Will Lincoln Riley look to the portal for USC’s starting QB?
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — A year ago, with USC’s star quarterback off to the NFL, Lincoln Riley made his plans at the position abundantly clear. He would pursue a transfer quarterback to take the reins from Caleb Williams — someone like Cam Ward or Will Howard or another marquee passer eager for the opportunity. Perhaps he’d add two — one older, one younger.
Miller Moss, the longtime backup, had different plans. In his first start, Moss threw for six scores and led the Trojans to a triumphant victory in the Holiday Bowl. So Riley, seeing no other choice, pivoted and put his faith in Moss.
That succession plan ultimately produced mixed results. While Ward and Howard led their new teams to 10-win seasons, Moss was benched by early November, replaced by Jayden Maiava, the Nevada Las Vegas transfer brought in to be his backup. Now Moss is in the transfer portal, Maiava is penciled in as starter and Riley finds himself back in a similar spot, with an uncertain future at football’s most important position.
Riley is projecting confidence in Maiava, who led the Trojans to two wins over their final three games. “I think he’s going to continue to progress and get better and better,” Riley said Wednesday.
But with the transfer portal set to open Monday — and given how a similar scenario went last season — might Riley decide to put his trust in a transfer quarterback instead?
Riley confirmed Wednesday that USC plans to add a quarterback from the portal, given that two — Moss and third-stringer Jake Jensen — opted to transfer. But the hope, he said, was for a new passer to “provide some depth in that room.” Presumably, that means behind Maiava and five-star freshman Husan Longstreet, the crown jewel of USC’s 2025 recruiting class.
“We obviously have a ton of confidence in both [Jayden] and Husan and what that room has a chance to become,” Riley said. “We’re going to put a lot of emphasis, a lot of reps, a lot of time into those two guys. On top of their skill sets, I just love the way those two guys are wired. We obviously have to get someone else in some role to fill out a room and make sure we’re doing right by the team. But if you told me next year we’re going in with those two guys, like I feel like we will, I’m very very excited about it.”
Adding a top-flight quarterback transfer isn’t just a matter of selling him on Riley or dangling a starting spot. It also means paying top dollar in a competitive market, where the best quarterbacks are commanding name, image and likeness packages that reach seven figures. Any NIL money spent on a quarterback means less to spend on other positions in the portal.
Complicating the situation even further is the fact that Maiava’s representation will want to renegotiate his NIL deal after his three-game audition. And considering the coach’s public votes of confidence, it’s safe to assume Maiava has the leverage to command a sizable raise.
It’s not as if the market is bursting with top-line quarterbacks, either. Texas A&M’s Connor Weigman and Oklahoma’s Jackson Arnold are both former five-star prospects who were replaced after less-than-stellar starts at their respective schools. Others have experience: Fresno State’s Mikey Keene started 21 games the last two seasons, while Liberty dual threat Kaidon Salter started 29 after beginning his career as a four-star signee at Tennessee.
More big-name passers could enter the portal between now and the end of December when it closes. So far, though, there are no obvious starting options to pursue. Even as USC fans call for a new quarterback, the shrewd move for Riley may be standing pat with the one he’s got while developing the freshman behind him.
After all, Maiava made major strides during his first season at USC. His arm talent and his athleticism never were a question. But since starting work with a private coach, the sophomore’s footwork and mechanics improved considerably. So too has his understanding of protections and other complexities of the position.
Against Notre Dame, the top-rated pass defense in college football, Maiava threw for 360 yards — almost 100 more than any other quarterback who faced the Fighting Irish. Seven of his 27 completions in USC’s season finale went for more than 20 yards, as Maiava aired it out fearlessly.
It was “the best offensively we played all year,” Riley said afterward. But two late pick-sixes sealed the Trojans’ loss and stuck with Maiava, who looked crestfallen in the postgame press conference.
“There’s a lot to learn from, for sure, within the past three games I played,” Maiava said. “I would say, can’t turn the ball over in big moments. I let the team down, especially the seniors. But I’m grateful for the opportunity that coach gave me.”
It won’t be the last chance he gets from Riley, either. And in the moment, the coach leaned over to his quarterback in support.
“You were also a big part of why we were in that game,” he told Maiava. “Remember that.”

Is it still the weakness of USC NIL bag offers or the disenchantment of Lincoln Riley’s leadership causing these player decisions of not signing on NSD & leaving for the Portal? What LR has is a talented group of defensive coaches and little else (OK, a good RB position coach too). How much improvement the defensive side of the team will be in the 2025 season is about all there is to hope for. You can’t wave a magic wand over incoming freshmen & the intergration of one year Portal signees to make too big of a change for a… Read more »
The Brat isn’t much of a leader. I don’t see many people wanting to follow the guy.
