are trending toward the top 15-20 range in preseason polls.

Jon Wilner’s Latest Pac-12 QB Comfort Rankings Wilner — The unprecedented attention heaped on the Pac-12’s stellar lineup of QBs is ever-so-slightly misguided. A portion of that spotlight should be directed at what lies in the shadows. At the understudies. The second stringers. There’s more to QB play than the quality of the starter, and the Hotline’s QB Comfort Quotient (QBCQ) attempts to address the depth across the conference. Teams with solid options if their starter is injured stand the best chance to navigate the season. 1. UW Projected starter: Michael Penix Jr. Top reserves: Dylan Morris, Austin Mack 2. USC Projected… Read more »
Wilner never has been a USC guy, but now he’s an anyone but USC guy. The Big10 move really stirred him up.
Report: FSU, 6 Other ACC Schools Exploring ‘How Unbreakable’ Grant-of-Rights Deal Is Joseph Zucker (The Bleacher Report) — The ACC could soon have a crisis on its hands. The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reported Monday that Clemson, Florida State, Miami, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia and Virginia Tech have had conversations with lawyers to explore “just how unbreakable” the ACC’s grant-of-rights deal is. Sports Illustrated‘s Ross Dellenger had earlier used that phrase without naming all the schools in a report that noted fissures emerging within the conference: “A subset of seven schools in the 14-member conference has coalesced over what many of them… Read more »
Shows the brilliance of the SC move to the B10. This is just noise. I think the $120 Million buy out will discourage any team from leaving. OK and TX left a year early at $50 Million each, but they will make that up in a year.
The elites of Power 5 football and basketball should form a Super Conference. Take the top 5 in each, add ND and you have 2 divisions of 13, east and west, with a playoff system. Might happen in another 20 years the way they work!
Have always felt the ACC was too large of a Conference. There is a definite difference between what I would call the “haves” and the “have nots”. I don’t follow them much, only if they are the only game I can watch on TV. I’d rather watch a good MAC or Mtn. West football game instead of a boring ACC one. JMHO.
DeMar DeRozan: Bronny James Is ‘Perfect Person’ to Push USC MCBB to ‘Another Level’ Dorac Sam (Bleacher Report) — USC isn’t considered a basketball school thanks to its famous football team, but the arrival of Bronny James could change that. Chicago Bulls star and former Trojan DeMar DeRozan discussed James’ commitment to USC on Podcast P with Paul George and said he believes this could be a monumental addition for the program. “Basketball-wise, you just need that big name to come there to bring that attention, and he’s the perfect person for that. I think the way he comes in, the way… Read more »
It is an interesting thought. He can use his dad’s fame and his talent to establish a program. Assuming he stays two years, he could lead SC into the B10. The real key is whether or not he attracts some big time large man talent. If he could bring in two or three big time talents, he could establish “Showtime 2” at SC. Not certain it will work, but the fact we are even discussing it is remarkable.
Certainly Lebron and Dennis want their sons to succeed in college ball. If I were them I would want to help surround them with the talent they need any way I could. With NIL anything is possible.
GA Bulldogs beat out USC, NEB for top 2024 QB prospect Dylan Raiola Matt Wadleigh (Clutch Points) — The rich get richer. That is true for the Georgia Bulldogs, as they have won back-to-back college football national titles. Now, the Bulldogs landed a commitment from five-star QB and top 2024 player Dylan Raiola. He posted a picture to his Twitter page after a long process. USC already has Caleb Williams and five-star Malachi Nelson on the roster. The Cornhuskers brought in Matt Rhule as head coach, and landing Raiola would’ve worked wonders for a program looking for a new identity. Nonetheless, Raiola is headed to Georgia,… Read more »
From Raiola’s perspective, it makes sense. From USC’s perspective, it’s not a big loss. It’s a bigger gain for UGA than a loss for USC. Time will tell, of course, but if Nelson pans out, then their years would align, only one of them could start, and neither would stick around as a #2.
I’m glad Raiola’s done, assuming he sticks with GA and doesn’t bolt like he did with OHIO ST. NEB is the school that really needed Raiola, and the Huskers took it in the shorts here.
Where the Big Ten’s football schedule debate stands as ADs, officials meet this week Scott Dochterman (The Athletic) — Athletic directors and league officials will meet on Monday and Tuesday at Big Ten headquarters in Rosemont, Ill., and the league’s 2024 scheduling model will receive plenty of discussion. Although some officials are optimistic they’ll find clarity this week, it’s possible the decision gets kicked down the road yet again. • Protect 3: Three permanent protected matchups, with games against six of the remaining 12 Big Ten opponents one year and the other six the next. Every four years, each team would play… Read more »
Are usc and ucla participating in these B1G discussions?
Real reports coming out now that Oregon and UW are headed to big 10.
I knew the Oregon Nikes would weasel their way into the B1G. Udub is the afterthought, like the bruins.
