USC showered with boos in unraveling loss to Stanford
Fans leave early in the Trojans’ lopsided loss against the Cardinal
Adam Grosbard (OC Register) — LOS ANGELES — You can take your pick of which moment was the actual nail in the coffin Saturday in No. 14 USC’s 42-28 loss to Stanford. When the reliable Drake London let a third-down pass slip through his hands to be intercepted and returned 31 yards for a touchdown. When the Trojans failed to score a third-quarter touchdown for the seventh time in eight games despite an 11-point halftime deficit.
Or when Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee rushed for a touchdown with 25 seconds left in the third quarter. That was certainly when many of the fans at the Coliseum decided it was over, heading directly for the exits. Those that remained seemed to do so only to boo after every failed drive, or missed tackle, or penalty.
The game was a disaster anyway you cut it for USC (1-1, 0-1 in Pac-12).
The Trojans went 5-for-14 on third down, averaging just 3.0 yards on those conversion attempts. They only gained an average of 5.4 ypp overall compared to Stanford’s 7.4.
And that was just the offense.
As for the other side of the ball, which was the starring attraction in the season opener? The USC defense allowed a Stanford team that gained 233 yards in four quarters a week ago to gain 248 in the first half at the Coliseum.
That might be the worst part: Stanford (1-1, 1-0) looked dreadful just a week ago in a 17-point loss to Kansas State. That’s why the Trojans entered the weekend as 17-point favorites against the Cardinal.
Instead of coasting to victory as the line would suggest, USC suffered its most lopsided loss to an unranked opponent since 2018.
And the discipline that USC showed a week ago with four penalties? Well, the Trojans regressed in that department, drawing nine flags to give up 109 yards of field position and five Stanford first downs.
Things started about as poorly as possible for USC. Kicker Parker Lewis was ejected for targeting on the opening kickoff, the offense had consecutive two-and-outs and the defense gave up its first big play of the season, with Stanford running back Nathaniel Peat breaking free to the outside for an 87-yard touchdown run.
It looked as if USC had settled down with a methodical, 15-play, 95-yard touchdown drive capped by a two-yard run from Keaontay Ingram, helped across the goal line by center Brett Neilon to tie the game at the start of the second quarter.
But the Trojans’ comedy of errors continued on the next defensive drive. USC committed three costly penalties: A dead-ball unnecessary roughness infraction from Chris Steele, a pass interference on Isaac Taylor-Stuart and, lastly and most crucially, a neutral zone infraction by Joshua Jackson before a successful Stanford field goal.
Rather than take the three points, Stanford opted to go for it all from the USC 3. McKee rolled outside to his right and found Elijah Higgins for a touchdown.
The final indignity came after USC quarterback Kedon Slovis missed London in the end zone on third-and-five. The Trojans settled for Alex Stadthaus’ first career field goal and, they hoped, a four-point halftime deficit.
But the Cardinal drove 64 yards in four plays, helped in large part by a 49-yard completion to Austin Jones. McKee found Brycen Tremayne in the back of the end zone for another touchdown a 21-10 halftime lead.
As USC ran to the locker room, the players were showered with boos. Head coach Clay Helton’s halftime interview played on the big screen at the game was drowned out by the fans’ displeasure.

What is it going to take for Clay Helton to be fired??? I would say last nights performance tops the list of Helton’s failures at USC. Complete and total lack of discipline. Lack of development of players. the amount of yards that were given up on penalties is mind blowing. Couple that with the talent that we have over Stanford is inexcusable!!! We have more depth at the Running Back position than Stanford and they made our Running game look like a joke. SC is not a Pro team. Stop running pro style air raid offence without establishing an identity… Read more »
On a day where Florida St lost to Jville state, Notre Dame barely got by Toledo, USC comes out as uninspired and unprepared as ever, I really believe the administration has put their emphasis on basketball and abandoned football. I see no concern that the team looks terrible, cant score, no discipline and cant win big games. Coming soon there will be an empty Coliseum and it wont be because of Covid! LSU fired Les MIles in 2016 after 4 games and a 2-2 start (with a national championship under his belt). Lane Kiffin, Coach O, Sark and now Helton… Read more »
Rodney Dangerfield doing comedy always started with “What a crowd! What a crowd!” I don’t know what Rodney would say to the SC faithful raining down boos at the SC players during halftime. ‘What a crowd’ might take on a different meaning… And what a game! Stanford’s biggest games are with SC and Cal. The Indians, err, Cardinal or Tree, or whatever, came to play! And to win! All night long the Cardinal played its cards right, even declining 3-points and going for 7… A poor game for the Trojans, but it happens. Just look at the betting games yesterday.… Read more »
Thanks LJ, Satyrdancing and I are just happy we aren’t in last place.😉
“If the odds are 50/50, I don’t stand a chance!”
