Adam Grosbard (OC Register) — Andy Enfield’s contract runs through the 2022-23 season. USC AD Mike Bohn said that at this time there have been no discussions of an extension for Enfield.
The season earned Enfield his first Pac-12 coach of the year award, and the first for any USC coach since 1992. The Trojans’ .778 winning percentage is the highest of Enfield’s eight-year tenure at USC.
“Our focus has been on the safety of our players. At the right time, we’ll have an opportunity to think about those things,” USC AD Mike Bohn said. “But I’m very pleased with what Andy and this team and his staff have been able to accomplish. I think that some of the key aspects of our brand of basketball that we play are attractive to recruits, and attractive to fans.”
Generally speaking, Bohn said when considering whether to extend a coach’s contract, he looks at on-court success, recruiting, academic performance, and how the team represents the university.
“I believe that today’s head coaches have high standards to meet,” Bohn said. “That’s no different than what we would expect at USC for all of our head coaches to be able to ensure that we’re running a program that’s competitive, that is creating an incredible experience for our student-athletes, and represents USC with pride and distinction.”
In December 2019, USC received a notice of allegations from the NCAA related to former assistant coach Tony Bland, who was sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery. Bland admitted to accepting a bribe to direct recruits to a specific advisor during their recruitment.
Asked if that investigation would play a role in deciding whether to extend Enfield’s contract, Bohn said, “I think that you have to look at all those aspects. We’ll see how all those different pieces come together, but again, I think what Andy and his staff and these players have done is a special season and I think it’s really important to focus on that.”
Building a vaunted atmosphere at the Galen Center is part of what Bohn wants to accomplish at USC. He understands the high standards for basketball in Los Angeles, and wants to cultivate an enthusiasm on campus for the program that leads to a rowdy student section at games.

You read what is going on with LSU’s decision to not fire Les Miles when the AD recommended firing. The then president, Kingman, who is now presiding at Oregon State said publically he couldn’t fire Miles due to the fact the board decided to retain him before he took over as president there and that the attorneys he spoke to recommended to not fire Miles. How accountable are board of directors? Look at what Max Nikias’ decisions did to USC and he is still on the board and influential? On a side note, OSU held a public hearing and an… Read more »
Definition of the word >>>>>> PHEW !!!!!………..FIGHT ON !!!!!
Just saw this on internet (and IT IS GOOD ! ) >>>>>>”Evan Mobley scored12 of #USC‘s 16 in the OT periods.”
Can we try playing our best in the clutch ?????………PLEASE !!!!!
Here comes that ever so dangerous last minute of the game !!!!!
Just saw this reported on the internet (It is not good) >>>>>>” USC had been so solid at the FT line, making first 11 before finishing game 6 for 12, allowing Utes back in.
– #Utah ties it up on a pair of Ian Martinez free throws with 2.3 seconds to go.”
So make one free throw and no overtime ……..ONE …………….,STINKIN……………..FREE……….THROW !
I’m not confident that my aging heart can take this team. It has become worse than the Cardiac Kids of the 70’s. 😠
Does Mobleys draft stock drop if practically nobody see him much ? ……..( Like we lose tonight and go 1-and-done in the NCAA Tourney ) .
I assume we will be in the NCAA Tourney .
I do not have a good feeling if this game goes to OT .
Time to win a game by shear will SC !
Does sheer will work for free throws?
LOL
OK SC ……Bring this game down the home stretch and put it in the win column ……FIGHT ON !!!!!
This is actually true — Michigan State announces basketball team will now be called ‘MSU Spartans Presented by Rocket Mortgage’

Coach Handy-Andy has been lucky the past 2-years, drawing in ‘Kong’ last year, and Kevin this year– both Top-10 NBA picks. It is difficult for SC to attract top-talent when their games at Galen only draw 25%. However, since ol’ man COVID will highly-likely be around at least into 2022, lack of attendance will not hurt the Trojans next year. But can Enfield strike gold again by bringing in a top-talent?… As SC basketball has proved in the last 100-or-so years, Trojan fans will not show up for basketball unless they are assured of at least an entertaining, competitive team.… Read more »
Think you nailed it here Lawyerjohn when you said >>>>>>> “As SC basketball has proved in the last 100-or-so years, Trojan fans will not show up for basketball unless they are assured of at least an entertaining, competitive team. SC has had 2-and maybe 3-year good “runs” over the decades, but it needs to have a 5-year run before the Trojan faithful will truly believe SC basketball is worth attending…”……..FIGHT ON !
