For the former Texas Tech assistants, Lincoln Riley starts a new QB and Dana Holgorsen debuts as the Cornhuskers’ new play-caller
NEBRASKA (5-4, LOST THREE STRAIGHT) AT USC (4-5, LOST FOUR OF FIVE)
Saturday, 1 p.m., L.A. Memorial Coliseum, FOX (Ch. 11)/710 AM
Luca Evans (OC Register) — Eight years after Dana Holgorsen first left Texas Tech, he went toe-to-toe with former disciple Lincoln Riley in 2015, Holgorsen’s West Virginia Mountaineers ran roughshod on Oklahoma, 44-24, in Riley’s first year calling plays in Norman.
For years to come, they clashed in annual shootouts, Holgorsen never able to outscore Riley’s humming Sooner offenses. Even when Holgorsen left for Houston in 2019, Riley beat him again, 49-31, in a season opener at Oklahoma, the last time to date the two Air Raid mechanics faced off.
Until now.
They are no strangers, yes. But they’ve never quite met like this. Holgorsen was away from collegiate football for the better part of a year, after being fired at Houston in 2023, only for Nebraska’s Matt Rhule to ring him up in the midst of the Cornhuskers’ offensive struggles and get him on a flight to Lincoln for a consult.
A few days later, Rhule announced Holgorsen was taking over – midseason – as Nebraska’s play-caller, and Riley suddenly had an old friend to scheme against.
“I was surprised, honestly,” Riley grinned, reflecting Tuesday on his reaction to Holgorsen’s hire. “I’d heard he’d gone there, but I didn’t have any idea whether that would happen or not.”
Suddenly, USC and Nebraska’s matchup Saturday has become a beautiful mystery, two programs bringing in help from the wings to buoy offenses that have treaded water for many weeks.
In comes Holgorsen as Nebraska’s offensive coordinator, an orchestrator of consistently potent attacks at West Virginia. In comes quarterback Jayden Maiava in place of Miller Moss for USC, Riley turning to the redshirt sophomore transfer from UNLV after evaluating film of a 21-point effort against Washington in which Moss threw another back-breaking second-half interception.
The fascinating question: Amid the sudden turnover, just how much will Riley and Holgorsen’s schemes – founded, similarly, on a spread-out passing attack and utilizing the run-game as a counter – change in the span of a couple of weeks?
“I mean, your first thought is obviously, I don’t think it’s going to be a radically new system,” Riley said Tuesday. “I’m sure there’s going to be some things different, or why make the change to begin with?”
It’s created some late nights for USC defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn across the past week, suddenly tasked with reviewing film of Holgorsen’s attacks at Houston and evaluating any staples he could bring to Nebraska’s offense. Holgorsen’s offenses at Houston ranked in the top 20 in the country in both 2021 and 2022, with a heavy dosage of peppering from then-Cougars quarterback Clayton Tune.
And the Cornhuskers, certainly, need a spark, freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola unable to generate much traction across a three-game losing streak. In particular, Nebraska has struggled heavily in finishing drives, ranked close to the bottom of the country in red-zone efficiency this season.
“Is there anything that he did that’s different, that we think that they could incorporate?” Lynn said Wednesday when asked about Holgorsen. “You can’t change too much, but you can definitely change some stuff over a bye.”
Equally as curious, meanwhile, is how Riley will restructure USC’s attack behind Maiava, a 6-foot-4 dual-threat athlete whom sophomore receiver Duce Robinson lauded as “naturally gifted.” For two weeks, USC’s head coach has largely resisted any notion that Maiava could help unlock a sputtering deep attack, but the lanky sophomore has shown a more natural ability than Moss to make plays off run-pass option looks in his spot snaps in 2024.
“We’ve been able to see him with a lot of reps now, and have, I think, a pretty decent feel of where his confidence is on certain things that we do,” Riley said, asked Tuesday how much he was collaborating withMaiava on USC’s offensive game plan, “and things that he really feels he can go out there and execute at a high level.”