And his decision-making is unfortunately highly questionable, as revealed in many different areas of his program too numerous to mention.
Hope we don’t lose more coaches, except for maybe two on offense. Nothing comes easy for the Trojans nowadays.

I admit that I’m an optimist but I think USC is closer to turning the corner then going down the drain: lost to Michigan by 3 in the last two minutes; lost to Minnesota by 7 ( did USC really lose this game…I still don’t think they have found the football on tape in order to reverse the call that was made to gift the game to Minnesota; lost to Penn State by 3 – last minute interception; loss by 1 to Maryland (okay, this was a bad loss and I actually flew out to this game) loss to ND… Read more »
I hate to rain on all the optimists out there. It is not a matter of not enough NIL, not enough talent. We have a HC that is pure and simple mentally unhinged. Examples: Playing the #1 and 3 pass defenses in the country and calls 65% and 75% pass plays. Refuses to run the ball when he has an NFL quality RB and run blocking is what his OL does best. Has the lead with less than 5 minutes in the game and the ball and calls pass plays that run no time off the clock. Does actually run… Read more »
Hey Golden Trojans,
Totally understand the frustration and even agree with your takes. But, the optimism comes into play because I think Riley grows from these losses and can come up with one or two plays to turn these types of games into wins. Riley is definitely a slow learner as we saw how long it took to fire Grinch and to replace Moss. But, eventually the light came on and I think it will happen again. ✌️
Ya, it’s so great having a slow learner as USC’s head football coach. What a treat. What light came on? He had no choice but to finally fire Grinch. It had nothing to do with a smart decision or any intelligence. Miller Moss actually regressed under The Brat’s coaching, and never had any protection, so now he’s gone. Some QB Whisperer. Rah! The Brat has somehow managed to create a USC identity and culture that is defined by 4th Q collapses, horrible play-calling and plans, mediocre, hole-filled recruiting and an antagonistic, paranoid relationship with both fans and the press. The… Read more »
For the USC football program under Lincoln Riley to ever course correct, Riley would need to transform himself entirely on almost every responsibility he has to be a top 10 head coach. That’s a big ask even if he agreed to it. The idea of splitting said responsibilities with a co-head coach or GM still leaves an incomplete solution. Figureheading Riley and handing over the program’s moving parts to a competent former winner ( ie CPC, Entz ) or an up and comer, would still be incomplete because Riley doesn’t participate in meeting donors frequently or walking on top HS… Read more »
USC (6-6) will face Texas A&M (8-4) in the 33rd SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas at 7:30 p.m. PT on Friday, Dec. 27 on ESPN.
It’s been a while, I saw USC playing at UNLV stadium in, I think, what was Pete Carroll’s first bowl game. At USC the Trojans were lethargic and uninterested except (as I remember) Troy Polamalu We were out played by Utah (before recent meetings) And Pete said he trusted his team to not party the night before. Oh well after that bowl game, the Trojans improved greatly, one can only hope better days are on the horizon.
At least they get to play in Allegiant. Should be another lethargic SC team, have fun on the strip boys, be safe, don’t get arrested.
When I was a first-year grad student in the USC School of Business in the Fall of 1977, USC played A&M in the Astro Bluebonnet Bowl in the Houston Astrodome. My classmate Rob Hertel threw 4 TD passes as SC crushed A&M. Several players on that team returned the next year as Paul McDonald replaced the graduated Hertel at QB. SC won the national championship in 1978. Hoping for similar results this time around.
ASU coach Kenny Dillingham sure sounds competitive and on target on the Playoff Selection Show. No wonder the Sun Devils have so quickly developed a winning culture.
Coaching is like being a right tackle in the sense that you can be developed…….but…..if you’re not 6 foot 5 inches or bigger and have some quickness, mental ability, arm length, etc etc….all the development in the world is not going to make you a right tackle. For a coach if you don’t have relationship skills, intelligence, decision making ability etc etc…….all development in the world will not make you a coach.
You either have it or you don’t.
Dillingham is off the Lanning tree….you can see the determination in the eyes of either one.
Just my take.
I’d much rather play for Lanning or Dillingham than Riley. Bummer.
Dilly Dilly coached an amazing game vs SC last year if not for the heroics of Caleb, we lose. Yes, the Grinch D was a sieve but Dilly showed everyone how to score an easy 40 with quick pitches to the edge, wheel routes and simple trick plays.
Good thing for college football he left Oregon (will be next HC when Lanning leaves), it would be a Pete/Norm type situation. Unbeatable for years.
