Ryan Kartje (LA Times) —
-
Texas Christian’s Jeremy Payne scores on a 35-yard catch-and-run in a 30-27 overtime victory over No. 16 USC.
-
Many of the same issues, like poor tackling, that plagued the Trojans throughout the season came back to haunt them against TCU.
-
Freshman wideout Tanook Hines stood out with six catches for 163 yards, offering a glimpse of USC’s potential for next season.
SAN ANTONIO — For a nine-win team such as USC, once again on the outside looking in at the College Football Playoff, the bowl season can feel a bit like purgatory. One foot in the past season, the other in the future, your team trapped somewhere in-between.
There were glimpses of each Tuesday night for USC in a brutal 30-27 overtime defeat to Texas Christian in the Alamo Bowl. There were equal reminders all night both of what could have been this season, had USC ever played at its best for long, and also flashes of why it never managed to be.
In one moment, there was freshman Tanook Hines (16), sprinting to catch a deep ball in stride, announcing himself as a rising star. In another, a TCU running back was busting his way through tackles on third-and-long, rumbling improbably into the end zone, deflating any such delusions of grandeur.
But after oscillating between those opposing poles, the final minutes against TCU took the Trojans on a tour of all their most glaring concerns from the 2025 season, from the leaky defense to the missed opportunities on offense.
The Trojans saw a two-score lead evaporate in the final minutes of regulation. They got all the way to the five-yard line in overtime, only for the offense to stall and settle for a field goal. They even sacked TCU quarterback Ken Seals on second and 10, pushing the Horned Frogs out of field-goal range and forcing a third and 20.
All signs in that moment pointed toward the Trojans securing their 10th win, a feat they achieved only once over the past eight years. But then, against a three-man USC rush and with eight defenders in coverage, Seals checked down to running back Jeremy Payne in the flat.
“We did everything right defensively to put them in that position,” USC coach Lincoln Riley said. “Give the guy credit from TCU. He made a hell of a run. We really had a great call and forced them to check down. We did everything right defensively to put him in that position, and we just didn’t finish the play.”
Payne broke through a tackle from cornerback Marcelles Williams. Two defenders, linebacker Jadyn Walker and safety Kennedy Urlacher, collided as they reached Payne next, missing him entirely. Then, he slipped through safety Christian Pierce’s hands and was suddenly sprinting free 35 yards for the win.
“Wasn’t a lot of time this year that we missed multiple tackles on a play,” Riley said. “It just happened in the worst time possible.”
That’s how most of the fourth quarter and overtime felt for USC, as TCU racked up 159 yards and 17 points over its final three drives.
Of course, there had been multiple chances before then for USC to put the game away, just like there were multiple chances for USC to make more of its 9-4 finish this season. The Trojans averaged nearly a full yard per play more than TCU. They racked up eight plays of 20 yards or more — a reminder of how explosive they could be.
In the red zone, though, the offense unraveled. Quarterback Jayden Maiava, who was inconsistent most of the night, threw a third-quarter interception in the end zone, just as USC looked primed to push down the gas pedal.
Four other times, the Trojans stalled inside of TCU’s 25-yard line and settled for field goals. In the process, kicker Ryon Sayeri set the USC record for field goals in a season at 21.
“We just did not execute good enough in the red zone on either side of the ball,” Riley said. “If we did that, it’s probably a different feeling.”
Instead, the Trojans will have to carry this bitter taste into the offseason, with questions already looming about what comes next. Not the least of which being what direction USC will take its defense, after coordinator D’Anton Lynn departed for Penn State just before the game.
USC RB King Miller is stopped short by the TCU defense in the first half during the Alamo Bowl on Tuesday night. (Eric Gay / AP)
Riley wouldn’t comment on why Lynn was replaced as playcaller the day of the bowl game. But when asked how he felt about the future of his defense, Riley projected a particularly sunny outlook.
“I feel fantastic,” he said. “But those who really study the game and watch how we’ve played and the way we’ve been able to improve, the arrow is just pointing straight up.”
Of all the questions raised Tuesday, how USC might replace its No. 1 wideout next season was not one of them. Hines had already done his part to earn that role, but declared it to the world anyway in a six-catch, 163-yard performance.
King Miller also continued to solidify his place in a tandem with Waymond Jordan in 2026, as he rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown, coming up just short of the 1,000-yard mark in a season he started as a walk-on.

But the silver linings largely stopped there, even if the circumstances made for an unusually uphill climb with USC’s roster. Over a dozen starters or would-be starters sat out. Three of the Trojans’ starting offensive linemen didn’t dress. Both of their top receivers and top tight end were in street clothes, having declared for the NFL draft. Twenty-five players listed in USC’s two-deep Tuesday were either freshmen or redshirt freshmen.