The Trojans certainly wouldn’t come out and break out “some new offense,” Riley remarked a couple of weeks ago, tucking his cards close against his vest. Nebraska won’t, either, in all likelihood, Holgorsen publicly installed as the Cornhuskers’ play-caller for all of five days.
But Saturday afternoon, at the Coliseum, could prove the most fascinating chapter of a longstanding duel.

So much to say about the game. Maiava, Marks, no pressure on Raiola, etc, but the most unbelievable observation was I felt I was watching this game in Lincoln Neb. Walking through campus ( homecoming) and to our seats, it was obvious there were more visitors than I’ve ever seen. Ever. When the game started and ongoing it was a sea of red, some i thought were Trojan fans until they all stood up and cheered for a Husker great play. I felt half the stadium was Husker fans visually. When we were on offense on third down, we had… Read more »
Thanks for the crowd info. NEB fans are devoted like few others. Great to see Maiava pull it together in his first start. USC looks like a new team with him at the helm. Crazy, entertaining game.
Big destination trip for Husker alums … which LA games will be for old BIG teams.
Numerous charter flights for Huskers. Game sold out, attendance in 60,000 per Arbo. 20k Huskers per Arbo. Big win per Arbo.
Should have been called, in slow mo it was obvious but for the refs I think they were blocked from seeing it by our other defender. The reality is that we have lost out on bad calls before so you will get no complaint from me when one goes our way.
If you want to talk about bad luck for people in our contest; if USC’s field goal is not blocked, then they win and for me personally that blocked field goal cost me a nice payoff on a 3 team parlay(USC was the final leg on the pick).
Good grief did kicker take all day on that or what
kick the damn ball already
but SC is leaking it’s formations on kicks
2 of last 4 blocked
O for 5 on FGs since PennSt
We’ve lost too many close games. We’re in the Coliseum at Homecoming. NEB is nothing special. It’s our time. Plus Kamari Ramsey and Woody Marks are both playing great!
Terrible slowly developing play call on 3rd and 2. How about same formation and everything except Maiava fake the hand-off and roll around the right side of the line?
His best game was the first game he ever played for USC vs SJS to kick off the 2023 season in the Coliseum. He was spectacular that day. Not so much ever since. Weird.
Maiava looks decent. Our Defense Secondary is horrendous. Also our D-line doesn’t have ability to put any pressure on the QB. Even when we blitz. Nebraska’s O-Line is winning big time.

Hurray!
I guess we are back to .500.
and the Big Game is another Pac-12 after dark affair
There sure were some crazy plays off of weird deflections in this game, especially in favor of USC. It’s about time.
And for the first time this season USC is the beneficiary of Big10 no call refs.
PI could have arguably been called on the last play, but there would have been a riot!

Me too JW, that blocked field goal cost me big time. Fight On and looking forward to 2025. ✌
Be sure to check back for Football Bowl Contest.
Thanks for playing!👍

Justice was well-served…
Don’t change the uniforms, wear them the rest of the season!!
That 4th quart drive was the game winner. Great job.
Now we know there’s someone who calls a sore game than Riley
Finally … Bring on the Bruins!
Hang on Trojans!!!
This game solidifies that Lincoln Riley needs a dual threat mobile quarterback for his system to work.
I am asking because i don’t know—was Baker Mayfield mobile?
Yes in the college game.
Plus he was a great, tough competitor.
Miavia has that in him … he smells that goal line
any idea to go for two?
nice!
guess not
lets see if we can make 0.5 yard
yes we can!
Duel Threat QB shines.
Mason is missing blocks trying to lose again. Why is that horrible tackle still playing. He is worthless out there.
looks like Duce and Mailava are developing a goos connection
good cconnection
Ruhle, what a stupid timeout and then to come out with your offense and try to draw USC offsides………….
That timeout was very Riley-like…
You gotta figure the odds are with us today.
We’ve lost too many close games. We’re in the Coliseum at Homecoming. NEB is nothing special. It’s our time. Plus Kamari Ramsey and Woody Marks are both playing great!
Go Trojans!