Jordan Addison catches a 50-yd TD from Sam Darnold to make it 7-7 vs the Falcons at the end of the 1st Q.
Sam looks banged up … ankle must be really hurting. Having such a great season hope injury doesn’t ruin it. Big payday at end of season too.
College Football Playoff bracket, rankings Yahoo Sports Staff — After four-plus months of on-field results and politicking by coaches, athletic directors and fans, the College Football Playoff selection committee announced Sunday the 12-team field. The biggest question on Sunday was who would earn the final at-large spot between Alabama and SMU? The committee put SMU (11-2) in the field one night after it lost 34-31 to Clemson on the last-second field goal in the ACC championship game. Alabama (9-3) is out after not making its conference title game. That decision will be debated for a long time. As for the… Read more »

I would say Penn St and Texas have the “easiest” road to the semis. Glad to see Bama shut out. You can’t sit home with 3 loses and expect to get in just by your brand. I’m liking Oregon-Texas and Georgia-Penn St in the semis and Ducks over Dawgs as well. Some fun games coming. Love the 12 team format over 4 any day.
If I had one wish for Riley it would be to skip getting a quarterback in the portal and concentrate on building a line. It doesn’t matter who is in the quarterback room if the offensive line room is devoid of talent. Looking back on the successful teams USC has had and you see a bevy of pro prospects on the offensive line. Riley had the Heisman winning number one draft pick quarterback in his quarterback room and couldn’t beat his two rivals. He should have learned from this experience. Riley is like a guy in a cruise ship buffet… Read more »
Agree…..as has been mentioned many times on this site our line may not have been that bad if we were running 60/40. We ran for a good average per carry. The linemen were big and strong. Give the DL something to think about.
This brat cannot give up the idea of the slinging QB.
Sadly, I think you may have hit on the perfect nickname for Lincoln Riley — “The Brat”. I think it just might stick, don’t you?
We called Clay Helton “The Cat”.
Now we have “The Brat”.
“He’s the guy who owns gold-plated sockets without a wrench to turn them.” Classic description RialtoTrojan.
The Brat …perfect
It seems to fit. Not too cruel either.
Just condescending enough to get the point across.
The Brat better figure it out. After Tulane and then 2023 disaster, this year was suppose to be a redemption season for the Brat’s rep … it wasn’t. He had had even a worse season and in the all important 1st Big 10 season. So embarrassing. Really losing to Maryland!
So is next year the LR redemption tour? it better be.
I seriously doubt USC will be that good next season. This team is losing a lot of players, has some big holes, and we just lost a great LB coach too.
We open with MO ST and GA SOUTH (The Cat returns!) Waiting to open with LSU was sure a lot more fun!
Road games
at Oregon … can’t win at Maryland not winning there
at ND … well you know
at Illini … return complete team
at Nebby … their Super Bowl
See 3 losses there if not 4 and have lost all confidence in LR after complete whiff this season
USC could also lose to IOWA and MICH, even MICH ST.
Not Iowa … they lose 20 starters or something like that and are a miserable road team and beyond miserable if out side a few hours travel
LR loses to that crap, he should be tarmaced
As a duel fan…..thanks for giving the Illini some respect…..you are correct….just about the entire team returns from 9-3.
We’ll see……and I expect I’ll try to be at the game.
That has a Michigan or Minnesota type loss written all over it
Low scoring close loss … fans storm field afterwards
SC brand still huge, reality not so much
Cannot believe the upper brass cannot not be all in on largest lasting legacy of the school. And huge money maker to boot when done right. Pete packed the Coli from mid 2002 to late 2009.
Figure it out already
My grandaughter is going to Illinois. We are planning on going to USC/Illinois. Great stadium and crown, we went to the Minn game.
Hope she has a great time. I sure did about 55 years ago. The improvements since the old days are just astounding. It is like going to Vegas today vs 55 years ago…..
Seriously I don’t think anyone who is a regular on this blog feels the team will be any better. All the while any chance of recruits respecting the USC brand will distance themselves further and Lincoln the “brat” will become a woke HC at press conferences.
The Brat versus The Cat, can’t miss TV!
Wanna bet lol … actually have seen the Cat at the Masters two years in a row. No doubt part of the agent kickback scheme with Augusta members Haden and Swann (how the hell those two grifters became members is a wtf). My son gave him the courtesy of a ‘Fight On Coach’, I couldn’t do it. But did give Swannie the courtesy, due to amazing playing career, when ran into him by 1st tee last year.
He was pleasantly surprised.
