Lincoln Riley’s first USC signing day – here’s what to expect
The Trojans could be in for a quiet or wild week of recruiting news as their new coach has plenty of work to do

Adam Grosbard (OC Register) — As the calendar turns to the early signing period on Wednesday, USC football will be a wild card to watch.
As of Tuesday afternoon, new head coach Lincoln Riley and the Trojans had only four high school prospects committed and one transfer in their 2022 class. The group is ranked last in the Pac-12 and 102nd nationally, per 247Sports.com.
But USC still has a surplus of scholarships to work with, and several high-profile recruits on its radar. Which could mean USC is in for a wild three-day signing period, or a quiet one.
There are a number of prospects who could commit to USC this week (more on them later). But other targets for Riley might want to wait until the February signing period to make a decision.
Riley’s only been on the job at USC for just over two weeks. He’s still putting together his coaching staff. And for prospects who weren’t recruited by him at Oklahoma, there remains time to develop a relationship with Riley and his assistants before pulling the trigger.
Some might be ready to go this week. Some might need more time. But even if Wednesday is national signing day, Riley’s work to build out his first USC roster won’t be over this week.
CURRENT COMMITS
DT Earl Barquet, transfer, TCU
P Atticus Bertrams, two-star, Australia
RB Raleek Brown, five-star, Mater Dei
CB Fabian Ross, four-star, Bishop Gorman (Nev.)
DE Devan Thompkins, three-star, Stockton Edison
POSITIONS OF NEED
Let’s be honest for a second: There’s not a position group on the USC roster that couldn’t use some help. With that out of the way, here are some areas of particular need.
Starting on defense, USC needs some serious reinforcements at linebacker. It was a group that had depth issues before Raymond Scott, Hunter Echols and Juliano Falaniko entered the transfer portal. The defensive line needs help, especially at tackle, even after Monday’s commitment from Barquet. And some veteran players at cornerback would be a good addition given that either or both Chris Steele and Isaac Taylor-Stuart could leave for the NFL draft.
Offensive line should be the first priority on the other side of the ball. USC has a lot of young linemen, but it would be good for Riley and his staff to add some higher-rated players to give USC a stronger foundation at the position. Bringing in some depth at running back and wide receiver is necessary. And a quarterback would be good, just to have as insurance behind sophomore Jaxson Dart and redshirt freshman Miller Moss, but that might be difficult to swing with five-star Malachi Nelson already waiting in the Trojans’ 2023 class.
WHO TO WATCH
Five-star Mater Dei cornerback Domani Jackson leads the group of USC prospects expected to announce decisions this week. Jackson was a previous USC commit who backed off his pledge in November during the coaching search. Jackson is down to the Trojans and Alabama, but he was at USC on Sunday for a visit to campus.
Another Monarch, four-star wide receiver C.J. Williams, decommitted from Notre Dame following a visit to USC this past weekend. Former Mater Dei cornerback and LSU transfer Elias Ricks was also on campus for an unofficial visit.
Four-star Bishop Gorman safety Zion Branch visited USC last weekend, too, and he will decide between USC, Ohio State and Oklahoma on Wednesday. The same goes for four-star running back Jovantae Barnes, who is picking between USC, Oklahoma, Alabama, Florida State and Utah.
Some, like five-star offensive lineman D.J. Campbell, will wait until the signing period in February to make a final decision. Others, such as four-star edge rusher Cyrus Moss, haven’t announced decision dates.

Urban Meyer was just fired
He needs to retire to a quiet and peaceful life or attend the Nick Saban Coaches Rehab. A guy with a boat load of talent but his life is out of control.
Poor guy. In all seriousness, I feel sad for Meyer. Quite a massive comedown in no time at all.
I really wanted him to be hired back in 2018. I wonder if he would have stayed in control of his life had he stayed in the college ranks with USC. we will never know for sure, but the current meltdown is quite a development.

Brandon Jones — “meteoric rise in coaching ranks”
Jones seems to have a great resume. Let’s Go Brandon!
I feel it’s a good hire, but…..after watching the highlights of the Cinci game, Houston’s offensive line was outplayed in the Houston-Cincinnati conference championship game.
In a good way….
Why not both?
Great game: USC escapes late 66, UCI 61
Definitely won with defense. Our starting back court was 4-23. Still pulled it out.

