Matt Hayes: While you weren’t looking, USC became a power again
Matt Hayes (Saturday Down South) — Let’s begin with what must be said: 7 months ago, USC was a hell hole.
Coach after coach, recruiting class after recruiting class, and nothing stuck. Nothing took root and developed into the beautifully perfect Eden like it had in the past, amid the most fertile environment in all of college football.
Nothing.
“When you come into a program in the position we did, you really try to peel back the layers on every part of it,” said new USC coach Lincoln Riley. “And try to figure out what’s going on.”
Now look at the metamorphosis in a matter of 200-plus days since Riley accepted the job, without playing a game, without snapping a ball: USC — months after finishing the season by losing by 30 at home to an average UCLA team — was recently named a betting favorite by Las Vegas sharps to reach the College Football Playoff.
Of all the once-elite programs desperate to find their way back — most notably Texas, Miami and Florida State — USC is a country mile ahead in the race.
Not Texas and Steve Sarkisian’s juiced-up offense. Not Miami and Mario Cristobal’s quick refurbish in a conference long on questions for the 2022 season.
But USC — which fired its coach after Week 2 of the 2021 season, and has won 22 games in the last four seasons.
Think about that. A roster devoid of talent at the end of 2021, and lacking realistic scholarship numbers (and realistic Power 5 players), will earn 1 of 4 coveted Playoff spots.
Frankly, it’s ridiculous to even consider.
But dig deeper into the last 7 months, and understand the heavy lifting and reconstruction that took place under the radar of Georgia winning its first national title in 41 years, wild NIL deals, cheating accusations and bickering of high-profile coaches, and a(nother) paradigm shift in the college football landscape.
Amid all that — and while no one was looking or really cared — USC built a potential monster.
— Nov. 28, 2021: USC shocked the college football world by hiring the uber-successful Riley from Oklahoma for an estimated $110 million deal (larger than the Conference USA, MAC and Sun Belt media rights deals).
— Feb. 1, 2022: Oklahoma QB Caleb Williams, the No. 1 player in the transfer portal, signed with USC and joined former star Sooners WR Mario Williams, who followed Riley to USC.
— May 19, 2022: Pittsburgh All-American WR Jordan Addison, the 2021 Biletnikoff Award winner, ended his controversial transfer portal recruitment — Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi publicly claimed USC tampered with Addison — and signed with USC.
Addison’s signing was the last major piece of a group of starters from the transfer portal — and a handful of impact freshmen — who will redefine the USC program.
A defense that was 11th in scoring in the Pac-12 last season (31.8 ppg) picked up starters with S Bryson Shaw (Ohio State), DE Solomon Byrd (Wyoming), MLB Shane Lee (Alabama), LB (Arizona State) and CBs Mekhi Blackmon (Colorado) and Latrell McCutchin (Oklahoma).
More important in the world of “offense wins games,” Riley surrounded Williams with elite tailback Travis Dye (Oregon), another strong tailback in Austin Jones (Stanford), a starting left tackle (Bobby Haskins, Virginia) and a completely revamped receiving corps of Addison, Williams, Terrell Bynum (Washington) and Brenden Rice (Colorado).
Then there’s 5-star safety Domani Jackson and 4-star wideout C.J. Williams — both from famed Mater Dei High in Southern California who were likely headed to Alabama and Notre Dame, respectively — who signed with USC and enrolled early to participate in spring practice. Both will play a significant role this fall.
— July 1, 2022: USC joins the Big Ten, solidifying its future in an ever-changing college football landscape. USC will go from earning $30 million a year from the Pac-12 media rights deal to an estimated $100 million annually from the Big Ten.
The football giant has officially awoken.
When USC is aligned, when its athletic department and university are zeroing in on the same goal, there is no better program in college football. There is no better place to recruit, no better name, image and likeness haven.
Case in point: Caleb Williams. Since signing with USC, Williams has signed 4 major NIL deals, including Beats by Dre, Ac+ion Walter, Fanatics and Hawkins Way Capital, a Beverly Hills real estate private equity fund that manages nearly $2 billion in assets.