Without Lynn calling plays, which a source described as “a mutual agreement”, defensive line coach Eric Henderson stepped into the role. “‘Henny’ did a great job and the staff rallied around him,” Riley said. “It was a lot of energy with the guys.”
It went quite smoothly at first. USC held TCU to two straight three-and-outs — and just 11 total yards in two drives — to open the game.
But on the ensuing possession, Maiava threw into heavy coverage and was intercepted, his first of two on the day. The momentum USC had built up early dissolved almost instantly.
The defense’s strong start faded into disarray. And while it came roaring back after halftime, forcing an interception and limiting TCU to just 35 yards in the third quarter, USC’s offense couldn’t fully capitalize. A remarkable one-handed touchdown pass to Jaden Richardson nearly did the trick, giving the Trojans a 21-14 lead that seemed primed to balloon from there.
But it never did. And in the final, stunned moments of its season, Riley was left offering the same assurances that USC will soon be out of purgatory.
“When you’ve been in those programs and been a part of those teams that have done those things, you feel what it’s like,” Riley said. “And this place is doing all the things that you need to do to put yourself in position to go bust that door down and do it. There’s a real sense of purpose in that locker room right now. And we’ll be excited to get back to work.”

Former UW/3-star LB Deven Bryant breaks down his commitment to USC Greg Biggins (on3.com) — Washington LB transfer Deven Bryant (6-0, 230) has committed to USC. Bryant officially visited the Trojans over the weekend and committed on the trip. He has two years of eligibility left. “There were a lot of reasons why I chose USC,” Bryant said. “I had a great visit and was able to connect with coach (Lincoln) Riley and coach (Rob) Ryan. “The knowledge that coach Ryan has of the game is second to none and the history of linebackers that he has developed over the years was something that… Read more »
I’m not sure that there is another team in the country that had more players sit out the bowl game than USC. I don’t know if that is a culture problem but it’s hypocritical. Why go around saying “brother this and brother that and family this and family that” when all your care about is yourself”.
The breakdown of traditional family structure has certainly not helped our country’s culture. Self-centered thinking and actions are one of the many negative side effects of family breakdown. I could add the lack of religion in schools.
Yes I am a cranky old man, but prove me wrong.😎
You are a cranky old man that knows what he is talking about.
Two of the things I’ve noticed after breathing on this planet nearly 70 years. Dumb old ideas get recycled as something great and good ideas get renamed as something innovative.
I don’t have to prove you wrong…..I agree
Jontez Williams commits to USC: Trojans land No. 1 transfer portal CB Connor Morrissette (USCFootball.com) — Williams (5-11, 200) projects to be a plug-and-play starter at USC next season. Williams set up recruiting visits to USC, Notre Dame and Florida. The Trojans worked fast to add the elite DB after he visited over the weekend. Williams suffered a season-ending knee injury at IA ST five games into the 2025 season. CB is a big transfer portal need area for USC. the Trojans needed a one-year vet who could play immede in 2026. Done. Williams will be a 2026 redshirt SR with… Read more »
Nice!
That makes 2 veteran CB from the portal. Nice.
Has STAN already beaten USC for Pete Kwiatkowski? Could be. Maybe that’s good for all I know. Charlie Viehl (si.com) — USC HC Lincoln Riley has to hire a DC with D’Anton Lynn leaving for his alma mater, PSU. Former Texas DC Pete Kwiatkowski was linked to the USC job mainly because of his connection to USC AD Jen Cohen when the two worked at Washington together. However, college football insider Bruce Feldman reported on Sunday that Kwiatkowski has emerged as a “strong candidate” to become the next DC for Stanford. Meanwhile, LA Times’ Ryan Kartje reported that current Cincinnati Bengals DC Al Golden… Read more »
Pete K seems like he would be a great hire. But I don’t see any scenario where he would pick Stanford, which is not committed to winning, over SC. I have to believe that Cohen/Bowden are looking elsewhere, either at an NFL guy, or someone at a playoff school. Also, we got got a commitment from the # 1 CB in the portal, Williams from Iowa State
Bruce Feldman gets a lot of great info. It seemed like he stuck his neck out a little here, pointing to STAN. JMHO. Maybe Andrew Luck is a factor here somehow.
Why would he pick Stanford over SC? Doesn’t he want to win? He’s not going to win big at Stanford nor is his reputation going to be enhanced coaching those 2 and 3 stars on the farm.
You’d have to ask Bruce Feldman, who reported this. It’s not like USC wins that much either. Or maybe USC and Kwiatkowski have conditions that make them a bad match. I’m just a messenger here.
Most people thought USC would have named a DC by now. Maybe there’s a lot going on we don’t know about. I suspect so.
