Watching Alabama, the size, speed and pursuit on defense in a year that was supposed to be rebuilding, has got to be disheartening to everyone else. It reminds me of Pete’s best defenses that would just fly to the ball. They improved at just the right time. You couple that with a big, well coached offensive line that opens running lanes and allows Young to have plenty of time to throw, and it just amazes me that they don’t skip a beat, year after year, no matter how many players and coaches move on. I hope we can create something… Read more »
Well Ucla cancelled their game pissing off the NC St staff. Oregon probably wished that their game had been cancelled. Wazzu/Miami will be a snoozefest (probably). If ASU can’t stop the Wisconsin run game, it will be a long day for the Devs. Utah may hang for a half in Pasadena but Ohio St should pull away in the 2nd half. Overall, not looking good at all for the Pac-12.
I don’t recall seeing a link to this interesting article posted before. If so, apologies in advance.

I think that once a couple of specific NIL deals are announced, the momentum will accelerate even more.
Thanks for the relay VT. Sometimes, I still find it hard to believe USC actually snagged Riley. It was “WILD”, just as this Trojan player said, and “out of left field.” Totally.
“It was completely out of left field,” one former player said. “We were in the mindset that it was going to be Matt Campbell, or a Matt Campbell kind of guy, and to end up 12 hours later with [Riley] as the head coach? It was wild.”
Thank you for publishing the bowl schedule. It’s nice to see it in one place. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! Hoping 2022 is a great year for all of you and also USC sports!
It is really obvious the ncaa didn’t give a lot of forethought to the effects of the portal on teams and the players themselves. I cannot understand why a team can only take 7 from the portal even though they may have lost 12 to it. A change needs to occur quickly that will allow teams to restore the number lost because now there are not enough slots to take in the number in the portal. They don’t need to cover all the available players, some I am sure are just not worth taking. There should also be a window… Read more »
Bobby Haskins, a multiple year starter on the UVA O-Line, has announced he is transferring to USC.
Keep those portal hits coming. In Lincoln Riley we trust!
Bobby Haskins committed today. I would think he would start at either tackle spot.
Great get I think/hope!
LR’s biggest obstacle?
Here are the number of defensive linemen chosen from each of the Power 5 conferences over the past five drafts.
ACC: 42
Big 12: 17
Big Ten: 38
Pac-12: 24
SEC: 47

Hey Michael Pittman (900 yards with 2 games left to play ) can recover onside kicks also (Colts Win ! ).
Christmas present from my daughter to hang in my office. This is pretty cool so I had to share it.

the Utah and BYU fans will love this.
Riley says he’s gonna fill the place. I believe him. Merry Xmas Utah. Thanks for sharing.
Merry Christmas to all the die hard Trojan fans on this site. Fight on.
Merry Christmas TDB family.
Merry Christmas to all from warm and sunny Frisco, TX. I think all of us got our Christmas present early in the hiring of LR and the decision to rebuild SC Football.
Christmas is the season of Hope. For the first time in more than a decade, we Trojans actually have genuine cause for optimism about our football program. Past seasons, our hopes for success were only backed up with BS from our poor leadership—and we would inevitably be disappointed by their lack of effective action. Our hopes would crash and burn.
But now we have hopes that can come true. God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen (and gentlewomen) of Troy.
Merry Christmas Allen, John and all the TDB faithful. May all have a wonderful Christmas weekend.
Merry Christmas from way out in Rialto CA. Santa will land in the rain, right?
If it helps ease your mind…..Norad is tracking Santa’s journey: https://www.noradsanta.org/en/map
Branch committed to USC!!! Third 5 star to commit for 2023. It must be Christmas!!
I love this part.
In less than a month on campus, Riley has recruited five players with five-star ratings, more than Clay Helton landed in his final four recruiting classes — with more potentially on the way
USC football was built on the best of the all-star preps and Shrine Bowl (now national All-America Bowl)-types. That’s the way it’s always been since the days of Howard Jones.
LR is right. The Best in the West (tip of the hat to BIW backbone Don Borst, the first writer to agree to provide content for SuperPrep in 1985), want to come to USC before any others. But they still need other personal reasons to choose that USC logo.