So while Texas is the biggest brand in college sports and has the largest budget, and Miami hired a dynamic alum and secured financial support from billionaire booster John Ruiz, and FSU is slowly crawling back to the top of the ACC, USC has rocketed past all 3 in a matter of months.
Riley already proved he could beat the college football elite for recruits, despite the disadvantage of recruiting only 2 weeks for USC before his first early signing day.
He has since beaten Oklahoma with a commitment from 5-star QB Malachi Nelson for the 2023 class and Texas A&M and Ohio State for 5-star WR Zachariah Branch — 2 of the top 5 players in the 247Sports Top 100 rankings. 247Sports predicts USC will land 4 of the top 25 players for 2023, including TE Duce Robinson and edge Matayo Uiagalelei. Riley also has a commitment from LB Tackett Curtis, a Top 50 player.
This is a private university with an elite academic reputation, a $300 million renovation to the legendary Coliseum and a $110 million deal to hire a coach who won 4 Big 12 titles, advanced to 2 Playoffs and produced 2 Heisman Trophies and a Heisman runnerup in 5 seasons at Oklahoma.
Riley went from competing with Texas and Texas A&M and everyone else from the meatgrinder SEC for state of Texas recruits, to recruiting the most fertile 2-county area (Los Angeles, Orange) in the country with the inherent advantage of a name brand.
He used to bring recruits to his swanky home in Norman, Okla., complete with a putting green in his backyard. Now he brings them to his luxurious $17.2 million compound in Ranchos Palos Verdes, with the limitless horizon of the Pacific Ocean as his backyard.
He’s young, he’s hip, he’s in control of the best program in college football. The question isn’t if USC will make it back.
It’s, could it really happen this fall?

USC’s famous # 3 has not been worn since 2002, when Carson Palmer retired it after winning the Heisman. Jordan Addison will be #3 again for USC this season with Palmer’s blessing. “He promised to work his tail off and represent all that it means to be a Trojan, and that he’d be incredibly humbled to wear No. 3,” Palmer said.
That is some great company, the #3 Club. Here’s a question/project for the TDB, “The Top 5 Numbers and Those That Wore Them In USC Football History”. Is #55 Club the top?
So I will repost my question slightly differently. Which USC retired/honored number has the greatest players that wore it?
The answer has to be #55 or #3….
How’s this for a start? Not sure of the order, but I think I’m leaning to #42 as my top USC number. Top 10 #2 — Morley Drury (“The Noblest Trojan of Them All”), Robert Woods, Adoree Jackson, Taylor Mays, Steve Smith, Marshall Duffield (he took me to the stunning Beban Bomb tragedy in ’65, my first USC game in person) #3 — Carson Palmer, Keyshawn Johnson, Curtis Conway #5 — Reggie Bush #16 — Frank Gifford, Rodney Peete, Paul McDonald, Brice Taylor (born without a left hand; a descendant of America Indian Chief Tecumseh) #28 — Anthony Davis, Clarence… Read more »
I think you are right Allen on #42 a safety, running back, wide receiver, and linebacker. Best all around #. #2 is all wide receiver greats (at least in my lifetime) is second.
A focus on amazing DBs sends us to #7 (Dennis Thurman, Mark Carrier, T.J. McDonald). Promising S Calen Bullock will wear #7 this season.
Consider me an old fart but if you’re going to retire numbers then keep them retired. And if the fallout from that is you lose a recruit because he can’t get his fave number, tough. And I don’t care if the guy whose number was retired blesses the move. It’s not his call.
but if you want to keep all the numbers in circulation so you can pass out double numbers to half the team, that’s okay with me.
I am not sure about retired numbers. At some point won’t you run out? The idea of special honored historic numbers that you have to deserve/earn to wear is better than retiring numbers. You are right if you say the number is retired it should stay retired otherwise quit doing it.
We’ll, SC has been playing with numbers for over 100 years and has retired how many numbers, 7? I think it will be a long time before they run out. And if they do, they can go into triple digits.
I think we should stop retiring #s. What’s wrong with seeing a new #32, or a new #12, which would only remind me of OJ and Charles, not diminish them.
