Can Alex Grinch Possibly Still Keep His Job?

Alex Grinch’s disconcerting USC defense continues to fail badly. Can he pull it together?

Ryan Kartje (LA Times —  Alex Grinch shook his head as Pac-12 Network cameras zoomed in on his disbelief. It had been a long afternoon already. USC‘s defense was backed up against its own goal line, in desperate need of a stand, when a yellow flag suddenly went flying. USC players claimed there was a false start, but the refs saw otherwise. A penalty was called on the Trojans.

“Disconcerting signals,” the ref declared. California scored on the next play.

It was an unusual call, but a painfully fitting descriptor. When it came to USC’s defense, the last month had offered up one deeply disconcerting signal after another. The bad tackling in Tempe. A fourth-quarter collapse in Colorado. A breakout for Utah’s backup passer. In Berkeley, it was Jadyn Ott, Cal’s star running back, bursting untouched through one big hole, then another, racking up rushing yards at will while USC seemed helpless to stop him.

The Trojans still managed to escape Berkeley unscathed, high-tailing it out of the Bay with a 50-49 victory in hand. Their defense forced four turnovers and got critical stops when desperately needed. But the signals USC sent once again about the direction of its defense were too disconcerting to be brushed away with a win.

For the third time in five weeks, USC gave up more than 500 yards. USC had given up that many yards that many times in that short of a span only once before: last year, under Grinch.

The 6.9 yards per play USC gave up were a season high. Its pass rush, which looked strong not that long ago, couldn’t manage a sack. Ott finished with 153 yards after barely playing the second half after sustaining an injury.

And this all came against Cal? A team down to its third quarterback of the season? That’s the second backup in two weeks who conjured up a career-best game against USC.

Consider then what awaits the Trojans next on their schedule: two of the top-10 offenses in the nation, each with Heisman Trophy candidates at quarterback.

How Grinch’s defense fares during the most difficult stretch of USC’s schedule likely will determine his fate. Coach Lincoln Riley was asked Saturday if he thought any changes on defense, including to the staff, might be necessary ahead of that stretch.

Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza dives for a touchdown in front of USC defensive end Jamil Muhammad.

“I’m trying to beat Washington next week,” Riley said. “That’s my job, to get this team ready, sitting 5-1 in the best conference in America, to try and go win it. … Are there some things defensively that have to get better for us to do it? Yeah. There’s some things offensively that have to get better. There’s some things on special teams that have to get better. That’s the ebbs and flows of this season.”

The pitchforks are sure to be sharpened in the coming days, as frustrated fans call more fervently for Grinch’s firing. But it should be noted that USC’s defense did look better at times during the second half Saturday. Ott was mostly a nonfactor after the first quarter, while the Trojans forced the Bears into either a turnover or three-and-out on six of their 10 second-half drives.

“We just got to continue to trust in each other, trust ourselves and trust what we worked on all week,” linebacker Jamil Muhammad said. “We made plays when we needed to.”

But when Cal got the ball with a little more than three minutes remaining, the Bears had no issue making plays when they needed to, marching down the field on a nine-play, 79-yard touchdown drive. If not for a failed two-point conversion, the conversation Saturday night about USC’s defense could have been a lot different.

Still, the signs were there. If you were looking.

There’s work to be done to convert plays into points

USC coach Lincoln Riley stands on the sideline during Saturday's win over Cal.

When Eric Gentry made eye contact with the Cal tight end, he knew. The two-point conversion was coming his way.

The realization came at a critical moment. Cal had just scored with 58 seconds remaining, making it 50-49. An extra point would tie it, but the Bears were going for the win. So Gentry followed closely, pasted to his target, as Cal tried to force the two-point pass. Safety Jayden Smith was in equally strong position and knocked the pass thrown toward the receiver he was covering near Gentry. Cal’s attempt failed.

“We worked on that,” Gentry said of the play.

For USC, it was the first time in a while that a two-point conversion attempt went its way. Before Eric Gentry and the defense made that final stop, the offense botched two of its own two-point attempts. That’s after twice failing on two-point tries the previous week during its loss to Utah.