Well anyway, I do see one giant positive in this usc football program and that is that finally the administration is behind this football program. They weren’t always. That tells me that sooner or later they will begin to make the playoffs every year.
Golden did well at Notre Dame, terrible at Cinci. Maybe he should come back to college.
Indiana and Penn St have landed quality QB’s. Indiana also landed Nick Marsh….a really good WR.
All 11 going to Penn St are from Iowa St.
Reports are Payne is in the portal.
Viakona signed with USC
Dunn signed with USC
Now 16 bailing out of SC. Not as bad as the 27 that left last year.
If you believe the rumors to date it looks like the new DC will be bringing in Pete Kwiatkowski and his staff or promoting Eric Henderson. Henderson seems to have player support but to me he did a lousy job at the Alamo.
If Kwiatkowski is being considered Cohen better find out absolutely why Sark fired him.
One reason for the delay hiring a DC, will it be a net positive or negative portal if Henderson or Kwiatkowski is hired? Is Bowden polling his players and Texas’ players (without tampering of course)? The new world of CFB.
We do know Oregon is losing its DC and Laning may be interested in Kwiatkowski also. Could be a bidding war here? Just don’t want an inexperienced DC to take over. USC is not the place to hire coaches learning on the job and Riley should know this. Henny needs to work more in college to understand the challenges.
Henny may be the world’s greatest guy, but if he’s our next DC-To-Be, I see further storm clouds ahead.
One time we hired a coach that the players wanted really bad…..Welcome Coach Helton.
I decided last year to avoid commenting an Riley. He is clearly an elite OC and QB developer. He has three Heismans and I think two Biletnikoff award winners. No other OC is even close. Is he a good HC? Well, he is the one we have and are going to have for the foreseeable future (the cost of giving a 10 year contract at about $11 million a year). So, I refrain from criticism of his HC’s abilities to help the program. It is like having a family member about to marry someone who you (and most of the… Read more »
Rather than family marrying the wrong person, you could look at it as Riley is the good cop. He needs an O Line coach and DC to be the bad cops. The right balance of toughness and fun.
Riley needs a lot of things, including a new red zone play caller, as he specializes in getting totally stuffed when it matters most. Is that when LR’s playing your version of “good cop“? He can’t even beat a 4-loss, unranked TCU team playing a backup QB. Prior to beating USC, bench warmer Ken Seals had thrown for only 121 yds, one TD and one pick as a Horned Frog over two years. Against USC, Seals became an instant Alamo Bowl MVP. As said by another Trojan fan — “First off, hats off to TCU. They deserved the win with playing… Read more »
Hiring some bad cops was aimed at injecting some toughness culture . Riley is clearly soft. His play calling was better in 25 than 24 but still comes up short when it matters. As far as a QB “whisperer”, Maiava looked pretty bad at the Alamo. No wonder he came back. He is not NFL material, Heisman considered, or even next years starter.
The vexing question becomes, can simply hiring “tough” assistants overcome an obviously “soft” HC? Is fixing a poor team culture simply a matter of adding tougher assistants to a staff? A lot of people insist a team takes on the personality of its head coach. Unfortunately, Lincoln Riley’s personal traits don’t foster passion, discipline, finishing strong, or a kick-butt mentality. That’s easy for anyone to see. Here we are in year five of LR and the USC football culture remains consistently soft. Since Riley’s the only constant of mediocre USC football since he took over, I’d say he needs to… Read more »
Very true Allen, but when you are stuck with a soft HC, all you can do is try to get tough assistants. Maybe that toughness will rub off.
Anything to finally fix USC’s lagging football culture, I’m all for. I originally thought the simple addition of Chad Bowden and Trumain Carroll was going to have an immediate bigger impact on improving USC’s visibly lackluster, soft football culture. But not so fast my friend. However, from what I gather, the loss of D’Anton Lynn may actually help USC football in this regard. I’m officially glad he’s gone. Or maybe things have improved behind the scenes and it just hasn’t translated to the field yet. One can hope. Whatever the case, LR has to make a lot of decisions in… Read more »
I attended the Alamo Bowl. I do not if anyone else here went, but I have now attended two SC games in TX – against Tulane and against TCU. Against Tulane, I watched Alex Grinch lead the worst D performance I have ever witnessed in person by an SC team. I warned after that game that if Grinch were not fired, 2023 would be a disaster. Well, I witnessed another really bad DC job again. SC’s D was simply awful in the 4th Q. A large part of it, to my untrained eye, was the DC. Just awful defensive calls.… Read more »
First Tulane and now TCU? RJJ you need to stay out of Texas and stay home! It is clearly your fault. 😉
I am sorry for your pain, brother. Did it feel like Déjà vu all over again?😂
Wouldn’t it be crazy if OLE MISS won it all w/o Lane Kiffin? I’m not banking on the Rebels even beating MIA, but LK did an incredible job getting OLE MISS into the #6 spot in the country. It’s pretty cool to see these CFB also-rans now dominating the sport. The traditional powers and great brands may not like it, but it’s good for the game.