― Rodney Dangerfield
Rodney Dangerfield jokes about Clay Helton:
Clay asked his wife, on a scale of 1-10, how good a coach am I? She said you know I’m no good at fractions.
Clay told his psychiatrist that everyone hates him. He said Clay was being ridiculous – everyone hasn’t met him yet.
Helton told Bohn his coaching is like wine, it gets better with age. Bohn locked him in the cellar.
In high school, when Helton played football he got no respect. He shared a locker with a mop.
What a crowd, I tell ya!
Just to take our minds off last nights manure pile.
In John’s contest;
The dogs covered in 8 of the 10 games, 5 of them won. The reason I don’t put real money down on college football. Thanks John for reminding me. But I’ll be back big next week!
In the always enlightening words of The Cat Helton: “It’s only game two.”
Maybe USC will still win the Pac-12 and make the 2021 CFB playoffs. Maybe USC will finish with another losing record under Clay.
You be the judge. Fight On! ✌
More Cat Quotes after last night:
We’ll watch this tape, we’ll get it cleaned up
I could tell in that in that locker room how bad it hurt them, which is a good thing.
They’re going to come back and work extremely hard on to go try to get 1-0 for next week.
It’s a 28-point night, which is usually not us, we’re typically a 35-point plus team (11 of the last 34 games SC has scored 35+, 32% is typical?)
His dumb, repetitive quotes don’t faze me in the least anymore.
Helton’s career is officially over at USC whether he knows it or not. It’ll be interesting to see how Mike Bohn decides to phase Helton out and who he is allowed to bring in. That’s the story about USC football now. After last night, we are way past wins and losses mattering IMHO.
Bohn hired Luke Fickell at Cincy. Other than Ohio State who has a better chance at him? If he is the guy.
Nobody even knows if Luke Fickell, a thoroughly midwest guy, wants to try to coach USC out of the doldrums in far-left California. Maybe Folt won’t like him.
This part should be fun. Coaching searches are always insanely interesting. The future of USC football hangs in the balance. Which way will the pendulum swing?
USC plays UCLA in the Coliseum on Nov. 20. Are there any takers who will actually go public and predict a Trojan win? Anybody?
When you think about it, knowing any new HC hiring will have to pass the “Carol Test”, that in itself brings caution about what transcends after Helton. So far, that may well be a sobering issue?
I am not willing to predict a win in any of the remaining games.
I am hoping that David Shaw’s stock has not gone up sufficiently to make him a candidate in the eyes of Chairman foltie and Mayor caruso. Please God, no!
Don’t worry. Shaw is a STAN man all the way. He’s a Cardinal lifer.
Plus, now that he has finished with Helton for 2021, I expect Shaw’s team to return to the mediocre outfit they were meant to be this season. Back-to-back-to-back games against UCLA, ORE, and ASU will snuff out the Indians but good.
What kind of football program culture produces results like last night’s nightmare in the Coliseum? Faith, family, and football? It’s clear the motto for Clay’s calamitous coaching needs appending. How about “faith, family, and buffoonish, bothered, and bewildered football” (to borrow and paraphrase a line from the great Rogers and Hart tune from Pal Joey)?
We need a full page add in the local paper that reads: MIKE BOHN DO YOUR JOB!
Clay Helton was outcoached in every aspect of the Stanford game. His offense is so predictable a mediocre team can beat it. The media disrespected us in the local market the morning paper tells us to go online for details and the local televised broadcast preempted the entire first half for two innings of baseball. This falls on you Mike Bohn. Everyone from media to the cheerleaders has told you to fire Clay Helton NOW DO WHAT YOU ARE PAID TO DO!
