USC’s next defensive coordinator needs to come from outside the program
USC DL coach Eric Henderson before the 45-31 win over MICH ST in September. (Carlin Stiehl/LAT)
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — The most critical offseason of Lincoln Riley’s tenure with the Trojans lies ahead. The next few weeks especially could make or break the coach’s future at USC. And it all starts with hiring a new defensive coordinator.
Whoever is hired steps into a pressure cooker from the very start. The heat already has cranked up on USC’s coach. If the Trojans don’t make the College Football Playoff, Riley and his coordinator-to-be-named-later could be looking for new jobs at this time next year. And just making the playoff is going to require serious progress on a defense that must replace key players at every level and faces Indiana, Ohio State and Oregon next season.
It might be tempting, with that in mind, to try to maintain continuity, to circle the wagons and promote from within, hoping it’s enough to push USC into the playoff. This idea started taking hold as days dragged on after D’Anton Lynn’s exit and fans’ panic started to pique: Maybe it was most prudent, the logic went, to promote defensive line coach Eric Henderson to coordinator.
After all, he called defensive plays in the bowl game. He’s a beloved assistant and top-notch recruiter. Not to mention that Georgia Tech, his alma mater, is interested in him for its staff.
Hiring someone else might mean not only losing Henderson in the staff shuffle, but also potentially losing key players or recruits along his defensive line. Several of those players, including five-star freshman Jahkeem Stewart, have publicly endorsed Henderson for the job.
Look, Henderson is a really good coach. And it’s great that his players think so highly of him. But now is not the time to make him — or anyone else on USC’s staff — the defensive coordinator.
That’s not a reflection on Henderson or secondary coach Doug Belk so much as it’s a reflection on the moment. Riley can’t afford for this coordinator hire, his third in five years, to fail. Not after all the resources that USC has poured into this next season being the culmination of its overhaul of the football program. To hand the defense to anyone other than a proven coach with a track record of immediate success is a risk that Riley just can’t take. Not now.
The question is whether any proven coaches are willing to take a risk with USC.
That’s not to say the right coach can’t step in next season and immediately make the Trojans a top-25 defense. Pete Kwiatkowski seemed to fit that profile. He has deep college experience, a close connection to athletic director Jennifer Cohen and a defense that just two years ago was among the top in college football. That he was let go by Texas just before USC lost its coordinator seemed like kismet.
But as of Sunday night, according to the Athletic, Kwiatkowski was trending toward becoming Stanford’s defensive coordinator.
Stanford.
Now I don’t know where Kwiatkowski stood in the pecking order of candidates for USC. Nor is USC doomed if it doesn’t hire him.
But that’s the profile of a coordinator that should get the job. A proven coach capable of getting the best out of USC’s talent and turning the Trojans into a playoff-caliber defense in the way his predecessors couldn’t.
Because if this doesn’t work, Riley won’t get the chance to hire a fourth.
Transfer portal notes, Week 1
Former AUB WR Cam Coleman, the most coveted player who’s not a QB in the portal, is scheduled to meet with USC. (Michael Woods / AP)
—USC had an immediate need at the cornerback position after DeCarlos Nicholson exhausted his eligibility, Braylon Conley entered the portal and DJ Harvey declared for the NFL Draft. Iowa State cornerback Jontez Williams became the first big-name commitment out of the portal for USC, and he’s a big get indeed.
Williams started just five games last year before suffering a season-ending injury but was a standout and All-Big 12 second-team selection in 2024. Securing a No. 1 CB was always a top priority for USC in the portal, and the Trojans managed to find one within two days. A good start. Presumably Williams was paid to start next to Chasen Johnson or Marcelles Williams next season.
—USC is in the market for a top receiver and has a visit set up for Thursday with Cam Coleman, the most coveted portal player who’s not a quarterback. Landing Coleman, a top-five prospect in the 2024 class who played at Auburn, would be a huge coup — and Riley has shown a propensity for pulling in top transfer receivers in the past.
Coleman, though, is an Alabama native and is considering Alabama, Texas, Texas Tech and Texas A&M too. His previous recruiting cycle revolved around SEC country. He’s also going to command a massive payday, maybe the largest for any player outside of a quarterback. USC may find it more prudent to use that money elsewhere.
