Luca Evans (OC Register) — LOS ANGELES – The massive beams overhead suddenly flickered off, and the turf was thrust into a half-eclipse, still 10 minutes of a college football game to be played.
And for the few thousands still straggled around the Coliseum late Saturday night, one of the stranger situations in recent USC memory dawned.
As the game clock froze in the fourth quarter Saturday night in USC’s home opener against Utah State, a partial power outage signaling potential doom, Trojans and Aggies alike simply began … wandering. Chatting with each other. Chatting with refs. There was nothing else to do. In the middle of what should have been ongoing play, Lincoln Riley began conferring with athletic director Jen Cohen at midfield, a host of administrators gathered nearby. The conversation was simple: Do we keep playing?
“And so,” Riley recalled postgame, “right as we were considering not playing anymore, they came on.”
Flickering to life, full-blast, and 10 more minutes of football were played, 10 minutes ultimately entirely meaningless to the final outcome of a 48-0 USC steamrolling but 10 minutes entirely important to the program’s foundation. Nobody wanted to stop, on this night where the 13th-ranked Trojans (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten) continued to insist D’Anton Lynn’s defensive upheaval has been very much real, blanking unranked Utah State through three-and-a-quarter frames with a front continuing to play with reckless abandon.
And when the Aggies missed a late field goal with a minute left, a host of USC youngsters and second-stringers came away bounding off the field in glee. They’d preserved USC’s first shutout since a 50-0 win over UCLA in 2011, a truly dominant effort at all levels for Lynn’s unit, the 34-year-old coordinator beaming and hitting a wipe-your-nose handshake with freshman Kameryn Fountain.
USC held Utah State to just 190 yards, its fewest allowed since 2014. It gave up just two third-down conversions. And only once did USC’s defense allow Utah State to pass the 40-yard line into Trojan territory.
“To be on this defense is a blessing, man,” said linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold, who finished with seven tackles. “It’s definitely the most fun I’ve had playing football in a very long time. It’s a blessing to be on this team.”
It served a sliver of revenge for ghosts of 2023 past. In many ways, Utah State transfer quarterback Bryson Barnes represented the downfall from expectations that crushed USC last fall, the anointed pig farmer who’d dragged an entire defense through the muck.
He came marching back into the Coliseum Saturday, a year after gashing USC’s defensive line for a 26-yard keeper that sealed a 34-32 Utah win, a loss at the hands of a kid that grew up on a pig farm in Milford, Utah, that all but killed USC’s College Football Playoff hopes. The loss sent the Trojans spiraling, as they lost three of their final four to end the regular season.
A year later, those hopes looked soundly renewed, USC reloading with a secondary that didn’t cede an inch to Barnes over the top and a front that kept a spy on his every move from the pocket.
“It was all about keeping him bottled in, keeping constant pressure, but also maintaining disciplined rush lanes,” USC defensive end Jamil Muhammad said.
Lynn pressed the issue all night, dialing up a safety blitz for Kamari Ramsey on a third down on Utah State’s first drive that forced a quick hit from Barnes short of the sticks; in the third quarter, Ramsey shot again off the edge on a fourth down and blew up Barnes for a force-fumble sack.
“It shows how much he believes in us – the different looks that he puts us in to get the quarterback to think a lot, or to get the OC to be off-balance a little bit too,” Ramsey said, of Lynn’s late-down aggressiveness.
Wyoming transfer Gavin Meyer forced USC’s first turnover of the season, tipping a Barnes pass in the second quarter that floated gently into the waiting arms of linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold.
And USC senior Eric Gentry, starting at middle linebacker in place of an injured Mason Cobb, looked for a second straight week like USC’s most impactful playmaker, stuffing the stat sheet with seven tackles, a sack and 1.5 tackles-for-loss.
“I got it in the first play, of the first quarter,” Gentry said, asked if there was a point in the second half he thought a shutout would be possible.
“(Expletive), I got it before the game,” he continued, beaming. “(Expletive), I’m already imagining a shutout, so,” proclaimed Gentry.
By the fourth quarter, with the game well in hand, the Trojans brought in a host of backups. And still, they managed to uphold the shutout, allowing just 89 yards in the second half.
The defense’s legs stayed fresh, in large part, due to much-praised complementary football. After an uneven effort at times in a 69-yard performance against LSU, Riley affirmed establishing the ground game was a point of emphasis against Utah State. It showed early: 10 of USC’s first plays were runs, punctuated by a 32-yard twist-and-dash from redshirt freshman Quinten Joyner and a following punch that served as USC’s first touchdown.
