‘Overlooked’ no more, USC DL Gavin Meyer is playing key role for resurgent Trojans
The Wyoming transfer came to USC at the buzzer during the spring transfer portal, and he has beaten out incumbent Bear Alexander for a starting spot through the first two games
Luca Evans (OC Register) — LOS ANGELES — It wasn’t like Gavin Meyer and his agent had never heard the name Bear Alexander.
When the 6-foot-3, 290-pound Meyer arrived to USC in the spring, it seemed like a last-gasp effort to add stable depth to a thinned defensive line, Meyer entering and exiting the transfer portal at quite literally the 11th hour and 59th minute. Other names in the crop – Derrick Harmon (now with Oregon) and Damonic Williams (Oklahoma) – came and went. Meyer was the lone body remaining, a pleasant Midwestern kid of blue jeans and blonde hair and baritone who had played four years of Group of Five football at Wyoming.
Quietly, though, USC saw Meyer all along as much more than depth. And as the program’s longtime X-factor Alexander missed spring practice with an injury, the Wyoming transfer acclimated himself so quickly in the fall that he’s nabbed a starting role through the early part of USC’s season.
“They were very transparent during the recruiting process that it would be an open competition,” Meyer’s agent Miles Jordan said of USC, “and that – you know, look, they want to win, and their defense has had some struggles in the years past and they’re going to play the best player.”
With a year of eligibility remaining, Meyer wanted to prove himself at the Power Five level, his high school coach Louis Brown said, and was hearing whispers he could have a shot in the NFL. So he departed Wyoming for the portal – but not until the absolute last day (May 1) that the spring window was open.
This was strategic, for two parts. One, Meyer affirmed: he wanted to complete his degree at Wyoming and graduate before leaving. Two, Jordan affirmed: he had increased leverage, one of the last proven defensive tackles left up for grabs.
Still, though, they were highly intentional about making sure any teams recruiting Meyer weren’t simply making a last-ditch play for depth, Jordan affirmed. And the agent had personally pressed USC head coach Lincoln Riley “pretty hard” on that note, Jordan said, not wanting Meyer to burn his last year of college football sitting on the bench.
“There were a couple different things that we helped negotiate,” Jordan said, “that gave them confidence as well that, ‘Hey, this is someone we gotta treat at the same level,’ just with different things in the contract.”
Riley made clear, speaking with a small group of reporters in late July during the Big Ten media days, that USC had to be “really conscious” of how bringing in a late spring addition could affect the program’s established culture. That was never a concern with Meyer, a young man who once would pop up randomly at youth games in Wisconsin simply to support his Franklin High coaches’ young sons, as Brown recalled.
“From the first time I met with him, like, it was just – he checked every single box on the field and off the field,” USC defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn said Wednesday. “And he has not disappointed at all, from the way he carries himself in the meeting room, to walkthroughs, to individual drills.”
“He’s just a guy that does everything right.”
He’s been “overlooked,” as fellow defensive lineman Jamil Muhammad put it. Overlooked no longer. Meyer has trotted out with USC’s starters for two straight weeks, starting in place of incumbent Alexander in one of the early season’s more intriguing subplots. After two years of solid production as a starter at Wyoming, he’s been stout against the run and tipped a pass for an interception in USC’s victory over Utah State on Saturday night.
“You see the experience,” Riley said of Meyer before Week 1, “of a guy who’s played a lot of ball.”
By contrast, Riley emphasized to reporters – when asked about a Meyer-Alexander depth-chart question – that junior Alexander was “still very young on the football field.” Still, though, Alexander has played a key role on an ever-rotating defensive line under new coach Eric Henderson, with just one less snap (49 to 48) than Meyer through two weeks and more third-down looks against Utah State.
“I’m sure you’re going to see a pretty steady dose,” Riley said in late August, “of both those guys.”

It sure looks like the Rams are missing Henny. Nobody on the team knows how to tackle any more. I have never seen so many missed tackles by a pro team.
