What’s next for USC? Season finale against Cal
When: Saturday, 8 p.m. PT
Where: California Memorial Stadium (Berkeley)
TV/Radio: Fox Sports 1/AM 790
Records: USC 4-7, 3-5 in Pac-12; Cal 4-7, 3-5
USC update: The Trojans were officially eliminated from bowl contention with Saturday’s 35-31 loss to No. 13 BYU, making this weekend’s game against Cal the final date of the season for USC. … This was originally supposed to be played the second weekend of November but was postponed due to COVID-19 issues within Cal. So far, it is the only game delayed by the virus this season in college football. … Health remains a question for the Trojans as they prepare for Cal. QB Kedon Slovis (lower leg) has been sidelined for three weeks and RB Keaontay Ingram (ribs) missed the game against the Cougars after being limited in practice this week. … USC has won 15 of the last 16 meetings with the Golden Bears, including a 41-17 road win in 2019.
Cal report: The Golden Bears have split the two games since a COVID-19 outbreak disrupted their season. Cal returned with a 41-11 win over Stanford, then its offense looked like a shell of itself in a 42-14 loss to UCLA on Saturday that eliminated the Bears from bowl contention. In the latter game, the Bears went 4 for 13 on third-down conversions while quarterback Chase Garbers threw two interceptions and averaged 4.0 yards per attempt. … The Cal defense this year has been led by its two safeties. Daniel Scott and Elijah Hicks have combined for 137 tackles and each have two passes defended and three interceptions apiece. Linebacker Cameron Goode is a disruptive force in the backfield, with six sacks this season, good for third in the Pac-12.

Somewhere Clay Helton is smiling.
I have no Ill will towards Clay now that he is gone. As long as he keeps it that way.
Loved the interview on The Herd. The thing that stood out to me most is that LR does not come across as a know-it-all. He mentioned reaching out to Pete C and that he has a list of people that he will contact to pick their brains. This is what great leaders do, reach out to others and never stop learning, no matter their past success. The more I hear Riley talk, the more excited I get. It’s a great time to be a Trojan fan!
Lincoln Riley will be joining Colin Cowherd live in-studio today around 10 am PT.
I love this quote from Brandon Sosna, Mike Bohn’s young right-hand lieutenant, about urgency and preparedness: “It’s about timing — and luck can be such an incredible factor. What we did was position ourselves so that when the window of opportunity was created, we were ready to take advantage of it. Confidentiality was really the single most important factor because if at any point it ever got out, it probably ruins it. When Oklahoma State won that game, it felt like, hey, the enemy’s gates are down. Let’s go get it done.” So as it all finally and happily turns… Read more »
Really something, isn’t it. UW had to go with a Mountain West coach, who I think is very good. He is a huge upgrade over Lake (who turned out to be a Helton). Give UW credit, they realized their mistake and corrected it quickly. I never saw Kelly to LSU coming, but it makes a lot of sense. He is in the last 10 years of his career. Assuming LSU paid him $12 Million guaranteed, about the same for his staff, and full administrative support, he took the challenge. If nothing else, he now has a legitimate shot at the… Read more »
Lake was physically abusive to his players. Helton was basically a mother to his players.
Ari Wasserman (The Athletic) — “You have to hand it to USC. Months after firing Clay Helton, the school poached one of the most respected coaches in the game from another national power. USC wanted to prove that it’s back? Pulling Lincoln Riley is a ground-shaking statement that immediately changes the perception and the ceiling of the program. “‘If he can recruit California the way he did from Oklahoma, imagine what he can do from South Central (L.A.),’ said Terry Bullock, the recruiting coordinator and linebackers coach at California powerhouse St. John Bosco. ‘USC needed to get a guy with… Read more »
LAT — Commentary: Matt Leinart, USC revel in the Lincoln Riley hire: ‘This is the happiest I’ve been’ “It is hard,” Leinart said on Monday afternoon, “because I love USC, and my job is to be objective, and I just want to talk some college football (on Big Noon Kickoff). But I want my alma mater to be good, and I want them to do well, and I root for them, and that’s OK, because that’s how sports are. And it’s been challenging. Challenging to see this place not where I think it should be. But this just changes all of… Read more »
It looks to me like Pete Carroll’s HOF career in Seattle is winding down quickly. 3-7 Seattle looks putrid and harmless against 4-6 Washington, which is easily winning 17-9 with 6:30 go and driving inside the 50. Seattle has no D, as well as no O. Bad team.