Nothing wrong with that at all. Have someone declare all retired numbers are permanently and irrevocably un-retired and no numbers will be retired in the future.
But I think un-retiring numbers on an ad hoc basis just because a recruit always wore #12 in Pop Warner ball does diminish whatever the retirement was supposed to represent.
Well, I don’t think we need start using 3-digit jersey numbers, so we need to get those retired numbers back in circulation….
I can’t remember Billy Miller…. He must have worn #3 right before Carson Palmer took the number.
Billy Miller (’94-98) was a solid performer, both at USC and in the NFL.
A big, athletic 6-4, 220-pounder from Westlake Village Westlake HS (and a Ventura County Sports HOFamer). Miller was a seventh-round pick of the Denver Broncos in ’99. He also played for the Texans, the Browns and the Saints, where he also won a Super Bowl ring.
In the NFL, Miller caught 200 balls for 2,248 yds and 10 TDs.
Career USC stats: 125 rec/1,572 yds/7 TDs.
First post here. Love the discussions.
I’m salivating over the prospect of Cal’s little brother having to use its B1G money to subsidize the athletics in the rest of the UC system. The Gov has to know he can’t push too hard or he kills the Golden Goose. Still, it’ll be fun to follow.
Aside to Trojan RJJ: if you’re coming in for the Class of 72 Reunion, we’re classmates.
SC Gator, Coming to the reunion?
I’m not.
Will another B1G bombshell drop? “The Big Ten remains interested in adding CAL, ORE, STAN and UW to expand its conference to at least 20 teams, sources told CBS Sports this week. With those four schools, the Big Ten would have more than 30% of the current 65 Power Five teams. “While not admitting specific expansion activities with any schools, B1G commissioner, Kevin Warren told CBS Sports the addition of any teams beyond 2024 additions USC and UCLA would come after the current media rights deal is finalized in August. “However, it’s fair to say statements made during Warren’s state-of-the-union address at the… Read more »
Why would the Big Ten want a deadbeat athletic program like CAL and its anarchistic political attitude? What has CAL brought the PAC-12 these past years? Very little!
I’d like to continue playing STAN, but CAL can rot in whatever conference it gets shipped off to as far as I’m concerned.
Research $$. Livermore Labs. That’s what.
But I’m also concerned about the California woke identity politics BS. Here in Middle TN the most out-of-state license plates I see are, in order, IL, CA, NY, NJ.

Wilner is now reporting exactly what I thought was in the works with Newsome’s complaint about the need for Regent approval for UCLA to leave the Pac and join the B10 – money. As Rialto reported, Regent approval was NOT needed at all for the move. But, Cal obviously complained to Gavin about the loss in revenue with UCLA’s move. So, Gavin’s solution will be simple – redistribution. He will take some of the money UCLA is making and redistribute it to Cal. So, UCLA will now lose the revenue it needs to stabilize its athletic department and will instead… Read more »
Heck just make UCLA subsidize all UC sports, Irvine, Santa Barbara, San Diego all the rest as well. Classic leftists, take from the successful and hand it out to the lazy.
GT, You have no idea how close you are to the truth. Newsome said he wanted to redistribute UCLA’s funds not only to Cal, but to all UCs, and he did not stop there. He included the Cal State system. Newsome is a real pro on how to tax success and redistribute to failure.
He’ll make a great President! NOT!!!!!😫
Newson has benefitted California just like Clay Helton’s benefitted USC Football.

USC and UCLA transmute “panache” into quick cash! Scott Dochterman (The Athletic) — “USC and UCLA will come in as full members,” Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren said Tuesday. “We think that’s important for various reasons. They bring a lot of value to our relationship. They bring a lot of panache to our relationship, and we look forward to welcoming them into the Big Ten family here in 2024.” “Nebraska, Maryland and Rutgers all had to wait six years before obtaining a full financial share from Big Ten coffers. The league paid each school what it would have made in its previous conference. Until… Read more »
Wow, Maryland and Rutgers have huge debt going in to 2020! What is their debt now? Must be even worse. No wonder they can’t get any traction in football since joining the BIG.