I give this comment a MILLION Thumbs Up ↑↑↑↑↑
For New York baseball, at least go to the game on the west coast or California.
That one blew me away.
Love your thoughts! And if you truly care about the state of the program, don’t attend games or give them money until Gomer is kicked to the curb.
We were lead to believe OC Harrell sets up the offense and calls the plays. Are you saying Helton is now sticking his nose into the offense mechanism as we once feared?
One other point…..watch a Kelly coached team vs USC……without even a moment of analyzation……energy vs……why are we here.
I now live in a really suburb of Indy so the game ended at 2:30 am our time….for 70 year old….geez pac 12…..do you want to recruit or don’t you. Especially when your weather at 5 is so beautiful compared to our humidity.
I believe Fox said it was the latest start ever for a college game for them. I thought even ending at 11pm was late! Sure was a waste of a Saturday night.
Amen…..unless it contributes to ending our mourning for the program…..come on Boner.
Bet the recruits watching were really impressed…..not in a good way. When your kicker is targeting….to me……discipline……but we knew all that. Its just amazing that some folks on other sites actually thought that a DL made up of three star freshmen and undersized players out of position could play up to power 5 standards. An OL that was horrible last year now featuring two freshmen tackles did amazingly well……but……the USC offense operates like my old 1955 Chevy……really a jumble of parts with no really great governor that shakes rattles and rolls. As I posted many times…..everybody is going to run… Read more »
When EVERY USC fan on this planet (including Allen and John ) get convinced …..CONVINCED (and agree)about what I wrote earlier >>>>> “but I am now starting to feel that USC will NEVER NEVER see a top 5 rating in the AP Top 25 Poll ever again” then LA Coliseum ……..will………..be ………..EMPTY !
I had to turn it off. As like everyone else my disgust with the football program was to much to take. How in the world could a HC continue in that position with the results he gets week after week. A man of character would resign. If Bohn is now resigned to being a yes man and doesn’t make a move then we know USC football is history.

Does Los Angeles have a Community College ? …….And does that Community College have a football team ? Maybe we can play them AND LOSE 60-0 to a Community College !
To get rid of Helton there is a part of me that wants to schedule Montana University and LOSE to Montana University 60-0
I can not watch my favorite team OF MY LIFE (I stay up until 2-2:30 AM NY Time to watch this team) be at this level much longer . If they continue at this level and his job security is safe I might stop and come back when (and if) they change . And Allen and John ……This IS THE BEST BLOG on the internet but I am now starting to feel that USC will NEVER NEVER see a top 5 rating in the AP Top 25 Poll ever again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The images that is remaining with me from that DEBACLE is in his press conference Helton keeps referring to “Judge us at the end of the season “……..And MAN he smiled way too much during last nights press conference after the game .I said it last night and I will say it again NOW …..He looks like a man that feels he has a very………very ………very good JOB SECURITY status !!!!!!!!!!!!! (Almost looks quite confident about his job security) . BOY IF HE IS RIGHT ABOUT HIS JOB BEING VERY VERY SAFE ………….
It was clear from Stanford’s first possession that David Shaw brought his team to play football and Clay Helton brought his to take a nap. In my 56 years of watching SC play, whether on TV or live, never have I seen a team not prepared to play, sleepwalking through the game and the most aggressive play being a kicker thrown out on the opening kickoff for targeting. I went to bed at halftime as SC doesn’t have an Anthony Davis to run back the second half kickoff. From what I could tell, the second half was as bad or… Read more »
This is the worst I’ve seen USC since the worst of Paul Hackett. The fiasco against STAN was a very special USC performance, even for Clay the Cat Helton. USC was totally noncompetitive in the 2nd half. If that’s good enough for Carol Folt and Mike Bohn, so be it.
I don’t remember ever feeling so unemotional about USC being beaten down badly by another team. Watching USC get slaughtered and seeing Clay Helton’s bewildered, buffoonish face absorb the nightmare was…undoubtedly a sign of things to come.
If USC doesn’t drop out of the Top 30, something’s fishy.
SC should drop out of the top 30, in the Pac 12!
You know that things need to change when beat writers are calling the program they cover a dumpster fire.