—If USC can’t land Coleman, there still are plenty of viable options available. Expect USC to be aggressive in finding at least one transfer receiver to join the fray. North Carolina State wideout Terrell Anderson, who led the Wolfpack in receiving, visited USC on Sunday. Texas wideout DeAndre Moore Jr. spent time at St. John Bosco and Los Alamitos High, where he was teammates with outgoing Trojans wideout Makai Lemon.
—Linebacker remains a position of significant need, and USC managed to snag the first one that came to visit.
Washington’s Deven Bryant was third on the Huskies in tackles. But while he doesn’t strike me as a difference-maker at that position, he was graded higher against the run than any of USC’s linebackers.
—Others to watch on the defensive line: Penn State end Zuriah Fisher, who visited this past weekend, and Clemson tackle Stephiylan Green.
Extra points
—Of the football players who have yet to be signed, three stand out: Quarterback Husan Longstreet, defensive tackle Jide Abasiri and defensive back Alex Graham. Longstreet is obvious. As a five-star passer prospect, he’d be the heir apparent after Jayden Maiava if he decides to stick around. But it’s a surprise these days if anyone does. Abasiri is an athletic marvel with a ton of unrealized potential as a pass rusher, and Graham earned a ton of praise before having his freshman season derailed by injuries. Keeping two of the three would be a coup.
—The USC men were dominated by Michigan in a 30-point loss. Now Michigan State awaits in East Lansing. That’s a brutal one-two punch coming out of the holiday break, and the Trojans didn’t look ready for the fight Friday. Michigan jumped out to an 11-0 lead, forcing six turnovers in the process, and USC never fully bounced back. No one, outside of maybe reserve forward Jaden Brownell, had anything approaching a good game. The Trojans don’t have long to bounce back, with Michigan State on tap at Breslin Center on Monday. The Spartans are coming off a tough loss at Nebraska and will have something to prove. USC will have its work cut out for it.
—The USC women don’t have the frontcourt to hang with teams like UCLA. Lindsay Gottlieb wasn’t able to lure any top-tier transfer bigs in the offseason, and while that lack of a frontcourt doesn’t always show up against lesser or smaller teams, it was an obvious issue against UCLA and Lauren Betts. I’m not sure where Gottlieb goes from here with the frontcourt if she hopes to be competitive against UCLA the next time around. Maybe Gerda Raulusaityte takes a step forward in the coming weeks before their next meeting. Maybe Kennedy Smith, at 6 feet 1, could just start at the five? (Only half-kidding.) Whatever she does, Gottlieb will be working around this problem the rest of this season.
—Everyone agrees that the college football calendar has to change. So let’s do something about it. There are still two weeks until the College Football Playoff title game. The regular season ended the last weekend of November. That’s way too long to wait even before you consider that three of the four teams that had byes — and the long layoff that comes with them — lost in this playoff. Teams with a bye are now 1-7. But the problems with the calendar go deeper than that.
Eventually, when the playoff moves to 16 teams — or more — we’ll do away with conference championship week and move everything up. If you played the first round during championship week, you could be done by the latest on Jan. 8. That’s much more reasonable.

Interesting insight into Cignetti. LR is as opposite as a coach can be from this, and is why he is still floundering after 4 years.

Everyone Has Their Problems! Washington has ‘no intention’ to release QB who signed deal but entered transfer portal anyway The Athletic (staff) — Just days after Demond Williams Jr. signed a contract with Washington to return to Seattle for his junior season, the quarterback reversed course and announced Tuesday night he would enter the transfer portal. The shocking decision sends ripples through the Washington program and the college football transfer portal. Williams had signed a contract agreeing to return to the Huskies, a Washington source close to the negotiations told The Athletic on Tuesday night. Yet, Williams said on Instagram that transferring was… Read more »
Somebody got to him with a number that made him shake…….Its obvious. So you want to stay…..how bout 10 million.
They probably passed on PK because he wanted to hire his own assistants. That may have been a mistake
Maybe but I do like the backfield coaches.
If Jen C wanted to shock the cfb world, she could fire LR and hire John Harbaugh. Anybody vote for that grand, bold move? I would!
I’m in!
If you could get JH, sure, who wouldn’t go for that. Easier said than done.