Sarcasm is hard to convey in writing. 😉
My Stink’n Lincoln Think’n is a bit cruel. The Brat has that air of neurosis about it which I like. Cat to Brat! Oh my USC. Will you ever get it together?
I like it. Brat works in two ways if he’s being stubborn he’s a brat. If he’s being all show and no tell he’s a Brat (wurst) as in oversized hot dog.
The Brat it is! illinoisusc gets the credit. ✌
I’ll believe it when I see Lincoln Riley the HC of a physically bruising heavyweight program. It just isn’t in his DNA no mater what he says. I am so put off by the fact he is no closer to having a Big Ten competitive program than he was 3-years ago when he knew it was coming. He will never bow down to a General Manager type mentor because simply he doesn’t have to. He’s got the USC administration by the balls and they all know it. It’s either pay him off or deal with his ego & stubborness all… Read more »
Do you think USC has better talent and depth now compared to 3 years ago? I think they had enough talent to have gone 11-1 maybe even 12-0 this season. That is if they had a decently functional HC. Does Indiana or Illinois or Iowa have more talent than USC? I don’t think so. It all comes down to a HC that doesn’t follow basic football fundamentals. A GM would be great for him if the contract would allow it.
4 of the 5 conference champs (Power 4 plus Boise) ran the ball at least 55% while 4 of 5 of the losers ran the ball less than 47%. The losers number is skewed by trying to make a come back late. Some things never change. If you want to win championships in football you have to run the ball. Maybe the USC HC would like to get an ACC job. They are just as pass happy as he is.
Exactly, We passed the ball quite a bit back in our glory days of CPC but……they were so terrified of Reggie Bush it was child’s play. There were several games I recall that looked like we were on the verge of defeat and in the last quarter we just ran it down their throats to score. Oregon can pass the ball extremely well……because Dillon can stand back there in most cases due to the D linemen having to account for the speed and elusiveness of James and Whittington. We had Marks and linemen that were suited to running the ball……but… Read more »
I wouldn’t say USC just threw the games away. I would say USC just crumbled. When the going got tough in the 4th Q, the Trojans folded. No winning culture at USC these days.
Someone else here addressed this Trojan habit of folding in the 4th Q and defined it as our “identity”.
They are correct. USC’s true team “identity” this season was to play hard but collapse when the game was on the line, which is why we are 6-6, going to a bad bowl, and signing “meh” recruiting classes when we should be signing the best.
Sad
So today we wait around to find out which crappy bowl game we will attend, without our best player (the Wood Man). I can’t wait.
How about a bowl of Frosted Flakes, they’re GRRREAT! Especially on a cold morning in El Paso! 🙄
No Marty Robbin’s Invite … that thing has been a disaster
1990 – A stoned out Toddy M freaks out on Larry Smith during a crappy loss to Sparty when people actually watched the Sun Bowl
1998 – Hackett gets run over by TCU, painful to watch, as Chris Claiborne after post season awards dinners ballon him to John Drake playing middle linebacker
2013 – or whenever Goatboy Kiffy was there getting drubbed by GeoTech. He quits on a team that quit on him and Kennedy Pola punches him to boot
No Sun Bowl ever
Satisfying that 2 of the 3 destination conferences for the dissolved P12 were won by former P12 teams. Never had a horse in the race in the ACC though.
Wow – great football games tonight. Texas/Georgia and SMU/Clemson. Oregon looks beatable but they seem to always find a way to win. Can’t wait until USC joins the party! ✌️
How many years above ground do you have? 🤔
Pardon, I meant to say, ”how many years above ground do you have left?”
I tried another way to express the hopelessness of having Linkin’ running our program. Maybe a swing and a miss on my part…🙄
Oregon goes undefeated and beats hapless Penn St.
Their defense looks beatable but who is going to stop their offense. They are loaded with speed.
Since USC is not involved I hope they beat the snot out of the SEC.

Got to hand it to Sark……need a yard……have the QB stand over center with a wide space between his legs……the snap goes to the halfback 3 yards behind the QB……QB pushes into the line and most including the LB’s cannot determine where the ball is…..attracts just about the entire defense…….the half back with the ball goes around the tackle and makes the first down.
Creative and smart.
Sark’s college football life was completely changed by Rescue God Nick Saban, who taught him what it takes to win. Sark didn’t know how to do this at either UW or USC, plus he had personal problems.
But give credit to Saban, who also salvaged Kiffin.
As you know, it’s not just a bunch of entertainment, fun or discipline……it’s about building better people…..turning boys into men and in Sark’s case even at a later age. Happy that his personal life seems to be good now. Nothing worse than a marriage that is not working.
It’s another win….that gets very little press.
