No. 21 USC upsets No. 12 UCLA for fifth consecutive win over Bruins
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — This time there would be no late heartbreak, no final turn of the knife, no stunning buzzer-beater to remember (or forget). There was no Tahj Eaddy in the corner for three or Jonah Mathews step-back at the top of the key. There would be no one moment that would haunt UCLA — or play on forever in highlight reels for USC.
This time it was UCLA’s Tyger Campbell who had the ball in his hands late, down three with a chance for a stunning shot in the final seconds.
This time, as a sold-out Galen Center crowd held its breath, the buzzer-beater clanked off the back of the iron — and USC still won a stunner, taking down No. 12 UCLA 67-64 for its biggest victory of the season.

For No. 21 USC, the win, its fifth straight over UCLA, was meaningful on multiple fronts. It was the first for the Trojans over a ranked opponent this season, a major moment for a team that to this point had little else bolstering its NCAA tournament resume. USC also drew within 2½ games of Pac-12 leader Arizona, while all but eliminating its rival from the conference race.
It was a major mile marker for a program still working to establish itself as a Pac-12 power.
“This was an incredible win,” USC coach Andy Enfield said. “Without our best player on the court, in front of a packed house, this was a big-time win for us and a very, very important win because of what it means to our basketball program.”
That program has, for most of its existence, been left to chase its crosstown rival. The last time USC won five straight over UCLA, John Wooden was coaching at South Bend Central High School, a legendary college career still ahead of him.
The Trojans had won 42 in a row over their rivals to that point in 1943, but as Wooden took over a few years later, the next 79 years would pass by with USC unable to reach five consecutive wins over its rival.
Over those eight decades, there can’t have been many performances as gutsy as Drew Peterson’s on Saturday. The streaky senior had struggled over USC’s last four, shooting eight for 31.
But as the Trojans trudged on without their leading scorer, Peterson stepped into the void and more than filled Isaiah Mobley’s shoes. He scored 27 points and added 12 rebounds, five blocks and four assists as he dominated UCLA on both ends.
“He did everything tonight,” Enfield said. “He looked like a superstar out there. He was so good.”
“Obviously,” Peterson added with a grin, “I’ve got my confidence back and a little bit of swagger.”
For the Bruins, swagger was in short supply Saturday. It was a poor shooting performance that ultimately did them in. With USC’s stingy defense bearing down, UCLA shot a meager 30% — and 25% in the second half.
Campbell led the way for the Bruins, in spite of that final miss, scoring a season-high 27 while the rest of UCLA’s offense spent most of the night struggling to find a bucket against USC’s intensifying defense.
Still, Campbell had two chances to tie late, first coughing up a possession, then missing the final buzzer-beater attempt, when a Hail Mary inbounds pass from USC nearly ended in disaster.
The 30 seconds ahead of that final, desperate attempt seemed to beckon for a UCLA miracle. A breakaway dunk attempt for USC ended in a technical foul call when Max Agbonkpolo hung on the rim, giving UCLA a free throw and possession that left Enfield incensed.
With USC’s lead down to just three, an inbounds pass from freshman Harrison Hornery went awry, leaving Campbell with the ball in the corner. He left his feet, only to decide mid-shot that he wanted to pass. Freshman Reese Dixon-Waters was waiting, his deflection leading to another breakaway from Agbonkpolo.
But UCLA still wasn’t done, as another inbound pass — this time with just two seconds remaining — fell into the wrong hands.
Campbell scooped up the loose ball and threw up a prayer.
“I’m never letting Chevez [Goodwin] inbound the ball at the end of a game again,” Enfield quipped after.
Peterson said he thought Campbell’s shot was going in at first. Seconds later, he was bombarded by USC students rushing the court in jubilation, a scene neither he nor USC will soon forget.
“It was crazy,” Peterson said. “I’ve never been in one of those situations. You could just feel all the energy.”
To the final buzzer, the game had played out with an intensity similar to its buzzer-beating predecessors, with the two crosstown rivals trading punches.
