USC loses once-vaunted depth at receiver. Younger group gets ready for the Holiday Bowl, while a new QB visits campus…
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — Dennis Simmons had spent the better part of the last two decades coaching college receivers, so it was no small thing last fall, when he suggested that USC’s receiving corps was the deepest he’d ever coached. With so much talent, it seemed the biggest task facing the team’s receivers coach would be managing all the egos involved.
“Now I understand why Dr. Phil gets paid the amount of money he gets paid,” Simmons joked in August.
Four months later, the depth Simmons once enjoyed has since disappeared, leaving USC with glaring questions at a position that not long ago seemed like a strong suit.
USC’s two top receivers, Brenden Rice and Tahj Washington, made their intentions clear to declare for the NFL draft over the last week after accepting invites to the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine game, respectively. Then, on Friday, Mario Williams entered the NCAA transfer portal, leaving USC without three of its four starters from last season.
Williams was the third USC receiver in the past week to enter the portal, joining Raleek Brown and Michael Jackson III. Once a five-star recruit, Williams followed coach Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma, only to watch his production diminish over the course of his time at USC. Last season, Williams was plagued by drops but finished with 29 catches, tied for third on the team.
In all, USC is now slated to lose at least 65% of its production at the receiver position.
That mass exodus leaves the Trojans with only two upperclassmen receivers entering the offseason, Dorian Singer and Kyron Hudson, neither of whom were able to establish a consistent role in 2023.
Singer arrived at USC as a top transfer last offseason from Arizona. But after leading the Pac-12 in receiving as a sophomore, he had only 276 yards receiving in his first year at USC.
It could mean USC is left next season with two sophomores as its top receivers, albeit both of them five-star talents. Zachariah Branch (1) might very well step into the No. 1 receiver role, after the electric freshman became the first Trojan to be named an All-American in his first year. Duce Robinson, meanwhile, finished tops on the team in average yards per catch (20.47) and flashed plenty of big-play ability as a freshman.
USC should add two more four-star receivers to the fold next week on national signing day in Ryan Pellum (Millikan High) and Xavier Jordan (Sierra Canyon).
Regardless, USC’s passing attack is bound to look different next season. It’s not even clear yet who will be throwing to the Trojans’ suddenly thin group of receivers.
Miller Moss will start the Holiday Bowl, but other dominoes could fall at quarterback in the coming days and weeks. One of the nation’s most coveted transfer quarterbacks, Kansas State’s Will Howard, visited USC on Friday.