If Arkansas St. scored 18 points against Michigan, SC should be able to score at least 40. If they score 40, they will win because Michigan doesn’t have a good enough offense to score 40.
The bears and Caleb need to figure it out. He won’t make it past game 5 or 6 at this rate. They just didn’t block at all, and he was t great by any measurement.
I agree, the oline was horrible, Caleb’s was not able to hit his receivers with any consistancy and he took too long to call for the snap.
On the other hand, listening to Lincoln Riley talk about how smart Miller Moss is and how the two of them relate on a most basic level which helps with the execution of the game plan is very telling.
It has become a meme of sorts for USC quarterbacks in the professional arena. Highly regarded quarterbacks from USC get drafted by teams who think the only offensive weapons reside in the backfield. I’m not sure if it’s poor coaching or poor personnel, but you can’t pass effectively if you are flat on your back 7 times a game. When and if Chicago gets serious about protecting their assets in the backfield, the offense will get better.
I watched the Bears last night and I saw exactly what I expected from Caleb. There are very few QBs who have a mental clock fast enough to survive on a team where there is little to no o-line protection. And Caleb is not one of them. The scrambling ability that saved him in college is not really going to be his savior in the NFL. Without that, he takes too long to process what is happening, and make the quick throws that are needed without throwing picks. When he did make quick decisions, it was just to throw the… Read more »
That line blows my mind. Just over a week ago the line hovered between + – 8.5 to10 favoring Michigan. After this past week, I imagine Michigan is gonna try to run over us.

Well that was an expensive lesson. I’m glad it’s just points and not money because if I lost that in dollars, I’d be sitting on the curb wondering why my wife was so upset.
Anyway has anyone else heard the rumor that the Mountain West is looking to cover the loss of four teams by inviting UCLA to jump again? If they can get the Bruins and Cal and Stanford they might just make a go of it. (I’m starting the rumor so feel free to spread it)
For me personally, I certainly under estimated Notre Dame and Oregon’s abilities to return to ‘form’ while on the road. I thought they would win, did not think that they would crush their opponents.
I watched the Utah game being played at Utah State’s home field in Logan. The crowd at the stadium was absolutely electric the whole game and gave their team a real boost. Utah played without Cam Rising again and struggled offensively in the first-half but performed much better in the second half. The Utah qb (Isaac Wilson) threw two picks otherwise the spread might have been 24.
I saw that video, and Bill sounded and looked Drunk. He called Moss a game manager. The guy is an absolute embarrassment.

Their HC said they were going to “kick ass” At the Rose Bowl earlier this week. The game looks like two high schools playing eachother with penalties galore.
The refs are trying to get UCLA back into the game by kicking out Hoosier players for “targeting” or calling unnecessary roughness on perfect sacks. Disheartening to watch the refs needlessly dominate games.
Some of those calls were really bad, the worst being the “Phantom” roughing the passer call. Indiana had two key players kicked out. And they won by 29!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gotta love it
Absolutely. So maddening to see a good player kicked out of the game when he’s intentionally turning his shoulder and body to tackle in the least harmful way — only to still be called for “targeting”, or roughing anyway! And then the penalties are justified by the talking heads for reasons that make little sense to me.
It makes one wonder how players are to be taken down with no penalty being called in some circumstances. 🙄

Saban says what bothers him about watching #4 ALA this season so far is that they play “Big, Little.”
“I always hated it when our offense played ‘big, little.’ You make a lot of big plays, but then you have a lot of negative plays, and inefficiency on offense, whether it’s sacks, fumbles, penalties — all the things that put you behind the down and distance, so you can’t sustain long drives, keep the ball, and control the tempo of the game.”