Now, once again the “recruiting whales” have the reasons to say yes to USC.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays
Through some hard years being a Trojan fanatic along with just some plain harsh times all of you, especially Allen and John have been able to bring some cheer, a smile, a laugh, and at times reality to me and I deeply appreciate everyone on here. Thanks, great things are coming!! Please have a blessed Christmas, from our home to yours.
It’s been 17 years since our last NC, I believe Lincoln Riley is about to remedy that.
Buckle Up…It’s going to be an “E” Ticket ride !!!
Merry Christmas everyone.
It is great having the hope of a competitive team again.
Just expect a slow building process with a possible winning season next year.
But Helton left the cupboard close to bare.
If there is a great recruiting class next year Coach Riley can start rebuilding.
Just to be in CFP would be great.
Or how about at least a Pac12 championship.
Ditto. John and Allen this site has been great and even a little comforting at times. I can finally fly my Trojan flag with pride here in Utah.
I think in February, TDB will be celebrating its 4th birthday, correct? Allen and John, TDB is part of my daily routine. So thankful that you guys made the effort to put it together. Fight On!
A very Merry Christmas to all from a soaked San Diego. 2022 will be a great one to be a Trojan. Thanks to John and Allen for TDB! Went to Christmas Eve dinner with the clan last night. Gave a special thanks when I said Grace for Lincoln Riley. Got a chuckle out of the Washington, Oregon and Utah fans in the family.
Very fun! Love your Grace for Lincoln Riley with your family friends! Wish I could have heard it.
Merry Xmas to all! Gratitude’s my attitude today. Bring the food on. ✌
On this fantastic, rainy (love that!) Xmas Eve, and with the holidays in full swing, happy 2022 and best of health to all the TDB members who say what they mean, and mean what they say here.
5-star 2023 WR Zachariah Branch will be committing to LR before long.
Now, all we need is a new RB coach and about three dozen or so new young Trojans to storm the field at the Coliseum the next couple of years to help remind us all what dominant and exciting Trojan football used to look like.
Fight On and Happy Holidays! 🤘✌✌
Same to you Allen & John. Thank you both for this blog. It is a part of our lives that you both created for us Trojan followers.
Merry Christmas to you Allen and all here on this board! We’ve got a lot of great presents to open over the next few years, as we get this motor back up and running!
FIGHT ON! (With egg nog!)
Does anyone know what happened to Reign of Troy and Alicia?
Have no idea, they stopped posting new stories after the San Jose State game. The website is still online. I checked the twitter feed and there are some recent reposts of pictures and stories from USC twitter account. Alicia is releasing podcasts on Apple under the Reign of Troy name.
Merry Christmas and a healthy and Happy New Year to all the TDB’rs and your families. Thanks for all of the thought provoking content and commentary throughout the year. God Bless!
Same to you San Diego, Merry Christmas.
Zachariah Branch, 5 star WR commits at 4pm pacific time on CBS Sports. 100% > USC.
Now that USC has a top caliber head coach, I keep asking myself how long will he last and when will the nfl come calling with outrageous offers to take him away. It seems that is always the case, and I wonder if Riley will be any different. Only coach in recent memory that has not gone to the nfl is the Cat, which I can understand.
Steveg
Isnt it a little early to be worrying about that?
Dont underestimate the CAT, being more politician than Coach, one of the owners will fall prey to his Sirens Song. Just sit tight.
Hilarious alfa. What a show that would be. I just remember how our hearts were broken when we lost our OC to Pheonix. Merry Christmas my friend.
Thanks Steve, same to you and the rest of the crew that hang out at this USC Sports Pub
Special Happy Holidays and thanks to John and Allen for for suffering our nonsense for another Year….Cheers to All !
Steve, first, Merry Christmas. Second, relax. Mike McCarthy, the coach of the Dallas Cowboys, makes $4 Million a year. The highest paid pro coach is Bill Billichek and he makes $12 Million. LR is being paid about $11 Million. He is making the combined salaries of both the Ram’s and Charger’s HCs. Given the failures of both Nick Saban and Urban Meyer at the pro level, why would he leave? My guess is we have LR for the next decade. Caruso and Folt went big time on this hire. SC is competing with the pro teams. In essence, Riley is a… Read more »
Great way to look at it RJJ, I guess if I was making that kind of money I could be happy where I am at. Merry Christmas buddy, enjoy that heat wave as we get rain and snow in CA.
