Dark-Horse Teams Who Could Make the College Football Playoff in 2020 (seven teams) Bleacher Report — OREGON DUCKS The Pac-12 season will officially start on Nov. 7, and conference favorite Oregon kicks off its schedule at home against Stanford. The Ducks checked in at No. 9 in the first AP poll before inactive teams were removed, with USC (No. 17) and Utah (No. 22) the only other Pac-12 teams to crack the Top 25. With the conference set to play a seven-game schedule, including the conference championship game, the Pac-12 faces an uphill battle to secure a playoff berth. There are a… Read more »
OHIO ST AD Gene Smith told reporters Monday that the Big Ten currently is not planning to fine head coaches who don’t wear masks or don’t keep a mask on for the entirety of games, saying such decisions were being left up to individual universities at the moment. “I think we’re going to be fine,” he said. “We’re going to be sensitive to the moment. There are going to be times when Ryan Day is in the middle of a call and his mask is down, and we have someone to remind him to put it back up. Kind of like that… Read more »
The Pac-12 has established cancellation and tiebreaker policies for its virus-truncated football season. The conference announced that a minimum threshold of at least 53 scholarship players must be available for any team to participate in a game.
The game would be rescheduled or declared a no contest if a school elects not to play the game shorthanded.
The Pac-12′s seven-game, conference-only season is scheduled to start Nov. 7 and the conference is taking potential cancellations into consideration in its tiebreaker policies.
Determination of Championship Game Host
The home team in the Pac-12 Championship Game will be determined by the record in all Conference games. In the event of a tie, the following procedures will be applied to determine the home team:
Wow no contest? I wonder if that rule could be used strategically to hurt a team? It should be a forfeit if a team cannot quarantine their players well enough. I don’t think a no contest helps the league at all.
ND is gonna get smoked bad against #1 CLEM in South Bend on Nov. 7. That’s why they have odds lower than USC, even with such a short schedule.
SC has a better chance of making the playoffs than 4-0 ND? Even if SC were to go undefeated its cream-puff schedule won’t qualify them for the playoffs
You’re probably right LJ, but anyone, like myself, who watched parts of ND barely beating LOUIS in South Bend this weekend, 12-7, was looking at an Irish team that would get absolutely demolished by ALA, CLEM, and probably OHIO ST, even though the Bucks have yet to play.
ND just looked poor, regardless of how hard Brian Kelly tried to pump up the volume on their desultory performance. If USC isn’t better than the ND team I saw on Saturday, I’ll be very disappointed.
Here in NY Metro area the local media just today starting to float the idea of “What can the Jets get for Darnold in a trade “.
The Jets are just SO bad. I pray Darnold, who also surely needs a reboot, gets unloaded to any other team. With his NFL luck so far, Sam will remain stuck with the Jets and whomever they pick as their next hapless coach.
Dallas needs a QB. Andy Dalton looked awful last night. Just putrid. The Dallas O Line is in bad shape (injuries and retirements). Dalton is not mobile at all. Sam would be a perfect fit for the Dallas O. The issue is how much would NY want for him? I would think a 3rd round pick plus taking over his contract should do it.
I would love to see Darnold in Dallas. Jerry Jones is known for doing wild things personel-wise and the overly friendly owner likes to overpay his players. I say overpay Sam now! Jones is desperate. How they handle their QB situation is incredibly interesting to me.
Harvey Hyde is getting more “get off my lawn” everyday. But for the most part the guy is right.
Initially, Harvey was totally wrong on Graham Harrell and he didn’t understand why Helton’s move to Harrell might be a terrific development. But he later changed his tune after Harrell came aboard, so good for him.
18% is way too generous. They’re just being diplomatic. I think we have no chance to make the playoff. Schedule is just way too soft and one big game (win over Oregon in Championship game) cannot launch a team into the top 4 with the existing bias against the Pac overall.
I think 2% is WAY more like it. USC can still have a pretty darn good, even terrific 9-0 season. It’ll take a lot though, but not having to play ALA, ND and ORE and UW (during the reg season) is quite a bonus.