“This past weekend at my official I kind of just knew, this is the place for me,” Nevada S Zion Branch told TrojanSports.com. “Just how genuine the coaching staff is and how much of a great relationship I have with Coach Riley and the whole staff, Coach Grinch, even old staff like coach Donte [Williams] and guys like Gavin Morris that are there. That’s pretty much the biggest thing…”

Eli going to Bama makes sense. He gets one year before NFL, needs to capitalize on a NC caliber team. His exposure will be better. But not for long, in a few years we will be right there.
Chris, I agree. But I think we all are learning how long the process of becoming truly elite in this environment. We will get there. But it is not going to be a quick fix. Once we get there, no one will be able to compete.
He was a 1 year and done player anyways so it doesn’t surprise me. Bama offered more in the NIL just like Lane Kiffin was saying.
Lincoln Riley is always thinking long-term IMO. It would have been nice to have Ricks.
But getting CB Domani Jackson over ALA on Friday is what really matters.
Not a bad swap, if it works out. AL gets Elias and we get Jackson.
Wasn’t there talk about a package of both of them? Hope AL isn’t working the package also.

LSU CB Eli Ricks is transferring to ALA.
USC Basketball host UC Irvine tonight at 6pm at the Galen Center. The game can be seen on the Pac12 Network. UCI lost its opener at New Mexico State (62-51), before posting wins vs. Boise State (58-50), vs. La Verne (100-41), vs. Pepperdine (82-48), at Santa Clara (69-64) and vs. Bethesda (86-54). Alabama brought in three five-star players and 16 four-stars, with edge rusher Jeremiah Alexander of Alabaster, Alabama, the highest rated of the 21 signed by coach Nick Saban. Lay it out there Lane. I wonder how long he’ll be at OLE MISS?
Anybody know about CJ Williams WR that decommitted from ND and was projected to USC?
Believe he signs this week, then announce at all-star game Jan.
ESPN’s No. 7 OLB, Marvin Jones, Jr, (6-4.5, 245, Ft. Lauderdale American Heritage, FL) has chosen GA. Dad played at FSU. USC, ALA and OU also got visits.
He was (very- outside chance surprise I thought we ‘might get’ today
Are there any announcements left for today we are recruiting..
When does portal 5* Ricks choose…
USC is now ranked No. 80 by 247Sports, up from No. 104 when the day began. ASU (83) and UW (88) now trail the Trojans in the Pac-12.
TEXAS A&M is loading up big-time today! Jimbo is really earning that massive salary on LOI Day.
Former USC WR/Trojan star Keary Colbert is headed to the UF Gators to coach WRs for new coach Billy Napier.
Add 4-star safety Zion Branch! Welcome to the future of Trojan Football, Zion!
Good sign: Six of USC’s first seven new additions are defensive players (I am including the punter here).
Super versatile, sideline-to-sideline No. 5 S Zion Branch (Bishop Gorman, NV, 6-1, 200, No.76 overall) has just announced he is going to USC (Branch’s true dream school)! OHIO ST finished No. 2.
“It’s a great opportunity for me to go in there and make an impact. When Lincoln Riley came to USC, it was just like a dream.”
Allen, of Rivals, Scout, 247 who do you like the best?
Is D.J. Campbell from above article, #10(247) in the nation overall, 5*, Devon Campbell from Arlington Tx?
I have no preference really, but I use 247Sports the most for recruiting.
Yes. It’s Devon J. Campbell, 6-3, 310, Arlington Bowie, TX. The fact he’s waiting for Feb to sign is great for USC, which must beat out ALA, TEXAS (seems to be the fave), OU, and LSU.
Campbell would be a catch, the best OL in the class and 10th rated athlete in the country.
Lincoln Riley (“With the transfer portal now, every day is signing day. Because of our large turnover, this class we’re bringing in is going to be so critical to us on the ground floor. We have to make sure we’re bringing the right guys in, and not guys who don’t fit. It’s gonna continue over the next month, well into the signing day in February, and honestly, throughout the spring. This roster build is ongoing.”) on four of his signees so far: Devan Thompkins — “We loved everything that we saw about Devan when we evaluated him. He’ll fit in… Read more »
Love his straight forward comments about remaking the roster. He is also leaving little doubt that our talent wasn’t great. So glad that we’ve finally turned the page.
I caught that too. It will go right over Heltons head though.
That’s because they are all warriors.
Texas is having a great day, Sark is reeling them in.
Good for Seven-Win Sark (oops, he lost seven this year, including a loss to 2-10 KU). So glad he’s not our coach.
Surprise of the day, make that the last 20 years. Just amazing. Huge NIL implications.
2022’s #1 prospect, CB Travis Hunter, flipped from FSU to JAX ST and Deion Sanders.
USC just signed ATH Raleek Brown, the 5th new Trojan of the day. 5. ATH Raleek Brown (5-8, 185, Santa Ana Mater Dei, CA) — He made 2021 PrepStar Dream Team as he had 132 carries for 1,062 yards (8.0 avg) with 12 TDs and caught 12 passes for 107 yards (8.9 avg) as a senior running back at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana (Calif.). Mater Dei went 12-0 and won the 2021 national, state Open Division and CIF Southern Section Division I titles. He made the 2021 spring MaxPreps All-State first team as a junior when he had 53 carries for 367 yards (6.9… Read more »
HUGE!!
There will never be another Reggie Bush. But Brown is twitchy, fast, catches well, and will be a dynamic weapon for the Trojans. The complete Raleek Brown eval, per 247Sports: “Shorter back but well constructed with dense, stout build and naturally lower center of gravity. Likely an all-purpose type in the long run, but has shown during senior season encouraging high-volume capability when required. Electric top-end speed verified in track and combine testing environments. Ran multiple sub-11.00 100’s and a verified 4.47 40 as a freshman in high school. Speed fully reflected on the field. Combines game-breaking top end with… Read more »

