USC vs. Colorado: Trojans push to build on Keaontay Ingram’s rushing success
Uneasy USC hits the road to face a Colorado team equally in need of a win as Pac-12 play continues for the Trojans.
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — Mike Jinks promised all along that he would feed the hot hand. So when Keaontay Ingram finally started heating up Saturday against Oregon State and USC finally seemed to find its stride in the run game, the Trojans’ running backs coach wasn’t about to risk him cooling down.
Ingram kept getting the rock. He took six carries for 40 yards in the first quarter and four carries for 24 yards in the second. All the while, Vavae Malepeai, the other option in USC’s tandem backfield, sat on the sideline or stepped in largely to pass block.
It was a stark shift from the two-back approach Jinks had first committed to in January. But for the first time all season, USC’s run game finally seemed to find its rhythm — until Oregon State gave USC no choice but to abandon the run altogether during the 45-27 defeat.
“He definitely lit a spark,” Jinks said of Ingram. “And when they’re hot, they all know this, they’re not coming out. They’re not coming out. So we were gonna keep feeding him as long as we possibly could.”
While one back was well fed Saturday, the other mostly went hungry. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter, when the deficit extended to three scores and the run game had long been abandoned, that Malepeai worked in for four carries in garbage time. He managed 12 yards to Ingram’s 79, while Ingram also scored two touchdowns on 14 carries.
Touches, as previously promised, have been evenly split between the two this season, with Ingram handling 44 carries and Malepeai handling 42. Ingram, when asked about their split, said he’s happy to add more to his plate, if need be.
“If we need a spark, I feel like I’m the guy to deliver that,” Ingram said. “So I carry that on my shoulders a lot.”
The transfer back may find USC’s run game on his shoulders again Saturday, when he’s asked to go toe-to-toe with Colorado’s Jarek Broussard, last season’s Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year. Broussard has seen his own workload drop dramatically in 2021 from 26 carries per game to just 11 through four games. But in a game that could be decided on the ground, whomever sets the tone in the run game could run away with a much-needed Pac-12 victory.
Whether that’ll be Ingram or Malepeai for USC, coaches say, still depends on who heats up when it matters most.
“That’s always kind of the approach,” USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell said. “But when [Ingram] is playing like he did Saturday, you have to try and feed him. Because like I said, he’s doing a lot of good things, playing really well, and having the ball in his hands was good for the offense.”

You only need to know about me as a fanatical SC fan.– Fanatical. I have been ‘thrown out’ of more games than many people have attended. SC football and basketball are the only sports I care about. After that sports is a blur, a bloody bore, as the English might say….
To see so many Trojans jumping off the ship, or at least thinking about it, is alarming. To say the least. I mean, how is this football negativity, or at least apathy, going to rub off on 4-star, 5-star potential Trojans?
From what I have seen through 4 games if USC runs straight ahead they will have no run game. Keep it around the tackles, have a tight end that blocks and Ingram will get his yards.
Former USC All-American OT Steve Riley (68) died on Sept. 16 from cardiac arrest.
Riley was an OT on the 1972 NC/best ever team that went undefeated and he was a 1973 AA before starring for 11 years in the NFL with Minnesota Vikings.
Riley’s large hand making the #1 sign with my blood on it dominated the front cover of SuperPrep’s inaugural pre-season 1985 issue.
There’s an obscure never-to-be-repeated fact for you.
Ingram came to SC intending to be the No. 1 runner, and he has proven his worth as a hard-nosed back.,,,
And let us not forget that SC has many freshman who will be Trojans for the next 4-years, so I am not ready to give up on them. They cannot wait for SC to become a power again, sometime in 2024 or 2025. Their time is now. Wins will be difficult, but I want to see them get at least a few.
The real reason that SC should have no problem getting a quality HC. Dan Marino rated the top 10 QBs in the nation today. The top 3 were Bryce Young (Mater Dei), Matt Correll (numerous So. Cal HS’s) and JT Daniel (Mater Dei and SC). JT was so lucky to escape Clay and his Pussy Cats.
Strange when I consider Kedon. Two years ago he was on fire and looked like a sure fire 1st rounder and Heisman candidate for this year. Instead he has significantly regressed and it is highly doubtful he repeats as All League. On the other hand, Fresno State’s QB has matured and exploded. He is a legit Heisman and AA candidate. Who would have guessed that Fresno State would be better at developing QBs than SC. And, do not be mislead by the article above. SC will not be running the ball on Saturday. CO has a decent D (better than… Read more »
Out of curiosity I looked up the weather in Boulder Colorado for Saturday and it looks like dry, light wind, mid to upper 60s for most of the game. Weather should not be an excuse. Since I believe both coordinators have blown their audition for the headman job, maybe there will be some football played by the Trojans. It would be nice to see a balanced offense and somewhat controlled disciplined defense take the field. Would it hurt to see the punter (who played rugby) take the ball and run for a first down? Would it be nice to see… Read more »

QB Jake Haener is insanely fun to watch perform. What an artist.
Kalen DeBoer is an excellent HC, and if USC hired him I would not be upset over it.