But this time, USC was left to recreate the magic of its last four victories over UCLA without Mobley, who fractured his nose last weekend in a loss to Arizona. All signs pointed towards Mobley suiting up against the Bruins. He was fitted earlier in the week for a protective mask, and Enfield expressed confidence that he’d be in the lineup. But Enfield said after the game that concussion symptoms kept Mobley out.
A sold-out crowd was there to offer an emotional boost, making its presence known from the opening tip with bellowing chants from a jam-packed student section. When Mick Cronin left his bench after the first stoppage, the crowd showered the UCLA coach in boos.
The raucous atmosphere, coupled with a stingy Trojans defense, gave the Bruins fits to start.
As USC began to heat up from the perimeter, UCLA went cold, hitting just three of 14 during one 10-minute stretch. The slump spotted the Trojans a first-half lead that grew as large as eight before the Bruins fired their way back, cutting the lead to just two before halftime.
A scorching Campbell was UCLA’s only solace for much of the first half. The junior point guard scored 16 points, carrying the Bruins when they needed him most. While the rest of UCLA’s offense opened tentatively from the field, Campbell knocked down two key threes in the final two minutes of the half to keep USC from building an even larger lead.
Even while its top two scorers, Johnny Juzang and Jamie Jaquez, were held in check, shooting a combined six of 27, UCLA fought back to take a lead late, thanks to its prowess on the offensive boards — and its fearless point guard.
But Campbell’s final attempt to rewrite the past two years of the rivalry rimmed out. The bleachers emptied, and pandemonium ensued for a program that waited 80 years to build such a streak.

Rams celebrate title in Trojan Town
I wonder how Clancy Pendergast feels about Choc Chip Kelly these days? Assuming he actually wants to be the Bruin DC (and not some “advisor” of some sort), Kelly seems to be in no hurry to name him to the spot vacated by long-time Kelly staff guy Jerry Azzinaro.
Update: UCLA to Hire Bill McGovern as new DC. McGovern, 61, who’s been coaching for 38 years, was most recently the ILB coach with the Chicago Bears. He was Chip Kelly’s OLB coach with the Philadelphia Eagles per 247Sports.com.
USC leads the world in NFL HOF tackles with five over OHIO ST (3) and NEB and PITT (2 each).
Tony Boselli, Anthony Munoz, Ron Yary, Bruce Matthews, and Ron Mix.

I thought Ron Mix was a center?
Nope
Thank you..
Mix — “I was the first Trojan tackle to be inducted; that took place in 1979. I made it a habit of watching the other four play as professionals. We shared a technique that I find missing in many of the offensive tackles that play today: We were aggressive in our play. We did not just float back and let the defensive ends pound away at us. “My offensive line coach with the Chargers, Joe Madro, nicknamed me The Intellectual Assassin because of my style of play, and because I was attending law school at night. The other four Trojan… Read more »
CFB Salaries Is Luke Fickell at $5 million per year the greatest value in college football? — Stewart Mandel (The Athletic Mailbag) — “No, the greatest value in coaching is Nick Saban at $9.5 million last season. Somehow the guy with seven national championships is making the same salary as one-time national champion Jimbo Fisher and zero-time champion Mel Tucker. You could double Saban’s salary tomorrow and Alabama would still be getting every penny’s worth. “That $5 million is the exact same as Oklahoma State will be paying Mike Gundy in 2022 and $1 million a year more than Iowa… Read more »
What counts is the Return On Investment, ROI, for the athletic department. Saban generates $45 million in revenue for Alabama. A good ROI of $10 million. Riley will do the same for USC.
SC should do whatever it can to keep Enfield around. As a long suffering Basketball fan, Enfield has given us sustained success without recruiting knuckleheads and thugs. And a BB coach at the level of a Lincoln Riley is not walking thru the door to take Andy’s place.
Can USC keep Andy Enfield from going to Maryland? Rich Ruben (WeAreSC.com) — “Enfield’s teams have beaten UCLA ten times in the last fourteen meetings, including a 5-0 record against Mick Cronin since Cronin arrived in Westwood. In 2016, USC beat the Bruins three times, each by double figures, and by a combined total of 47 points. “Enfield has created a USC basketball identity. His teams play very good defense, have good size and are athletic. In the last few years, they have consistently been one of the best defensive teams in the country. This season they are 7th nationally… Read more »
Good points hard to argue with.