Down 28-23, USC opted for a two-point conversion attempt early in the third quarter to cut its deficit to a field goal. When that failed, it was all set to attempt another on its next touchdown, to take a 31-28 lead. But a holding penalty on Mason Murphy led Riley to change his mind. He sent kicker Denis Lynch out for an extra point, only for Lynch to shank the attempt.

Those two points would’ve been nice during the final, tense minutes.

Riley stuck with the run

USC running back MarShawn Lloyd carries the ball against Cal in the second half.

After MarShawn Lloyd fumbled last week during USC’s loss to Utah, Riley acknowledged he got gun shy with the ground game. The coach called just three more designed runs the rest of the second half, all three of which went to Austin Jones, and as a result, the offense lost its balance. He would do better, he said later, to stick with the run.

So when Lloyd started slowly Saturday, Riley followed through on his promise. He kept feeding him. Late in the fourth quarter, Lloyd had 16 carries, but for only 59 yards. Still, Riley didn’t shy away, hoping USC eventually would break through.

The game was tied at 43 late in the fourth quarter when Lloyd finally found daylight. He went 56 yards before he was brought down. One play later, Jones punched in the decisive score.

It wouldn’t go down as one of USC’s more efficient efforts on the ground. The Trojans’ 3.2 yards per rush weren’t exactly effective, while their 128 rushing yards were well below their season average.

But a more patient approach paid dividends. Lloyd’s big run was the big difference down the stretch Saturday.

“Be ready whenever my name is called, you know,” Lloyd said. “You gotta be able to block out the noise and just go on. What’s next? That’s the mentality that we gotta be on.”

Since our collapse against Tulane last year, they’ve managed to climb into the playoffs while we’ve managed to play our way out of the top 20.

A common theme at last years Cotton Bowl. An up and coming team with something to prove excited to be here and a team disappointed they are here instead of where they might have been.

First LRs salary is an important factor. At least it can be. Should LR continue next year and thereafter, dismissing the tremendous weaknesses of Grinch and others, coliseum attendance plus recruiting continue to slide further down to dangerous levels, a buyout becomes a strategy to save USC football. A 3 million / yr buyout versus a 10 million/ yr buyout are quite different. Whether it’s a fiscal concern or on principle, I see Folt digging in and wagging her finger, no way. Second, as previously mentioned, I believe LR will go the “add an analyst” route and keep “Big Score”… Read more »

The article mentions the disconcerting penalty and I couldn’t believe they (the refs) called that. In order to be called the defense is supposed to be mimicking the quarterback, they are allowed to call signals, so the call was a freebie from the refs. My recollection of football days tells me the offensive line is supposed to be impervious to anything outside of their quarterback’s voice. Instead of moving the Bears back because they moved, they moved forward because they reacted to defensive signals.

The relevance of his salary is just that, if he is not getting it done, there are many top coaches in the country that would be willing to collect that salary. Like it or not, when you are paid handsomely, it adds pressure and responsibility to get the job done.

Jack Sullivan has 1 tackle on the year. He had 38 last year and was honorable mention all big 10. He’s either hurt or in the Grinch dog house. Either way it is a giant waste of a guy who should be contributing. Add Barrs to that list as well. So many reasons to just let Grinch go. That guy could have went in draft last year, now what?

Riley seems to dismiss the apparent flaws in the Cal game suggesting they were “ebbs and flows” of football. Last week it was just a “spark away” from a win. Prior to that it was “outsiders setting the expectations.” Riley seems to have a ready excuse (as thin as they may be) for every failed performance. The expectations at SC are for NCs. That goes back to Howard Jones. McKay, PC and JRob all embraced and achieved that expectation. The we had “they fought like warriors” Helton, and now, “sparks and ebbs and flow” Riley. Riley is paid over $10mm… Read more »

The Collectives including alumni athletes will be pounding on her door to make changes. NIL and good coaching is how you get athletes. If bad coaching is keeping SC Collectives from getting talent they will tell her. LR will be forced to make changes.

