Elija Newby, LB, latest commit to USC football
I don’t see how USC could have done any better.
Our two-play opponents are very exciting: WIS and MICH ST. USC is only 4-4 all-time vs MICH ST, and 6-1 vs WIS.
WIS is a special match-up for me as the first huge USC game I ever remember watching was the famous 42-37 win over the Badgers, who furiously tried to come back in the dark, but were held off by Willie Brown, Hal Bedsole and Pete Beathard in the ’63 Rose Bowl.
Even with LSU and ND thrown in to the 2024 schedule, I still think we make the 12 team playoff. We are going to have a better roster than everyone we play in conference apart from Michigan who will be a push. It’s going to be fun. Feels strange to care about Big10 football, but now I do.
Just Announced
USC vs B1G opponents in 2024:
In L.A. — ILL, IOWA, MICH, WIS
Away — MARYD, NW, PSU, PUR, UCLA
USC vs B1G opponents in 2025:
In L.A. — IU, MICH ST, NEB, PSU, UCLA
Away — MINN, OHIO ST, RUT, WIS
USC will play each B1G team in either 2024 or 2025.
Wow, very favorable, loving these matchups and looking forward to establishing new rivalries. No sense staring in the rear view mirror when there’s a wide open road of adventure and opportunity in front of us.
This is the type of schedule that will much more easily qualify us for the playoffs rather than have to be concerned with how the rest of the nation perceives the strength of the P12 teams.
I think your point about establishing new rivalries is especially intriguing. I hadn’t really considered that USC might form a new significant rivalry with a school like NW, MICH ST or PUR.
Adventure and opportunity, indeed!
When you look at the all time record of USC against each of the P12 teams, for the most part, USC overwhelmingly has dominated each series. It raises the age old question of if one team rarely wins a rivalry game, is it really a rivalry?
I’m gonna miss UTAH. The Utes really became a big-time rival, especially in SLC. I think we’re gonna hammer them in the Coliseum this year.
Where are the cupcakes?
Tough team after tough team is going to wear out.
Who needs cupcakes? I’d much rather play the better teams than relative creampuffs RUT, MARYD, IU and ILL, etc.
This move should be about better competition as well as much more money.
Cupcakes? This is the new B1G, not the SEC. 😉
It’ll be highly anticipated to see just how these opponents are placed, where byes are, etc. The devil’s always in the details. I love the fact that USC comes out of the gate strong in 2024 with home games vs ILL, IOWA, MICH and WIS. I predict big increases in Coliseum attendance. Fantastic! This B1G balanced scheduling approach is vastly superior to the SEC, where there are still only eight intra-conference games. I see the SEC starting to look like it’s on its heels a little, if that’s possible. The B1G just made the SEC look like chumps with this… Read more »
Me too, and I hope that we keep those opponent fanbases from overrunning us. I have to admit their fanbases travel well.
They love L.A. for football weekenders, which is one of the reasons the B1G wanted USC and UCLA in the first place. Plus, the L.A. population contains very large numbers of Midwest transplants who are fans of these B1G teams, soon to be seen in the Coliseum. Today was a very exciting day for USC and the B1G. Let the new rivalries begin. And who doesn’t like playing MICH, OHIO ST, PSU and WIS whenever possible? I expect NEB will make a return to relevancy under Matt Rhule. Would love to go to Lincoln to see USC play the Huskers… Read more »
Reminder — 2024 USC schedule announcement in 10 mins on B1G Network. Most signs point to a very nice set-up as John pointed out, especially amongst stronger programs.
2024 USC Big Ten football opponents leaked hours before official reveal Matt Zemek (Trojans Wire) — The Big Ten football schedule reveal, scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, has been preceded by some schedule leaks. Can’t wait to see Lincoln Riley coach against Clay “The Cat” Helton in 2025 at the Coliseum.
At first, I felt a little unsettled that Helton could worm his way back into an actual appearance at the Coliseum so quickly.
Now I view it as an unexpected chance to watch Helton melt under the pressure of an extremely talented and well-coached USC team. Should be fun.
After he gets his well deserved spanking, it’ll probably not occur to him when looking over at the winning sideline that “all this could have been yours”.