I’m pulling for MIA vs IU for the title, with the Hoosiers becoming the Cinderella outfit that shocked the world.
Efficient leader Sam Darnold (#3 overall pick by Jets in 2018) and Seahawks (14-3) beat Brock Purdy and 49ers, 13-3, to win the NFC #1 seed (first round bye).
Yet another example of great defense winning a game.
Go Sammy D!!!!
Allen, I don’t believe your statement about defense winning games. After all, you, like the rest of us have the burden of untrained eyes.
Fortunately, our head ball coach has trained eyes….
Very true……only the select few such as Riley understand what they are seeing.
My untrained eyes see an 8-4 season, a loss to an unranked team with a backup qb, no conference titles in 4 years, no major bowl games in 4 years and no playoffs in 4 years.
I’m missing it so someone please point in the direction I should be looking.
The way I see it for Riley isn’t too good. Think of a guy wearing white tennis shoes stuck in the back corner of a backyard where a prolificly fecal St. Bernard lives. He must watch his step or the fans are going to hit the sh:t. I am sorry to say he’s probably not smart enough to save his shoes, and it might be smarter for him to plot his exit strategy. I’m thinking Chip Kelly moves here. Quit before you are fired. People compare Riley to Helton, I think the difference is Helton was likeable, Riley doesn’t even… Read more »
Right now Riley’s record is 35 & 18. Guess what Helton’s was at this same time? 35 & 18. The culture here hasn’t changed since Riley took over. The team is still soft. I wouldn’t be surprised if D’Anton Lynn didn’t want to work for Riley anymore.
OK Seahawks……take it home.
Go Darnold! Become the first USC QB to ever play in a Super Bowl!
Nice game…..they get to sit home…..
The portal has been open for two days. Does anyone have any insight as to what SC players have opted out? Askin’ for a friend…
Tirebitter…..if you goggle USC transfer portal you’ll see a on3/rivals site that may or may not be up to date……It seems to be.
So far a few of the usual suspects have either opted in or have delayed. No one that would make a headline has decided to leave yet except maybe Thompkins.
If somebody has more info or a better site….I’am all ears……
Thank you!
Love the discussion below on the state of USC football and Lincoln Riley. Yes there was not much of an analytical approach to hiring LR. It was emotional. A massive amount of money towards an emotional decision that brings years of negative consequences to the school. Every year that goes by puts us in a deeper hole, another piece torn from the great legacy of USC football. Will USC leadership go the way of LSU and make an expensive course correction ? You know the answer. Is Lincoln Riley motivated to finally square his shoulders to his mediocrity as a… Read more »
The least Lincoln Riley can do is start drinking decaf …
He is excellent at closing contract negotiations for head coaches.
Little did we all know USC and Mike Bohn were getting totally fleeced by Lincoln Riley and his agent, Trace Armstrong. Hindsight is 20/20 of course. But giving a wildly overpriced 10-year contract to a young Air Raid coach with limited contacts, a horrible record for defenses, and who never built anything in his career was plain old stupid. Many would say well, then, Riley wouldn’t have come. Big deal. USC could have obviously done a lot better, but Bohn never did any in-depth, intelligent eval of under-prepared, but very shiny young Riley. Bohn just desperately dove in, checkbook wide… Read more »
Best post ever! The stench is everywhere and we SC football spiraling away from a great tradition!
Yes sir!
To bad Riley spun his wheels for two seasons with life centered around Caleb Williams. We gained nothing as a program those first two years, even though it was exciting to watch Williams. Now he is playing catch up. He has the staff to do it mostly, just needs a linebacker coach and someone that knows how to teach D linemen how to not give up 5 yard push back every play.
I would have thought Cohen, Bowden and Riley would have their DC by now. Trouble finding someone to work with Riley? Someone looking to move up to HC when Riley gets canned next season? Someone holding out for more dough? Afraid of losing recruits and players if Henderson or Belk aren’t the guy? Still no hint of rumors.
Thinking the same thing GT. I guess it comes down to what Jen-Chad -Lincoln think what the Portal is all about to those players who are in it……. money and not who coaches what. It’s a dream come true for player agents & parents.
Could they have their eye on a coach still coaching?
I would take Indiana’s DC in a heartbeat after what we saw in the Rose Bowl.
Would you ever leave a Curt Cignetti-coached team to coach under Lincoln Riley?