I think Riley understands the expectations are for National Championships at SC otherwise he wouldn’t have taken the job here. It takes time to build a championship caliber roster. Kirby Smart didn’t win a NC in his second year at Georgia nor did Nick Saban in his second year at Alabama. Jim Harbaugh took 5 years to get Michigan to where they are and the Michigan alumni were getting sick of losing to Ohio State. Riley will make changes to the staff in the offseason. I’m sure Jen Cohen has already had that conversation with him and will provide him… Read more »

Well, true enough back in the days you mention. Notwithstanding that PC did it in three years…. Anyway, today we have the Transfer Portal (free agency) and financial inducements through NIL. Together these allow a team to vastly improve in one year, as Riley did in his first year, as well in his second. Note he added the Bilitnekov winner and a Heisman winner. Also Michigan State three years ago became a top team overnight. Let’s not forget that Riley had Grinch for three years at Oklahoma, before bringing him here. So in five years with pretty much more of… Read more »

When what you have are isolated moments of excellence is that from coaching or is it just dumb luck. We all know about the broken clock being right twice a day. If Riley uses these flashes of excellence as justification to keep Grinch then Riley’s judgement and decision making come into question. When defensive recruits are tough to get committed, when players decide to transfer, or when a defense is so hard to execute properly, it is a big sign changes need to happen. Grinch may find a home somewhere where he has to scale back his schemes simply because… Read more »

Or, Steveg, LR has this Air Raid mentality in his football blood in him and will never use enough resources to build a solid defense at the cost of his beloved offensive side. I am not so sure any top notch DC would want to work for a HC who is as offensive committed as LR. I think as crazy as this appears, even the Cat would have fired Grinch by now. This program is how many numbers away from having the worst defense in Div 1 CFB? The Portal was never created to be the main recruiting resource for… Read more »

In the end we do need to hope for a quality DC with or without Riley and I do believe Riley is not going anywhere soon. Yes my faith in LR has dropped, but we are in season 2 of his tenure. I agree about the portal, but USC has had their hands tied not being able to recruit like our competitors ($$) so the portal has given us some bodies to replace what Helton left us with.

I am not sure about what you mean in terms of “isolated moments of excellence.” Defensive players are expected to catch balls thrown right to them. That is not excellence – it is doing your job. Defenses are supposed to stuff run plays once in a while. Defenses are expected to break up a pass here and there without drawing a penalty. Excellence in defense is in the end result – do you get the stops consistently, do you hold the yardage and point totals down to give your offense a chance to win without being perfect? I don’t think… Read more »

Nobody said a word last season except to fire Grinch. Riley was a wiz and he had Caleb carry the team. Now he is getting a lot of heat, justifiably so, as his offense isn’t as volatile and the defense is worse. I have no reason I can think of why they cannot make the needed changes. We did see some great defensive plays against Cal, literally saving the game that the defense should have lost. Those are the moments I am refering to. Yes then they undo it with giving up big gains.

The answer should unequivocally be, “No!” Every now and then, a notion surfaces that an offense that is “up tempo” or “air raid like” is unattractive to defensive coaches, suggesting that no top notch DC would want to coach under LR, or that Grinch has a nearly impossible job. I’m here to debunk that notion about the 2023 USC Trojans. Reflecting on what my untrained eyes see on gameday, it seemed to me that the majority of the plays were CW looking at the sidelines and letting the play clock run down to the final seconds. I’ve never had the… Read more »

I said it last week Grinch needs to underthink the defense schemes. For instance when Cal’s running back broke through the line for a touchdown, he waited for the linebackers to move to the line. Once clear of the line of scrimmage there was nobody to stop him. Right of the eleven had taken themselves out of the play. If it were the first time, he should have adjusted, but instead he fails this way frequently. Anyone paying attention can diagnose this tell when he’s dealing defense and most teams exploit it. The defense wasn’t the only problem. Special Teams… Read more »

That is because, within 2 seconds of snapping the ball inside the 5 yard line, Caleb is running around at the 20 yard line looking for an open man downfield. Almost every time. Just stop it. If you are that bad at it, kick every time.

On Ott’s first run for a TD, the announcers pointed to the mistake by Shane Lee; Lee leaned too far to his left [ Ott’s right], and Ott was 2 arms-lengths clear of Lee. On Ott’s second TD, Tackett Curtis rushed into the middle of the line, instead of sliding parallel to the LOS.
