Bleacher Report breaking news — USC Lands 2022 5-Star ⭐ 6-5, 265-pound SDE Mykel Williams who has committed to the Trojans over offers from ALA, GA, CLEM, OHIO ST, et al. Steve Wiltfong (247Sports) — Five-star DL Mykel Williams (Columbus Hardaway, GA, #39 in top 247 prospects, #6 DL in the nation) commits to USC as Clay Helton and his staff continue to land difference-makers at the most important positions. “I just feel like it was the right moment.” Per Scott Schrader (USC Scoop) — Father of Mykel: “It was a good experience (June trip to USC), had great talks… Read more »
I think this kid wants a future in media. If so, SC is probably the best place in the nation to make contacts. This just confirms that the NILs are going to bring a massive change into collegiate football (and will defeat any attempt at unionization – the star kids at a SC, an UCLA and an Oregon are going to want to keep the money their fame brings and not share with a 3rd team center on Cal).
Here’s one of his money shots, complete with L.A. palm tree backdrop:
TCU RB Darwin Barlow transfers to USC: Ryan Young (TrojanSports.com) — USC was looking to replenish its future RB depth in this 2022 recruiting class, and the Trojans actually found a more immediate boost as Darwin Barlow announced Monday night he will transfer from TCU to the Trojans. Barlow, from Newton, Texas, was a 3-star/4-star prospect ranked the No. 31 RB in the 2019 class and had strongly considered the Trojans before signing with TCU over OKS, FSU, TT, ARK, USC and MINN. As a redshirt freshman this past fall, the 5-foot-11, 204-pound Barlow ranked second on the Horned Frogs… Read more »
Looks like the staff agreed with your take that they needed more depth. Looks to be a replacement for Carr (and perhaps an upgrade). He is certainly appears more suited for the Air Raid.

Linebackers: Drake Jackson, Kana’i Mauga, Jordan Iosefa, Ralen Goforth, Hunter Echols
This group is ranked a lot on Jackson bouncing back to 2019 form as a true linebacker, and Mauga following up on how he closed the season.
The rest of the depth has a lot to prove as well.

Defensive Ends: Nick Figueroa, Tuli Tuipulotu, Korey Foreman
Defensive Tackles: Brandon Pili, Ishmael Sopsher, Jamar Sekona
The Trojans lose a lot upfront, but return some nice pieces.
Figuera and Tuipulotu are borderline All-Pac-12 guys, and Pili has a lot of reps looking solid, (but unfortunately is rehabbing from torn Achilles tendon surgery in mid-April and should miss the 2021 season).
True freshman Foreman, who was ranked as the top overall player in the Class of 2021, could be an instant star.