Breaking: USC transfer Gary Bryant Jr. announces commitment to ORE
Ducks Wire — After a breakout season with 7 TDs as a sophin 2021, Bryant saw his role drastically diminish with the Trojans in 2022 after incoming transfers like Jordan Addison, Brenden Rice, and Mario Williams pushed him out of the rotation.
Now he will come to Eugene and compete with the likes of Traeshon Holden, Tez Johnson, and Kris Hutson for a starting spot alongside Troy Franklin.
yahoo.com
That choice makes zero sense. I thought the point of transferring was to attend a school where you were assured a starting position. Gary would not see the field at SC; does he really think the WR room in Oregon is not comparable? I would have thought that he would have wanted to go to a place like TCU where the O is run by a Mike Leach disciple (Sonny Dykes) and the starting WRs all graduated. Instead he goes to play for Bo Nix and a WR room that is mostly returning. I still remember the 6’5″ WR(whose name… Read more »
Speedster Gary Bryant Jr. Could Be Difference-Maker for Oregon
So says ScoopDuck
Looks like I got that one wrong! But, I figured if he cannot make it at SC (where a true frosh is probably going to start), he will struggle at other elite programs. But, may well be wrong.
I think you got it right! I just wanted to show the ORE fluff version.
A peek at things to come
Interesting prediction on the final CFP playoff in the present 4 team structure – two teams from the Big 10 and two teams from the SEC. Interesting take.
Former President Obama walks among a crowd at his daughter Sasha’s graduation ceremony at USC’s Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences this morning. (Grace Toohey / LAT)
What is her degree? Impressive that flew under the radar for 4 years.
Transferred from MICH. Sociology degree.
Which law school do you think she attends: Harvard, Yale, Columbia or Stanford?
I wonder if they teach law the same way I remember when you and I would have been going to law school? The Socratic method is what I think I remember it being called. Took a while to get used to.
My guess is it depends on what law school one attends. Critical Legal theory now dominates the elite schools and it has NOTHING to do with the Socratic Method. Critical theory is a combination of Post-Modernism and Marxism. Think of being taught law by a BLM rioter. Not too interested in open debate. What happened recently at both Stanford and Yale with Judges being shouted down are prime examples. A good source (far from perfect, but it is a solid introduction) is Stephen Hicks and his book “Explaining Post-Modernism.” I just listened to an hour lecture by Hicks on the… Read more »
most worthless major EVER! unless you are a community agitator, er, “organizer” in training.
ATL, Hence my assumption she is on her way to an elite law school. Then a job working for a well-connected non-for-profit and low to mid six figure salary to start.
Sounds pretty boring. Her older sis (24) is trying to make it as a screenwriter in Hollywood per reports. That’ll be interesting, I’m sure, if true. Tough area.
I’m guessing the writers’ strike is on her mind.
the budding screenwriter will also earn a huge salary, no doubt, similar to the way Chelsea Clinton was earning a starting six-figure salary with a broadcasting company with no qualifications other than having blue presidential DNA.
Nobody Knows Nothin’ Pac-12 TV negotiations have reached a critical stage as mood, and atmosphere grows more stressful and complicated Dick Harmon (Deseret News) — You’d have to think the Pac-12 TV negotiations are close to producing some breaking news, right? Not yet. Then why is there a distinct feeling that the Pac-12 is on the verge of a shakeup? There are morsels of news filtering down that you can hold up against the backdrop of the league’s statements of solidarity, patience and that a “consummation” of a TV deal is close at hand. You have denials from leaders at… Read more »
You have to figure if Kliavkoff can’t hold the PAC together due to an insufficient TV contract, then after 2024, the PAC will be no more. To the PAC presidents & boards, it matters not that they have put out a poor product for years to justify not getting the respect the other leagues are getting, it matters to what “they” think they deserve just being in the Big 5 conferences. This has been the PAC’s problem for a long time and it was just a matter of time for something like this to kick them in the butt. For… Read more »
Jamaica, I agree on Stanford and Cal. I just do not see Stanford keeping football – NIL football simply does not fit its academic image as an Ivy and football as a sport football does not fit its woke culture. I figured Stanford football was dead when they hired a white guy from a lower level team to head the program. I figured if the Stanford Administration intended to keep the program at an competitive level, it would have hired a black with NFL credentials.
I still think the most interesting story in sports in 2023-2024 will be the Pac. As Jamaica states below, the Pac leadership for well over a decade was just awful, both from the Presidents of the Universities to the Commissioner who they allowed to lead the conference. I really do not blame Scott for what he did – he told his employers what that they wanted to hear, not the truth. Again, going with Jamaica, Scott’s employers were idiots. And, now they are in a very tough place. The future of the Pac is really in the hands of Utah,… Read more »
I would think BYU and Utah in the same conference would add to the rivalry and peak viewers, at least all the Mormons in the US. Amazing to me but wouldn’t surprise me if the Bay schools drop big time sports. They like to think they are so Ivy League and scholarship athletes so beneath them.
