Actually, whatever Paul Finebaum says is pure entertainment for the CFB world. I mean that in the best sense of that description. It’s all good.
His overly malicious comments about Lincoln Riley bring eyeballs and ears to the sport, so his comically haughty yet sourpuss, self-important persona is something to laugh at for me.
I couldn’t care less about some of his off-the-wall opinions, though he should be pretty damn well informed and clued-in about the SEC.
But anybody who denies that Lane Kiffin has done anything less than fantastic work at OLE MISS is either off his rocker or getting paid for making statements like that — just like Finebaum is. Kiffin’s now entering his 5th year at OLE MISS and making $9 Mil+, with a Top 5 team. At OLE MISS, that’s a miracle.
Finebaum’s comments about Lane Liffin (“I don’t think he’s that funny and his coaching has been underwhelming. Lane’s a hypocrite. He blames me for getting him fired at USC. I don’t really take Lane Kiffin seriously. He’s the Miley Cyrus of college football.”) are pretty easy to figure out.
Kiffin totally hosed and abandoned TENN (Finebaum is an alumnus) in the middle of the night after only one year on their sidelines. That was a brutal move, and Lane could have still made the move and surely handled it considerably better. A few burned mattresses would have been saved.
Lane would be the first to admit that, but SC was at the time his dream gig. It all happened incredibly fast under immense pressure, and I don’t see many CFB or NFL coaches passing up those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.
Plus Kiffin always gives as good as he gets, and he rips Finebaum whenever it suits him. Again, for me at least, it’s all entertainment for the CFB world and furthers the sport. Here we are on the TDB talking about these guys.
Lane, always one of the best in the biz for ideas, quotes and comebacks, describes the NIL as “legalized cheating. You just told donors you could pay the players. That’s what you did.” Sounds correct to me, though the Supreme Court would accurately tell us that “cheating” has been necessarily redefined in the interests of player rights per the U.S. Constitution.
My last thought about SEC honk Finebaum is that he is unquestionably terrific for USC football. Why?
Finebaum can’t ever seem to get the Trojans (or their former coaches) off his mind. Were I the deservedly beleaguered Lincoln Riley, and suffering massive verbal abuse every time Finebaum opened his mouth about me, I’d be on my toes 24/7 to finally start getting the job done at USC that I promised every USC fan I would do when I took the job in the first place.