Trojans lose out on PSU OL transfer Andre Roye (6-6, 320, Baltimore St. Frances Acad, MD), who signs with Maryland over USC (visited last weekend).
Roye made official visits to USC, Arizona State, Penn State, Maryland and Rutgers. The final four were made in June, and Roye had those as his top four leading into the fall.
“It’s the hometown team,” he said at the time. “The new facility is cool, but I am not into glamour stuff. I just like football but it’s good. It’s nice.”
247sports.com
Sounds like Andre just settled for Maryland, a perpetual bottom to middle of the pack team since it joined the Big10. Mama’s boy wanted to stay home…. See ya!
USC just added its 3rd signee of the day: 3. DE Devan Thompkins (6-5, 230), Stockton Edison, CA — He made 2021 PrepStar All-Western Region as he had 9 tackles, 2 deflections and a fumble recovery on defense and caught 3 passes for 24 yards (8.0 avg) on offense as a senior defensive end and tight end at Edison High in Stockton (Calif.). He also played basketball at Edison. He had not played football since the sixth grade, and instead concentrated on basketball. He spent his first 3 years of high school at St. Mary’s High in Stockton, where he played basketball and averaged 13.2… Read more »
6’6″ and 230, thinking about another Drake London? Maybe. As an edge rusher that is a tall obstacle to throw over or around. Great recruit.
So far, the Trojans have received signed LOIs from P Atticus Bertrams from Sydney Newington College, Australia, and ILB Garrison Madden (just offered last week) from Hampton Dutchtown, GA. 1. Atticus Bertrams (6-3, 215, Sydney Newington College, Australia) — He played 11 years (2010-20) with the Drummoyne Power junior Australian rules football club in Sydney, Australia. He then trained with ProKick Australia, an Australian-based kicking academy. He attended high school at Newington College in Stanmore, Australia, graduating in 2020. He was on the Australian rules football, basketball and track teams at Newington College. 2. Garrison Madden (6-2, 200, Hampton Dutchtown, GA) — He… Read more »
Think it will be one at a time right up to the time the portal closes. As much as I would love to see us shoot to top 20 in rankings, that will wait to the portal closes as well. Like new combined ranking. The highlight this week will come Friday when Jackson announces…Come Feb signing date, believe the HS class will be small in numbers, yet high in avg. Sure would be fun this week to land a big surprise from east of Nevada
Imagine getting a surprise from east of Nevada with Helton coaching? Oh, I forgot. That would officially be impossible.
Happy LOI Day to all. And to all a good night!
I sure hope USC beats ALA for Mater Dei super DB Domani Jackson. What a comeback that would be for the Trojans, and what an early shot in the arm for Lincoln Riley, if he could pull this off (with the help of Donte Williams, of course).
All this years-long pent-up crazy enthusiasm for USC is a sudden sight to behold.
It’s a whole different world for us Trojan fans. To have hope again that we will actually make the changes to make our program better instead of using politician talk out of the Cat’s lyin’ mouth to say that the changes will be made but nothing actually happens.😎✌