I give him credit for his recovery and post-drunk accomplishments. And I was not in his corner when he left.
He also did well as an OC in the NFL for a short time. He’s a lot better now than when he was at USC. He’s only 50, so Sark should be in his wheelhouse.
It’s gonna be really fun to watch and see who are the final playoff teams, where they are seeded, and who wins it all.
Was fired by the Falcons hence the short time … he was a disaster in the NFL.
The crafty agent talking his big client, Saban, into taking these no talents and life time losers, into a career rehab saved both. Though it will still end badly, it’s what they are.
Sark is now #5 in Playoff position. Damn good actually. What are you gonna do when TEXAS beats CLEM on Dec. 20?
I’ve never known another person who literally hated Kiffin and Sark, or any coaches for that matter, as much as you do. You take the cake.
Go Sark! 😂
Allen, Saban hired both PC’s OCs for what they already learned from PC & Norm Chow. His offense was considered conservative on the rushing side and little imagination in the passing game. Saban gave the two a 2nd chance but for what they could give him in return. You look at what both are doing with their offenses today and it looks darn similar to what they were calling at USC. Let’s give credit where it is really due?
The legend and reach of the Pete Carroll era lives on. We had it so good for so long.
Now still in the wasteland trying desperately to become relevant again. Keep the Faith. ✌
I think it’s a bit quid pro quo. Kiff and Sark taught Bama about modern offenses, but Saban taught them to grow up and about running a complete program.
Saban won titles with 5 different OCs … Gomer could been OC there.
Kiffy and Suck run same crap everyone runs then choke at the end. Same as always.
No fade route ?
You have to be an offensive genius to call for those.
Exactly lol
I like Riley’s persona, but Long Ball Riley is an “Alternative” thinking
coach; that is to say, if you need a critical 2 yards to keep the ball, he
just might go long. Its like an Alternative MD. You go to a MD and he says
you need a very difficult liver transplant; but you can go to a alternative
MD and he might suggest the easier kidney transplant.
LAT Letters to Sports: USC fans reaching their breaking point with Lincoln Riley 1) Lincoln Riley: worst coach ever! 2) I figured out the reason for the USC football team’s poor performance this season. One of the most amazing CFB stories of the year has to be often beleaguered ASU under 34-year-old second-year head coach Kenny Dillingham (a 2012 Sun Devil grad) who came to Tempe in 2023 from ORE where he was the OC/QB coach for the Ducks for one year under Dan Lanning.
10-2 ASU leads 10-2 IA ST (many thought Matt Campbell might succeed Gentleman Clay) 10-7 in the Big 12 Championship game as the 1st Q comes to an end.
ASU was predicted to finish last in the Big 12 preseason media polls.
All I know is when he was at Oregon he had that offense clicking.
An offensive mind that really knows how to coach.
Ashton Jeanty ran for a spectacular 209 yds on 32 carries vs a tough UNLV rushing defense last night giving BOISE ST the Mountain West Conference Championship with a 21-7 victory.
Does Jeanty, a JR, have a legit shot at taking the Heisman from CU two-way superstar Travis Hunter who is considered the favorite?

I know we focus on NIL, it’s huge, but perhaps a bit too much, discounting other factors a 4-5* kid considers when picking a school. These kids want to win, want to be fundamentally progressed, and as a QB with a high ceiling (NFL chops), wants reasonable protection. It’s rare these days that there isn’t a daily / weekly national press article on LR, his exhaustive shortcomings, passivity, and yes the UCF and Chicago Bears theories. This information isnt vacuumed like the past. These kids read them or their agents do, perhaps as negotiable leverage. One thing we know is… Read more »
I think USC will be fine at QB assuming Maiava remains healthy, and Longstreet lives up to his potential. It looks like SC is headed to the Las Vegas Bowl against Texas A&M. If so, I hope for similar results to 1977 when USC had a disappointing season after being ranked #1 after 4 games into the season and then crushed A&M in the Bluebonnet Bowl behind 5 TD passes by my classmate Rob Hertel.
It doesn’t matter who is in the QB room. If the HC can’t function USC is not winning. The HC already drove off the #2 QB in the portal.
Jen Cohen needs to organize an intervention with LR. She should gather with USC’s best sports psychologist, maybe Pete Carroll and maybe even LR’s wife for a sit down with LR. We have all chewed over his many dysfunctions. It’s not like he’s a rookie Pop Warner coach. He should know better. So why is he doing this? Has he become; burned out, complacent, unmotivated, comfortable with the millions and wants to get fired and return to Texas, so burdened by the mega contract that he feels he has to do it all and failing it all. Everyone sees the… Read more »