I Googled that exact question and my immediate response was “highly unlikely.” 😂
Would anybody in their right mind agree to be under Riley…..the answer….yes……once they are six feet under. 😎
Could it be someone involved with the teams still in the playoff? Some players are posting they want Henderson. Bad choice. He is rumored to go to GA Tech, his alma mater. PK would be a great hire, funny they haven’t closed that yet. I just wonder if Aranda is going to be back as HC at Baylor again.
Henderson might turn out to be a great DC but do we want to take a chance on someone who has no experience as a DC? Check his record….He’s never been a DC in his life. Big difference between a position coach and a DC. 2026 will be a make or break year for LR. Can he afford to make a mistake?
Do you really think 2026 is make or break for LR? Nobody that I know expects USC to even make the playoffs.
I don’t expect USC to win more than 8-9 reg season games, max. And I don’t expect the Trojans to get into anything more than another also-ran bowl game, where our better players all opt-out again. That seems to be a SC thing for some reason.
And I don’t expect Jen Cohen to fire LR based on that either. She’s still trying to raise money to finish the Bloom Football Performance Center (LR’s baby).
I can’t say for sure if it will be make or break. It would be if I was AD. I’m sure two people like Cohen and Bowden who are the type of people who will not be satisfied with anything but total success(that’s part of their nature) are already thinking….“USC made the wrong decision with this guy and we can’t wait forever for a coach who doesn’t (at this point) look like he is ever going to get the job done”. If he goes 8-4 next year, that’s 5 years on the job with just a little more success than… Read more »

Correction: Illinoisusc not Patrick9, too many long lists for my untrained eyes. Oregon has to go all the way for 3 way tie.
Thanks for figuring all that out……Go Oregon! At least for a week or two……
Although playing Indiana looks really tough……and Miami looks like another tough game.
Frankly, Oregon has a really tough travel schedule. Everything seems its on the east coast. They need to move this old fashioned site arrangement to somewhere a little fairer…..say Indy or Denver. Cold weather….The fans are a small part of the game it’s all TV eye balls.
Riley and SC had a two-score lead late in the fourth against a mediocre opponent and found a way to lose. Riley seems to do this a lot. Riley is an incredible quarterback developer and makes a very good offensive coordinator. But it is clear now that he cannot build a winning culture that remotely compares to the past coaches such as Carroll, Robinson, McKay, etc. Riley looks more like Helton or Hackett (except for the good offenses). It is not what I expected when watching the press conference announcing his hire. Because of Riley’s contract, he is not going anywhere. He does not appear to… Read more »
I would have agreed in the past with your two compliments to him about developing QBs and being a very good OC, but I no longer believe either. Neither Moss nor Maiava have continually improved, and when Moss got in a funk, LR couldn’t/didn’t pull him out of it. Maiava still makes the same mistakes he made last year. A very good OC does not repeatedly get first and goal opportunities and have such a poor conversion-to-TD rate. On the other hand, I absolutely believe that culture is critical (see Indiana, Saban’s Bama, etc.) And that LR has no concept… Read more »
Lincoln Riley’s been publicly promoted over and over again as a so-called “offensive genius.” Frankly, that’s just a joke at this stage, especially in the all-important red zone, as is obvious to those with an objective yet untrained eye. USC’s latest horrible loss in the Alamo Bowl to TCU again showed LR simply lacks what it takes to build an elite Trojan football culture. Watching USC fold late in games under Riley is as predictable as seeing Xmas trees lined up on the street to be picked up after the holidays. I wish LR was a lot better coach than… Read more »
We need to get lucky in hiring a head coach like we did with John McKay, John Robinson and even Pete Carroll. PC was not considered an accomplished HC when we hired him. Lucky, the way Indiana got lucky when they hired Cignetti. It’s beginning to look like we got unlucky when we hired LR.
After thinking about it……Bohn was hiring a coach for the Pac 12. I don’t forgive the hire but understand it. An air raid offense might have worked in a conference that had quite a few lesser programs and weak defenses that was somewhat pass happy because the weather is mostly near perfect. Riley has no interest in defense and the PAC was not known as a conference of great defenses, except for USC. It was a high scoring conference. Highly entertaining. Given our quality of recruit an air raid was not necessary but Bohn might have been more interested in… Read more »
Riley may have no interest in defense but I think he has started to see the importance of it. As I have said before, 11 out of the last 25 NC’s have finished #1 in the country in total defense and 22 out of the last 25 have finished in the top 20. The 10 year contract was too long. Even Kiffin(who is a proven winner) only got 7 years from LSU. With next years brutal schedule I would say 10-2 is out of the question. I even think 9-3 is wishful thinking. It’s more like 8-4 or(like you said)… Read more »

Nobody unexpected so far. Keep your fingers crossed.