Really? Whats your deal? .😁
John, not Jim, but it’s probably a family saying, so sure, why not?
We would still be on the hook for Riley’s payout plis giving Harbaugh a hefty salary. Not sure we can afford those two things.
True. USC football is in a box. That might be something DC candidates are wary of as well.
I’d like to know what Jen Cohen really thinks of Riley. His mess is starting to spill over onto her a little bit. Trojan fans are getting more and more impatient with the prolonged mediocrity of USC football and she’s seen as the decision maker.
The B1G is proving to be a much more challenging conference for USC. What was once speculation has turned into a reality, as the clock ticks away.
I don’t believe the Big Ten is beyond the USC football program. It’s the HC who holding the program back and being well paid for it!
Exactly.
USC lands transfer portal commitment from Michigan State DL Alex VanSumeren Erik McKinney (WeAreSC) — The USC Trojans struck again in the transfer portal on Tuesday, landing former MICH ST DL Alex VanSumeren. The 6-foot-3, 295-pound DL started the final 24 games of his MICH ST career, including this past season against the Trojans in the Coliseum. He finished this season tied for third on the team with 52 tackles, including two for loss and 1.5 sacks. He was a four-star 2022 prospect, ranked as the nation’s No. 232 overall prospect and No. 27 DL out of Essexville (MI) Garber… Read more »
This hunt for a new DC is turning into a eye opener about USC football. It’s still going on well into open portal season on even though many people inside USC knew D’Anton Lynn was gone long before he officially took the PSU job. Unfortunately, we have to start wondering if good candidates may not be willing to take what should be a huge DC opportunity because of realistic doubts about how much longer LR will be HC at USC. With all the talk that making the playoffs is a requirement for LR in 2026, or else, how many excellent… Read more »
Allen I think you are spot on with a major reason this DC job is still open. If it winds up an in-house choice due to your reasoning, I would hope Doug Belk is chosen due to his experience and time spent in CFB.
And if a DC is too dynamic a personality with HC aspirations LR would not like him. Promoting within, Belk or Henderson with tell the tale.
I think in reality the 2027 is the last shot Riley has. Just mho.
Nobody I know thinks Riley will get this team to the playoffs in 2026, especially after USC flopped all over the place again in the Alamo Bowl, which reminded people a lot of Riley’s Cotton Bowl fiasco. None-the-less, the heat is increasing on Riley all the time. If he loses 4-5 reg season games as expected in 2026, even though ND (another loss) is off the schedule, who knows how much appetite USC will have for him? He’d already be gone if USC had the money. Hopefully, he’ll show enough in 2026 to demonstrate he’s worth keeping on. Replacing coaches… Read more »
I think Riley will be on really thin ice if Longstreet leaves when he should have played in the 2nd half of the Alamo Bowl when Maiava was throwing the game away.
One of the problems may have been that PK wanted to select his own assistants on defense. I think they will probably have that problem with any really acomplished DC.They might want to look at somebody from division II or III but only if you can’t find the right guy in division I
As far as I am concerned, this DC search is a red herring — or to mix my metaphors, it is akin to putting lipstick on a pig. We’ve seen enough from Riley. We know what we’ve got. It is time to move on and work on a new regime. You can’t assume there will be immediate carnage on the recruit and portal front. Recruits and transfers see the same thing we’re seeing. You’ll have some movement, but it may net out positively in the end.
Rock your thinking can’t be dismissed. No matter what Riley says about leaving the defense to the defensive coaches, Riley playcalls & manages games for his own offensive side benefit and that usually means putting the defense in bad situations. As long as he is HC, this just won’t change as I believe it’s the only way he knows.
Reality has arrived as far as USC men’s basketball in the B1G.
After getting demolished by #2 MICH 96-66, 12-2 USC is pitiful again against #12 MICH ST and losing 64-40 with eight mins to go.
As you know, the thing about basketball…..you bring in 2 great players and get lucky with a few under the radar types…..you’re in the final 4. Illinois lost just about everybody this year off a good team……lol…..the coach can hardly talk to the team this year…..5 from Croatia area with a few leftovers. By the time it’s over maybe final 4. The BIG has not won an NCAA title in a long time….but…..unlike football…..the mid level of the conference has always been good. Just have not had the elite teams. Mike K used to vacuum all the Chicago talent away… Read more »
You bet.
