USCโs new-look defense is predicated on inter-positional versatility
New defensive coordinator DโAnton Lynn and a new defensive staff make clear at USCโs media day on Wednesday that versatility is a foundational key for the Trojansโ 2024 defense
Luca Evans (OC Register)ย —ย LOS ANGELES โ Bryson Shawโs lake-blue eyes darted around the interior of the lounge inside Heritage Hall, touching for split seconds on individual peers within USCโs secondary, engrossed in similar conversations at spaced-out black tables.
โI think everybody in this room is worthy of starting,โ Shaw said. โI really do. I wouldnโt just say that.โ
Now, of course, he didnโt quite mean everybody. This was USCโs 2024 media day, after all, and a majority of the folks milling about in the room were journalists who would likely incur lifelong medical bills trying to cover a Power Five conference wide receiver.
But nine other Trojans defensive backs sat nearby, and Shaw gestured at a couple of them, a group that has gone from fatal weakness to the rosterโs strong point in the matter of an offseason. There was sophomore Christian Pierce, who Shaw called one of the hardest-hitting safeties heโd ever seen. There was redshirt sophomore safety Zion Branch,ย whose only barrier to a breakout in 2023 was injuries. There were seven others fighting for a job, and a handful more not even inside the room, freshmen or upperclassmen who had already spoken plenty to reporters.
โI mean, I can go on and on,โ Shaw said. โI think, top-to-bottom, literally everybody can play.โ
And everybody, mostly, can playย everywhere. Everybody, in USCโs new-look defensive system, is simply โa defensive back,โ as Shaw put it. There are cornerbacks on the roster, sure, and there are safeties, butย new defensive coordinator DโAnton Lynnย and a host of new assistants spent the summer months challenging players to learn USCโs defense, regardless of position. If you were a defensive tackle, you pushed yourself to learn the entire front. If you were a cornerback, you pushed yourself to learn the nickel.
The exact intricacies of Lynnโs scheme โ and its efficacies โ have yet to reveal themselves, significant hopes being placed on a revivalย after the 116th-ranked doldrums of 2023. But coaches and players alike made clear at USCโs season-opening media day on Wednesday that this defense, in large part, will be founded upon versatility, on a host of athletes interchanging between different spots in different packages on both the front line and the back-end.
The pot of this concoction began to simmer in February, with drawn-out shop talk among USCโs newly hired staff, fromย defensive line coach Eric Hendersonย toย secondary coach Doug Belk to linebackers coach Matt Entz. Lynn presented the core philosophy of a defense he had installed in his one season at UCLA, taking the Bruins from one of the worst units in the country to one of the best. Then he welcomed input.
โI want this to be everyoneโs scheme,โ Lynn said, โnot just mine.โ
Thereโs a pinch of Henderson here, who grew into one of the most respected position coaches in the NFL in his time with the Rams. Thereโs a sprinkle of Entz there, coming from an FCS dynasty in North Dakota State. Thereโs a helping of Belk, too, bringing over defensive coordinator experience at Houston. But thereโs a shared vision of a fundamental defense that plays fast, free, and has the intelligence and flexible personnel to counter offensive looks on the fly.
The versatility begins up front, where Henderson brings an NFL background seeing the game evolve beyond one-position players on the defensive line.ย Junior defensive end Anthony Lucasย has put on 10 pounds since last season, and he will likely see some looks on the interior. Vanderbilt transfer Nate Clifton has officially shifted inside to defensive tackle. Players will play multiple positions, Henderson emphasized Wednesday, a concept he believes in.
โThis defense that weโre going to utilize is going to position a lot of these guys to be top draft picks, or have the opportunity to position themselves to get drafted,โ Henderson said. โAnd itโs going to highlight their skillset, and thatโs all. I just donโt want these guys to have a small-mind mindset.โ
At linebacker, returningย Mason Cobbย will likely fill more of a weakside role after playing last season primarily as a mike, duties set to fall uponย Oregon State transfer Easton Mascarenas-Arnold. In the secondary, reigning Holiday Bowl Defensive MVP Jaylin Smith might cover the gamut during fall camp โ cornerback, nickel, dime, safety โ before coaches officially decide on a primary position, Lynn said. Fourth-year safety Anthony Beavers Jr., meanwhile, has been moving between safety, linebacker and nickel. Wild cards abound.