“Lincoln Riley’s the best offensive coach in college football, if not coach,” quarterback Miller Moss said postgame, asked about his success through his first three starts of college football. “But, we’ll leave that up for debate a little bit more.”
Veteran Mississippi State transfer Woody Marks rang the bell in a 103-yard first-half performance, Joyner added 84 yards and two touchdowns, and Moss played largely clean in finishing 21-of-30 for 229 yards and a touchdown. It didn’t hurt that both had massive holes to run through, thanks to a strong performance from USC’s offensive line.
Tight end Lake McRee continued to impress in the season’s early going, leading USC with 81 receiving yards.
It added to a complete effort that – on a day where a number of national powers stumbled in trap games against mid-major schools – cemented USC is finding true cohesion in Riley’s third year.
Michigan, the defending champs and USC’s next opponent, was run out of the Big House by Texas, as it struggled to move the ball with a new quarterback. Notre Dame lost on a game-winning kick to Northern Illinois, a team it paid $1.4 million to play in South Bend, Ind. Penn State needed a late comeback to overcome its defensive woes and beat Bowling Green, while Oregon barely slipped past Boise State.
“They have a chance, not only to be one of the best offenses in the country, but possibly one of the best defenses,” Utah State coach Nate Dreiling said postgame.
“So that is a complete football team right there that’s going to play a long, long time.”
After USC’s most dominant performance in years, the prevailing feeling Saturday was this brand of beatdown is just beginning to take hold. “We’re still not even close to as good as we can be,” Mascarenas-Arnold said.

Was anyone able to watch the USC//Utah State game on BTN through Xfinity. I know there is a dispute between Xfinity & BIG10/Fox. Don’t know it is relevant but I live in Oregon.
2002 UCLA grad Dylan Hernandez (LAT) — Lincoln Riley joked last week that his team played “some pretty good Big Ten football,” and he was right.
His team has a new identity. What was once a soft team that was overly reliant on Caleb Williams has transformed into the most physical group this program has fielded since Pete Carroll was the coach.
These Trojans won’t beat themselves. These Trojans can win a game in which they’re not their sharpest. These Trojans should reach the CFP. The road is clear.
Nah. Riley’s to be commended. He did a great job this off-season totally reconfiguring the team, basically from top to bottom. I’m not one of those guys predicting a 12-0 season. Even if we somehow don’t make the playoffs, the groundwork for the Trojans returning to power has been laid. I think it’s gonna happen. If we lose some tough games, it won’t be because of stupid, totally avoidable reasons like the last many, many years. This team obviously has a lot of fight in it and is now being coached-up much better by a superior new staff and an… Read more »
I think you are spot on there Allen. Running the table is a tall order but we won’t lose big or stupid. SC may just make or just miss a playoff spot this year, especially with the SEC seemingly so highly regarded so far taking most spots. Like you said before next year SC will be a top 5 contender with a great turnaround in recruiting this December.

Think of all the times USC has been over-ranked because of pre-season big-brand Trojan bias. Countless I would say. Yes, the CFB ranking world is never a horse race that begins with an even starting line. Staggered is much more like it. That’s part of the fun (at least for me) — watching teams try to dig out of holes or perceived unfair negative or positive bias. In the end, it’s only the finish that counts and goes into the books. Oh, I agree. LR and the Trojans have a lot to prove, and need to continue to do it on a weekly basis. Another couple of notable wins, like in 2 weeks at the Big House and then again the following week hosting the Badgers, and the recognition will come. Indeed, the story of what LR has somehow done with this USC team since the flopperooni against UCLA last season is an amazing saga. So many new parts, directions and obstacles overcome. To put it bluntly and briefly, I don’t even recognize the 2024 version of LR based on what agonized me about him so much in 2023. It’s been a miraculous and complete transformation in my eyes. I gave up on Justus Terry long ago. If USC pulls a miracle out of that hat over GA and latecomer ALA, then the Trojans have become truly charmed. But I think we’ll be fine without him.
USC football hasn’t been honestly “relevant” in far too long. Now that we are seemingly back where we belong, it’s amazing how Trojan football has become the talk of the town. I’m even suddenly seeing more USC gear in public.