Colin Cowherd — “People often ask, ‘Is the American Dream still possible?’ Damn straight. The answer is Indiana Hoosier football. From pathetic to powerful. Awful to awe-inspiring. Doormat to dominance. Great coach, the right boosters, remarkable quarterback, and they play real defense. Is Indiana the best tackling team that you’ve seen in recent years? For those of you that watched the Indiana game and saw the Cignetti interview…..
He said, I ask the folks that indicate an interest in Indiana…..do you want to work hard…..if you don’t, don’t come here.
Kids will work hard if led…..our coach did not visit Mater Dei for his first three years and then had to be pushed.
I just came across this site. Fascinating statistical analysis for those of you who geek out on this like me.
Have fun!

I’d love to see an Indiana vs Ole Mis championship game.
I’d rather see IU v MIA. That’s the ticket for me. Go Hoosiers!
That’s my option 2.
5 of 6 red-and-white trams are now out with TTU, tOSU, AL, OK and GA all having lost. Only the Hoosiers remain.
We see which teams played hard & smart enough to win these past two days. If you want some truthful opinions as to why USC wasn’t one of these teams, get on UTube and watch Inside she Trojan Huddle and think to yourself if what you hear is true about this program right now.
We made a big mistake when we got rid of Lane Kiffin. He built this Mississippi team. He’s had only one losing season(5-7) in 14 years of coaching. We should have let him at least finish the 2013 season. It wasn’t as it he was 0-5 when they fired him. He was 3-2. He had a winning record. Firing him after only 5 games was stupid.
Lane had a great 2011 season but we were not great in 2012 and had the awful game in the Sun Bowl. The loss to ASU the team looked totally unprepared. So he can see why he was let go.
Our mistake was not keeping Coach O and trying Sark.
He still had a winning record when they let him go. At least let him finish the season. If he couldn’t right the ship in the next 7 games then let him go. Either that or fire him in the 10th or 11th game of the season.
Lane’s had the last laugh. Good for him. He made lonely OLE MISS football a big deal, and now he’s the HC of LSU. Smart guy.
He was 8-5 in 2010 but he lost 3 games by 4 points or less.He was 10-2 in 2011 but he lost to Stanford in triple overtime at Stanford. I’m pretty sure that was the game where USC was ahead with not much time left in regulation time and the time keeper, who was dressed in a Stanford jersey with a Stanford baseball cap, forgot to turn the clock on giving Stanford extra time whereby they drove downfield, kicked a FG and put the game in overtime. 2012 was a disaster and I’m still not sure why it happened but… Read more »
I’ll never fully understand the “tarmacking” of Lane Kiffin. He should have never been fired that way and as you say, he should have at least coached the entire season.
USC is still trying to recover after all these years. Going 9-4 and losing the Alamo Bowl to unranked, fully mediocre TCU with a team that can’t tackle is par for the course nowadays.
2026 will be a real challenge for these Trojans, even without ND on the schedule. Portal, here we come!
I was listening to one podcaster. He said that after the game he went into the tunnel. He saw 3 TCU players standing around so he went over and said “can I ask you a question”. They said “sure”. He said “what did you think of the way USC played today”? One guy said “they played like their heart wasn’t in it”. Another guy said “they played without effort”. The third guy said “maybe they thought we were a pushover”. SC probably had more players who chose not to play than any other bowl team(although I can’t prove that). They’re… Read more »
There are fans out there who believe these freshmen stars are going make an immediate impact. There will be some benefit but it’s going to take a season at least for them to develop enough to hold their own.
This already legendary USC freshman class (in the minds of some at least) will have to grow up very fast. As the game of CFB has changed so much recently, maybe some of these freshmen will be surprisingly effective earlier in their careers, especially since older players often leave for other programs, leaving gaps.
I think we will see something really exciting come out of the WR room. Between Mosely and Feester we may forget Branch, Lemon and Lane. Who knows.
I forgot Branch a long time ago, until he turned up as a star for GA. 😉 😂
Next years schedule is going to be tough. I hope they develope fast.
The good thing is not only that they are rated high but that there are a lot of them. The competition this coming year is going to be fierce. Competition creates excellence. Remember what Pete Carroll used to say…..COMPETE!!!!!
Yes, if we had the 2025 version of Lane when he was our HC—but we had Kiffin when he was still developing. Two different coaches
We had Kiffin when under such severe NCAA penalties, no coach in America could made the Trojans look good. Take away a whopping 30 rides and two seasons of bowls back when they mattered, give many others an instant free ride out of your program, just for starters, and see how anyone else would have done. Even Nick Saban would have wilted.
Well maybe that’s an encouragement. Maybe LR cam evolve as LK did.
Ya, we’re all still waiting for LR to “evolve.” It’ll be great when he finally starts to actually do that instead of showing all his annoying flaws again in the TCU disaster.
Well, I wouldn’t exactly bet the ranch on it but it’s possible.
