USC’s new rivalry assassin: Five things to know about QB Caleb Williams
J Brady McCullough (LA Times) — Here are five things to know about new USC quarterback Caleb Williams, who announced that he would follow head coach Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma to Los Angeles — the surest sign yet that the Trojans’ splashy hire of Riley is going to pay off with substance sooner rather than later.
He’s a rivalry assassin
USC is coming off its most forgettable season in decades, a campaign that featured a 15-point loss at Notre Dame and a humbling 29-point defeat to UCLA at the Coliseum. The Trojans’ last win against the Fighting Irish came in 2016, and Chip Kelly’s Bruins have split four games. The quickest way for Riley to ingratiate himself with his new fan base is to change those trends.
Enter Williams, who jogged onto the Cotton Bowl field Oct. 9 with Oklahoma trailing the hated Texas Longhorns 28-7. The freshman’s first play in the Red River Rivalry? A 66-yard rush for a touchdown that signaled to Steve Sarkisian’s bunch that Williams was going to bring a different element than the struggling Spencer Rattler. Williams’ moxie and presence rallied the Sooners, who needed every one of his 300 total yards to escape Dallas with a 55-48 win.
He’s a D.C.-made superhero
As Sports Illustrated’s profile of Williams explained, his exploits were not surprising to those who coached him and played with him in Washington, where he grew into the nation’s top quarterback recruit in the 2021 class.
Williams attended Gonzaga College High, an elite, all-boys Catholic school, located just a mile from the U.S. Capitol, so it doesn’t seem he will be a fish out of water walled in from L.A. by USC’s prestigious gates. At Gonzaga, Williams naturally picked up the nickname “Superman” because of his flair for the dramatic and game-saving ability.
Sure, Williams was born with special gifts, but he had also been groomed from a young age by his father, Carl, to excel in the biggest moments. Carl is a co-owner of a D.C.-area Athletic Republic, a national chain of training facilities where Williams worked with an experienced crew to hone the craft of quarterbacking.
But Rattler did not look the part of a Heisman favorite in the season’s first month, and some disgruntled OU fans chanted, “We want Caleb!” When the Sooners fell behind to the Longhorns, Riley made the bold move to see what the freshman could do.
The next week, Riley did not name a starter, hoping to keep it quiet. The OU Daily, the student newspaper, watched practice from a nearby parking facility and reported that Williams was taking the first-team snaps, which riled Riley, who was known for limiting media access in Norman. Freshmen were not allowed to speak to media, and Williams was not made available until after Riley had left for USC, after OU’s bowl game.
For all the hype Williams received after the Texas win, the Oklahoma offense still did not fully take off with him under center. The Sooners barely survived a trip to Kansas. They were stymied by Dave Aranda’s Baylor defense in a road loss in Waco, Texas. Williams completed just 20 of 39 passes in a defeat at Oklahoma State that kept the Sooners out of the Big 12 Conference championship game.
Williams still completed 64.5% of his passes for 1,912 yards and 21 touchdowns with only four interceptions. He also rushed for 442 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 5.6 yards per carry.
He will be a face of NIL
On July 3, a few days after the NCAA returned name, image and likeness rights to college athletes, Williams posted on Twitter from his account @CALEBcsw, “I’m Not a Businessman; I’m a Business, Man!” The quote was from a Jay-Z song, and Williams left that tweet pinned to the top of his profile.
With a combined 180,000 followers on Instagram and Twitter, he will remain open for business in Los Angeles’ media market, which had to be a big draw for him in picking USC, along with his trust in Riley to continue his development.
He will be a Heisman Trophy favorite
Williams’ performance against Texas was so startling that within weeks rumblings began that he could win the Heisman despite not starting until halfway through the season. At that point, none of the preseason favorites had made their cases for that kind of recognition, and Williams’ talent was undeniable.
Next year, Bryce Young will be defending his Heisman win, and Ohio State’s CJ Stroud should put up huge numbers once again in Columbus. Young and Stroud are Southern California kids who felt at the time they had to leave L.A. to make their name given the uncertainty at USC under Clay Helton.
It will be up to Williams, an L.A. transplant, to prove to future Southland prospects that is no longer the case.

These are quite simply just bad times for OU, which today lost super 5-star OL Devon Campbell (#9 overall prospect in the country) from Arlington, Tx, to TEXAS. Sorry, Bill Bedenbaugh. Congrats Sark, who now has the #5 prep class in the country.
Pac-12 commish George Kliavkoff on Caleb Williams to USC:
“Axis shift in college football…”
There’s an article on ESPN in which Saban is lamenting how NIL is being used as a recruiting tool. Well, chief, you chose to coach in Tuscaloosa, and seem to be doing pretty well recruiting, so deal with it, you’ll get no sympathy from me. He’s probably hating the transfer portal too, since his roster will be much more fluid, and I expect his roster depth will be somewhat diminished as his 2nd string players who lose out to starters seek starting roles elsewhere. He knows he has a near monopoly on top talent under the old system. If NIL… Read more »
The U.S. Supreme Court doesn’t like the NCAA. Throw in the fact that nobody else does either, especially when it comes to enforcement measures, and they just don’t worry me anymore (unless I were an ASU fan, hah!).