“A man’s got to know his limitations” — Clint Eastwood I think The Cat truly did the best he could. He was just absolutely too limited to ever succeed at USC. Pat Haden and Lynn Swann literally semi-ruined their outstanding legacies at USC by putting The Cat in a spot he would never be ready for. It’s arguably their fault as much as his. Blind faith doesn’t work in football. It’s such a relief to not have to watch post-game Clay going on and on about his “warriors” and his need to watch hours of tape to answer anything about… Read more »

Four-Star Mater Dei QB Elijah Brown raves about weekend visit to STAN, and is closing in on a decision. USC doesn’t really have a big need for a 2024 QB so if he goes to Stanford, good for him. I hope he does well. They need all the help they can get.
I’m glad USC isn’t taking Elijah Brown. Enough QB competition already on our roster. We could literally skip a 2024 QB and probably be okay, though I expect LR will sign someone. The fun question is which direction will USC head?
Seems like he’s a perfect fit for STAN, a program headed downhill like a speeding bullet.
USC’s Austin Overn Named to Freshman All-America Team LOS ANGELES – Collegiate Baseball Newspaper released its list of 2023 Freshmen All-Americans today (June 7) and USC baseball’s Austin Overn earned the recognition after a phenomenal rookie campaign. Overn is one of three Pac-12 players to earn Freshman All-American status and is the first Trojan since Ethan Hoopingarner in the shortened 2020 season to be named to the freshman list. The last USC player to earn Freshman All-American honors in a full season was Ricky Oropesa in 2009. The Joshua Jackson news isn’t good.
I’m thinking MarShawn Lloyd (below) beats out Austin Jones, who is more of a plugger, for sure. This WR group, (fabulous frosh Zachariah Branch anyone?) also has some other targets who are interchangeable. 15 projected starters are transfers. What a Trojan makeover.
Great looking overall roster IMO.
I’ll bet we see Domani grab a starting CB spot.
Much better roster than last year. Front 7 on D return only one from last year. On O, I like Lloyd, Branch and Duce Robinson, particularly Duce. I think the D is deceptive because the 2 deep will all play a lot given this O. I think this is one of the best Os SC has ever fielded. I think the D will be improved (hard not to be better than the D from Utah on – one of the worst SC D I have ever seen). Hopefully, giving Grinch a mentor will work miracles!
You know you have big reasons for optimism when you really like USC’s roster without even bringing up 5-star nugget Duce Robinson from Arizona. And with these new high-grade commits suddenly steaming in at breakneck speed with more to come, it’s hard not to get caught up in the amazing direction of Trojan football. Lincoln Riley spawns an awful lot of confidence, even though he knows he literally has to prove to the entire CFB world that he can field an elite team that is strong on defense and also capable of making special teams an asset — without a… Read more »
Tony Petitti: B1G “days away” from revealing decision on divisions, format
The Big Ten plans to remain a nine-game conference schedule.
“So there are certain things that I think are important that 100 percent the conference reinforces it. You don’t wanna go too long where schools continue to miss each other in terms of how often they play,” revealed Petitti.
Protecting rivalries is one of Petitti’s chief issues to address, he said, because keeping traditions are important to him and the conference.

Move To the Big-10 Is a Huge Plus Scott Schrader (WeAreSC) — There hasn’t been one USC recruit I’ve spoken to who isn’t excited about the move to the Big-10 Conference in 2024. Top 100 Bosco CB Marcelles Williams (younger brother of Trojan CB Max Williams) is among them. He visits USC on June 16. “Yes, it would be very big,” said Williams about the opportunity to play Ohio St., Michigan, Penn St., Michigan St, and others in the Big Ten. One reality USC and UCLA began to face in recent years was high school coaches advising their elite… Read more »
I mused recently thy USC is leaving the Coast Guard to see the country. I said this because a recent recruit’s parents held him back from committing to Oregon. What is left of the PAC 10 after 2024 will most likely be a Coast Guard instead of a regular Navy. I also said the kid will get to see cornfields and potatoes as well as buckeyes. (I looked up buckeyes. They’re poisonous most Ohio farmers destroy the plants to avoid livestock poisoning. The Native Americans used to grind the nut into powder and used it to stun fish.)
This battle between the Pac-12 and the Big 12 over the carcass of the Pac-12 is an amazing thing to watch unfold. I’m particularly interested to see what SDS will do.
