Caleb Williams still coming to grips with being a Heisman Trophy winner
Ryan Kartje (LA Times)ย —ย From the moment he lifted the iconic trophy last Saturday night, Caleb Williamsย hasnโt had much time to let the reality ofย his Heisman winย sink in, let alone get the sleep he so desperately needs.
USCโs star quarterback โ andย the schoolโs record eighth Heisman winnerย โ has been running on fumes from that nightโs adrenaline rush. And there was no respite once he returned from New York. Not even winning the most coveted award in all of college sports could get Williams out of finals, for which he spent all of Monday through Wednesday this week cramming.
โTo be in that moment, no matter how much sleep I had,โ Williams said, โI was really grateful.โ
The experience was made all the more memorable, he said, by the presence of his USC offensive linemen, eight of whom heโd arranged to accompany him to the ceremony in New York. After the presentation, the group gathered to celebrate in a penthouse suite gifted by the Heisman Trust.
โWe just sat back and laughed and spent some good quality time together,โ Williams said. โWe were all just enjoying the moment. Mainly because of whereย USCย has come from these past couple years. Itโs been pretty tough, and most of those O-linemen have been through that. Being able to enjoy the moment with them โฆ it meant a lot to have them there.โ
Williams might not have much longer to play with most of his starting line. Centerย Brett Neilon, who suffered an injury in the Pac-12 title game, has played his last down at USC. Offensive tackleย Bobby Haskinsย and guardย Andrew Vorhees have exhausted their eligibility, and guard Justin Dedich could opt to move on after five seasons at USC.
USC coach Lincoln Rileyย said he was uncertain about Williamsโ status for theย Cotton Bowlย after he suffered a โsignificantโ hamstring injury in the Pac-12 title game against Utah. But the quarterback reiterated Thursday that he planned to play against Tulane on Jan. 2.
โHamstring is doing well,โ he said, โand I am confident that Iโll be out there.โ
His hamstring has held up through one busy weekend already. After the late-night celebration in his suite, Williams was whisked off to โGood Morning Americaโ for a 7 a.m. interview. Then, there was โSportsCenter.โ And an NFL pregame show. And that night, the Heisman gala, where he was officially welcomed to the awardโs fraternity as its 88th member.
By the time he made it to his flight, he was more than ready for four precious hours of sleep.
But with the whirlwind of the last week now behind him, Williams was already thinking about a return trip, when he spoke to reporters in Los Angeles on Thursday.
โNext year, Iโm gonna work harder,โ Williams said. โIโm gonna do more, mentally and physically when Iโm out there. And Iโll be back in New York and hopefully win a national championship next year.โ
He still has to find a permanent place for the first trophy. Right now, itโs just sitting in the dining area of his campus apartment.
โItโs probably the coolest centerpiece you can have,โ Williams said with a smile.

5-star QB Dante Moore (Detroit King) has flipped from ORE to UCLA, by far the biggest prep catch, at least ranking’s-wise, of Chip Kelly’s crew, ever. Moore will be the first top-100 national prospect to sign with UCLA since OG Sean Rhyan (No. 74) in the ’19 class. He will be the little gutties’ first five-star since LB Jaelan Phillips (No. 1 overall in ’17). UCLA is going to be tough again next year. Let’s see if the Bruins decide to show up for the worst bowl ever – the El Paso TX Bowl.

BREAKING: Big-Time Arizona WR Transfer Dorian Singer Commits to USC
USC has to have the deepest WR room in the nation: Dorian Singer (probably our best WR), Mario Williams, CJ Williams, Kyle Ford, Taj Washington, Brendan Rice, Kyron Hudson, Michael Jackson & Gary Bryant, Jr. We are adding the top two HS WR in the nation: Branch and Lemon. That is a total of 11. We have to see transfers.
As an observation, AZ will not be as formidable in 2023 as I thought. We got their best DL, their best WR, and their best CB.
Has anyone contributed to Arena? https://www.arenanil.io/?c=pac12
Per On3, Scott Schrader, DL Matayo Uiagalelei now a 51% shot at becoming a Trojan over tOHS and OR.
Letโs go get him LR.
USC added some secondary help with a commitment from veteran mainstay ARIZ transfer CB Christian Roland-Wallace (6-0, 205) on Sunday. Wallace is the second ARIZ pickup for USC’s defense, joining DL Kyon Barrs. Roland-Wallace has been a four-year starter for the Wildcats, and one of their best defenders, with 29 starts over the last three seasons, including 12 games in 2022 and 2021. This past season the JR had a career-high 58 total tackles with six pass breakups. Career-wise, Roland-Wallace already has 169 total tackles, 3.5 TFL and two picks, and started eight of 12 games as a true frosh. Like Barrs,… Read more ยป

Josiah Stewart to Mich and Khyree Jackson to Oregon. A couple of swings and misses for defensive transfers. Iโm really hoping we get Braden Fiske.