Saban’s Big, Little comment cracks me up. Sorry, his last 2 years Bama’s O was average and very inconsistent. He kept switching QB’s, OL and such. Run game was OK. Bama had a tough time scoring pts. The inconsistency in this Wisconsin game was due to 2, 1st string OL were out with injuries. The 2 reserves had a tough time but settled down. The 1st half was rough, but C.Deboer and his OL coach fixed things in the 2nd half. Hell, Bama beat a good Wisconsin team, rolled up 407 T yds, holding Wisconsin O to 290 T yds… Read more »

Dave Wannstedt thinks underachieving ORE has really been hurt by the loss of Bo Nix, who had such an incredibly quick release and was a great decision-maker, and their young, rebuilt OL. Dillon Gabriel (from OU) hasn’t been able to make things happen nearly as quick once the ball is snapped as Nix could. So it’s been sack city in Eugene so far. For Wannstedt to say that is very encouraging. We don’t quite have OSU talent, but if we somehow played them in CCG, we wouldn’t lay an egg like last time. If you recall, Gomer ( the Cat) was in charge. We are light years ahead of what he was doing.
Former USC DL coach Dave Wannstedt (’83-85) on B1G Today:
“I’m anxious to keep track of USC here.
“Guys, I’m telling ya, they were a team that last week we said they weren’t in the ‘big conversation.’ But now, It’s Ohio State and USC in my mind. I’ve watched all the games. They’re the two teams that jump out at ya.”
Unfortunately, our last meeting with the Bucks was a game to forget, a 24-7 loss that wasn’t that close.
This surprise (at least to me) rehab move by the Pac-2 to establish itself as a minor player in CFB is an amazing short-term accomplishment in my eyes.
The six teams in the new slimmed-down Pac-8-to-be look like they all fit well together.
The new Pac-8 commish sounds like she’s a helluva lot smarter than George Kliavkoff, who proved inept and naive, leading to USC stomping the life out of the Pac-12.
Good for ORE ST and WSU. I’m glad they are finding a way to stay relevant despite being ignored by the bigger conferences that now rule CFB.

This is the historically significant 1955 Trojan helmet, with the old signal bar facemask, the middle stripe, and the diamond on the side. It was the only year USC featured the diamond, which was there to signify USC’s 75th-year diamond jubilee anniversary.
In 1960, John McKay removed the stripes from the USC helmet forever more.
I wish USC would wear a throwback uniform on some special occasion someday, featuring the 1955 helmet worn by players such as Jon Arnett, C.R. Roberts, Ernie Zampese and Marv Goux (below).
I see ALA a lot differently. The double stripes on their pants completely change the look of their uni, as the total white of PSU is much more classic to me, and a much less commonly used look in the game. Also, the ALA helmet stands out because they always have those big numbers on the sides of their helmets, which clutters up the Tide helmet in a way that isn’t necessarily bad (I’m sure ‘Bama fans love it!), but it’s just a lot less simple than the PSU look, which as Fox’s Jenny Taft noted, is definitely “cleaner.” I… Read more »
You wonder how the B1G can make the claim they are such a powerful conference with those results. Alabama, Clemson, and Georgia have put the hurt to all the other teams. I am hoping some equality is arising. Oregon=N/A!! What a bunch of posers.
Recruiting USC’s last two recruits, Ty Jackson and Moala, significantly moved up their decisions and closed down the recruiting process. Similarly, USC’s next expected commitment, Jerome Myles, has pushed up his commitment date. It seems that USC is now a hot destination and is no longer willing to hold spots for players who want to keep their options open.
CAL and STAN should get the best lawyers possible to get them out of their ridiculously unfit ACC affiliation and get back to the reborn Pac-12 which is now looking for two more teams to reach eight.
They’re legally trapped for sure unless they can find a way to incite a mass mutiny and blow up the conference, which they can’t.
Just another strange turn in the evolution of the realignment world. I can’t believe I feel sorry for STAN and CAL. But I’m happy for ORE ST and WSU. Now, we just need the Beavers to beat the Ducks this weekend in Corvallis.