Just got back from a family Christmas. Great time. Weather was 80 degrees. Tomorrow will be 84. More like Irvine weather than North Texas.
Alan and John, what is your take on the move of Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC? More money?
They’ll do okay as long as they can keep great coaches. The Big 12 just was never going to pay them the money the SEC would. They were trapped as the only true blue-blood programs, like USC is in the Pac-12. But since we’ve been so bad lately, we fit right in. When Saban leaves ALA, a lot will change about the SEC IMO. I think that will end the Tide’s stranglehold and could open up things for OU and TEXAS. While TEXAS and OU get to fortify the nation’s most powerful conference by far (“We Just Care More.”), the… Read more »
Wasn’t the ACC involved in that with the Pac12 and Big Ten?
Yes, the ACC, Big 10 and Pac 12 agreed to be a voting block to prevent any changes to the playoffs that did not benefit everyone equally.
Sorry for the misspelling, Allen. I blame Captain Morgan. Or, I subscribe to the Mark Twain school of spelling: you can never trust a person who can only spell a word one way. I appreciate your and John’s insight. And find TDB a very insightful and delightful fount of football knowledge. Merry Christmas to you, John, and all those who make this site such a treasure for USC alums and football fanatics. Looking forward to the New Year and Lincoln Riley’s first year driving the Ferrari.
Frost just got a reprieve. One more year. Supposedly the program is moving in the right direction. If it is, it’s at the speed of a sea urchin. Frost fired four assistants. Agree. Bad move for Nebraska to join the Big Ten. No natural rivalry as in the days of old when Osborne’s teams played Texas and Oklahoma yearly.
Plus, Frost just lost DL coach/good recruiter/Tony Tuioti to ORE and Dan Lanning, and I don’t think that was a welcome departure at all. And Frost has perfected the art form of losing close games at NEB. I think he might just not make it. The Huskers have been in Football Hell for a long, long time. Not only has Frost been abysmal, but the Huskers haven’t had a 10-win season since 2012 when Bo Pelinio was coach. I think we USC fans were looking down the barrel of a semi-NEB-like future until The Cat suddenly got canned and LR… Read more »
With Texas….it’s always about the money !!
With the Okies….it’s always about following Texas !!
Alfa is on it today!
I’m wearing an eyepatch, drinking Captain Morgan, and watching the Gasparilla Bowl along with the parrot perched on my shoulder. Can’t wait for USC to get back in a meaningful bowl game so I can get out of the hammock.
Does Captain Morgan make anything other than spiced rum?
Yo, ho, ho, matey: nay. My advice
be t’ try th’ Private Stock. It be delicious.
You should be primed perfectly for the Liberty Bowl next Tuesday with Mississippi State. Merry Christmas
I did a little research on the Private Stock and I like that the rum is aged in ‘old school’ casks that contain years of spice and molasses flavors. I am going to follow the suggestion and try straight up with ice and maybe a splash of lime. Thanks for the tip. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
I heard Captain Morgan also makes a mean 20-yr tawny port, supposedly with caramel, cacao powder, dried cherry, and nuts, as well as a touch of old leather boot, of course, and an added dash of special CM spice!
I’ll be keepin an eye out fer that one fer sure.
I’m told It’s Captain Morgan’s personal favorite, which he loves during the Xmas holidays, especially while reading an old, ragged issue of Zap Comix, featuring the Hog Ridin’ Fools!
Classic!
I hear he follows the inspirational adventures of Captain Pissgums and the perverted pirates. Zap Comix! Geez that brings back memories. Screaming Yellow Zonkers anyone? How about a visit to the Oar House in Santa Monica?
USC can sign a maximum of 25 recruits each year for fall enrollment. If they signed grey shirts the previous year then that number will be less. They can also sign up to 7 players from the portal as long as that number does not exceed the number of players from their own team who transferred out using the portal. Any additional players that are signed become grey shirts. Grey shirts cannot practice or play until the end of the football system (spring semester). They must pay their own tuition if they take classes during the fall semester. The big… Read more »
So if 10 leave by the portal, a team can only sign 7? How many openings does SC have?