Ceyair Wright is playing the game of his life.
Cue the one or two plays away from a win speech
Blocked! We suck on special teams, even with extra coaches!
Blocked FG. This is so USC.
What is this game starting to feel like?
Why, our specialty of course! A fourth quarter one-score loss!
4th quarter, here we go!!
Woody is a stud. I hope he gets a decent payday in the NFL.
I guess Woody is our offense player of the year
Branch is another in a long list of receivers who run backward and lose yards.
Go Woody!
Best player on our team; without a doubt.
I’ll never forget that play against MICH when he stripped that fumble.
Maiava needs to take off his helmet. Really if Riley is the quarterback whisperer his players are deaf.
well he does have a real full head of hair….
Stupid penalties. Stupid mistakes. Are we sure Helton is not on that sideline?
no, but there is a more expensive Helton over there.
two turnovers by the new kid. already responsible for 7 points, looks like a gimme field goal.
Raiola misses wide open receiver.
That was a huge gimme. That should have been 6.
nice fumble
Brutal.
Ugh, holding the ball with one hand, what a mistake
Such a shame Kamari Ramsey can’t stay healthy. Such a good player. 😥
didn’t look like he did anything but made a clean open field tackle—pull muscle?
Nobody knows. Injuries are secret stuff under LR. Nobody must know!
Gonna be a physical 2nd half as these already chippy teams fight for a shot at a bowl.
70 yards first half penalties and most of them dumb! What was it about Riley not being a barker or disciplinarian?
That’s what Colin Cowherd maintains. He insists LR doesn’t like to play that role.
And looking at all these penalties, it backs up his case.
Why did we need a time out when there was an injury?
Terrible slowly developing play call on 3rd and 2. How about same formation and everything except Maiava fake the hand-off and roll around the right side of the line?
Why is he not over at the sideline being grinded by Riley.
No respect and no discipline. Pathetic.
This crap used to happen all the time with Uncle Huggs. Team has no fear of our little genius head coach.
I am sick of Z Branch: an unnecessary penalty and fair catching a ball at the 35 when he only had 1 defender within 10 yards of him.
He’s overrated. The game has passed him by.
His best game was the first game he ever played for USC vs SJS to kick off the 2023 season in the Coliseum. He was spectacular that day. Not so much ever since. Weird.
Come on Riley, lets see your best 2 minute offense
you just saw it
😬
That was a wasted turnover opportunity
Yep. Gonna need some patience with Maiava. He’s missed some throws.
The three play calls weren’t great either/
Jayden is looking better after the first two series
Our average QB play is better than their bad QB play.
I’m not sure what all the hubbub is about Dylan Raiola. Seems erratic, inaccurate, and nothing special.
Hope he doesn’t come to life in the second half vs USC and start a highlight reel of some sort with a bowl game on the line for both teams.
We’ve collectively come to this conclusion a long time ago, that is, we just don’t have the offensive or defensive lineman to compete.
But knowing this doesn’t make it any easier to watch.
Personally, minus Henson, I think this coaching staff has the ability to get it right
I m not sold on LR figuring it out. These penalties are ridiculous. He needs to get control of that
Maiava needs to settle in, he isn’t there yet. Nice to see his mobility though.
Maiava looks decent. Our Defense Secondary is horrendous. Also our D-line doesn’t have ability to put any pressure on the QB. Even when we blitz. Nebraska’s O-Line is winning big time.
Lucky TDs count just as much! ✌ Good for Jayden’s confidence.
I was reading Woody Marks lips and he said “I don’t care who the qb is, just give me the damn ball”.
I seem to remember Keyshawn Johnson saying that.
And they were both correct
yep!
💯 give him the damn ball. 😂
Dylan Raiola seems to get nicked up a lot. Could be a factor later in the game.
I’ll never understand why these guys slide before they get the all-important first down. Now they are saying it’s maybe because Raiola has a bad back.
They showed both of Jayden’s touchdown passes. I hope he keeps hitting his guys
Nice! TD
I am happy for any kind of TD…..nice or ugly!