We have halftime lead and (per FOX Sports boxscore) Evan Mobley only has 2 points.
From Fox Sports website game boxscore >>>>>> “USC completed a 17-4 scoring run over 6:56.” USC 30, UTAH 24
Hey SC …….. How about a 5 minute period in this game where we get AND KEEP THE LEAD !
9 PM eastern time( posted 8:30 PM ET start ) and the game is just starting ?????
Final in OT: ORE ST 83, UCLA 79.
Bruins lose. So sad.
In pre-season media polls, Bruins were picked #1, ORE ST #12.
Awwwww……Just breaks my heart (lol) !!!
Damn it Allen — I gave a guy Cal Jr. and 3 points. When will I learn? 😥
All I can do is keep an eye on the score tonight (Guess I will watch to see if my 11 point underdog Knicks can win in Milwaukee tonight ) ….But as always FIGHT ON !!!!!
Wow. Great ORE ST/UCLA game.
With 11 secs to go, Beavers lead 70-69. UCLA has ball. Beavers trailed big much of the game.
The big difference versus Helton is Enfield seems to be building up his program with better recruits and wins even though he isn’t coaching well enough having a top competitive program. And he isn’t requiring his AD to surround him with better coaches. Then again only few can be truly consistent with this one & done rule hanging over all CBB coaches losing their top players.
Reason to temper that enthusiasm?
LAT — Andy Enfield — “We don’t have a single player on the team that’s played in the Pac-12 tournament, and we have just one that’s been in the NCAA tournament. So it’s going to be an exciting couple weeks here.
“Postseason success means a lot for programs, especially programs like USC, which hasn’t had much. We’d certainly like to add to that. But that’s not crossing our minds right now. We’re just happy to have the opportunity we have in front of us.”
I hope Bohn learned from Helton. Helton’s best years were with Sam. Once Sam left, we saw the real Helton. So is the reason Enfield succeeded this year was Enfield or was it the Mobleys? I would want to see how Andy does after they leave before evaluating him. My test is would any other major program want him? Look at Clay, the Kansas job is now open. A new AD will be in place shortly. Do you think the Jayhawks would be interested in Clay? Maybe Bohn should call that AD and offer to waive Clay’s transfer fee?
Can you believe the brutal mess that woeful KU football is in, with the AD himself paying big-time for hiring Les Miles by getting fired too?
No wonder Bohn is hoping Clay will somehow work out so he doesn’t have to hire a HC who doesn’t work out.
Imagine Clay trying to actually rebuild Jayhawk football? Now there’s an interesting SNL skit for you!
Another reminder that Folt tells Bohn we will keep CH because he doesn’t get into any trouble that I, Carol Folt, would be embarrassed by? I’m not in any way trying to be funny, but fearing this is what she will measure her decisions on.
Jamaica, I have a better idea. Bohn calls the Kansas AD and offers to pay KU to take over Clay’s contract! Clay is perfect for KU as he will run a clean program and rehabilitate the KU image. 😂
Great reply RJJ! I might add since AD Jeff Long is now gone also and KU is where Bohn played basketball, could this become a packaged deal?
The KU program was a dumpster fire before Les got there and his actions at LSU have made it more of a hot mess. LSU is also under scrutiny and the actions of Les are not the only problems they have. The BB program & coach are under investigation and sexual harassment claims are still being reviewed. And don’t forget the new (ish) president at Oregon State is the former president at LSU—he is the guy who didn’t fire Miles when the AD recommended it. Oregon State is not happy and the president could find himself out of a job.… Read more »
I think KU football has always been horrible and is typically viewed as a graveyard job (which is why Miles was offered, I presume). But a few pretty significant names come to mind: John Hadl, Gale Sayers, Nolan Cromwell, Glen Mason, John Riggins, Mark Mangino and Pepper Rodgers. Charlie Weis bombed big-time there. Pepper wrote a book called Fourth and Long Gone back in ’86 about his coaching and recruiting experiences which I found fairly entertaining. Weis (who almost died from gastric bypass surgery in 2002) managed to set both ND (35-27, once even had a 3-9 season) and KU… Read more »
RJJ if I remember correctly, when Sam was winning games and had that comeback in the Rose bowl against Penn St., Helton looked as dumbfounded talking with reporters on what to make out of it. I think he learned from that experience he just has to stand around and wait for the team to do something he could brag about. And it has been pretty much that way ever since. Of course luck hs always been nice to Helton. Like when all Penn St. had to do was kill the clock at the end of the Rose Bowl and the… Read more »