Brett McMurphy’s (Action Network) early Pac-12 bowl projections:
1. Rose Bowl Monday, Jan. 2 MICH vs. UTAH (-5)
2. Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl VT (-6) vs. UCLA
3. Las Vegas Bowl OLE MISS vs. UW (-8.5)
4. Valero Alamo Bowl OU (-6.5) vs USC
5. SDCCU Holiday Bowl FSU (-3) vs ORE
6. Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl ASU (-5) vs AIR
7. New Mexico Bowl SDS vs. ORE ST (1-13)
USC vs OU would be a high energy game for sure, but I would rather they go to the Rose Bowl or Vegas bowl.
USC Board of Trustees Chair Rick J. Caruso Dear Members of the USC Community, I want to share that this morning, I announced my plans to run for mayor of Los Angeles. I am running for mayor because I love Los Angeles and believe we must enact real, meaningful change in this city. Once a transition process is completed, I am also planning to step down as Chair of the USC Board of Trustees. Serving as Chair has been one of my greatest honors. I am grateful for your support, dedication, and partnership over the last four years, as we… Read more »
Very interesting in that he mentions LR by name in a resignation letter. Hoping to remind all USC fans’ come voting time?
Both Folt and Caruso, along with Bohn, and the entire USC Athletic staff, just killed it with the LR hire, including his excellent, well-placed staff. They’ve all got my vote now.
I also noticed Caruso’s usage of the “athletic overhaul” terminology. I’m not sure what that amounts to, or even really means.
I would take it (athletic overhaul) as the house cleaning needed after Varsity Blues.
Maybe Rick Caruso decided it wasn’t such a good idea anymore to have fake, yet famous celebrity influencer USC “athletes” Olivia Jade-style on his $100 mil, 216 ft superyacht, Invictus (unconquerable or undefeated in Latin).
This issue is certainly going to come up during the election cycle. Being Mayor of a Large Metro city is salve for the Ego, having the power (financial or otherwise) to Control the Mayor is salve of yet another kind! Others have opined as to Caruso’ part in the Lincoln Riley episode…Not withstanding Bohn and Sosna’ efforts and strategy Someone had to approve the Dollar amount and that had to be Caruso. Remember, he is a very successful businessman, he had to see the bleeding of the Football program finances, I’m sure he considered Folt’s sensitivity’s but understood that a… Read more »
Never trust a commie. Never trust little mao foltie. I hope the new BOT president keeps the little so snd so in check.
I wonder how involved Caruso was actually in getting LR to come. I am sure there were some politics involved to get his name out there. You would think Bohn truly carried the ball, Caruso got the photo ops.
I’m thinking his involvement was in influence and $$ in various forms, whether direct (donations) or indirect (connections). And, I think if Caruso didn’t want LR, it would never have happened.
How could he have ever been against it. He would have been run out of LA if it got out. I see it as he wanted a feather in his cap for the mayors race.
Well, by endearing himself to USC fans, he risks alienating ucla fans. All 3 of them. 😁
Caruso leaves a lot to be desired. But next to Marxists Karen Bass, he looks like a much better option.
After watching and rewatching the super bowl I have come to the conclusion that the NFL referees are about the same as pro wrestling refs. They didn’t call a lot of fouls, but when they did, it was enough to help one team win. The rest of the time they were looking away as someone was breaking a chair on another guy’s back. Not a real well officiated game at all.
I think the game’s simply too fast to get a lot of calls right in real-time. Heck, sometimes, we can’t even figure out the right call in slow motion after numerous replays. And honestly, I think you could call a penalty on every play if you wanted. It’s a tough subject, because losing because of a bad call in South Bend can be a seemingly life-altering event. Did Affholter make the catch? While not involving a penalty, I still can’t decide if he did or didn’t. How about Sam Dickerson in the corner of the end zone in the dark,… Read more »
My impression was Cinci gave it away as much as the refs missed calls. Going for it on 4th down at mid field on your first possession with it 0-0. Then the bone head player who was not suited up running out to celebrate the interception putting them on the 10 instead of the 20. Not a lot of discipline there. Cinci O Line getting crushed in the second half. Seems the rule in any championship in any sport that refs tend to let things go.