From The Athletic (Matt Barrows) on why the SF 49ers love their “old school badass” Talanoa Hufanga: No, there is no one quite like Talanoa Hufanga, which is precisely why the 49ers were so happy — no, ecstatic — to draft him in the fifth round last month. The team loves all eight of its draft picks. Hufanga, however, seemed to fire up the scouting staff the most. “He was a favorite of a lot of people,” assistant general manager Adam Peters said. Peters noted the USC safety was one of two selections — quarterback Trey Lance was the other — the… Read more »
Just in case you haven’t heard enough about massive DL Jay Toia’s sudden and unexpected split from USC football:
Per Toia family sources — “Jay felt like USC didn’t fulfill their promises. He didn’t feel like it was a good fit with the coaching staff during spring ball. Him and his family felt they needed to explore other options…”
Allen, His move to UCLA makes no “business sense.” UCLA has an DL coach who is clearly inferior to Vic. Nansen is only in his 2nd year at that position. UCLA has no NIL value at all, while SC does. UCLA is not going to be competitive nationally during his time there. SC might. I figure what happened was “personal.” If I were to guess, the “Uncle” you wrote about got into it with Vic. Vic is Samoan and the “Uncle” is Tonganese. Just a guess. I know this sounds awful, but I am glad he left for several reasons,… Read more »
So you’ve officially crossed over and are now actively rooting for USC to lose games to get Helton out quicker!
At least you’re not apathetic yet.
There seems to be less hope about USC football, in the immediate sense, than I can ever remember. Am I just exaggerating, or forgetting about a dismal USC football period of the past? What USC football period was worse in our lifetimes?
I am not certain that I have crossed over that much. What I am rooting for is the consequences of having an incompetent in charge of the program be allowed to take place. SC is NOT elite. Any claim to the contrary is simple deception. Clay keeps making the claim that SC is close and is seeking championships, which is simply a lie. The only way to expose the lie is for the consequences to occur and have Clay’s impersonation of Bagdad Bob become obvious. As to the all time low, I am with you. I think SC Football is… Read more »
Does anyone know why Coach Smith Gilbert, who is clearly elite, left SC for GA? She is clearly an elite coach. SC appears to have several elite coaches on staff but strangley neither of the two most important sports on campus – football and men’s BB have elite coaches. Enfield is clearly superior to Helton, for (unlike Helton) Enfield could get a job coaching at a top 50 school, but he is not shown himself to be elite. Enfield has yet to be renewed (Bohn is wisely seeing how he performs without the Mobleys) but he does deserve the chance… Read more »
USC acts like they just grow national championship coaches on trees. GA offered her a lot more money I’m sure and USC just let her go. The weirdness of USC continues on. Maybe Bohn and Folt just don’t care about T&F national championships. They don’t seem to care about a lot of things some of us care more about. Mike Bohn — “The Trojan Family offers its gratitude and congratulations to Caryl Smith Gilbert on her appointment as the new Director of Track & Field at the University of Georgia. In eight seasons leading our program, Caryl established USC Track & Field… Read more »
F’ing A! Good gracious and she’s going Georgia? Nothing like SEC money in today’s world of college athletics.
I am surprised little mao let her leave—she checked off many of the SJW boxes that Foltie requires. Female, Minority, etc.
Caryl Smith Gilbert sure knows how to make an exit! Job well-done CSG. Thanks for the memories. You were great!
The Pac-12 and USC certainly know their limitations. Right off the bat, monetarily, clearly neither can remotely compete with organizations like the SEC and its member institutions.
Thanks for your thoughts. Makes sense. I had another idea to supplement it. SC just invested heavily in staffing Women’s BB, another non-revenue producing sport. Wanna bet that the new Women’s BB coach was paid more (or at least given a larger staff budget) than by far the best T&F coach of both the Men & the Women in the nation? The new Women’s BB coach was paid certainly far more if you count the number of student athletes involved and it is much easier to manage scholarships and being elite in Women’s BB at a private school than in… Read more »
USC women win another NCAA outdoor track and field team title!
The Trojans finished with 74 points, 11 ahead of Texas A&M. The USC women also won the title in 2001 and 2018 and finished second in 2019, the last year the event was held.
USC captured its third women’s national outdoor track and field title Saturday, with Texas A&M finishing second.
Final Results
Nobody noticed UGA tweet announcing new track coach?
Yup they stole our track coach right after the trophy got cold.
Wow. How disheartening. USC just seems clueless.
Great effort by the entire team and especially Captain Anna Cockrell who not only won her specialty, the 400m hurdles, but also the 100.
Caryl Smith Gilbert is simply an awesome coach. Just amazing IMO. The USC women had 11 athletes combine to earn 19 first-team All-America honors during the two days of competition. USC began the day with no points, but had 13 scoring opportunities today and more than took advantage of them. USC’s 74 points were its most ever in the current scoring format which began in 1985 and are the most by any team since Texas A&M scored 75 to win the 2014 title. USC is the only program to finish in the top three in each of the last four… Read more »
I agree 100 percent on coach Caryl Smith Gilbert. Her success and the teams’ performances should bring great recruiting results in the years to come.
The GA Bulldogs know a good thing when they see it. They just stepped right up to the plate and quickly steered one of USC’s only great coaches away to GREENER pastures. Bye-bye CSG! Things sure were great when we had you.
This one really caught me by surprise. The timing of it suggests she was in touch with GA officials before and during the NCAAs. I’ve not been to Athens, GA, but spent a lot of time in Marietta, GA when I worked for Lockheed. Very humid in the Summer! Only things that would be appealing in my mind is the lower cost of living and slower pace of life compared to So Cal. I don’t know if Bohn counter offered, but this one hurts and casts doubts in my mind whether Bohn is the guy for the long term.
USC refused to get into any bidding war whatsoever, and depending on whom you believe, Bohn never even countered. Folt did nothing to support trying to keep CSG either, despite meeting with her.
Thanks for the information and your insight Allen. I’m very disappointed with Folt and hope her tenure is short lived.
