I took off this weekend for some R&R in Ojai. After a long, fun day around town and the area, we plopped ourselves back in our hotel room, looking to relax after also attending a 90-year old friend’s birthday. I’ve never heard the song Happy Birthday To You sung so many times in my life to a person who is probably hard of hearing! Lo and behold, I turn on the TV and see that the 1987 USC/UCLA game pitting Rodney Peete against Troy Aikman is on. We’re mid-way through the 2nd half or so and USC was trailing. But… Read more »
IMO Allen, the play of the game came at the end of the first half. Turner intercepted Pette’s pass in the end zone and nearly ran it all the way back before Peete ran him down and made the tackle.
Peete also face masked Turner and it wasn’t called. At least that was my impression.
Thanks for reminding us. Assuming that the CA dictators allow for full seating in fall (fyi, TX has lifted all Covid restrictions – it is basically gone from TX), with SC and UCLA both being out of both the national and divisional races (for SC almost a certainty, for UCLA a strong possibility), what do you think the attendance for the 2021 game will be? My guess is about 40,000.
That 1987 win over the bruins was still one of my all time favorites.
Peete had UCLA’s number, and a great smile to go with it. He didn’t impress me as much as a passer after all this time, but he was a great Trojan QB IMO and one of the most popular Trojan players ever. Win or lose, I always felt confident when Peete was taking snaps.
Hopefully, some USC president never begs him to take the AD job, because we all know how that would turn out and I would hate to lose another Trojan hero to the official Unqualified USC Admin bin.
Hell of a baseball player too Allen. 👌
Good memory Terrific Tommy! Several great SC football players also played baseball for SC. In my days as a student from 1973-1979 (went straight to grad school after bachelor’s degree), Anthony Davis, Marvin Cobb, Rob Hertl and Anthony Munoz were a few of the guys who played both sports and played them well.
I also enjoyed the following year’s game in the Rose Bowl dubbed “The Measles Game”.

Notice that Steele and ITS (both 5 star CBs) and Johnson (a 4 Star) are all off this list. I wonder how Steele will do this year. ITS has 4.4 or lower speed. My guess is SC DBs will be good next year. So, ASU is much stronger at CB than SC. Should be one of the more interesting seasons in years, primarily to see what the future of SC football will be.
As is often the case these days, no one has any idea of what USC is gonna look like as a team in the fall. ASU will be coming off WSU in Tempe, a nice little warm-up for USC. USC will be coming off ARIZ in L.A., also a nice little warm-up game as well. While I believe ASU will beat USC in Tempe this year, I think USC/UCLA on 11/20 will be a real barn burner, at least if Slovis is still upright. I don’t really have any idea who will win that one and am making no projections… Read more »
Allen, Thanks for all the hard work on the ranking. If I am interpreted Hoffman correctly, SC has the best WRs and QB in the Pac with one decent back (at transfer) combined with a questionable OL. The D has one decent inside DL and solid outside personnel, which matches all the analysts I have read. Dane Miller appears not to have done a lot of homework; he is, I think, the only analyst I have read that has pick SC to win the South. Mandel and Wilner have them battling for 3rd, and most place them at best in… Read more »
Follman didn’t have one single USC OL or TE earn his favor. Running the ball seems to be a constant uphill battle for USC every year now. Why would a fantastic prep RB even come to USC? Because USC has a whole bunch of older RBs who once won the Heisman? USC is a passing team now, with amazing QBs and WRs every year. I admit, Graham Harrell hasn’t actually shown he has learned how to produce a decent ground attack since he took over at USC. I had expected much more, even with now-Bruin Drevno perpetually stuck in neutral.… Read more »
Without having done all the necessary research on the other teams, and relying on Utah, I have SC battling CO for 4th in the South. The Championship is going to be between UCLA/ASU/Utah. Remember Chip’s giant bamboo. This year he is predicting it will grow 90 feet after being dormant for 3 years. I think UCLA has significantly more upside than SC in 2021 but it has a history of choking away games it should win (did that 3 times last year). SC, on the other hand, has a history of playing really ugly games and relying on luck/opponent mistakes-choking… Read more »
Helton definitely needs to re-look at the USC game tapes of both 2019 and 2020:
Gentleman Clay recently told Fox reporter RJ Young he likes Graham Harrell because he “just doesn’t force the pass. He’s got the discipline and the patience to mix in the run game, especially with the runners we have.”
Let’s see: the 2020 Trojans were last in Pac-12 rushing (97.3 ypg) and 10th in conference rushing in 2019 (118.2 ypg).
Nice try Clay. Just another reason why you are so difficult to believe when the facts are compared to your predictably worthless statements.
Clays reality has never been based in facts. It is always sunny in clayland.
With his Built-by-Swann bank account, Clayland is indeed sunny!
Yes but the mayor is also the court jester.
Dane Miller’s Pac-12 Football Post-Spring Power Rankings — With football season less than 100 days away, the time is ripe for an early assessment 1. Oregon 2. USC — Every season expectations are high in Los Angeles, and every season the Trojans seem to fall short. Forget the three South Division championships during the Pac-12 Era—and don’t even mention the fourth that was technically awarded to UCLA due to NCAA sanctions. The perception remains that SC has underperformed, given the talent on its roster. But with the promotion of renowned recruiter Donté Williams to associate head coach and the return… Read more »
I don’t know what Dane Miller’s credentials are, but I am not in agreement with his ” analysis”. I doubt the Trojans are even the 2nd best team in the South. He is overrating a Stanford team on the decline, and overlooking the Utes. And as much as I would love to agree with his assessment of the bruins, no way there are 8 better teams. ucla may be poised for a breakout year, and will certainly, at least be improved. I see 6-6 for this year, and probably 4th in the South. The good news is that type of… Read more »
All true! Maybe 7-5, 8-4 if a bunch of more miracles happen in favor of USC.
Name your six USC losses. That’s where I run into trouble.
ASU, Utah, Notre Dame, ucla, and at least one game we have no business losing, a trademark of Clay. Maybe, because of a weak schedule they get to 7 wins.
Helton is a delusional fool, and I have to tune out his comments, because they are detached from reality. His analysis of Harrell doesn’t fool anyone.
I think all of us can name two for certain: ASU and ND. I am putting UCLA as a for certain loss. You are not. It looks like Utah and BYU may have top 25 teams. If that is the case, probably two more there (maybe 1). So, put two losses out the 3 better UCLA, Utah and BYU. That leaves a lot of really weak opponents – San Jose State, Oregon State, CO, Cal, AZ, and Stanford. These teams are all in the 30-60 range with AZ may probably being the worst of the group and maybe being closer… Read more »
So, it sounds like you are hedging Rjj, and can’t name the six losses.
You have ASU, ND, UCLA, UTAH, and BYU beating USC. Who is #6?
I think the strongest possibility is Colorado for #6.
Karl Dorrell strikes again!

Bryan Carrington and USC’s beefed-up support staff enter the spotlight as recruiting ramps up Antonio Morales (The Athletic) — After 15 months of in-person recruiting restrictions, June is a massively important recruiting month for college football programs across the country, particularly at USC. The Trojans have spent the past 18 months bolstering their support staff and making nearly every assistant coach hire with an eye toward recruiting — from cornerbacks coach Donte Williams to safeties coach Craig Naivar to tight ends coach Seth Doege — for moments like this, when player acquisition moves to the top of everyone’s list of priorities. “This team and the construction… Read more »