Just looked at the roster, 25 R.S. Seniors 2 NFL Draft 12 Transfer Portal and potential 4 Seniors. That is 43 players leaving the team this season, that’s half of the football squad.
Starting over with a completely new approach to defense and a greater emphasis on toughness and accountability should be fun to watch USC try to implement over the next several months. USC’s “culture rebuild” remains a long way from being over after The Cat set us too far back, and LR stumbled badly. Thus far, the coaching changes have been inspiring. But who knows about the inbound Portal transfers? They seem like 50/50 bets (if that) at best after our fiasco 2023 season. Hopefully, USC’s evaluation methods and efforts are improved in this area, but I’ll be glad when USC’s… Read more »
Lynn had one good year as a DC. Houston’s defense was not much better than USC, so we shall see on Belk. Entz is unproven at Power 5 or even Group of 5 level. I’d say the new defensive staff is an unknown. Recruiting and Portal results will be the early tell. The two OSU guys are a good start.
Donte Williams was always a crap DB coach at USC. Belk will obviously be a big improvement. Entz is a great addition to USC. I don’t see the “unproven” part of his resume at all. If anything, he’s the most proven part of USC’s coaching additions. NFL-grounded Lynn changed the entire footprint of laggard UCLA football in only one season. I don’t need to see any more from Lynn to know he’s a 200% improvement over Grinch. I’d say that USC’s new defensive staff additions are already clearly a vast improvement over the worst USC D ever fielded. Nothing seems… Read more »
I do not think SC wins the Holiday – our crap D combined with an O that lacks Caleb, our best RB, and 4 of our top 5 WRs (Rice, Tahj, M. Jackson and M. Williams). I hope I am wrong, but I just do not see how SC wins this one. And remember, our crap D is being coached by guys who have been fired (and hence are out looking for jobs). Hell, our DB coach is probably already in GA.
GT, I back Allen100% on this. Lynn is probably one of the best young DCs in the the nation. What he did at UCLA was remarkable. It shows incredible upside. Grinch was the worst DC in SC history (which is saying a lot) and clearly the worst in P5 for both 2022 and 2023. Entz is one of the best coaches in the nation (he is very similar in background to DeBoer at UW). He is gigantic improvement over Odom. I will go so far as to say, he is probably more of an improvement over Odom than Lynn is… Read more »
RJJ and Allen, you have such faith that the D staff is going to be great. Then below state how little regard you have for LR and wouldn’t mind if he left. Let’s just say I’m skeptical. After 2 years I would not have expected a complete overhaul of the D staff, retooling of the S/C program, and still see a fumbling NIL program and soft O Line. I fully expected USC to be running like a race car at this point. Enfield was hired after one good season. If not for the Mobley brothers what has he done? I… Read more »
Enfield has nothing whatsoever to do with USC football, so he’s irrelevant, as are the Mobley brothers. JMO. LR stunk up the joint last season, so we’re all on board to give him another shot to start doing what he was hired to do in the first place. If he were gone, I couldn’t care less. As I said, Jen Cohen has already proven to be a much better program builder than LR. So far, LR seems to have gotten the message that he needed to change his crappy, delusional, one-sided approach to fixing USC football. Good for him. Maybe… Read more »
My point with Enfield was that one good season doesn’t make a great coach. The new hires certainly have the potential to be great. They will be light years ahead of Donte and The Grinch. The 3 Portal guys on D show these new coaches have respect.
Allen, It is going to be interesting. I just read Arledge’s column and thought he got it right. He made three points: First, it is now clear that LR has seen the light and is changing big time (which I expected). This change will lead to significant improvements in D (the kids will not line up regularly in the wrong formations; the kids will not be regularly put in mismatches; the kids will not regularly get confused and blow assignments) AND the team will focus on toughness, discipline and give the kids a reasonable opportunity for success – far fewer… Read more »
Yup, LR failed for the first time in his life in 2023. And, he just did not fail – he failed spectacularly on one of the largest stages in his profession. But, unlike what is reported about Jimbo Fischer (who is reported to have refused to adapt and to change), LR learned and changed. The fan base needs to acknowledge just how remarkable such a shift is (rare for a guy who had as much success as LR has had and produced a 11-1 regular season record and a Heisman his first season at SC) AND to give him the… Read more »
LR’s stature dropped a lot in my eyes. If I found out he was headed to the NFL, or anywhere else, tomorrow, I’d be fine with Jen Cohen’s ability to find another coach to lead USC forward. LR never built anything at OU. Stoops had it all in place for him. LR brought Heisman winner Caleb Williams to us, but otherwise, he didn’t do much else that lasted. Culture change? I haven’t seen it. I still have faith LR will get his act together. He’ll be at USC a while, and we deserve the coach we all thought we were… Read more »
Totally agree. If he left tomorrow, I would not be upset at all. To state that LR’s stature in the profession dropped a lot is like saying the Titanic had a problem with a leak. His reputation crashed, burnt, and sank to the bottom. I doubt he would make the top half of B1G coaches right now. But, like you, I fully expect he will correct this. Did not you notice, there have been ZERO SC “connection” hires on the D staff at critical positions? LR and Jen are clearly going after the best talent they can find. I am… Read more »
I cannot imagine an elite program would now hire LR. Not one. As to the future, we will find out. And I agree LR is a more advanced case of Kiffin and Sark – great potential but is learning on the job. Not the what we thought we were getting, but it is what we have.
We have 19 commits from high school and 4 portal transfers so far. Looks like there is room for some more big guys for the O and D lines. It is nice to see fresh talent at linebacker coming in.
I missed on the LA bowl taking Boise. I figured with the DC gone and Latu not playing they would fall flat. They did the first half but came back great.
Well Matt Entz can go back to Fargo and pack for LA. Lost a wild one to Montana in the FCS semifinal game. Can’t say his defense was that impressive but it was the semifinals.
We already replaced Donte with the DC from Houston. I won’t pretend I know who he is, but he is from Saban tree. That’s three coaches on D staff who were coordinators. Also, Donte is headed to Georgia.
This is a move by Smart to get better receivers at UGA. “Recruiting Genius” Donte has shown he can recruit receivers, but apparently not many of the other positions on a football team (especially OL and DL). Kirby probably knows Donte is a lousy coach of DB’s, but I assume that Kirby Smart is the defacto coach of DBs at UGA as that was the position he played as a bulldog. If Donte reverts to form and sucks as defensive backs coach, Smart will step in.
Updated list of USC players in the Portal, now up to 12 1 DL Jamar Sekona 2 RB Raleek Brown 3 S Xamarion Gordon 4 RB Darwin Barlow 5 TE Jude Wolfe 6 LB Chris Thompson Jr. 7 DL Dejon Benton 8 WR Michael Jackson III 9 CB Fabian Ross 10 OL Andrew Milek 11 WR Mario Williams 12 OL Michael Tarquin
I think Barlow got a raw deal at USC, from an outsider’s point of view. I don’t know why USC’s coaches didn’t get him into more games. Some say he didn’t block well enough, but I saw a lot of USC players who couldn’t block and they still played.
It will be interesting to see how USC develops its run game next season, since whomever we have carrying the mail will need a much better O-line to establish a solid running attack.
I’d say the departures of Tarquin and Milek show LR is serious about upgrading USC’s OL talent.
I have been a Mario Williams “hater” all season and assume this move is a wish to rehabilitate his draft stock. His status has dropped like many passes sent his way. It’s too bad the coaches couldn’t teach football basics. He set up USC’s loss in last year’s bowl game. He almost always gave up ground after a clutch catch. It was as if he thought retreating would allow him to gain ground. It was frustrating to watch. Some of the players on the list I will hate to lose, Mario isn’t one of them.
Malachi Nelson is headed to transfer portal according to 247 sports.
USC hoops getting slaughtered by AUB 67-48 with only 12 mins to go.