There again you have to think about how much $$$ was involved and how USC just isn’t in the game nor does it appear they want to be in the least.
In case you didn’t know:
USC’s 7-victory increase from 2021 matches the biggest one-season turnaround in USC history. The other 7-game flip was in 1962 when the National Champion Trojans won 11 games after only 4 victories in 1961.
Great World Cup final, so entertaining. Iโm not a soccer guy but it was great. With all that, deciding a game on penalty kicks is stupid.
Not if you have played the game. After that much regulation time and extra time there is literally nothing left in the tank. You only have a couple substitutions so that is not an option either.
The Recruiting Race Between ORE and USC Antonio Morales (The Athletic) — The Ducks and Trojans have been at the top of the Pac-12 recruiting rankings for most of this cycle. “It’s more of the same,” Rivals national recruiting director Adam Gorney said. “The really good teams continue to recruit really well.” Oregon’s class currently sits atop the league. It’s 12th nationally, but obviously that hinges on keeping 5-star QB Dante Moore (Detroit King). It’s also a national class. The Ducks have a commitment from five-star receiver Jurrion Dickey, a California native. Four-star running back commit Dante Dowdell is from… Read more ยป
What a change in perspective.
If Clay Helton brought in a 3-star prospect, I figured he was a 3-star prospect.
When Lincoln Riley brings in a 3-star prospect, I figure he could end up as a 4 or 5-star guy.
Can’t help it because I trust LR’s evaluation and recruiting power so much more than The Cat’s.
Does anyone else have this LR big halo vantage?
LR has shown his ability to see promise in players as several have gone from 3 to 4 stars.
Yes. I trust his player evaluations.
Allen, LR has earned that halo. We will see how it turns out. I am interested in roster management. We have 85 spots. I wonder how we are doing on numbers. I did a short analysis of WRs. I think SC would be well served bringing in Dorian Singer from AZ. But, do we have the roster space? I counted him being our 11th WR.
Here’s Singer, your man:
I think everyone does to a degree Allen. But I think you have it the worst.
Wednesday should be very interesting. Remember under Helton, how it was actually painful to follow USC’s recruiting sometimes? LOI Days (both of them each year) lost a lot of luster for many of us.
I’m enjoying watching how LR is navigating his way to the 2023 roster. Lots of decisions by many people still remain to be made.
I am looking forward to it too. Hated it under Helton.
Scott Schrader (on3.com) — Although it didn’t appear this would be the outcome last month when communication dropped off with the USC coaching staff, 3-Star Arlington (VA) DL/DE/3-tech (primary need area) Elijah Hughes (6-3, 265) announced his commitment to USC. When Hughes took his USC visit on Sept 30, we’re told the USC staff felt they did all they could to make a winning presentation to Hughes and his family. Hughes chose USC over VT and STAN. Reggie Bush lets outgoing NCAA prez Mark Emmert know how he feels!
Reggie Bush @ReggieBush
“NCAA paid $8 million quietly behind closed doors trying to clean up their mistakes. I understand why you signed that nondisclosure agreement Mark Emmert but I would like you to know your secret is not safe. After all these years they are still scared of #5.”
Boy you can help but feel there is a lot more to this story than the public knows. Maybe with Emmert gone the NCAA can start to make amends and right some wrongs.

I like the credit the website gives Caleb but they obviously spend more time on the NFL then College football because you’ll notice they refer to USC as “The Spartans ” .
That’s unbelievable, and “Spartans” was used twice. Such a massive mistake, it’s almost silly, especially since so much attention to detail was expressed in the remainder of the article, which was pretty informative. The author, Ely Allen, is catching just a little flack. Maybe we should give him a pass!
Fact checking just does not exist anymore.
“The NCAA issued a one-time, blanket waiver on Friday that exempts bowl games from counting toward the four-game redshirt rule in college football, according to multiple reports. The waiver went into effect on Thursday, and will apply to all FBS bowl games beginning with Friday’s Bahamas Bowl and Cure Bowl.” From CBS Sports.
Glad Shane is coming back:
โItโs everything,โ Shane Lee said. โYou definitely want to finish off on the right note, especially because weโre here to start something. This is the foundation of what weโre trying to build, the foundation of USCโs culture. To finish off means everything. We have to finish…โ