Who will be the next “It Program” when it comes to recruiting? Ari Wasserman (The Athletic) — “So when you ask what the next ‘it’ program could be, I’m going to go by coaches and early returns. With so many first-year head coaches in positions of prominence, it is a hard proposition. Big Ten commish Kevin Warren stressed adding value to the B1G as the only strategic criteria that would guide his conference expansion plans. But he also revealed his aggressive approach at the B1G media days: Warren — “Where expansion goes, I don’t know. It is important for all of us in business to recognize that we’re in a time of change. There’s two types of people in the world: They look at change as it’s a problem, or they look at change as an opportunity. “And I’m one of those individuals that when change occurs, I get excited about it. Big 12, PAC 12 and then the big boys.
Not that pre -season all conference stuff means much, but there are some guys who got snubbed. I think Bullock should have been on the list along with Gentry.
This was probably the most pro-USC article under LR that I have ever come across. And as you point out, Matt Hayes still couldn’t cover some other good things and additions to Trojan football because of LR.
USC football is like a rocket headed to the moon.
The skeptics don’t want to get too excited until on-the-field results are already in the vault.
But the improvement in USC football has already been so dramatic in such a short time that it’s impossible not to presume significant success is in the cards. The only surprise would be any other outcome.
ESPN reportedly lowballs Pac-12 in new initial Media Deal offer
According to Wildcat Authority’s SR editor and publisher Jason Scheer, the Pac-12 has reportedly received an offer only worth $245 mil on its expiring media deal.
UW and ORE are now reportedly suddenly demanding unequal distribution (around $41 mil each). STAN and CAL want $33 mil, only leaving $16 mil for the rest. These numbers are unverified by me. Just passing info along.
This is peanuts compared to what we’ll get in the Big 10. I hate leaving the Pac-12 and the traditional rivals we face but $100M per year is hard to turn down even with the long travel.
Some of these so-called “traditional rivalries” aren’t really all that tough to lose IMO, especially since USC simply cannot afford to allow CFB to move ahead without it.
For instance, I’d love to see NEB get back to playing well because watching a game in Lincoln is an awesome venue IMO. I’d love the Huskers to become a new USC “rivalry”, replacing the ones which will be discarded.
If true, my guess is Utah, CO, AZ and ASU are going to negotiate real hard with the B12. My guess is they will do better in the B12 than at the bottom of the Pac.
Who knows when the next shoe will drop? It’s gonna be a big one.
If Oregon, UW, Cal and Stanford stand on unequal distribution based on brand value (Oregon has by far the most valuable brand in the P10), I cannot see the Pac as constituted lasting. If you are right, the next shoe will be the 4 corner states leaving the Pac for the B12. The Pac will then replace the six departing teams with SDS, Fresno State, Boise State and probably UNLV. A reconstituted Pac will be worth less in media rights but it will probably be amenable to unequal distributions.
There has been talk about the Big 10 taking Oregon, UW, Cal, and Stanford if they want to really go big. Not sure if this will happen at all.
“The ex-Fox Sports Network president, Bob Thompson, placed Oregon’s media-rights value at $30 million and Stanford’s at $45 million when I pressed him. That may be all that would normally matter to the Big Ten. However, I think Oregon’s national brand and Phil Knight’s clout give the Ducks the edge. If the Big Ten takes Oregon, I would expect there to be some sort of subsidy or waiting period (See: Maryland) before the Ducks are allowed to take a full conference media share.”
Big Ten commish Kevin Warren has been eyeing USC, UCLA since 2019 J. Brady McCollough (LAT) — Kevin Warren said that he has been evaluating expansion options since the day he interviewed for the role of Big Ten commissioner, which he assumed in Sept 2019, taking over from longtime leader Jim Delany. USC and UCLA, he said, were always attractive to him as targets. “We had to be forward thinking about what we need to do,” Warren said. “You look at some of the alumni from USC, the Steven Spielbergs, at UCLA, Jackie Robinson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Stan Smith at USC,… Read more »
Just came across this for the first time. Pretty clever, near the Coliseum…time flies
The Big Ten can’t possibly want a UCLA football program, that can’t even fill 50% of the seats in its home games, that much? And football as we know, drives the bus.