Look at UCLA. They showed up as two completely different teams last night. It’s all in the mind! JMHO.
Both LOUIS and USC have the talent to win the Holiday Bowl. Who wants it more? Probably LOUIS without a doubt, which is too bad.
I wish LR could light a big-time fire under the Trojans for this Holiday Bowl. Is that too much to ask after this season?

LR got a quick, scary look at what it’s like to be a coach lining up for a spot on the hot seat charts.
He screwed the pooch big-time in 2023.
So far, it looks like LR got the message. Hopefully, more good changes are in the works to come.
Yup, LR failed for the first time in his life in 2023. And, he just did not fail – he failed spectacularly on one of the largest stages in his profession. I really wonder, who else would want to hire LR now? He’s still got his training wheels on from what I’ve seen.
Maybe it’ll be good for him to have a non-Heisman-type QB to coach. I’d sure like to see us get our running game back.
I cannot imagine an elite program would now hire LR. Not one. As to the future, we will find out. And I agree LR is a more advanced case of Kiffin and Sark – great potential but is learning on the job. Not the what we thought we were getting, but it is what we have.
It’s amazing to think Sark could actually lead the Longhorns to a NC this year. Truth seems stranger than fiction to me in this case.
I never thought I’d see Sark accomplish anything like this after drinking his way off the USC campus.
We have 19 commits from high school and 4 portal transfers so far. Looks like there is room for some more big guys for the O and D lines. It is nice to see fresh talent at linebacker coming in.
Ucla looks like a different team after half-time.
Evidently, what was said in the locker room at half time was inspiring.
Who else besides me is 2 for 2 on their bowl picks?
I missed on the LA bowl taking Boise. I figured with the DC gone and Latu not playing they would fall flat. They did the first half but came back great.
Troy5543, Satyrdancing and Scoochnew.
I am working on having something posted tomorrow that will make it easier for everyone to keep track of wins/losses.
It sure has been a big news day for USC football.
Could be a great weekend before it is done. ✌️
Fingers crossed !
Akili brothers from OR St both commits. ✌️✌️One is all Pac12 LB, one is DB.
That’s a positive, now the coaches has to do their part and improve these young men

I think Donte is finally going somewhere where he will learn something.
Saban is smart as a whip! He is bringing in a recruiting California pipeline more than a DB coach.
Check that Steveg, Kirby Smart is bringing ion a Calif. pipeline.
This is a move by Smart to get better receivers at UGA. “Recruiting Genius” Donte has shown he can recruit receivers, but apparently not many of the other positions on a football team (especially OL and DL). Donte is a wannabe pimp … dude bounces around from school to school
good riddance
Donte Williams out at USC as Trojans continue to make defensive staff changes

Updated list of USC players in the Portal, now up to 12

2 RB Raleek Brown
3 S Xamarion Gordon
4 RB Darwin Barlow
5 TE Jude Wolfe
6 LB Chris Thompson Jr.
7 DL Dejon Benton
8 WR Michael Jackson III
9 CB Fabian Ross
10 OL Andrew Milek
11 WR Mario Williams
12 OL Michael Tarquin
Some good players there, but I really hate seeing Barlow leave. He’s as underrated as they get. Wish him the best.
I think Barlow got a raw deal at USC, from an outsider’s point of view. I don’t know why USC’s coaches didn’t get him into more games. Some say he didn’t block well enough, but I saw a lot of USC players who couldn’t block and they still played.

Agree. Looks like our DB coach resigned.
Good riddance
What was the guy suppose to do runs over UCLA last year … never plays again. Shows up vs Udub runs over them and never seen again
strange