Linebacker Shane Lee says he is returning for another season at #USC
Visits to USC this weekend: I think the biggest name uncommitted is Tony Grimes. Coming after TAMU visit to be here Saturday and Sunday. Josiah Stewart and Trace Ford coming also. Jakoby Lane coming so USC can lock him down and keep him away from AZ.
I read the western Michigan DL is there as well. He would be a really good get. With Barrs we would have two proven big guys to play interior DLine.
Steve, What do think about Singer from AZ? He is visiting. I know we are loaded at WR and getting in two studs. But, Singer is a one and done player like Addison and I think Bynum. He is either coming to SC or UW. Should be interesting. I think LR likes to carry 10 WRs. Right now they have Mario Williams, Brandon Rice, Taj Washington, Kyle Ford, Michael Jackson & Hudson-Ware. We have the two frosh studs plus Gary Barnett staying to make 9. Singer would make 10.
Singer is visiting this weekend I just found out. With how he tore us up it would be great to have him on our side of the ball.

Arizona WR Dorian Singer is now up to 85% confidence projection to USC while Arizona State has dropped to 3% per On3
Gary Bryant? He decided to stay? Did not see that news. I liked what he has to offer. Hope LR can develop him.
Trojan 5,
I sure mangled that name! Yes, Gary Bryant chose to stay, saying he wanted an SC degree. Assuming Singer comes, someone is going to have to transfer. I also forgot about CJ Williams who was hurt this year.
Mel Kiperโs Top 10 DTs
1 Jalen Carter, Georgia
2 Bryan Bresee, Clemson
3 Siaki Ika, Baylor
4 Tuli Tuipulotu, USC
5 Mazi Smith, Michigan
6 Keeanu Benton, Wisconsin
7 JerโZhan Newton, Illinois
8 Keondre Coburn, Wisconsin
9 Calijah Kancey, Pitt
10 Fabien Lovett, Florida State
Two points stand out: (1) Tuli should leave SC this year and (2) he should skip the Cotton Bowl.
Do you think he’ll go as a first-round draft pick? He has a ‘tweener feel to him in the eyes of some. Others might just call that versatility. Will Tuli get drafted ahead of Jordan Addison assuming #3 splits?
Actually, I think both could help themselves with strong Cotton Bowl performances, especially Addison, who missed important time with injury. Combines only show so much. There’s no substitute for playing well in big games.
Since neither has opted out of SC’s bowl game yet, what are they waiting for if they don’t intend to play?
I now think both WILL play. Whether they should or should not is another question. I read quotes from Caleb about putting team first and putting team goals first. I listened to Shane Lee give his reasons for returning – the same reasons – putting team first and team goals above your individual goals. LR has install an incredible team culture. After I heard from both Caleb and Shane Lee, I would be surprised if BOTH did not play. For to decline to play would be to put self ahead of team. That is simply not the ethic of the… Read more ยป
2nd point. WI must have had one heck of a D.
The UC Board of Regents approved UCLAโs move to the Big Ten by a vote of 11-5. However, the Regents also agreed Cal should receive, annually, between $2 to $10 million from UCLA as part of their departure to the Big Ten, contingent on differences between the Big Ten and Pac-12 TV deals. Communists just love other peoples money!
The Regents decided to make Cal an unofficial member of the B10. Perhaps Cal should schedule all its non-conference games with B10 teams!
Great to see Sam having some success!
How about turnovers and tackles for loss? The top stat is the only one that counts.
I loved watching Sam Darnold play QB for SC. He was an erratic gambler who (often under insane pressure) pulled off some miraculous plays that were otherworldly, most notably, the perfect Rose Bowl TD pass guided by radar down the middle to Deontay Burnett.
I think Caleb is better than Sam, but not by much. Sam made some unbelievable plays. I still remember the Texas game in the Coliseum. He made an unbelievable jump pass over an unblocked blitzing linebacker to the true frosh RB who was amazing until he broke his back and then was done. Transferred to Indiana. Cannot remember his name. His second half against Utah in the Coliseum was the best half of QB play I have ever witnessed in person. He was unbelievable.