Like most, I’m thinking ultimately that the Pac-12 stands pat, adds SDS and SMU in the short run, and tries to make the best of it without the only true great CFB program in the entire west — USC.
I never thought about recruiting impact. The Pac will have at least four really good teams this year (SC, WA, UT and Oregon) and maybe as many as six (adding in UCLA and Oregon State). Conference is going to be tough as any in the nation. But, if the talent leaves with SC and UCLA, can UW and Oregon and Utah keep the conference afloat? Oregon is clearly going to be extremely well funded and will have a pay for play NIL program that will compete with most elites in the nation (I doubt any school has the resources Texas… Read more »
As I posted on my Facebook account, it’s getting to the dull hot days of Summer where baseball is about the only thing on TV to watch. I think the odds got it right. About 75-25, the Pac holds together this year. It is possible that the Pac will have four teams in the top 15 this year.
USC has a totally legit shot at the NC this year. Hope we don’t waste Caleb’s last year with us. He’s so spectacular. Wonder what he’s making $-wise this year?
Now’s our shot, suddenly here after all the wasted years under The Cat.
USC and Georgia Southern are playing in L.A. on Sept. 6, 2025. It’s a surprise one-offer between the old and the new, and the first game ever between the two schools.
The Eagles also play at FRESNO ST the week earlier on Aug. 30.
Will Clay Helton still be the HC of GSU?
Yes. He’s perfect at a place like that.
I still can’t believe The Cat landed a college HCing position so quickly, though he surely earned his nickname overcoming what I called numerous disasters. That FF&F approach has worked magic for him too.
Will Lincoln Riley still be the coach at USC ?
I predict LR will be at USC at least through the 2026 season. He’s only 39.
The NFL will eventually reel him in I believe. Who wouldn’t get sick of keeping up with relentless CFB prep recruiting/portal/NIL issues, and who knows what else will come up?
Maybe players will officially be employees before long. Even Nick Saban is having trouble losing 1/3 of his roster every year to graduation, NFL, the portal, etc.
I’m still shocked that Kyle Ford will be playing for UCLA in 2023.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1594179390598176768
Don’t talk about that! Like talking up a no hitter in the dugout! 😉
Thanks for posting Allen! Although The Cat was a disaster as USC’s HC, I’ve always thought he was a decent guy in the wrong place. Seems like Georgia Southern is more his speed. I seem to recall the Eagles had a decent season last year and ended up in a bowl game. I know Clay’s brother is a highly respected OC but, off the top of my head, can’t remember where. In 2025 I would expect Malachi Nelson to be SC’s starting QB after he starts in the 2024 season.
GSU went 6-6, losing to Buffalo 23-21 in the Camellia Bowl. An improvement from 3-9 in 2021. Mr. Mediocre continues on. Tyson Helton is now HC at Western Kentucky, was SC’s QB coach ’16-’17 and Tennessee OC in 2018. Tyson went 9-5 last 2 seasons.
Thanks for filling in the blanks for me. Mr. Mediocre is just what SC got. I wasn’t impressed with Harrell either.
Trooper on his right looks like he could be a brother.
Hilarious! You are so right. Great observation. ✌
USC has set the recruiting world on fire over 48 hours in a way I don’t remember ever seeing any school do before, at least not in such a compressed time. Talk about momentum.
I guess another commit announcement is expected soon. Who is your best guess of who it is?
LR brought in a mentor for Grinch. It seems to be paying off. Grinch added to young quality DL this offseason. He now needs to add a couple more frosh DL. I might not care for Donte as a coach, but he sure can recruit!
Cowherd’s Mantra
Colin Cowherd says this all the time on his show, and he just said it again, so in case you Cowherd listeners have forgotten.
“Let me tell you something. The best thing that could happen to college football, is the Texas Longhorns, and USC get great. Those are glamour programs. Bama’s great, but they’re not a glamour program.”
So who are the other real glamour programs?
I would have to include Notre Dame and Miami. When they were both good at the same time, 1988, Catholics v Convicts, an historic game.
The USC v ND game that year was #1 v #2, won by ND.
Those were the first two schools that came to my mind, and in that order.
Catholics vs Convicts was definitely one of the greatest rivalries in CFB for a few years. The ESPN deal on that is amazing as you know.