So what are the chances USC goes 9-0 with no ugly wins (as so often happens under Gentleman Clay)? I think 2% is about right.
Undefeated? Longer than that, but at least we are being talked about. It beats no football at all. We all know our shortcomings by now, this year will come down to how much influence our assistants and staff have on the team. If it’s significant, maybe we can be 9-0. If it’s the usual, that ship has already sailed.
Am I missing something? SC has six games on schedule, and if they win the South they get a seventh game. 7-0 with only one real quality win is not going to get us into the playoff in any world (sorry, ASU may be a tough game for us, but a good result there will not qualify as a quality win from a national perspective). If you don’t go the playoff, you can’t go 9-0. Take Notre Dame as an example. ND just climbed up one spot in both polls to #3 after struggling to beat a hapless Louisville team.… Read more »
USC, and every Pac-12 school, has seven conference games, whether they play for the championship or not. The best in the north will play the best in the south for the title in their #7 games, but all the remaining teams play a seventh game within the conference from the opposing Division, though that match-up has not been determined yet.
Yeah, but if you go to the conference championship game, that’s your 7th game, right? You don’t get an 8th game if you go to the conference championship game, correct?
You would get an eighth game in a bowl after you win the Pac-12 championship. If you’re in the right bowl and win it, you play for the national championship in game #9, making it conceivable a Pac-12 team could literally go 9-0. Hugely unlikely (hence my 2% designation), but possible.
Yeah, ok. You only play a second bowl game and can go 9-0 if you are in the playoff. If you don’t make the playoff, you play your 7 games and a bowl game (8 games). All I’ve said is there is nothing in my mind that USC can do in its 7 games (including a Pac12 title win) that can get it into the playoff over other one-loss teams that have played 12 games. A one-loss ND even gets in ahead of us.
@Rock2112 As I’ve said in another post, ND’s gonna get beat bad by CLEM on Nov. 7 in South Bend. Nobody is gonna want to see that same ND team in a playoff with CLEM also in it. It would make no sense to set up that match-up. ND has a tough schedule this year, which you think would normally help them, but because usually brutal CLEM is on it, I think a bad loss to CLEM at home would knock them out of the playoffs if a big brand very impressive USC team went undefeated, and didn’t ever win… Read more »
Allen, I totally agree that ND will be hammered by Clemson (although I disagree that ND has a tough schedule — that is their only truly tough game). And I am not saying ND will make the playoff — but I am saying that even if ND is handled convincingly by Clemson, a one-loss ND team would be ranked above an undefeated USC team given the way they have been treated in the polls thus far. It is ridiculous that ND climbed one spot to #3 after struggling to beat a 1-4 Louisville team in South Bend. Just absurd. But… Read more »
It’ll be very fun to watch how things shake out. It could turn out to be a pretty amazing season after all.
Coming off a disillusioning 8-5 record, I’ll be perfectly happy this season if USC just gets into a good bowl game against a big-name opponent and wins the game.
Yep — I am happy to have football, and even happier to have Trojan football.
Rock2112 – The teams that have not played are going to move up the polls rapidly if they simply remain undefeated. The SEC teams are all losing games to each other and it is very possible, maybe even likely, that no team in the Power 5 has less than 2 losses, except for Ohio State, Clemson and Alabama, who go undefeated. Look at it this way, Notre Dame, BYU and Cincinnati are undefeated with really weak schedules and they are ranked #4, #12 and #9 in country. That speaks to the fact that undefeated teams, even with weak schedules, are… Read more »

#USC HC Clay Helton announced (redshirt JR) OLB Juliano Falaniko (6-4, 235) suffered a non-surgical but severe ankle sprain that is expected to keep him out for weeks.
Looking good!
No USC athletes tested positive for the coronavirus among 1,327 tests since the last report, the sixth consecutive week with no positive tests, the university announced on Saturday.