That is correct. I am trying to find out how many grey shirts we have from last year, if any and then it is a matter of watching the portal transfers.
John I don’t think they had any grey shirts and the number that has left for the portal does exceed 7 already. I doubt Helton even knew about grey shirting.
Probably understood it literally.

Most USC fans think the Trojans will win nine (36.49%), maybe even 10 (24.32%) regular-season games per a current USCFootball.com poll. So much for patience, it seems. While many espouse a reasonable time frame for Lincoln Riley’s success at USC, most appear unable to curb their expectations and believe a basically entirely new Trojan team will turn it around in a real hurry. Optimism is already incredibly high for a quick start out of the gate by Riley. That may not sound like some revelation of any sort, but I was still surprised most people are already pegging USC for… Read more »
Bingo! 50% optimism and 50% PAC 12 schedule, makes for a 9 or 10 win expectation
Every day LR could be closing in on yet another one of those 35-plus new Trojans he suggested might be coming to right the ship. That’s a lot of new talent. From now through June, maybe even longer, it’s gonna be fantastic to see how LR rebuilds the Trojans, especially since USC is back in the realm of the 4/5-star prep All-America types. And the Portal has taken on a new meaning for me. After the many dark years of Helton, and many of his feeble assistants, It’s frankly weird to follow a USC team that I figure is doing… Read more »
Optimism reigns supreme at USC. I can see 9 wins just with the culture change. With players playing like they are serious and having top caliber coaching anything is possible. Let’s see how people think in the fall, I bet the numbers go up.
I am all in on Lincoln Riley(brilliant move by Bohn) but unless they really strike gold in the portal, I don’t see us as any better than 6-7 wins next year.
By 2023, the sky is the limit. Just don’t se it next year. Too many bad players and bad culture to overcome so quickly.
Acapulco Gold has been changed to Portal Gold. I’m buyin’!
According to 247/USCfootball.com USC has 7 commits and 1 transfer, Barquett. The keys on wins next year: How quickly, through the portal, they can get guys out and then get new guys in? How many will be through portal and how many through commits to get to 35 new guys? Then how long will it take to get everybody up to speed with the new systems? Depending on the number of new guys, 35 the magic number, I would expect a slow start to 2022 season. By November, we should see the team coming together. Unlike Helton speak, we really… Read more »
I’ll go ahead and predict nine wins, one more than I predicted for 2021.
In view of my extreme inaccuracy predicting USC football lately, I can only hope LR continues to show his excellence and versatility in redesigning the USC football program.
I agree that it’ll be refreshing to see a USC team that actually improves, and wins big games. I really miss those big game wins.
Guys! Please be realistic. Granted I have no idea who the new 35 kids are going to be or even if LR will be able to bring in that number. PC (a great coach) inherited a program in better shape than the one LR is taking over and he went 6-7 his first year. Allen has quoted a great coach (cannot recall who) who stated that it takes 18 months to turn a culture around. The 2021 SC team was, by nearly unanimous acclaim, the worst in SC history. We all know the culture was a disaster and the talent… Read more »
The final consideration for me was USC’s schedule. That’s pretty darn weak if you ask me. Nine wins against these people is doable.
And if not, fine. It’ll take as long as it takes is my happy mentality about the entire change of the USC Football program’s direction. Call it a XMAS buzz.
I understand where you are coming from, but are you thinking that the 35 are all starters? I think we have some talent on the team now, and it will be directed in a winning manner. These guys left on the team are pumped for sure, do not discredit them, I give them a good shot at 9 wins. Hey, we might even end up with a genuine kick returner. Who knows!!
TrojanRJJ, I remember the quote but also don’t remember who said it. I wonder when he said it. I think now in this era of the portal and NIL that time line could be shortened in the hands of someone skilled in the new art. The Pac 12 is so weak and Oregon and Washington are unkowns at this point. Right now we can say SC has the best head coach in the conference. I’m looking at the number of new faces by summer. The closer to 35 the better.
From what John told us on here the most he can do is 32, unless they grey shirts some guys.