Wouldn’t that be sweet!! I took the Beavers this time. It seems the mass mutiny would be next to impossible with only FSU and Clemson strongly in favor of it. I wonder if Stanford and Cal would want to come back actually.
It would be so much better for both STAN and CAL at this stage, but that’s only my knee-jerk reaction. Neither care as much about football as many other programs and their fan attendance only gets good when they play each other or someone like USC comes into town. CAL needs ho-hum, in-the-dumps UCLA to give it $10 million annually to feel good about itself. When IU, ORE, MINN and IOWA show up in the Rose Bowl, which team will have the most fans in the seats? Maybe the knee-jerk reaction was Stanford and Cal rushing to join the ACC. Perhaps they should’ve held pat a bit and worked more closely with WASt and ORSt toward a common goal.
But it does look like they are better off from a purely financial standpoint, at least for the time being. They will not get anywhere near the same level of financial and exposure lift that the P12 teams who have joined the B1G will, though.
The Elitist arrogance of STAN & CAL has always burned me up. Couldn’t be happier that they are after thoughts in the ACC. Sux to be a Bear or an Indian (yeah, the Trees as a nickname was so gay).
The “Conference of Champions” is on the way to rebuilding, starting with the acquisition Thursday of four Mountain West schools: Boise State, San Diego State, Colorado State and Fresno State. They will begin play in the new league in Fall of 2026. The dominoes start falling again. What happens next with the Mountain West and the rest of the group of 5 conferences?
I got an email from Fresno St and it said they are definetly going. It will sure cost a lot of money, I hope the PAC# can help these teams pay their way out. I have heard it would cost over 100 million.
The San Diego UT says the Pac? will have to pay the Mtn West over $10 million per school and each school will have to pay $20 million. That’s over $120 million total the Mtn West will get for 4 leaving.
The Pac? pays a poaching fee to the conference they steal from and the schools pay a fee to the conference they leave. It’s part of conference agreements.
What we were hoping for in the answer to the disappointment of top HS recruits shying away from USC couldn’t have happened any better. A successful quick start in the season. The defense has now answered the question of doubt as to USC football now a complimentary complete football team. With a win next Saturday, Trojan football will be a top ten program and considered a playoff contender.

Hell, Bama beat a good Wisconsin team, rolled up 407 T yds, holding Wisconsin O to 290 T yds… Read more »
Stock Up, Stock Down: Evaluating USC football’s play after two weeks per Connor Morrissette (USCFootball.com) STOCK UP: D’Anton Lynn USC DC D’Anton Lynn has immediately turned the Trojan defense around. At every level and by just about every metric, the USC defense has improved markedly from last season. It’s not easy to orchestrate defensive turnarounds as seamlessly as Lynn has in back to back off-seasons. Other schools and NFL franchises will surely have Lynn on their radars. STOCK UP: Miller Moss CBS Sports NFL draft analyst Chris Trapasso’s latest 2025 mock draft has Moss going No. 3 overall to the New York Giants as the… Read more »
Dave Wannstedt thinks underachieving ORE has really been hurt by the loss of Bo Nix, who had such an incredibly quick release and was a great decision-maker, and their young, rebuilt OL. Dillon Gabriel (from OU) hasn’t been able to make things happen nearly as quick once the ball is snapped as Nix could. So it’s been sack city in Eugene so far. You can see the parallel to USC here and it’s working in reverse benefit to USC. Miller Moss specializes in also getting the ball out quickly, like Nix, to help his O-line, while the uber-talented Caleb Williams… Read more »
For Wannstedt to say that is very encouraging. We don’t quite have OSU talent, but if we somehow played them in CCG, we wouldn’t lay an egg like last time. If you recall, Gomer ( the Cat) was in charge. We are light years ahead of what he was doing.
I still have PTS about Uncle Hugs being in charge of the program.
Funny Stuff. Rudy has entered the transfer portal.