โThat just keeps other people on their toes,โ Beavers Jr. said. โBecause you never know where somebody could line up, and that helps us be more interchangeable and show different looks.โ
โI definitely think it can elevate the ceiling, just everybody being pushed,โ he added later.
It was โa little unique,โ as Shaw admitted. But the group, he emphasized, was loving it. And a host of returners and new transfer faces alike โ drawn, like former Florida State corner Greedy Vance Jr., to Lynnโs NFL pedigree โ have monumental expectations for USCโs defensive unit come 2024.
โWe have the potential,โ Mascarenas-Arnold said, โto be one of the best.โ

Rutgers will have had the Little Gutties at home the Saturday before. I think having a late game (11pm EST) on a Friday will hurt a jet lagged SKs. Hopefully the Maryland game ends early for the Trojans.
Well, we are one month out from LSU. I am really looking forward to this season. I cannot recall the last time I felt this optimistic about an SC team. The national media (and candidly most local media) has dumped all over LR and treated him as a has been. It has dumped all over this SC team, claiming it lacks toughness, heart, talent and the ability to play D. It is a projected reasonable best case of 7-5 and unranked. I love it! I do not know if it is Kool-Aid or not, but I think LR learned a ton from last year and has changed for the better. As I wrote months ago, it is like SC hired a new HC but kept its OC (who is the best in collegiate ball). I love it that the national media has assumed that the 2024 model LR will be a duplicate of the 2023 model. I think they got it wrong. We will know for certain within the next 7 weeks.
I read both the national and local media much differently than you do. I’ve literally seen dozens of magazine and on-line stories, as well as CFB podcasts/radio summaries heralding Lincoln Riley’s great offensive reputation and mind while blaming USC’s sorry D on the finally exiled Alex Grinch. Some have even praised LR for his misguided loyalty to Grinch, as if that assertion makes any sense whatsoever. Great points all around Allen. You peaked my attention with the “a generational QB who was allowed to run the undependable “Hero Ball” offense, while LR sat on his hands on the sidelines”. USC’s offense last year was a classic example of how numbers don’t tell the whole story. USC could only score 20 points vs both UCLA and ND who both slaughtered us. All the dumps and claims against LR and USC football are currently valid. They have to prove otherwise. 8-4 is a good conservative guess. There is no telling where we would be right now if LR had decided to go out and bring in the best DC that was available in the country when he first came to SC. It took a 2023 season to convince LR that he needed to build a defense. Sure looks like espn doesn’t think much of USC. What else is new. A win over LSU will change things a lot, and a win over Michigan will really wake up espn. I am going for a one loss season if all I have read is true about our staff and the changes made. Just stay healthy.
Good question. I think they will be up for the big games with LSU, Mich and Penn St, and they are always up for the ND game. The lesser games could have an upset along the way.
Well….camp opens Friday so the fun is just beginning. If as you believe we go 11-1 and we get a good slot in the playoffs. I bet they stick us with playing Oregon just to goose the ratings.
Nothing would make me happier than to play the quacks in a playoff and put them where they belong. I don’t know of a team I dislike more. If we go 11-1, first game would probably be from the bottom 8. If that is where Oregon finishes, even better. Yep, the sunshine is getting pumped for sure.
Just as long as the defense does not have to wear a wristband I will have seen progress. How could this defense not be better than the one last season. Even with some lack of depth, with players knowing how to move to other positions helps remove some of that weakness. Our defense will be good, as long as it remains relatively healthy. USC, the big surprise in the B1G. I just hope they prove Finnebaum, the mouth of the south, wrong.