When you are paying the HC some $11mm a year, the expectation is that he is already a fully accomplished coach, not some guy who needs to “evolve”.
Right?
We’re already under contract so we can’t do anything about the money. But we can hope. Hope springs eternal.
Sure, but originally the expectation was a “finished project”, not a trainee. We could turn off the water in his bathroom, or unplug his TV, or, better yet, Assign his parking space to maintenance folks?
Will Christian Piece [24] remain at USC or will be transfer out now that he is on everyone’s *hit list?
He’ll stay. His brother just transferred in. But will somebody please teach him to wrap up and not just hit hard and bounce off.
Georgia goes down and the teams with byes are now 1-7.
Couldn’t be happier that UGA lost.
Even great coaches blow it. Kirby Smart blew it by not punting with 9 to go.
Great victory for OLE MISS over GA, 39-34. Awesome. Lane Kiffin gets another big payment out of this, no doubt.
I’m confident he’s updating his resume to add the win to his record.
Another big play by.a former Trojan, Branch on D.
Branch again!
Branch gets another one!
Former USC speedster Zach Branch makes phenomenal falling-down-backwards catch to bring GA back within three. OLE MISS leads 34-31 with seven mins to go.
Another Trojan lost!
Branch was awful last year, and I can’t blame that on the coaches. They coached Makia Lemon into being the best receiver in America.
Branch was not helping USC while here. We needed more from him which never came. He didn’t want to get hit always making fair catches on special teams and mostly running out of bounds rather than trying to fight for extra yardage and wasn’t that dependable making catches. He was never going to overcome Lane & Lemon.
GA was more than happy to help the Branch’ bros get out of USC, where they were both unproductive and practically silent.
They both played much better and more often at perennial title contender GA from what I saw. It was a good move for them to get a chance to play in some big time bowls and get better coached and utilized by Kirby Smart and staff. Z Branch had no trouble taking big-time hits at GA, so the culture is obviously different over there.
Don’t the coaches signal what the punt receiver should do?
I don’t have a “trained eye” but I did return punts….
I returned a few punts too. Tougher than it looks IMO.
OK! Weren’t you given instructions on return, not return, likely direction?
Wow, Kirby Smart is not so smart! 3 pt game, 9+ minutes to play, punt it away.
The last time the Rose Bowl has seen a team look this bad was … well, every UCLA home game this season. – Brett McMurphy.

Go home, Alabama.
Where your fans are so blue.
Go home, Alabama.
Nobody’s crying for you.
I don’t dislike Deboer, but I sure did enjoy seeing Bama get absolutely destroyed.
Ya, ALA took a big-time licking. I kept wondering what Nick Saban must have been thinking. DeBoer better be careful. Losing four games a year, and getting smashed by both GA and IU, won’t let you last at ALA.
Accordingly — Kalen DeBoer hints at immediate major changes after ALA’s humiliating blowout loss to IU.
“You’ve got to go back to starting over from scratch with putting the people around you, the right people, committing to something, a common goal together, and the actions following it,” DeBoer said after the Rose Bowl.
Saban supposed to be non-biased now that he’s a color analyst has always chosen Alabama to win games when asked as he did here at the Rose Bowl. He doesn’t want to ruin his dealerships businesses around town. But you noticed he wasn’t around after the game to admit Bama got gutt punched and damn lucky it didn’t get shut out.
It was wonderful to see ‘Bama utterly humiliated and punched in the mouth. Hooray. Too bad Tide. It’s your turn now. We always knew post-Saban was gonna be brutal.
What we never guessed was that IU would be the new sheriff in town!
Alabama is getting so blown out that DeBoer may get canned
Something that hits you right away with Indiana…..they sure can tackle.
Sure tackling—I thought only trained eyes knew why that happens.
LOL…..Some day Coach Dummy will figure it out…..Cignetti with guys nobody else wanted is beating up Bama……while our pretty good talent (I admit it’s not Oregon level) loses to…..TCU.
😜
I haven’t seen a shoulder-bump tackle attempt by them all game.
That’s a USC specialty, haven’t you heard, vT? Sometimes I wonder if USC’s coaches actually teach it? Maybe with a new DC and some different coaches, the USC shoulder-bump tackle hopefully will take a hike.
Just wondering if that is just another sign of the lack of culture, players not willing to put it all out there for coach and team?
I believe that.
Welcome to young american culture………..give it 150%……..WHEN I FEEEL LIKE IT!!!!
😅
Something that hits you right away with SC……they sure can’t tackle
So true. IU plays at a totally different level from USC in many respects.
Curt Cignetti is crazy good, especially for a guy who never smiles. 😉 What focus. Can’t wait to see him matched up against ORE and fellow uber-coach Dan Lanning on Jan 9 in the Peach Bowl.