In the end, the Bengals O-line couldn’t hold ’em off. I’m glad that Burrow didn’t get hurt. Or did he?
Ian Rapoport@RapSheet
#Bengals QB Joe Burrow suffered a knee injury in the Super Bowl that won’t require surgery, sources say, based on initial tests. He’ll have to rehab, but the sprain shouldn’t drastically alter his offseason.
It’s still hard for me to believe that the STAN team that knocked Clay Helton into another universe, 42-28, lost its final seven games of the 2021 season 255 – 100. What the heck is going on in Palo Alto?
Ed O plans to take the next year off, while helping his three sons get into coaching. But he recently shared with Colin Cowherd how he would feel about ever coming back to USC:
“I would be open to that,” Orgeron said. “More than anything I love Los Angeles. They know I love USC.”
Oh my, can you imagine the recruiting engine we’d have with Coach O on the coaching staff again? Would there be any team capable of matching what USC could do? I get goosebumps thinking about it.
Right there is why he would never go to the ruins.
ucla is a dead end job. Can’t think of a single head coach who moved on from there to bigger and better things. Where are all their former head coaches in my lifetime now?
Super Bowl winner Dick Vermeil just got inducted into the NFL HOF along with Tony Boselli. I loved watching his Bruins beat OHIO ST in the Rose Bowl too.
Ah, forgot about him, fair enough. Twice for 3 seasons…short lived, but had good seasons. So I conclude, he was too good for ucla, knew it, and it was just a temporary landing spot rather than a destination..
Colorado
😅
I would hope anytime Ed wants to come to USC the door would be open. What an asset.

something so simple that Hugs seemed so incapable of.
Matt Barkley at courtside rooting USC on to beat UCLA hoops for 5th straight time.
Thinking of Barkley always reminds me of that 2011 50-0 beatdown of the white-uniformed UCLA little gutties, when he threw for 423 yds and six TDs. Barkley played for eight years in the NFL, ending his career with Buffalo, his 5th team, in 2020.

USC’s Drew Peterson Named Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Player Of The Week
LOS ANGELES — USC guard Drew Peterson was named the Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 7-13, it was announced by the Conference today (Feb. 14).
Peterson helped lead then No. 21 and now No. 17 USC to a pair of victories during the week over Pacific and then-No. 12 UCLA by averaging 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 4.5 blocks per game. The Libertyville, Ill. native also made 66.7 percent of his field-goal attempts (14-for-21), including 66.7 percent from three-point range (4-for-6).

So #17 beats #13, has a better record, but ranked 4 spots down, HMMMM…..
Maybe USC is being punished because Boogie Ellis couldn’t score one point against UCLA in the Drew Peterson Show. Ellis went 0-7 from the field with four rebounds and a team-high five turnovers in this very bizarre game at Galen. That’s all I can come up with.
Lincoln Riley @LincolnRiley
Wow what a show!!!!!! My guy @ReggieBush

Here’s one I had not heard…Adrian Peterson was almost a Trojan.
https://sports.yahoo.com/former-lsu-head-coach-ed-205500208.html
I remember reading that before.
Congrats to the Rams for making the moves to bring the stars and a championship to LA
Next up…Trojans!
Arthur Blank tries to do that occasionally for the Falcons, but it never works. I think he’s a meddler. Also, because Atlanta was built on an Indian burial mound, so they say, its professional sports teams are cursed. It has been true for the 32 years I have been here—except for the Braves winning a championship every quarter-century or so.
Champs, and without Woods, and OBJ for 2nd half.
Cooper Krupp is a great player, but Aaron Donald should have been MVP IMO
Kupp influenced the entire game even when he didn’t have the ball, but especially when he did. But then McDonald played his butt off too. A great win for LA.