Let me say this, I want USC to continue to play ND every year. But not at all cost. The 2005 game I literally felt like I was going to have a heart attack! USC and the rest of the Big10 and SEC have embraced the future of college football. ND is living in the past. Back in the past, when the NC was awarded, you had to have a resume of games not just be undefeated. Even in the BCS you had to have quality wins to be one of the top 2. Thought you would like the “mediocrity”. ð. I would be shocked if ND spiraled down like Stanford. Irish boosters and alums wouldn’t stand for it. Looking at their future schedules it is heavy ACC with bottom feeders in the Big10 and SEC. Fla. St., Clemson, Miami Fla. need ND with the weak ACC. You are not going to see Alabama, Georgia, Michigan or Ohio St playing ND in November. What’s the value? Beat your team up in the middle of trying to win your conference and be ready for the playoffs? I just think down the road, outside the ACC,… Read more ยป
I couldn’t care less what ALA, GA, MICH or OHIO ST do. They’re scheduling decisions are up to them and they’ll have to do what they think is right for their own programs. None of them play ND every year, so they have much different agendas respecting the Irish, our greatest big-time rival. USC has something special none of them do — a game vs ND every year. This is strictly between USC and ND. ND’s respectfully and intelligently all on board, as are many of us USC fans, including Chris Arledge, Marc Kulkin and Erik McKinney, the big cheeses… Read more ยป
I would absolutely hate to see the ND game go away just play it in October. With no other Power 5 nonconference games. Nothing wrong with October in LA.
Allen I watched the podcast. Where we agree, if you keep ND, then drop the other Power 5 nonconference games. But don’t play 2-3 Power 5 teams out of conference. You already have a tough road in conference. I will go with keep ND but play it no later than mid October. One more thing to think about. If a team goes from one loss to 2 or 3, they drop from a 1-4 seed to 5 or worse. Now you got 4 games to win a NC instead of 3.
There have been a lot of positive changes to the USC Defense, including the new coaches that have been brought in. The proof will be how SC performs starting September 1 vs LSU. When I was a student at USC in the 1970s, Head Coaches John McKay and John Robinson always had a strong Defense coordinated by Marv Goux. So many great players, but my favorites were Charles Phillips (I played high school football against him), Clay Matthews Sr., and Ronnie Lott. I’m hoping both the coaches and players step it up this season as last year was a disaster.
USC’s Andy Benesh (6-8, left) and UCLA’s Miles Partain (6-2) are making quite the beach VB team in Paris. Great power, speed and savvy on the sand.
After beating Brazil yesterday, the Team USA duo will next compete in the round of 16 on either Sunday, Aug. 4, or Monday, Aug. 5.

Boom! Easy enough.
We’ve got RUT on a Friday night (8 PM PT) in L.A. after a trip to College Park, MD. The Scarlet Knights beat MIA last year in the Pinstripe Bowl.
Right after RUT, USC heads to Seattle for a battle with the Huskies.

Sure looks like espn doesn’t think much of USC. What else is new. A win over LSU will change things a lot, and a win over Michigan will really wake up espn. I am going for a one loss season if all I have read is true about our staff and the changes made. Just stay healthy.
Steveg…….I’am interested in which of the big 4 do you think we lose to…..Mich, ND, Penn St or LSU……or do we get tripped by a nobody?
If USC is not in the playoffs maybe we can knock ND and Penn St out!
John, my wife was wondering if we are doing a contest this season? I hope so after getting humbled last year.
Hi Steveg and Mrs. Steveg: yes I will be doing a regular season contest and bowl contest. I will have the information up in the next week or so.
My wife is thrilled, thanks John.
John, Thanks, looking forward to it.
Pioneering the Way in Hall of Fame: USC, Notre Dame Victor Haltom (College Football Dawgs) — No schools have more players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame than the USC Trojans and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. And, it is not close. Fourteen Trojans and 13 Golden Domers are in the Hall of Fame. (Another Notre Dame alumnus, Edward DeBartolo Jr., was inducted into the Hall of Fame for front-office contributions.) Only 3 other schools have broken the double-digit threshold, and just barely—Michigan (11), Ohio State (10) and Pittsburgh (10). Historic Programs Beginning with their inaugural season in 1887,… Read more ยป
Thanks for that Allen, just proof USC is truely a blue blood in college football.
In the now past CFP, you… Read more ยป
I couldn’t disagree more with your assertion that ND needs USC so much more than USC needs ND. Neither could WeAreSC’s Chris Arledge, Erik McKinney, and Marc Kulkin. Here you go. You probably won’t enjoy what each has to say (if you are even interested) concerning their firm wishes/demands that the greatest intersectional rivalry in all of CFB continues to thrive every single year going forward. Inside the Trojans’ Huddle ND football somehow fading into perpetual “mediocrity” is one of the more laughable, non-plausible eventualities I have ever heard you say about college football. I can only presume you are… Read more ยป