And I think adding to the local buzz is to the new B1G alignment. As we know, so many Californians are transplants from elsewhere (self included), so now all these new matchups with teams from “back East” create “water-cooler” talk on a weekly basis instead of only at Rose Bowl time. The next 2 games are Michigan and Wisconsin! Are you kidding me! Let’s face it, this is way more exciting and interesting than regional games with Washington State and Cal. Cant help but commenting on jayden maiava. I know it wasn’t a large body work on Saturday night, but he was impressive on that field. I couldn’t be more confident of him coming in to take over, should Moss need to come out. His athleticism showed speed, but also a smooth finesse that wasn’t rushed or panicky. Good arm. Hate to lose him because he brings another weapon that’s hard to come by.
Agree. Maiava is a terrific backup which causes the D to have to worry about his scrambling ability. Hopefully, MM can stay out of trouble. But if he can’t, Maiava will do based on what I saw at least.
What happened to Bryson Barnes yesterday proved a point I have made before. Football is a team sport, a good quarterback can help, but without receivers and a line he’s out of luck.
On a different note did anyone else have pixelated and freezing on the Big10 channel? My wife paid for Peacock because they were advertising “Big 10 football” which means one select game (and one of our Cox receivers doesn’t get BTN) But our Cox contour has BTN, so saw the game with unintentional special effects.
It’s going to be hard to hang onto those defensive assistants after this year. But if USC loses only 1-2 games and then goes pretty deep into the playoff, there will be a lot of good coaches who will want to come to SC to pick from.
Jen Cohen can give Lynn all the money he would want and the collective could give him all the NIL publicity as well. Heck give him another title to boot. Whatever it takes.
Lynn has young children, he knew he could take the SC job without having to uproot his kids. My guess is Lynn will last 2-3 years and by then the bigger, more well funded schools will come calling. Just my guess!
Wife is a SoCal native and never wants to move … okay made that latter comment up
But a guy could hope. Lynn is our new Chow, we were always worried he would leave and finally did (sort of) and it ended a run that could had made Saban’s look like chump change. SC wins it all in 2003,2004,2005 and probably 2007, certainly 2008. Pete’s most talented team.
That might be it for LSU, he is their best interior DL player unless that McKinley dude who is a 5 star freshman steps it up big time…and how often does a young one do that on the lines.
USC Trojans Recruiting: 4-Star LB Ty Jackson (6-1, 200) Commits To USC On Sunday, the Trojans added a 2025 coveted prospect, bolstering an already solid group of HS players.
Randall Sweet (SI.com) — Rated the No. 25 overall prospect and the nation’s #1 LB per On3, TyJackson is a huge addition to USC’s 2025 class.
The south Florida standout committed to D’Anton Lynn and Co over ALA, GA and MICH to name just a few.
With Jackson’s commitment, USC holds the nation’s No. 13 class per Rivals.com.
I must admit that I am really impressed at how focused the coaches had our players last night. While so many teams struggled against inferior teams, our guys guys were all business. And Danton Lynn is a star. Hope we can get at least two seasons with him.Yesterday was pretty special, and would have been perfect if Oklahoma and Oregon had also lost.
There still lots of potential roadblocks on the schedule, and teams like Washington and Nebraska will also be tough outs. But 10 wins, and a playoff spot look doable.
Just being realistic — Can you imagine the number of other programs that are lasering on D’Anton Lynn after his incredibly successful immediate turnarounds at both UCLA and now USC.
Like you, I hope we get two seasons out of him. But it only took LR one to steal him from UCLA, and that was before Lynn had become a household name, which he is now.
The Football Gods can be very cruel and impossible to predict. I guess that’s part of the game and why we enjoy it so much.
We can only hope that Lynn knew UCLA was imploding and USC is on the rise with his help. Pay him whatever it takes to keep him. Keep him at least till we a NC.
Is USC’s hard schedule turning soft? Looking like Ohio St, Oregon, Penn St., USC and Michigan all have 2 tough conference games coming up and could beat each other up. It’s gonna get real fun to see who makes the CCG and who gets left in the dust.
For sure, more than one of the top 5 will get some one who gives them a game they didn’t expect. There could be an upset Saturday that blows up the Big10!
Conference needs to dump CTG … long season is enough. Michigan will never last vs that schedule and walk on qb. Let’s hope they figure it out later though lol
Did a little research today….the Boise State team that Oregon barely beat might make the playoffs. It’s expected to go 11-1. With the one being Oregon.