I just watched the three min highlight tape of Trojan signee/LB Garrison Madden from Dutchtown, GA. Highlight tapes should look great, right? They usually do, and don’t always tell the true story on a prospect. But this is OBVIOUSLY not a 3-star player, regardless of how many excellent preps they have in Georgia. Madden has fantastic speed, which is how he runs a 10.71 100. But he’s a lot more than that. He also sheds blockers well, loves to mix it up, has superior quickness and instincts, at 6-2, will play at 225 probably (or more), jumps routes, blows through… Read more »
Georgia has some really good high school footballers.
Do you feel Madden’s honestly only a 3-star guy based on his tape (my only eval point)? Or would you give him a 4?
At SuperPrep, the Dutchtown Flash would have most definitely been an All-America player, basically meaning he’d be in the 4 or 5 range, regardless of what state he came from.
It’s great to see USC now recruiting LBs with DB speed.
Don’t say LR isn’t going after speed. https://www.on3.com/college/usc-trojans/news/new-usc-coach-lincoln-riley-offers-5-star-junior-nyckoles-harbor/
After reading this the obvious question is why wouldn’t Helton have offered him earlier. Sounds like a great person in addition to a great player.
The Cat sux. That’s why he didn’t offer this kid.
Watching all these coaches move around to other rebuilding staffs, and the huge domino impact, has me glued daily to footballscoop.com. The latest:
Oregon: Colorado DBs coach Demetrice Martin (USC GA ’06-07) is expected to join Dan Lanning’s staff in the same capacity Bruce Feldman has shared.
If I remember right, Martin was considered an elite “Donte” like recruiter when he was at UCLA. Wonder what happened there. Did he leave before Chip got there? Did Mora let him go? My memory just ain’t what it used to be

SR ILB Kana’i Mauga (6-2, 245, Waianae, HI) has declared he will enter the Draft.
Not sure how he will do, but he sure played hard this year. On a pathetic defense, he was a bright spot.
I don’t know if he’s got the quickness, speed, and change of direction that the NFL requires or not. I kind of doubt it based on what I saw. But #26 was definitely a baller for USC who came to play. Good luck Kana’i, winner of the 2021 Rhett Ellison Trojan Way Leadership Award!
During the last two days, rumors have proliferated that OU RB coach/super recruiter DeMarco Murray is being pursued hard by LR to join the staff. I’m just passing this along in case you haven’t come across it before. OU is fighting hard to keep him after he apparently expressed interest in joining the Trojans. For all I know, Murray isn’t even in play anymore. But it’s another example of LR’s fearless approach to recruiting both players and coaches. Murray goes way back with USC. Out of LV Bishop Gorman, Murray was a big-time prep AA RB and he chose OU… Read more »

Ugh. What a horrible way to decide a champion “Your team happens to be lucky, here’s your championship”
It’s like the ncaa, take the easiest way out.
Pro football focus has our line as the #1 graded in the country. How? What?
This is not April 1st, is it?
Looking at all of the bowl matchups, I might root for Utah, but I hope NC State can cream the baby bears. 🐻 If Ucla was playing Ohio State (another team I don’t care for) I’d still root for Ohio State.
Football is going to be different next season with all of the coaching changes. I don’t see LSU improving or ND staying on top of their game. It’s not hard to imagine SC getting better and UCLA going in circles. I’m buying tickets next season. (Cheap seats for sure but I’ll be there)
Little Gutty losses are always a major highlight for me. Anytime, anywhere, it’s great to see the Bruins live down to their massive underachievement rep.
I’m also rooting big-time for the Wolfpack to decimate the Bruins in San Diego. I’m afraid improved DTR and WR Kyle Phillips (so underrated) will get hot and wreck my hopes.
DTR always regresses, I anticipate that he will again.