More on OG Micah Banuelos per Todd Milles (SBLive) DES MOINES, Wash. – When it comes to producing running lanes, or pulling off bodies from a football pile – you want Kennedy Catholic’s Micah Banuelos on your side. The four-star recruit chose the Trojans over Oregon in a close race. Equally telling Monday was the site at… Read more »
What jumped out to me is LR’s contract is larger than the Conference USA, MAC and Sun Belt media rights deals! These conferences will never compete with the small budgets they have, all the NILs in the world will not get them talented players. The separation between the haves and have nots will just get wider and wider.
This really jumped out to me. I think it may have also sent shockwaves through the Pac-12, especially for ORE faithful. USC’s new 4-star OG commit Micah Banuelos (known for his fiery intensity) — “USC joining the Big Ten played a big role in my decision. SC is the move. The Big Ten is different. For SC to come out of nowhere to join the Big Ten. It shows they have a lot in store for the program…” SBLive — “Oregon didn’t really have a chance to join the Big Ten according to all of the people I’ve talked to,… Read more »
GT – In addition to lacking funds, those conferences will not be able to keep players they develop. They will attract 3 star talent which can develop into 5 star talent. But, the problem is once a kid develops, he will simply transfer out for a better school and a pay check. Addison is a prime example – Pitt developed him the into an AA WR but once developed, he left for greener pastures. The lesser conferences will simply be the minor league development teams for the big boys, probably the SEC and the B10.
Pat Narduzzi is still totally riled over Jordan Addison’s defection to USC. At the ACC media days, Narduzzi still tried to rake Addison over the coals publicly for winning the Biletnikoff at PITT before heading to LR and LaLa Land.
I always admired how LR never lashed back at the hysterical Narduzzi, or even addressed him in any way from what I saw. No punching down allowed.
Narduzzi is also taking shots at his OC (Whipple) that left Pitt for Nebraska.
The Panthers HC is coming across like a Major League Douche Bag.
Riley was smart to stay above the fray.

I’ve been watching Hayden Fry disciple Kirk Ferentz, who just signed another contract through 2029 ($7 mil per year). He sure picked the perfect job for his level of expertise. Since ’99, he’s 178-112 at IOWA with conference championships in ’02 and ’04. From a west-coasters perspective, Ferentz, 67, is purely mediocre, but maybe IOWA just has a ceiling that no one can push too high. Ferentz beat Helton in the 2019 Holiday Bowl 49-24. That’s how bad things got for USC. USC hired Mike Bohn just the month before that Holiday Bowl. He was the Trojans’ first AD in… Read more »

Allen, Thanks for posting this article. I really like the contrast between what the Cat had done to SC football (and the major media never reported until after he was fired) and what Riley has accomplished in such a short time. Two items I found interesting in the news. First, the Regents (read Newsome) are clearly out to force UCLA to pay Cal for UCLA’s decision to leave the Pac for B10. They now have a committee investigating the “equity” of the move. I have no idea exactly what that means, other than an attempt to take money from UCLA… Read more »
In having to pay ransom to the tree-huggers up north, then the Big Ten needs to reevaluate the ruins coming into their conference? UCLA isn’t the type of administration that backs its football program enough to be a real contender today anyway. If they have to share whatever amount of revenue from the Big Ten TV contract they get then you have to think ruin football isn’t going to up its support that much more than it would remaining in the PAC. I’m not saying they won’t win games, but being just another Minnesota or Nebraska, even another Illinois won’t… Read more »
Jamaica, That would be the perfect move. Tell Newsome that no worries, UCLA will rejoin the Pac and Stanford will leave. Then you can have UCLA and Cal in the same conference, lots of equity but far less money for the athletes. I doubt it will happen, but right now I would say the ability of UCLA to keep the B10 money is no more than 50/50. If Allen is correct that OR and UW are demanding $41 mil of the media rights and Cal and Stanford are demanding $33 mil, I doubt the Pac survives. Utah, CO, AZ and… Read more »
I have been trying to be quietly optimistic of the possibility of running the table this season, but sometimes my enthusiasm just erupts. For instance I was traveling to Boston last week.