ORE’s got unexpected trouble with their O-line. The Ducks gave up four sacks to BOISE ST, eight so far this season.
Dan Lanning — “We sure like sweating around here,” Lanning said after squeaking by BOISE ST. “I have a sense of relief because of the result, but there are certainly a lot of things to fix.”
Obviously, you can’t just “buy” your way to success through the NIL.
Were it that uncomplicated, we’d be living in a different world.
Lots of today’s teams are now unfortunate examples of not having the numerous other program facets in place to make expensive player infusions work as planned.
There seems to be great culture and great coaching now at USC. The NIL seems around $8-9 million for the Trojans. We are getting way more bang for the buck than the Ducks.
USC benefitted greatly from having to come off a horribly disappointing year. Teams on a big mission to get drastically better are often overlooked, as USC has been this year. But the Ducks coasted in overconfident from a 12-2 ’23 record and everyone thinking they would automatically play OHIO ST for the B1G crown. Now Notre Dame suddenly faces a lost season after getting unexpectedly humiliated in South Bend by a 30-point dog who suddenly put Marcus Freeman in CFB hell. Definitely one of my favorite games to watch, ever. What a great start to the 2024 season. USC could… Read more »
Thank God for Lynn is right. This team is capable of beating every team on their schedule if they continue to play good football. Offense receivers need to clean up a bit, which I think they will. As long as nobody gets injured, we should be a good shot for the playoffs. We finally have a competitive team. The staff has done a wonderful job and Lincoln. Riley was definitely the right coach for the job. This is gonna be a fun season. Fight On! ✌️
Caleb in his first start with the Bears…….showing not much……3 and out and a short drive mostly running the ball……of note……he went back to pass and tried his slip from the DE’s…..they chased him back and tackled him for a 20 yard loss……welcome to the NFL Caleb…..that running around will only get you killed.
As the season progresses I will skip San Diego State and hope the odds are realistic for SC. Iowa really blew it for me, but Nebraska could be a sleeper.
If it makes you feel any better, I had a parlay ticket with ND, Iowa and SC. Fotunately, I had individual tickets on SC and Nebraska to get me back to even. Early season wagering is always tough because you really have no history on the team to really make a solid decision.
I thought Utah St would have trouble scoring but not this bad. Bryson Barnes must feel like it’s a long ways from Salt Lake City to Logan. He could have played the second half yesterday for Utah and blow out Baylor if he stayed put. Great job Trojans, no trap game, all business, no dumb penalties, backups look solid. The heavy run game was a nice change and didn’t show Michigan much. The sad part, we only get 6 home games and 2 maybe 3 will have an 8pm start, one on a Friday.
Not seeing another 8pm start aside that crap Friday game … Big 10 is learning the nation wants to watch USC.
Nebraska may be 9-1 when comes out. That will be a national game.
Whisky will not allow a 8 pm game (Big10 bluebloods still call the shots).
The B1G Network sure does a great job of covering the games and programs from top to bottom.
I’m watching the hour-long The Final Drive recap of top performances around the conference and USC is getting extensive coverage after last night’s cupcake destruction derby.
Ashley Adamson is on the desk, over from the old P12 Network. I’ve always thought she was pretty sharp.
I think ESPN’s Power Football Index considers things like strength of future schedule because it’s more of a predictor tool than a poll statement of where a team is today.
The AP ranks ND at #18.
For instance, ESPN’s FPI ranks TEXAS #1. Amazingly, the ‘Horns play GA in Austin on Oct. 19.
The only other ranked team TEXAS plays is #15 OU.
GA is ranked #2 by ESPN’s FPI measure. The Dawgs play both #4 ALA and #5OLE MISS away, so they are ranked lower than TEXAS here, while the AP puts them #1.
Thanks, makes sense, although I see only a #11 USC and #19 Louisville remaining on their schedule as ranked games. Maybe the predictor is predicting USC will be ranked # 3 or something by the time Nov 30 rolls around… 😉
Kamari Ramsey is so good. He does everything and shows up everywhere. Should be a consensus or unanimous All-American and a significant individual award winner. Best in the safety position at USC since Troy Polamalu IMO.
I know. There’s a long way to go. But I’ve seen enough. He’s everything you want in a DB. Thank God he ditched UCLA for USC. Another gift from D’Anton Lynn.
I think he’ll be gone because he looks and plays like a first-round pick to me.