More on Gavin Meyer and how he and D’Anton Lynn impressed each other right off the bat… Ryan Kartje (LAT) — Gavin Meyer made it clear to D’Anton Lynn upon first meeting him that he’d have no trouble picking up the Trojans’ new defensive scheme. For more than an hour on his visit, they talked about the finer points of defense, while Lynn rolled tape, peppering Meyer with questions. “We’re talking Xs and O’s, concepts,” Meyer said. “He’s asking me, ‘What do you see here? What do you see here?’ And we’re going back and forth, back and forth on… Read more »
A good example of what’s great about the transfer portal. A guy at a Group of 5 school not getting much love, finds a coach he gels with, now playing for one of the best defenses on a top 10 team.
This kid sounds like a future coach after his NFL Career,
10 best college football uniforms in 2024, per FOX Sports’ Jenny Taft (7 of 10 are B1G schools) 1 MICH — The Maize and Blue color combination with the winged helmet make for the most iconic – and best – uniform in college football. 2 Notre Dame — The traditional navy blue and gold color palette has stood the test of time as one of college football’s best. I also really like Kelly Green as a third color option, but still prefer when the Fighting Irish stick to the more traditional look. 3 TEXAS — When Texas is “back” (are… Read more »
PSU—let’s wear our practice uniforms for the game!
Oregon: a stylist from San Francisco puked on a color board, no rhyme or reason.
ucla: baby blue is what you dress your new grandson in when comes home from the hospital. On a football field, that wussy color inspires no fear.
I actually like PSU’s uniforms. They remind me of the beautiful Dodgers uniforms, just no red number.
Jenny Taft described them perfectly: Iconic. Classic. Navy. White. Clean.
The Dodger logo and the LA on the cap makes the uniform. Penn St needs a logo on the helmet.
Not really. The single blue stripe on the PSU helmet perfectly ties their whole uniform together and is instantly recognizable.
And I have always thought the plain white Dodger pants have always been one of the best parts of their uni.
You would call them “practice.” I would call them classically cool.
Forgot about the blue stripe, simple is classy, still needs the lion logo on the helmet,😎
How about against Notre Dame? We beat them 42-20 on November 26, 1955.
Would you say the same about Alabama? Same logic would apply, just different color.
I see ALA a lot differently. The double stripes on their pants completely change the look of their uni, as the total white of PSU is much more classic to me, and a much less commonly used look in the game. Also, the ALA helmet stands out because they always have those big numbers on the sides of their helmets, which clutters up the Tide helmet in a way that isn’t necessarily bad (I’m sure ‘Bama fans love it!), but it’s just a lot less simple than the PSU look, which as Fox’s Jenny Taft noted, is definitely “cleaner.” I… Read more »
I like when PSU does the white-out thing for some home games. Pretty cools site.
Awesome spectacle IMO. Perfect for their uniforms.
Yeah, that!
Clean…until the USC defense smushes them into the Coli turf.
You wonder how the B1G can make the claim they are such a powerful conference with those results. Alabama, Clemson, and Georgia have put the hurt to all the other teams. I am hoping some equality is arising. Oregon=N/A!! What a bunch of posers.
Ducks keep spending a lot of money to be perennial also rans.
It’s nice to be respected again and in the drivers seat for recruiting.
CAL and STAN should get the best lawyers possible to get them out of their ridiculously unfit ACC affiliation and get back to the reborn Pac-12 which is now looking for two more teams to reach eight.
If they signed the same rights deal as the rest of the ACC, it could be a tough battle. It would be great if they could pull it off though.
After what I saw in Hawaii, UCLA fans could already be selling their… Read more »
Maybe the knee-jerk reaction was Stanford and Cal rushing to join the ACC.
Wonder where that $120M came from.
The Pac? pays a poaching fee to the conference they steal from and the schools pay a fee to the conference they leave. It’s part of conference agreements.
PAC Commissioner said they were going to help pay exit fees. She also note that the PAC12 has 250+ million dollars to use to grow the PAC.