Ah, remembering the good old days, and quotes, of Clay Helton. It wasn’t that long ago when USC began the 2021 season with a desultory 30-7 win over lowly SJS in the Coliseum. Scattered booing had already become a Trojan fan ritual. The Trojans could only score two offensive TDs against the Spartans that day, another scary sign that weary Trojan supporters were in for more oncoming big-time torture. Yes, another typical disappointing USC opener was in the books. Kedon Slovis, now a PITT Panther, was still actually a Heisman Trophy candidate at the time. USC was even ranked #14… Read more »
Another USC Recruiting Takeaway (Antonio Morales, The Athletic): USC, 9th in the Pac-12, 70th nationally “Prior to Lincoln Riley’s hire, it seemed like five-star corner Domani Jackson was on course to sign with Alabama. Four-star safety Zion Branch looked well on his way to Ohio State, and five-star running back Raleek Brown was a solid commit to Riley at Oklahoma. “After the early signing period, they are all Trojans. USC’s national ranking (currently No. 70) will pop out to some, but this class is still very much in progress. The Trojans are in the mix for four-star wideout C.J. Williams… Read more »

Clay Helton is taking UW cast-offs to fill coaching slots:
FootballScoop.com — Georgia Southern: Rip Rowan will coach the defensive line and Aaron Schwanz the linebackers, Pete Thamel has shared. Both will join defensive coordinator Will Harris from Washington.
It’s what he does best: Hire recently fired coaches and leftover recruits and rave about what he has done.
The Scoop again!
UCLA: “Former Washington assistant Ikaika Malloe is joining UCLA’s staff as outside linebackers coach Bruce Feldman has shared.
SI.com — “The Bruins had lost both defensive line coach Johnny Nansen and outside linebackers coach Jason Kaufusi to Arizona earlier in December, with Nansen moving up to defensive coordinator and bringing Kaufusi along with him.
“Malloe joined the Huskies’ staff in 2016 as the defensive line coach, added the co-defensive coordinator title in 2020 and moved to coach outside linebackers in 2021.”
The addition of Malloe, from Hawaii, keeps the Bruin Polynesian coaching connection alive and well.
The Scoop!
Fresno State: “Former USC special teams coordinator John Baxter is expected to join Jeff Tedford’s staff tomorrow sources tell FootballScoop.
“Adam Rittenberg and others have shared similar notes. Baxter was selected Special Teams Coordinator of the Year by his peers in 2011 and has been a candidate multiple other years since.”
Rinse, and repeat…Rinse, and repeat. This coaching club really takes care of its own.
How sad for Fresno St.
😄
Appropriate. Fresno, home of the homeless.
Everyone seems to love Tedford, yet he picks a has-been like John Baxter to handle his special teams. If LR picked Baxter, everyone would know it’s a joke. Tedford definitely has a Teflon quality to him I’d say.
That move by Tedford makes him look like the Edselford.
We picked our teams through all the bowl games and we are doing horrible. It seems some teams are just having to much fun to play serious football. It is insanity to bet on football bowl games until New Years when things tend to get serious.
I never knew the great, 6-5, 221-pound All-America WR Hal Bedsole (aka Prince Hal), from Reseda, made the cover of Sports Illustrated. Back in 1961-62, he’d race to the nearest sideline with the first down catch before any defender could stop him. Averaged 21 yds a catch.
Those old helmets–look like they wouldn’t help much. Dig that QB single bar facemask!
Kedon Slovis announces he is transferring to PITT! “USC transfer Kedon Slovis had already been linked with Pitt due to his relationship with Pitt women’s soccer player Kate McKay, but another factor — a potentially lucrative factor — has been uncovered by HailToPitt on Twitter. “Slovis signed a name, image and likeness deal with American Eagle back in September, partnering with the clothing brand as a featured student-athlete with a national marketing campaign. And the American Eagle headquarters? Just so happens to be in Pittsburgh’s SouthSide Works complex — just down the street from Pitt’s football facilities on the… Read more »
If Pickett is leaving, which I would think he is, this is a good place for Slovis and I hope he has great success. I think he deserves it.
Pickett declared for the NFL and won’t be playing in the Peach Bowl.
Didn’t another of our QB castoffs in the past head to Pitt? Max Browne? Didn’t have much luck as I recall….
Max Browne was the master of the “concerned look” as I recall.
He had a very tough career and when he finally got his shot at USC, was quickly pushed aside by dynamic Sam Darnold before transferring to PITT, enjoying limited brief success, and eventually hurting his shoulder.
But I’ve really enjoyed Max’s YouTube CFB analysis over the last few years. Very professional and insightful.
Browne recently got engaged to former USC volleyball player and mental health & body image advocate Victoria Garrick.