Aaron Rodgers had a horrible showing in yesterday’s 38-10 loss to Tom Brady and Tampa Bay:
Rodgers completed only 16 of 35 passes for 160 yds with no TDs, two picks and a passer rating of 35.4 – the second-worst rating of his career, after a 34.4 showing at Buffalo in 2014.
Trojan Ronald Jones had a big day for the Bucs on the other hand: 23 carries/113 yds/2 TDs.
On the season so far, Jones is looking strong and has 97 carries (5th) for 472 yds (3rd), 3 TDs (tied for 13th) and a 4.9 ypc (12th).
Allen, it is funny what I remember of Jones. It is one play in the Coliseum against Oregon. I think his last year was Sam’s last year. The O Line was just awful (it would get worse the next year with Toa at center). It was a goal line play. The OL blocked no one. Jones got the ball and had two defenders almost immediately on him – he scored anyway. It was an amazing play. The two defenders were virtually unblocked and Jones beat both of them.
Jones is running incredibly hard lately. As they say, “He’s out there with his hair on fire.” Love to see this from this very hard worker.
It’s just great to see him having a strong year. He had bad hands at USC and I hope he’s improved there, which would keep him in the League.
The Yahoo story, like most Yahoo stories, seems like BS. Ferentz gets paid to win football games, period. I can’t imagine any scenario where he refused to play black players who could help him achieve that goal. This doesn’t pass the smell test. Why did he utilize the black players that were big contributors? Was he only racists against certain players?
Sounds like a money grab. After all, calling someone a racists is the worst accusations you can make in today’s America.
Former black Iowa players demand $20 million, Kirk Ferentz’s job after alleged racial issues
Yahoo Sports
Hard to believe. Ferentz has been around to long and has way more black players that back him. The kids these days act so entitled, they need cry rooms next to the locker rooms when their feelings get hurt. Perhaps Ferentz just plain didn’t like the kid or their attitude and he did make the mistake of letting it show. Doesn’t mean he is racist. Have these players considered taking any responsibility for their actions?
I bet if you got to some of these players who are suing, you would find some political action/legal group behind it. Unionization, paying for player likeness in CFB, continual racial accusations…. pretty soon you will have the tail wagging the dog in CFB.
The liberals will destroy everything they touch. Sometimes you just got to leave things alone.
Jamaica, Totally agree. Sports are now part of the social progressive agenda. One guy, Kapernick, made a fortune off this con. Look for a lot of others to try to do the same. Kapernick is now far more a political figure than a sports figure. Same to with LeBron James. I now change the channel any time a LeBron commercial comes on.
Never say “never”. I see our chances being 18%, and so in my mind, we have a shot. Remember all the teams not listed, we are rating better than them.
With all the foot dragging the league (read Larry Scott) has done, an unbeaten PAC 12 team can say, “Here we are!” But the committee will say, ” So? “
The winner of the Pac-12 would have to be a totally dominant, soul-crushing team to get in on seven games. I give the Pac-12 a 2% chance, as I have stated before. Basically, we need a miracle out here.
Strength of conference schedule alone has any PAC-12 team at a disadvantage compared to the other 4-conferences.
Actually, I don’t think the SEC has anymore than maybe two good teams, and one just beat the other. Florida, maybe, but after that they have nothing. The ACC is a one horse show. Big10 we will have to see, and same for the PAC12. Big12 to me has 3 teams competing for a title, but nothing of real strength. That 18% chance for USC to make the playoff looks better every week. All they have to do is play the damn games and play to win.
Clemson is a lock, SEC champ is a lock, 1 loss Big10 champ is a lock, it doesn’t leave much room for PAC 12. It’s best hope is to have undefeated USC play an undefeated Oregon.
My path for SC to get in would be Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson to go undefeated and every other Power 5 team to have 2+ losses.
A SEC, Big Ten and maybe ACC team with one loss would trump an undefeated PAC-12 team just by the strength of their conferences alone. A Big 12 undefeated team would get the nod over a similar PAC-1 team and has in the past. The PAC-12 football conference is its own worst enemy in having too many poorly supported football programs that lose too much.