It seems most believe PITT Panther alum AD (6-3/4, 285) should have been the SB MVP. Probably so, even though Cooper Baby was spectacular and clutch as usual. A lot of what the surprisingly big Cooper (almost 200 now) does kind of disappears into thin air, like the special stuff he employs to always get open, find spaces, finish off/change routes and give defenders fits after the catch. In the words of Mark Sanchez, “He’s like having another QB on the field.” Hopefully, AD, who has always been a Ram and was a 1st rounder (#13) doesn’t retire as he… Read more »
Even when you have a prolific Shaun McVay offense, it’s”defense” that wins championships! Defense wins the NFC championship and it now wins the Super Bowl. How many natties would Nick Saban have won without his staunch defenses?
So……………..Can the City of Los Angeles get used to having it’s football teams win Divisions and Conferences (and maybe more ) over the next few years ? ………We will see .
As long as LA doesn’t trip over its wokeness, the City of Angels could indeed become the City of Football–at least for the rest of the 2020s.😀
McVay really needs to pull this out for his legacy. The run game resembles USC and his play calling and adjustments have been just plain bad. Stafford has been off and Beckham’s injury is huge, but they have to get it done
There were times when I was thinking Clay Helton was calling plays. As soon as they started passing on first down the game changed, they scored and won.
Exactly, Steve, they kept on wasting downs trying to run off tackle when it just wasn’t there all game. They still found a way to get it done. Happy for Stafford, Donald and the boys
A game where I barely noticed the Refs …..But thet are getting involved now .
Rams GOTTA score this possession .
No more turnovers Rams offense .
Uh Oh ………..The Mike Tannenbaum curse ???????? ……….Mike Tannenbaum is an EX NY Jets /Dolphins GM …….On 3 different NY Radio stations he make one NFL pick per week ……He is something like 3-17 (including the playoffs) His LOCK OF THE YEAR ?????……Rams Blowout Bengals in this game ……The Mike Tannenbaum curse ????????
I know AT LEAST 2 NY Radio personalties that changed their pick when they heard MR. Tannenbaums pick .
Rams win ……..People will forget that interception……Rams lose ……..Maybe not .
Bengals bonehead call on 4th and 1 at midfield on first series. Shoulda punted
Hey ……….Marcus in a pre-Super Bowl commecial…….(On this Blog I gotta figure his last name is not needed ) ……Fight ON !!!!!
Sean Penn at the game .
After watching three USC games this season I have such mixed opinion. They fooled me against ucla, I figured they would blow it in the end and they almost did but they hung in there for the big win. What I see with Andy is he recruits some really good players but for some reason the chemistry isn’t always there and that reflects on him. If he goes to Maryland it give Bohn a shot for another big time hire.
I seriously doubt that a BB coach of Lincoln Riley’s stature would come to coach at SC.. Enfield has his flaws, but how can anyone complain about the trajectory of our program? I wouldn’t be surprised if he left, but the program is better off if he stays.
Hopefully, Enfield wants to stay at USC. I think the issue is now that he might rather be at MARYD, at least per some reports/speculation.
I get that you are a big Enfield guy and that is cool, I am just lukewarm about him, not a big fan.
I’m saying the Rams beat the Bengals by 10+ points. What a perfect scenario for the Rams, Sofi Stadium, and the entire southern California area, including USC, which now finally stands a chance to beat out Norman, Okla., as THE place to be.
I watched the Titans sack Joe Burrow nine times three weeks ago. And, I think the Rams DL is better than the Titans. I expect it will be a long day for Joe. I have a friend who lives in Cincy. He told me that is what folks said about another Joe (Namath) just before Super Bowl 3. He even regaled me with the first play of that Super Bowl – a 67 yard pass from Earl Morral to John Mackey. I agree with your call – the Rams by 10+.
Actually, I hope Burrow has an all-world Super Bowl game. To me, he is the true NFL MVP this year and also the NFL Story of the Year.