Man this coaching carousel just keeps on spinning. To bad John didn’t start a game that we could bet on who gets hired where. Right now LSU has Kelly. Now who does ND hire, and on it goes. Fresno has an opening I hope they rehire Jeff Tedford. The Scoop is having trouble keeping up.
In a “After the Presser” show they brought up Mike Bohn and he said a phrase (with a tone of seriouness in his voice) “Intensity of Interest “…….I think I know why he (being SC’s AD ) wanted to use that particular phase………. “Intensity of Interest “
Crazy times in college football coaching circles. Just being reported that LSU signed Brian Kelley. Wow! That’s what lots of cash and easier entrance requirements will do for you. Another move I never saw coming
I enjoyed listening to Riley. Seems like a smart guy, from a different universe than the CAT, who wouldn’t have comprehended most of what Riley said. I will admit that I am much more excited about Trojan football than I would have been with any of the other names out there. No baggage, no risk, all upside. I have to tip my hat the administration, job very well done. Very professionally conducted search and execution of the plan. No drama, no leaks, no circus. Just results. Can’t wait for early signing day, late signing day, spring practice and the h2022… Read more »
Carol Folt, Rick Caruso, Mike Bohn, and Lincoln Riley are “all-in” on USC football. That much is very evident based on today’s words from these people. You can’t fake this stuff. We don’t have Clay Helton up there anymore, gibbering away his falsehoods. USC is COMMITTED. I forgive you Folt and Caruso. You really came through with a grand slam in the 9th. Today’s show was very simple and impressive with an empty Coliseum as a backdrop. Very appropriate because Riley went out of his way to say the joint would be soon packed with him as the new USC… Read more »
Gonna be agreeing with you on this Allen …….And it really gives a positive feel especially for the future ……Fight On !!!!!
Alright Allen, forgiveness is good for your soul man! 😎 You and I knew they would nail it with a big time hire.
I always had a lot more confidence in Bohn (who I always felt and stated would deliver big-time here) than Folt, who has used this absolutely huge hiring to heavily try to improve her very weak public image with many of us Trojan fans. Due to her earlier dumb decisions, USC was forced to fire Helton right when the season started because the team was so bad. I doubt forgiveness is as nearly as good for my soul as Folt getting heavily ridiculed and pinned down for her often lame approach to USC in general and being forced to finally… Read more »
Allen, I underestimated Folt. She learned. She clearly did not want to repeat her mistakes at UNC. As you stated in another post, she made a lot of really dumb decisions in her first two years. My guess is she got a ton of blow back and the bottom line really suffered. She changed, about a 180. She is now all in on football excellence and authorized a ton of money to be invested in the sport. My guess is Riley’s contract is about $15 Million a year. The staff is going to be another $10 Million. But, after totally… Read more »
If folt is serious about mending relationships with the Trojan Family, she should allow the reinstitution of the Trojan Clubs W/O the thumb of the SC administration controlling all things.
Thankfully, little Miss Folt is irrelevant now. We have our star, and his name is Lincoln Riley. She’s back in the shade, already overshadowed by Lincoln every minute of every day, where she belongs, probably wondering what long-standing local USC support group she can shut down. USC football won and finally managed to beat her. Actually, she’s the one who caved and received the so-called “olive branch” from Trojan football, which was always too big for her to dismiss/ignore while ensconced in her new Santa Monica USC party house. I’m just kidding, of course. Thank you Carol Folt! We forever… Read more »