“I would hate to be legal counsel for the NCAA today,” said Darren Heitner, a Florida sports law attorney who helped craft the state’s NIL law that is in effect today.
NCAA…an institution that out-lived its usefulness. It could disband tomorrow and I doubt anyone would notice, certainly for football anyway.
”this NIL deal really stinks. I prefer the good old days when boosters paid my players without any of us knowing…” said with a wink, by Saban.
John Wooden shared that same philosophy, Chris, back in tha day–as the kids say it now.
I have felt that NIL and the Portal will have a parity effect over time. When you see LR transform SC in 2 months it is very powerful. Expanding the playoffs will also break up the dynasties of old. Large city schools can offer so much more NIL opportunities and if the school has a shot at the playoffs and they could be magnets. Think Seattle, Bay Area, San Diego, Houston, Dallas/Ft Worth, Chicago, Miami. Schools in small college towns may be at a disadvantage. Saban better change with the times or he will start to fade.
Saban’s already 70 years old, and has an unmatched seven NCs in his trophy case. He just signed the #2 prep recruiting class in the country, finished #2 in the country after losing to GA, and is predicted to win it all again in 2022. I don’t think “fade” is a part of his vocab. JMHO.
Lincoln Riley presser — 21 mins
Boy, quiet humble confidence, all business, no BS, how refreshing.
I just hope he’s recruiting enough warriors! 😜
Oh, hell no! I don’t want to ever hear that phrase mentioned in connection with USC football again!
I got cut off on the press conference. Did it sound like they were adding anyone today?
Class is “far from done”, but nobody new today from what I gleaned.
Riley — “We have a lot more answers than we have holes right now…You’re constantly looking to upgrade because it can change quickly…We’ll continue to add several on both sides of the ball and at all positions after spring wraps up…”
I suppose I am still suffering from Helton PTSD. Having seen what an elite coach is and how he acts, I am still amazed that SC kept the Cat for six long years. I loved your characterization of that time as “the Helton moratorium of SC Football.” Right now, I wonder how the kids are reacting to what is going on. The conditioning and approach to conditioning must be drastically different than what they faced under the Cat. My guess is the message is loud and clear – the program does not exist for your personality development; it exists to… Read more »
What’s Riley talking about in adding several on both sides of the ball after spring wraps up? What players are going to be available after spring ball other than walk ons? Are portals still available then?
Portal transfers are always available. After spring ball, more players will enter the Portal seeking start-ups at different schools. Remember when frosh DL Jay Toia finished a great spring at USC, then suddenly immed left for UCLA?
Think Michigan if Harbaugh goes nfl. Think second stringers that are good enough to start elsewhere.
As stated by a former USC player:
“Spring Camps will be an evaluation period for players who will then decide what they want to do. They’re a lot of Southern California athletes at other programs who understand what’s happening at USC now. Many who would have chosen USC if the situation at USC now, was happening then. It will be interesting because the BUZZ is back. Just like Alabama when they hired Saban. USC was a sleeping giant. The sleeping giant has awakened and every player knows it. Best to join USC asap because the openings are already filling up.”
Sounds intriguing if this starts to happen with some OL, DL and LB players. Only good men who totally “buy-in” need apply.
Riley has no issue with telling it straight. He fully admits that the roster needed changing, still has holes, and there will be more possible incoming through portal after spring practice. It’s almost like an NFL attitude in coaching. The players best be ready to give 100% or they are going to be shown the door. I think Riley has put us in conference championship conversation already. It’s good to have a real coach.
L Riley press conference live now on usctrojans.com
No mention of new additions today so far.
It is so obvious he is very bright and gets all of the various angles in today’s cfb, like NIL, transfer portal, location, etc. His answers are thoughtful and well spoken, unlike what we have had to endure. Extremely happy to have him in charge, and we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg of what the program will become under his leadership.
What a difference.
You have to wonder what will happen to the Michigan commits if Harbaugh goes to the nfl. Would Matt Ruhle take the job and make a difference. Could USC pull any of those commits to flip?
Across town at the other school celebrating their quarterback, they must be feeling like:
Love it!!
Scott Schrader (WeAreSC) — “2022 Dallas Jesuit HS QB Gage Roy (6-2, 185) Commits to USC as a preferred walk-on. His mother and grandfather are also USC alums and his family’s had season tickets for more than 50 years, so this is a really cool development and story late in the recruiting process…”

To the few knuckleheads out there saying they didn’t want Caleb because he didn’t commit right away, I have a question:
” Don’t you feel stupid?”
Most certainly a great day to be a Trojan
Tee Martin interviewing with the Bills for the OC position. He is the king of the Gumbo offense.
He was a better player than he is a coach.
9 score on the Wonderlic—that tee martin.