Next week I will be Indiana’s biggest fan.Nothing personal against Lanning, but I hate Oregon!
Indiana vs Oregon will be a more competitive game. Just too bad OSU couldn’t hold up to Miami’s physical play. Ole Miss will not beat Miami.
First round bye teams now 0-6. Can Indy and Georgia break the jinx? If I had bye I would run a full contact scrimmage on the day of 1st round.
The CFB BCS could be expanded to 16 teams and eliminate first round byes–but then maybe the Conference Championship Games would be would need to go away?
DDS……don’t you think it’s time? The bowls look weak also. Just make it a basketball like playoff and shorten the regular season by eliminating two OOC.
??
I still want the regular season to mean something. I am not as big a basketball fan as I am for football, but I don’t bother watching regular season college basketball. It’s a 30 game schedule to play for seeding in 68 team tourney.
Got it…thanks
Well…..Oregon is in the final 4 with Miami. At least one BIG.
Come on Indiana….crush the tide.
Anybody else find it irritating to see 3 former Trojans battle in the trenches in a playoff game? Why don’t we have depth on the lines? Why couldn’t we keep those guys?
Did it ever cross your mind that they didn’t want to play for Lincoln Riley?
Good answer, big uglies have no respect for a guy in yoga pants!
Riley’s an Air Raid coach. He tries to hide it, but that’s his gig. Personally, I haven’t heard that he’s viewed as very inspirational by the players. Just another reason to doubt his chances for great success at USC. It’s not a strength LR has. Some coaches don’t need it. Others do.
By the fact that USC has never showed up fired up to play is a clear indication that LR is not inspirational. Could you imagine LR teaching a class like PC did last semester?
I think that applies to Assistant position Coaches and Coordinators as well, Riley doesn’t seem to have a deep Rolodex.
This is the reason we had the number 1 class. We lose so many that either find more cash or don’t want to play for Riley etc. We have tons of recruits. It’s like a mouse on a treadmill claiming progress. If we lose Husan….coach dummy ought to be hung. We have tons of linemen that have not signed yet. The portal opens Friday.
In a word…YES!
Lanning does have a weakness….Oregon should be up by 19 or more…..he keeps taking aggressive chances that he does not need to do. His defense is totally dominant.
Seen him do this game after game. Sometimes aggressive makes sense, sometimes it’s just not smart.
If Dan Lanning were USC’s coach, USC would easily be the dominant program in the west and where the Ducks are now.
Yep!
I’am telling a guy who drives a Rolls Royce his tires look a bit muddy.
I wonder how the SC Prez feels about that, or the Distinguished Profs? That aside, who would want a Rolls? What does that say about him?
Do we have a new president yet? I know Little Foltie retired.
Not yet, Kim is still holding space.
Question for the Blog: which coach started the program of having the third string players jumping up and down? As a former third stringer, I find that to be phony and humiliating. Can you imagine MacKay, PC, JRob asking their players to do that? Or those players asking their parents to go to a game and watch them jump? It’s all so wrong. It ranks just behind losing the historic ND rivalry.
I always think of it as girly.
It looks ghey. 🤣
Adam Rittenberg (ESPN) — NW is set to hire Jerry Neuheisel as QB coach.
Neuheisel, who played QB at UCLA like his dad, Rick, is a former Chip Kelly asst at UCLA, who remained with the Bruins under DeShaun Foster and became the team’s offensive play-caller after Tino Sunseri stepped away this fall.
Dan Lanning is 42-1 at ORE when leading at half. He knows how to finish, unlike Lincoln Riley.
ORE leads TT 6-0 at half in a Orange Bowl defensive struggle. Will Lanning up his streak to 43-1?
The seats are only 40% full……..nobody at the game……wonder why? Heck, if they are that available I might get my old bag of bones together next year and travel down.
Tinook Hines appears to be the real deal. He had 34 catches for 561 yards this year as a freshman. When Lane and Lemon were freshmen they had 7 and 6 catches for 93 and 88 yards
Mario Cristobal has been at Miami for four years……he just smashed Ohio State University and is in the final four. Frankly, I never thought he would be a good game coach….but he did it. Good for him.
I hope USC’s head ball coach was watching that game. It was a case study on what defense means to a team.
When the Coliseum was indeed the mecca of college football, apparently all LR remembers are Bush, Leinart, Jarrett, et al, but overlooks Cody, Patterson, Bing, Rucker, et al.
Yes indeed….those names will ring in history for USC fans.
I bore my family to death by telling everybody that the first recruit of note CPC worked on was Cody…..the best DL around for that year. CPC knew what makes a great team. Sadly, Riley does not.
Give Ed O much of the credit for Shaun Cody. Ed O was such a phenomenal recruiter. He was as good as I’ve ever seen.