Ed O first brought Burrow to life at LSU, and it’s great to see the long-time memorable USC asst with the best voice in the business back in the limelight a little because of Burrow.
We are close Allen, I think it will be Rams by 13. Kupp could be incredible again and the Ram defense is going to tear apart the right side of the Bengals O line. I look for Aaron M to be player of the game if Kupp isn’t. Burrow should perform up to his normal self but it won’t quite be enough. Rams have to stop the underneath passes and flares out to Mixon. This is without a doubt one of the best matchups for the Superbowl I have seen.
I didn’t know that John Wooden coached at South Bend Central HS. Strange bedfellows.
To think that Wooden, who tormented USC for so many years, started his coaching career in South Bend, where I have yet to see the Trojans beat ND in person, strikes me as perfectly appropriate this Super Bowl Sunday.
The world of sports has such amazing, often improbable interconnections.
The poor little gutties. LR has fully eclipsed their low rent, wimpy football program without ever even coaching the Trojans in a game, and now, the Bruhorns have lost to USC hoops five games in a row. And it only took Drew Peterson’s great game to get it done.
The Bruins have fallen into a deep, deep sleep vs the mighty Trojans lately. So nice to see USC owning L.A.
Living 3000 miles away from LA I do not have ANY clue on how football we be in LA ( over the next 24 months or so ) as far as who will be LA’s #1 football team …………..The Rams or the USC Trojans …..Today’s particular sporting event might ……MIGHT be a factor in that .
It seems certain the speedy/tricky Cooper Kupp Rams will win the Super Bowl in a few hours. Empty stadium USC is coming off its worst season since I started following the team in ’62. I’ll let you be the judge.
Well projections seem to be pretty good for it’s TV Ratings >>>>>>>> (From MSNBC)
Drew Peterson had a career game that will go down in modern USC history.
He carried the Trojans on his back of course with a lot of help.
No longer are we the doormats.
Anderson took a hard charge close to end of the game.
Goodwin had his usual good game.
And it was Reese and Max that came though with solid games.
The defense as usual was very good.
But it was the controlled slowdown offense that won the game.
There were no stupid mistakes made or real bad shots.
I thought the ridiculous, worthless rim hang — bringing on the late technical, which literally kept the Bruins in the game, was incredibly stupid. Agree with all else.
It was amazing that USC held the Bruins to 30.2% shooting (25.7% in the 2nd half).
“We didn’t play the perfect game, but we played very hard and very tough,” Enfield said, totally accurately.
I really do not understand basketball. I have not watched an NBA game in years (and will not). I only watch SC basketball on TV (men only; I do not watch women’s BB of any type). I did not attend even one BB game when I was at SC. So, I am probably a very bad sample. The game was entertaining and I was really surprised by the outcome. I thought UCLA would win the game easily, particularly with Mobley out. The issue is what to expect from SC men’s BB and Enfield, who may be leaving for Maryland. Enfield… Read more »
You’re entertaining !
If Enfield gets the MARYD job, good luck to him. He has helped USC, especially lately with what seems like some excellent recruiting, in addition to the Mobley’s, who really turned the program around. While it seemed like USC did all it could to throw the game away on rim-hanging obnoxiousness and ridiculous late inbounds attempts, Drew Peterson was just a maniac. Great win for USC, especially with all the fans back inside Galen.
I agree Allen. If Enfield leaves, he at least picked up USC basketball off the floor and any coach who follows him will come into a better program. If He would get into more detailed coaching, I’d say pay him good money to keep him.
48-65 Kevin O’Neill set about as low a standard for USC hoops as you could get. Drunken public escapades a la Sark, didn’t help O’Neill’s profile a bit.
Although I hear what you are saying TrojanRJJ, I can still relate a bit. Basketball played second fiddle to football in my book most of my life. I was in the pep-band at Covina High School when Doc Sooter coached his 500th win and I had a vague interest in the game, but I was there to play music and watch the cheerleader squad. When I was substitute teaching at Kaiser high in Fontana I was eating lunch with the basketball coach. His team was undefeated and pretty good. When the athletic director came in the coach asked him what… Read more »