Would you include any other schools in the glamour category? USC, TEXAS, ND, MIA and…
I would add MICH, OHIO ST, LSU, and…
I would give those 3 the title of Blue Collar rather than Glamour.
So you’d only have four “Glam” schools, huh?
Who else has star power? Lots of solid successful programs but do they have “an exciting and often illusory and romantic attractiveness”?
So you’re sticking with only four “Glam” schools. That’s way too limiting for me. IMO, OHIO ST vs MICH is arguably the greatest rivalry in the college game. It’s a game I never miss and having been to both MICH and OHIO ST to see amazing games, they definitely make the glamour program list for me personally, for many reasons, and are definitely not just solid successful programs. LSU is another pure star power program as I see them. It’s the single most impressive place to be to see an away game outside of South Bend for this USC fan.… Read more »
Here’s an insightful look at the teams with the most 4 and 5-star talent on their rosters (four consecutive recruiting cycles).
USC comes in at No. 15. Lincoln Riley won 11 games last season with a fantastic QB but a lot less talent than some other notable CFB powers.
USC’s placement among these heavyweights figures to climb the ranks quickly with Clay Helton gone.
247sports.com
One cannot overestimate the importance of a QB. SC is significantly behind the other elite programs in talent level. As you note in your above post, LR is moving rapidly to close that gap.
Notice Utah is not in this group. No team in the nation does a better job of identifying talent and developing it than the Utes. Willingham is probably the most underrated and underpaid coach in the nation. On the flip side, no P5 team did a worse job of identifying talent and developing it than the Clay Helton Trojans.
Kyle Whittingham is perfect for UTAH.
He’s such a great “fit” for that place. Many thought he would be boffo if ever hired at USC too. But those kinds of moves don’t always work out. USC, despite all its advantages, is a really hard place to be good at for so many reasons.
Makes me think of Lincoln Riley. I never dreamed he would head to SC from OU in a million years.
Riley is kicking butt and taking names lately. His successful transition to USC has been just an unbelievable thing to see.
Stewart Mandel and Bruce Feldman (The Athletic) rank the college QBs. Here are just a few whom I figure you might find interesting. Note where Jaxson Dart and Kedon Slovis are: Tier 1 Caleb Williams, USC Stew: I know Caleb and Drake Maye are being grouped together in the early 2024 NFL Draft talk, but Williams is in a tier to himself. He produced nearly 5,000 yards of offense, 42 touchdowns and just five interceptions last year. Still the biggest story in collegiate sports. No one has a clue what will happen. But, if I am CO, I would move – the B12 has a solid conference and a clear vision as to what it is seeking to do. The Pac is like a large ship that is taking on a lot of water – all it can do is concentrate on getting rid of that water. Wolf is unquestionably the worst beat writer in all of America. The day SC got a BB commitment from Brandon Gardener, Wolf said that Rick Pitino( the new coach at St. Johns where Gardener had committed to the previous coach) didn’t want him, and that is the only reason he signed with Enfield. Funny, because St, John’s class is outside the top 100, and yet they don’t want the services of a 4 star, top 100 player, who was also coveted by Kansas and Alabama, among others. I won’t go there just for that reason. No need to give the guy any extra clicks, he openly roots and “writes” against USC. Why would anyone who cares about the university have anything to do with his nonsense?
Scott Wolf’s blog has gotten raunchy lately with imposters taking up more space than true posters. The typical response runs the gambit from political stupidity to downright filth worthy of Hustler magazine. There is no regulation whatsoever unless you complain about the comments to Scott himself, they you are blocked while the filth rolls on.
Yesterday Scott mentioned that the USC Athletics Hall of Fame hadn’t had an inductee since 2018. This fact was interesting, so I looked it up. https://usctrojans.com/sports/2018/5/21/usc-athletics-hall-of-fame.aspx

Steveg, totally agree. I am convinced that the now clearly unfair (and I think illegal) treatment of SC over the Reggie Bush affair was orchestrated by the SEC. Klatt really knows College football, but still harbors anti- USC sentiments.
When Tuli and Blackmon got drafted, he was doping NFL commentary, and was supposed to discuss if this was a good pick, did the player fit the system, etc. His first comments are both were that he came from a team with a bad defense. True perhaps, but totally uncalled for. I think he hates Bohn for firing his coach when he was playing for Colorado, and just can’t let it go.