In their last 2 1/2 conference games (the only 3 losses of the year), SC has been outscored by 83. 83 points in 5 halves of basketball.
Terrell Anderson is a really good receiver. He can certainly catch it in a crowd.

USC always has great WRs, without fail. Why can’t we fix so many other much weaker positions?
Why can’t USC become strong on both sides of the trenches, when that used to be a Trojan calling card, and everyone knows it’s the key to success?
USC 5-star QB Husan Longstreet considering entering transfer portal
Lorenza Reyna (ClutchPoints) — CBS Sports college football insider Matt Zenitz revealed Monday that the prized five-star QB is weighing his options.
Zenitz — “USC five-star freshman QB Husan Longstreet has had communication with USC that he’s considering entering the transfer portal, sources tell CBSSports.
.
“No final decision has been shared with the team as of yet.”
USC DB Kevin Longstreet, Husan’s older brother, is already going into the Portal.
“We don’t know yet,” Longstreet’s father Kevin said of Husan’s plans. “We’re going to meet with (Lincoln) Riley again.”
Would $5 million keep Husan and is he worth it?
I don’t even have any idea what Maiava is being paid. Nor do I know how much USC coaches even like Longstreet. They see him in practice every day and here we are on Jan 5 wondering if he’s headed to the portal. There is some indication money has gotten a little tighter around USC since the Alamo floperooni. If Longstreet bolts, I will have been totally off-base in regards to his staying at USC. I thought he was a lock. But it seems now that maybe the market has changed. Maybe his demand in terms of both money and… Read more »
Not getting any snaps in the Alamo Bowl has to hurt our chances here, I don’t know what Riley was thinking.
GM Chad Bowden might be wondering the same thing. I’m pretty sure Bowden is glad D’Anton Lynn is gone.
I’d like to know what Bowden is doing about our new DC, who he really wants, and how he feels about USC’s efforts to add or retain all-important talent.
Things are happening so fast. News is dropping at breakneck speed. What’s next?
What does Bowden have to do with hiring coaches? I thought his job was players and NIL.
So you think Bowden has no say in who gets hired as the DC? I disagree totally. He’s the GM and Riley has already made many bad hires.
Bowden is better at a lot of things than Riley is and it’s well known that Bowden occupies a very powerful position.
Thinking…..Riley…….interesting.
“…I don’t know what Riley was thinking.” Do I really need to respond to that,PN4SC?🤣
This is not to mention getting very few snaps in the games where SC was far ahead and in control. I thought that was curious and a signal that Longstreet wasn’t all that good? If I were him. I’d go to a program where he could get on the field.
Longstreet stats, GP 4, passing 13-15, 81yds, 1 TD, rushing 11 att, 76 net yds, 2 TDs.
So, how many plays did he get?
26, 15 pass attempts, 11 runs. 8.67 plays per TD. Not bad.
Thanks. Good stats, but very small percentage of total plays. Hence, (I believe), his dissatisfaction with LR.
This kid wants to play. He’s the future of this program and although Maiava has done an average to good job, Longstreet needs to play now or be in a position to seriously compete. He knows once Maiava announced his return, his butt is on the bench while possessing the throwing and running skills similar to past QB greats under LR. With this insane 2026 schedule upon us, we are going to need something to survive, some of that “it” we talk about. Having a formidable defense developed by an experienced DC wouldn’t hurt either.
This is all supposed to be LR’s wheelhouse, right? USC’s QB situation should be the one area where he kicks total butt. Yet Maiava looked terrible in the Alamo Bowl and Longstreet might be in the portal when I wake up tomorrow.
And who knows who USC’s fave DC candidate really is? Anybody?
Why is anybody surprised. Vintage Riley. Trying to hide Husan by not playing him. Trying to pay for two starters at QB. A real cluster F—. Other coaches can watch HS film and see the few plays he did play for USC. QB wheelhouse……ok…..at one time he did some great things……or was it the players who did……Caleb was a mess when he left……except for his raw talent……it was two years for a very talented NFL coach to straighten him out……..Maiava is barely average after two years. Husan might be positioning for a nice check but wants to stay…..I hope so… Read more »
Just imagine if USC had a smashing good DC. After watching Seattle and Darnold beat the 49ers and limiting them to three points, it reminded me of how great it was to follow a team that could shut down opponents when it mattered. That’s how Hoosier fans feel nowadays. The had to wait a long, long time. But it finally happened for them.