It’s a Club…they take care of their own…never say anything negative about others…and the media is complicit as well, want an example.
HELTON. Nuff said
About half way through his show today, Colin Cowherd said USC will win the Pac 12, but not be able to beat the top playoff type teams yet.
USC has lost several players which we can say good riddance to most of them. Trigg was a heartbreaker with so much potential LR could have exploited. I can see where this team as it stands now is going to be much better for two reasons, the additions brought in and the coaching up and change of culture in the existing players. Everyone should be better in 2022, I can even see Foreman coming to life on defense. Depth could be an issue in some areas, but again, coaching these players with the staff we now have is going to… Read more »
OOOH……Lots of Ws. Sorry couldn’t resist.😂
There are a lot of 5 star players that should break out. Looking to Kyle Ford to become a possession receiver like Pittman and Williams.
Foreman should break out of defense.
It is a turning point but a long time coming;
Well,my 6-6 prediction is now in the rear view mirror. I do not how good the 2022 team will be, but it is going to be much better than I initially thought. There is still a ton of work to do with the roster and the culture, particularly on D. The 2021 team was the worst D I have seen at SC and that is saying a lot. The LBs has been significantly improved and the CBs have been substantially improved but the DL is still suspect and the entire D scheme and culture must be rebuilt from scratch. I… Read more »
This announcement helps the reign of The Cat recede into the past even more quickly.
Who? What is this “the cat?”
Exactly!
I believe it is another term for a turd.😄
Cat turds can really stink….
Per USC Website on November 19th 2022 we gotta play in Pasedena vs UCLA . When we step on that field (and even if it involves mutiple tie-breaker scenarios) and winning that game gives us any (even if it ia a long-shot)scenario to win the Division ? …………. I WILL sign for that ! ……..Fight On !!!!!
By November 19, 2022 we will not recognize this team compared to November 20, 2021. I predict USC will win the South and a good shot at the conference title.
There’s a first time for everything!
“We’ve never seen a high-profile coach-quarterback combination move together from one elite program to another, but now that reality is here, and the Trojans are in position to reap the benefits.” — Antonio Morales (The Athletic)
Bruce Feldman (The Athletic) — Lincoln Riley, Caleb Williams give much-needed jolt to USC, but pump the brakes — this team has work to do “The USC O-line was very average even by Pac-12 standards. It’s very hard to make a Playoff run if you don’t have enough talent on defense and the O-line. “USC had one elite player in the program in 2021: wide receiver Drake London, who got injured and missed the last month of the season. The big wideout is off to the NFL and he will be missed and leaves huge shoes to try and fill as… Read more »
Feldman makes some good points in this article ↑↑↑↑↑.
If LR gets SC to 7. & 5 with a win over ND or UCLA would you consider the season a success?
Looking at the schedule next season, every game is winnable. It will depend on how fast everybody can get on the same page. Stanford comes early, that could be tough, Utah on the road also tough, the rest don’t scare me, even ND.
I think David Shaw has started the ruination of STAN football. I just don’t see The Cardinal as ever being dominant, or really better than being mediocre, under Shaw again.
Totally. Beating either UCLA or ND is the trump card there for me. We owe both those schools badly and beating just one of them would be amazingly great and impossible this quickly without a coach like Riley.
Throw in a crappy bowl win somewhere, and I’ll take it!
Well said.
The Trojans still here from last year were so poorly coached and trained with no discipline. Now they will get coached up, improved strength and conditioning with discipline and accountability. 2022 will be hugely improved especially as the season progresses. Not playoff ready but fun to watch again.
2022 College Football Transfer Portal Rankings
USC is #1 now with a three-point lead over OLE MISS, LSU, OU, and FSU.
247sports.com
Ha, I guess Kiffin is not the Portal King after all.
USC football ranks No. 9 in 247Sports’ Overall Team Rankings for the 2022 cycle. I don’t see much left in the Portal especially OL and DL. With 7 scholarships left we’ll see what tomorrow brings. Man, is it fun to be a Trojan! Fight the F On! ✌😆🏈
Reposting this as well:
247Sports’ Chris Hummer wrote Tuesday that Riley has the Trojans on pace to return to national prominence sooner rather than later. “Given how open the Pac-12 looks at the moment, Williams’ addition transforms the Trojans from fascinating Year 1 experiment to a legitimate threat to win the Pac-12 South,” Hummer wrote.
Interesting that OU is #8, just a point ahead of USC and the Sooners have 27 newcomers compared only to 21 for USC.
It’s utterly amazing what LR has done in such a short time. This guy takes no prisoners. I get the feeling that setbacks just roll off this guy.
After spring practice ends for teams, LR will fill in even more needs.
If JH leaves Michigan, think we become favorites for 5* OT Conley in March
My most prevalent emotion is relief, which is quickly giving way to excitement. Can’t wait for Spring practice!!!
What a pleasant surprise it was to hear this news. I could feel a little smile crease across my face. Hope is a wonderful thing.
I’m with you Allen. Had a feeling but was not positive at all.