But I sure like having him wearing Cardinal and Gold for now. Such an instinctively smart player who possesses the physical tools to match-up with his leadership and brains.
Was anyone able to watch the USC//Utah State game on BTN through Xfinity. I know there is a dispute between Xfinity & BIG10/Fox. Don’t know it is relevant but I live in Oregon.

Especially on replays it seemed.
Scary thought.
If I were Notre Dame, I’d already be thinking about D’Anton Lynn as a possible replacement for Marcus Freeman.

Why would I take another fake BS-title with more money if I could get a head coaching job I wanted elsewhere?
Maybe you would. I wouldn’t.
What ever it takes to keep these guys as long as possible. Let’s enjoy the ride while we got them.

USC Trojans Recruiting: 4-Star LB Ty Jackson (6-1, 200) Commits To USC
On Sunday, the Trojans added a 2025 coveted prospect, bolstering an already solid group of HS players.
Randall Sweet (SI.com) — Rated the No. 25 overall prospect and the nation’s #1 LB per On3, Ty Jackson is a huge addition to USC’s 2025 class.
The south Florida standout committed to D’Anton Lynn and Co over ALA, GA and MICH to name just a few.
With Jackson’s commitment, USC holds the nation’s No. 13 class per Rivals.com.
si.com
Just win baby. Players don’t want to play for losers.
We are going to land somewhere around top 5 once done.
are you referring to the rank of the recruiting class, Chris?
Sometimes a head coaching opportunity is simply too tough to turn down for guys with that ambition, regardless of increased money as a coord.
I’ve known a lot of coaches like that, such as Lane Kiffin and Ed O.

Is USC’s hard schedule turning soft? Looking like Ohio St, Oregon, Penn St., USC and Michigan all have 2 tough conference games coming up and could beat each other up. It’s gonna get real fun to see who makes the CCG and who gets left in the dust.
I’ve never thought USC’s schedule was as hard as some predicted. We get most of our tougher matchups at home.
But beware NEB on Nov. 16 when they show up in L.A. Both teams have byes before what I predict will be a wildly entertaining game.
For sure, more than one of the top 5 will get some one who gives them a game they didn’t expect. There could be an upset Saturday that blows up the Big10!
Frosh qb is for real … Nebby schedule is not difficult. Road game at OhioSt Oct 26 looks to be only loss before at USC.
Conference needs to dump CTG … long season is enough. Michigan will never last vs that schedule and walk on qb. Let’s hope they figure it out later though lol
Georgia at Texas mid Oct I believe
USC is ranked # 11 in the new AP poll. Oregon is #9 and Utah is #12.
Oregon has a $23 million NIL for football. As Nick Saban says,”If you don’t pay the right guys, you’ll be s— out of luck.”
USC could… Read more »
That ND loss was unimaginable… are you kidding, a complete no show. And paid 1 mil to NI to boot!
He always did
Thank God for Lynn is right.
That running around play looks like a Tebow meme I see on Facebook often. I hope Caleb gets better protection soon.

Maybe last night’s offensive strategy will finally dispense the notion that LR runs an air raid system.
I live in an area where Big10 network will not broadcast any west coast games. Not sure why??
Downer city. So unlucky for you. Hope you find a workaround. ✌
I wonder if BIG plus would do it for you……it’s not very expensive.
This is a statement issued by B1G and Fox Sports on how to watch and stream televised games and non-televised games.
No pre season guys on all Big10 defense, but I think we have multiple guys who will be on it at end of season.
Ramsey
Gentry

those 3 seem like 1st or 2nd team guys.
ESPN’s College Football Power Index — The FPI is the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season.
espn.com
ND at 10? Hmm.
The Dawgs play both #4 ALA and #5 OLE MISS away, so they are ranked lower than TEXAS here, while the AP puts them #1.
Thanks, makes sense, although I see only a #11 USC and #19 Louisville remaining on their schedule as ranked games. Maybe the predictor is predicting USC will be ranked # 3 or something by the time Nov 30 rolls around… 😉
I’m still going with 12-0, nobody that USC cannot beat.
Will be two games, where you shake your head always is
Kamari Ramsey is so good.
Amazing football player … hope he sticks around for 1 more year
I think he’ll be gone because he looks and plays like a first-round pick to me.
But I sure like having him wearing Cardinal and Gold for now. Such an instinctively smart player who possesses the physical tools to match-up with his leadership and brains.