Exactly…….get those LB’s we had in the good old days…..the born killers that were built like Samson and could run like the road runner and hit like a steel wall. Someone told Riley defense was important and also told him the line was important so last year he got a few….and forgot to take in LB’s. See anybody that even looks somewhat like Rey Maualuga on the Trojans. I don’t. One thing I can’t figure…..with all the talent we have had at DB the past 5 years why we have been pitiful at pass defense. The guys don’t even know… Read more »
You mean LBs like Brian Cushing?
If it turns out that USC somehow loses Husan Longstreet, well … I’ll cross that bridge if we come to it.
I think if we saw a Cushing on the roster he would stick out. Nothing against a Trojan team that plays hard but we are playing with our best being something else. That says it all. Look at the arms on that monster. When he hit you…..you got up thinking…..how long left in this game.
Our LB’s look like they have been skipping lunch.
and just imagine….we had him…..and Rey…..and Mathews at the same time. Compare that crew to what we have now…..even when the new recruits play…….it’s a bad joke.
In that era, we had three great linebackers on the field at one time–Cushing, Ray Malaluga (sp?) and some one else who I can’t remember…. Gosh those were the days!
Clay Matthews III. What a defense!
If we lose him to the portal, the blame falls totally on Riley for being dumber than a sack of hammers. All he had to do was let him play for a quarter in the useless bowl game. Maybe he was afraid that Husan would show up Maiava and cause a big controversy. We don’t need another one. We already have one regarding the mental capacity of the HC.
Hooray! USC brings back a big piece for 2026 Erik McKinney (WeAreSC) — The USC Trojans continue to announce the names of players the program has re-signed for the 2026 season and a significant one got locked in on Monday. DT Jide Abasiri was one of the very few names unaccounted for when it comes to either being re-signed or entering the transfer portal. The 6-foot-5, 295-pound lineman will be back for his junior season in 2026. This is significant news for the Trojans. Abasiri showed really solid development through his soph season, which was his first earning legitimate minutes and snaps on defense. He started… Read more »
Top Transfer QB Commits To Texas Tech, Will Command North Of $5 Million How much is Husan Longstreet angling for from USC? A 6-foot-3 native of Denton (TX), Sorsby reportedly visited LSU and TT in the 48 hours prior to his decision. The new faces of college football
Everybody loves Sam Darnold Colin Cowherd — “Seattle is the odds on favorite to win the Super Bowl. They are long, fast, twitchy and athletic. They have the best personnel manager in the League in John Schneider. They don’t miss on Draft picks. “Everybody in their building loves Sam Darnold. Everybody. He’s a relatable guy. Quarterbacks always get special treatment. But you can’t ask for it. You never hear that Darnold thinks he’s above the team like you do with some quarterbacks. No surprise here. Is this finally the end for 74-yr PC as a coach?
Pete Carroll his a HOF HC in college and NFL. Time to move on Pete. An opportunity for USC to bring him back, teach a class, consult with the football program and mentor Riley. Saban turned Kiffin and Sark into elite HCs. Pete could do the same for Riley.
Pete and Riley together? Really? That’s a laugher IMO. Strange bedfellows.
Whatever special stuff Pete still has, and it used to be a lot, he could never transfer to the eternally stubborn, ho hum Riley.
It is quite telling to think it’s a laugher that eternally stubborn ho hum Riley would turn down consulting and advice from PC. Who wouldn’t want a mentor? Kiffin went to Saban and PC for sounding boards on the LSU job. If Cohen offered and Riley refused, boy I would be working hard to get him out the door if I was her. Allen sounds like you are done with LR.