Even if they can’t hold onto him, it is sending a message to the rest of the country when they can go into Georgia and keep getting these 4 and 5 star commitments.
The new guy from Hancock JC looks really nimble and quick for 355 pounds if you watch him on tape. I don’t know how long it will take them to teach him the system and work him into the rotation. A lot of people say he will end up on defense.Looks like a guy who could clog up the middle.
It’s great that we seem to be in the top 3 or 4 for every possible recruit. But when it comes to recruiting, being in the top 3 or 4 is no better than being in the top 100 if you don’t get the recruit.. Being close only works in grenades.
Two more strike outs. SC lost out to LB Christian Gass and DL Floyd Boucard. Sometime USC needs to get a win especially on Defense. USC supposedly has the best D Staff in the country. Can’t they convince some of these guys?
I posted here back on 7/15 that Georgia LB Christian Goss had both TENN and GA in strong positions and he ended up with the Vols. Three-star Miami DL Floyd Boucard (6-3, 315) picked LR’s old stomping grounds, OU, instead of the Trojans. Boucard — “The loyalty and love they’ve (OU) been showing since Day One. They saw something in me other teams didn’t see before, so I had to go with them.” BVM Sports — “Boucard become the fifth DL commitment in the Sooners’ 2025 class. For a long time, USC was considered to be in the lead to land… Read more »
Hear ya. I think convincing a 4*-5* big leaguer to join a team that was close to the bottom in CFB defense 2023 is a tall order. Having a great new D staff is excellent, but probably not enough for recruiting. as we’ve seen, to change the narrative. What makes it harder is that many of the top coaches now, were big time D coordinators, or ran programs that had big time D coordinators. Riley stuck with a DC considered the bottom of the DC rankings. We need some luck and a respectable defensive year to climb out of this.… Read more »
I guess if you can get big time money you want to go with a program that is a proven product not just what staff has done elsewhere. To think what a guy like Matt Entz has done making champions out of second level talent in the FCS, What is he going to do with a 4-5* FBS guys? Same goes for Eric Henderson and D’Anton Lynn. Some of these guys gotta think they will get great coaching on D at USC? Like we’ve been saying, gotta prove on the field. Still think come November things will be a whole… Read more »
C.LR, C.DA Lynn and his D AC are getting left in da dust by the top 15 schools. I can understand not bidding and paying for 5* players. But, come on they can not even land 4* and 3+* players. Pathetic and disgusting recruiting results thus far. Someone said dat don’t worry it’s only July, but most of the better D players have committed to other schools. As good as the D coaches are, they need top players period. Sorry, USC FB recruiting is in a FU state… Cheers.
It’s true when you think about it! Every athlete, every one of them who have committed up to now to any program can easily change their mind even the morning of the December NSD. Committing now has means nothing assuring where a player will sign. So let’s keep that in mind. It is my understanding if a HS Senior athlete has received money from any program, he can still sign with another program on NSD and doesn’t have to give that money back? If so, there will be those programs out there looking pretty stupid. This is why the success… Read more »
It was explained from solid board members have posted at other boards, players will get a small % of upfront money and (most of the balance in monthly increments. Dat’s to protect schools from players bailing with allocatedf monies. The majority of schools won’t give 100% up front monies to any player Reasonable and smart plan.
Annually, only a small % of committed players flips in late Nov and before the early signing date in Dec. Getting early verbal’s from the top players is crucial.
OK, I agree coaches will recruit players until the very end and may filp a few committed players… Cheers
I’m glad you agree Canyon, players do flip around NSD and silent commits do happen. A few recruits have said they want to see how this season goes to make up their mind about USC. If we see Coach Henderson and Noa perform some magic in developing the D-Line this season, I would feel pretty good about it sinking into the heads of those who visited USC but committed elsewhere. When Trojan football is alive & well, it’s pageantry & glamour reaches the mind!
EA Sports’ “College Football 25” is paying out nearly $10 million to over 11,000 FBS players from 134 teams. That’s about $900 average, a minimum of $600, some high profile players getting more. Oh and a free copy of the game. EA Sports raked in $70 million on Monday with prelaunch.
Special day for me, my youngest Son just enrolled in the Marshall MBA program. That just ads to my Grand Daughters acceptance as a Freshman next month. My Son sent me my USC Dad T-shirt, but he couldn’t find a USC Grand Dad T-shirt.
Fight On…from Texas
You watch the PC teams on UTube with the defense controlling the line of scrimmage and its physicality along with the offense going up & down the field. It This is what recruits need to see this season from USC. LR & his coaching staff needs show they are building a winner.
Sure WRs and even QBs will look at the Trojan program, and maybe DBs. But we need linemen (both OL & DL) & linebackers. They pretty much shy away due to how poorly the 2023 team played. LR knows very well he cannot allow the same results this season as last or his recruiting reputation will take a huge hit. It’s make or break as far as his reputation stands regarding USC’s immediate football future.
Comforting to know USC isn’t too far gone in attracting linemen interest. But as you say, it’s still shaky and non-binding as all so-called commitments right now. The coaching staff & this season’s team has to win and look good doing it. That will give LR his best and maybe only chance to sign a top 10 class.
LR simply cannot be out-game managed by his coaching foes. Get out in front and protect that lead by the end of the 4th quarter especially when playing the top teams on the schedule. He should have the offensive weapons to score with his offense. The ability of the new defensive staff to put their players in the position to make the plays and TACKLE. I would think it would be to our advantage for the front 7 to stop the rushing game of the opponent and force them to pass against the strength of this team.
My fears exactly, Jam. We may. be able to compete with our first team starters, but god help us if we have even only 1 or 2 injuries in the trenches🤔
I think the best thing that can happen to this guy is to “ignore him” not talk about the trash he spews out of his mouth. If he finds this website today he will gloat winner to himself!
I’m hoping Paul runs across this. We’re all over the best USC FaceBook sites. 99% of the voluminous comments about him are hilarious and incredibly derogatory.
Fineybottom reflects the fan base of ‘Bama. ‘Bama fans, much like the UGA fase-base, are a bunch of provincial honks. Trust me, I deal with them down here every freakin’ day.

Calif., UCLA)
USC has Cowherd so guess the SEC can have Finebuam (aka Mr. Potato Head). Does the Big10 have a promoter? It’s one thing to promote but to spread misinfo or denigrate the competition is another. Calling for firing top flight coaches or ones after a year or two on the job looks terribly biased.
Whatever happened to the LB Garrison who was supposed to have sideline to sideline speed? Did he just turn out to be a bust?

Congrats alfa1!
Thank you Allen.
Nice intro article, right in there with Luca Evans … Kudos
Fantastic, alfa! Just get them back home after graduation. The Peoples Republic of Kalifornia is no place to start a life these days!

Bruddah Jamaica, according to poster at a USC FB site (TOB), after their visit on 6-7-24, these 3 DL gave C.LR and staff silent verbals?
Floyd Boucard, 6-3, 315 lbs
Malik Autry, 6-5, 310 lbs
Randy Adrika, 6-3, 290 lbs
USC has a good shot at Calif DL, Al Iddrissu, 6-8, 250 lbs
You know silents are shaky as heck. Hopefully, at least 2 of them ends up good for USC.