Golden, Allen wrote in the recent past that BYU hates Utah and probably will seek to block its entry into the B12. I trust Allen’s knowledge on the topic a lot more than mine.
GT’s point is well-taken too. I’m no authority, that’s for sure.
And in this climate, it looks like things can change fast.
There is extreme hate between both schools, which is funny because many people attend both. But BYU is still pissed they were not invited to the PAC.
To me this is a bunch of noise and speculation. That said, I am loving it was all caused by USC leaving and allowing ucla to tag along. i listen to what Wilner has to say, This references The Deseret News and KSL. Both owned and operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints or the same thing as BYU. Since Utah joined the PAC BYU has been jealous of them and hated the PAC. So an opportunity to stir the pot is exactly what those two networks (always slanted news) have been waiting for. I… Read more »
Hi, Andy Staples (The Athletic) — This season will be the last run for TEXAS, OU, USC, and UCLA in their current conferences. Are any schools taking a win-now approach, essentially planning on dominating the conference on the way out the door? Which school has already shifted to building toward their new conference home? Out of the four, who’s about to face some harsh reality when they do switch? Lastly, whose fan base should be most excited about leaving? Staples — It’s safe to say that all four are taking a win-now approach. The attitude at OU is always win-now. TEXAS always wants… Read more »
DJ will be a solid addition. He plays nothing like his pops, he’s a guys who spends most of his time on the perimeter shooting 3’s. But he is a good defender who can defend multiple spots. He also doesn’t need the ball in his hands which will mesh well with Boogie, Collier, and Bronny.
It has been a long time since USC bb had such talent depth.
There are three McDonalds All Americans.
And there are 4 five star players with the others being good four star players.
It will be a one year trip with one and dones there.
Just hope they can be coached up and mesh as a team.
nice player.
in football, size matters. love the new d line.
in basketball HEIGHT matters. Rodman is 6 6.
USC needs a couple players outside the bell shaped curve. sc
He’s a decent-to-good, if not great addition. USC needs him, and especially his experienced aggressive style of play (like dad), but we still need another big guy to do some damage in the paint.
Evan (SC BBall’s most recent one and done) sure set the standard high for Collier and Bronny (both I assume one and done players) – in his only season, he lead SC to the Elite 8.
All this talk about Bronny being a one-and-done guy seems at least semi-hilarious.
From his ranking, tape, and stats, he’s obviously only a so-called one-and-done guy because of his amazing father, which is probably good for USC.
I believe the talk is more centered on his father wanting to play with him in the NBA. Even though it would probably be best for his son to stay in college at least two years.
LeBron likes Bronny’s groundbreaking decision to attend USC “This is an incredible thing,” LeBron said. “Unless it was one of my great-grandmothers or great-grandfathers that was way before my time, to my knowledge this is the first one out of the James gang to go to college. Obviously, his dad didn’t go to school, his mom didn’t go to college. I think my mom maybe stepped on campus a bit, a community college or something, but she had my little ass running around so she couldn’t spend much time in the classroom. She was 19 and I was 3. “My… Read more »
Kind of selfish for LeBron to want his son to play with him in the NBA–but sounds like his kid really needs 2-3 years of the college game before he hits the pros.
But I ‘ve always thought LeBron was selfish. He can’t consistently carry a team on his back like Kobe or Jordan did.
Evan is probably the best player SC basketball has ever had….
No doubt in my mind about that, but I’m certainly no Trojan hoops expert.
Evan was really something to behold in all facets of his dominating game during his one year at USC, and he immediately led USC to a Sweet Sixteen in 2021 after beating KU 85-51.
Per Mike Farrell, these are the Pac-12 football portal entries since Last Aug 1
CU: 59
ASU: 32
ORE: 30
CAL: 29
ARIZ: 24
WSU: 21
STAN: 18
USC: 18
UW: 17
UTAH: 16
UCLA: 9
OSU: 7
The raw numbers do not tell the tale. Counting graduating seniors, CU is replacing 71 players from its 2022 team. I do not think ANY team in history has attempted this much change. There is little question that Coach Prime will be upgrading the talent on the team (the 2022 CO team was just awful – they were the only team SC played post-Utah that could not score on our awful D). The issue is how replacing the entire team (which Prime is effectively doing) will go. No one has a clue yet. SC and Stanford are the best comparisons.… Read more »
Coach Prime is a phenomenon I haven’t quite seen before. Not even close, really. I wouldn’t have believed what he has done in such a short time had I not actually witnessed it. I’m not sure how he’ll turn out in the Pac-10/12, but CU fans’ response to this take-no-prisoners new guy has been a fantastic thing to see for college football in general. It’s hard to vote against Prime. He’s gonna have a lot of rope from here. But by 2025, I suspect the Buffs may be pretty darn good, maybe even by 2024. In CFB, it’s all about… Read more »