Did you ever think that Carroll may have no desire to be Riley’s mentor? I guess not. If it were really in the cards, they could have started this all up four years ago, or three years ago when LR fell off a cliff. Or when Pete started teaching USC classes last year. What does Saban have to do with Carroll? Nothing. When Kiffin and Sark hooked up with Saban, they were both totally down and out, looking for coaching positions and Saban was easily the best HC in CFB. Kiffin and Sark became employees who satisfied specific needs of… Read more »
No way. Pete would suck all the oxygen from the room and LR would disappear in the shadows. And then the problems would begin, like a player mutiny in which they all listen to PC and ignore LR. It would never work. I can easily imagine more reporters seeking out PC than LR….LR would always be 2nd fiddle.
Can you imagine intimidated LR trying to level off with legendary Pete Carroll?
Looks like an SNL skit to me. But I wouldn’t stay up to see it.
Good point, it would have to be one on one with coaches, not involve players. I just thought if Pete has something beneficial to bring and all parties were on board it could be potentially hugely helpful to the program. Just a fantasy in my head. Wonder if he will teach his class this year? He does have an attachment to USC.
Pete will be okay… look what firing Kiffin by the Raiders did for that kid.
I have read a lot of comments about player commitment and culture on the previous thread. I seem to remember Pete Carroll making the team learn the words to Fight On and All Hail, and they sang those songs in the locker room.
I could be wrong, but I also don’t think anyone has done this recently.
Pete’s done. He should have never taken the forever problem-riddled Raiders job.
Pete finally found himself in way over his head trying to fix a perennial NFL unstable bottom feeder franchise that only stands out for having a great helmet logo nowadays.
Pete went 16-2 vs ND and UCLA. That’s how I’ll always think of him.
Great coach but too old
You have to believe that Longstreet will leave, He had little opportunity to get on the field, even in those few games when SC was dominating. Maiava is sure to start next year. LR blew it by not allowing Longstreet to get some real game experience. Another example of LR’s inability to lead a large, complex program.
I can’t believe local QB Longstreet would leave now, and I don’t believe he will for 2026.
Should he fail to re-sign, Lincoln Riley’s position going forward would be severely weakened.
Maiava is just an average college QB from what I have seen. Longstreet’s not gonna leave just because he didn’t get to mop up with a heavily reduced roster in USC’s disappointing Alamo Bowl. JMHO.
I don’t think Maiava is a lock to start next year. Not after his poor performance in the Alamo. He may start the first game or so. Longstreet should know and be told he will have an equal chance to start.
Don’t forget Longstreet is a much better runner than Maiava. If they have any kind of competition Longstreet could win it. But then you have a freshman coming in, Jonas, who from what I hear is pure magic. Its going to be fun to watch.
He should stay. True he doesn’t have much of a chance of beating out Maiava at the start of the season. But next year will be a brutal schedule and SC will have a talented but young team. The Big 10 is becoming the strongest conference. Indiana is rising from the ashes….Michigan now has Whittingham. You have Ohio State, Oregon, Iowa, Washington, Illinois, Penn State. And a lot of those other schools are spending more money just to compete. Minnesota has everybody coming back next year. So far, SC is the only Big 10 team that has lost post season and they… Read more »
Thanks for mentioning Illinois!……LOL…..
Illinois had a good team. They were 8-4 in the toughest league in college football. They’ll be good next year too. Fortunately, we don’t play them.
Lincoln Riley is insufferable chasing WRs but has yet to resign Longstreet. Doesn’t he understand this 2026 season is the make or brake one for his future here? The #1 need in his program is upgrading the defense in hiring the right DC and fixing the defensive front 7 to finally play decent Big Ten & playoff level football. Everything else is secondary! There comes a time in every job where your boss says you have been given all you are going to get and it is now totally up to you to make this work. He has to show… Read more »
Longstreet said that after the Alamo bowl they would make a decision. Seems that should be coming up soon. Lets all hope he re-signs, with all the QBs in the portal he would get picked up by someone small or else sit on the bench. He can sit on the bench at USC and get a shot next year hopefully. Him becoming the starting QB is only one play away, he has to remember that.
Terrell Anderson is the latest USC commit: Trojans land former NC State receiver from transfer portal Connor Morrissette (USCFootball.com) — USC football added a major difference maker from the transfer portal Monday with a commitment from former North Carolina State wideout Terrell Anderson. The 6-foot-2, 204-pound Anderson caught 39 passes on 54 targets for 629 yds and five TDs with the Wolfpack in 2025.
