USC’s new $200 million football facility comes with a Lincoln Riley promise
The Trojans coach vows a return on investment to donors: ‘I promise that you’re going to get the same from us’
Luca Evans (OC Register) — LOS ANGELES — In front of another podium, in front of another grouping of some of the most important people on and beyond USC’s campus, Lincoln Riley stood for a public address Thursday morning and flashed back to the first footsteps he’d taken here.
After his flight from Norman, Oklahoma, after the monumental presser that introduced Riley as USC’s next football coach, he walked out to USC’s Howard Jones Field that day in November 2021. He’d taken this job, as he expressed then and has expressed since, for the wealth of resources he saw available at USC in a changing era of collegiate athletics. He’d taken this job, in large part, for the commitment promised to him by an entire university.
And in that moment, the seedlings of his vision in Southern California sprouted to life, seeing a practice facility in need of a gleaming renovation to support a program in need of a gleaming renovation.
“OK, where is this right now?” Riley said Thursday, recounting his thought process that day. “Where do we want to take it?”
Three years later, USC has taken another step in translating Riley’s visualizations to reality, breaking ground Thursday on a new $200 million football facility that’s largely been credited as its head coach’s brainchild. As a crowd of athletic-department personnel, donors and coaches looked on, USC President Carol Folt announced the building would be dubbed the Bloom Football Performance Center, in honor of a $50 million donation from longtime supporter Ronald Bloom.
Smiles abounded, on what a beaming Folt called a “day for bedazzling,” from Riley and athletic director Jen Cohen and donors alike. But an implicit understanding undercut Thursday’s proceedings: $157 million has now been poured into USC’s “Athletics West” capital projects (featuring the performance center as its centerpiece) to, in part, support a football coach with a $10 million-plus salary that has delivered a 4-5 record in his third season helming the program.
And in the final moments of his address to the crowd gathered Thursday, standing atop a mock-turf green tarp laid over layers of dirt, a blue-suited Riley offered a direct assurance to his investors.
“Just like you all got this done for us, and for this program and for this university, I promise that you’re going to get the same from us,” Riley told the crowd.
“So, we thank you,” he continued. “We love being in the fight here, and many great days ahead. Thank you so much. Fight On.”
Updated renderings of the facility, expected to be completed in summer 2026, are nothing short of stunning, fully fitting Riley’s previously expressed vision of the “best college football facility in the country.” The Bloom Football Performance Center will span 160,000 square feet, with two full-length practice fields, and include an expanded locker room and designated space for NFL scouts and a USC-described “recruiting terrace.”
Still, amid a refurbishment that’s necessitated a simultaneous teardown and construction of a new baseball stadium at Dedeaux Field, Cohen made clear to a crowd of donors that the department needed to “keep raising money,” as she said. USC is still $40 million away from its expressed target for Athletics West, and that’s without including an ever-present push for funds to support Riley’s program through third-party NIL collective House of Victory.
Under Cohen’s tenure, a once-messy USC NIL landscape has been handily tidied, with over $12 million available in House of Victory’s 2024-25 budget. But as the dawn of revenue-sharing approaches and collectives at fellow Big Ten programs like Ohio State and Oregon continue to outpace USC, Riley took the opportunity Thursday to continue implicitly calling for more support.
“You’re undertaking something that is so rewarding and so incredible on so many levels, but is so difficult on so many levels as well, that it’s gonna take every single person here to do it,” Riley said. “And it doesn’t – whether you’re talking about building a facility, building a team, building a roster, developing a team – like, any part of this that is not completely invested or that doesn’t want this as bad as someone else will cause this to crumble.”
“It won’t work,” he implored. “It won’t work to the level it should.”
Whether donors continue to trust that Riley’s vision is worth the investment, ultimately, remains to be seen. He sits at 23-13 in three years at USC, now, with one bowl-game win and no College Football Playoff appearances under his belt. But Thursday’s groundbreaking, as Riley affirmed, was tangible proof of the unification of the university toward a common goal. A goal supported, especially, by a deep-pocketed Bloom.
“I’ve seen some ups and downs with USC football,” Bloom told the crowd Thursday, a lifelong USC supporter. “I’ve been privileged to be here with the McKay era, the Robinson era, and the Carroll era.”
“I know that Coach Riley’s era will bring us the same, the same great times,” he said.
Last Saturday afternoon, as Bloom told the crowd in the beginning of his address, he’d tugged on a lucky Trojans sweater and sat to watch USC take on Washington. He came away disappointed, as USC lost 26-21 to the Huskies. The sweater, he cracked, didn’t help.
“But the coach is going to help,” Bloom said, as Riley stood and smiled next to him. “I’m going to continue with the sweater, and he’s going to continue.”
“Fair enough,” Riley grinned, nodding his head. “Fair enough.”

JR was quite a guy and coach with loads of charisma whose players loved him. You couldn’t keep him down. This was a players’ coach. I met him only once when I was scrounging around the USC football offices looking for Trojan info. Somebody took my arm and pulled me into his office where he was working at his desk. They said, “JR, this is Allen Wallace from SuperPrep. You know, we get his recruiting stuff.” I don’t think he knew what SuperPrep was, but he was gracious in his Trojan hat, and we exchanged a few introductory sentences before… Read more »
Earlier today I was going over pictures on the memory page on Facebook and found a picture two years ago of myself standing next to John McKay’s statue. I remarked they might need a couple more, like John Robinson and Pete Carroll. Anyway Robinson even coached at San Marcos high school, which is just down the street from me these days.
Howard Jones. Here he is, ‘severe looking” as usual, in 1927 after taking over the USC job in 1925 from “Gloomy Gus” Henderson, himself a great Trojan coach. USC had tried to hire Knute Rockne away from the Irish. Rockne said no, but he recommended Jones, who had already established himself at YALE and DUKE as an awesome coach. Rockne and Jones were America’s two most famous coaches in the late 20’s and into the 30’s, before Rockne was killed in a plane crash. Give Howard Jones a statue too. He went 121-36-13 leading the Trojans from for 16 years… Read more »

As Signing Day approaches, Colorado remains a major player for USC QB commit Julian Lewis Tom Loy (247Sports.com) — The 247 Sports College Football Show aired on Friday. 247Sports National Analysts Tom Loy and Cooper Petagna teamed up to bring recruiting fans the latest on a variety of top prospects. In the video, the duo discussed Carrollton (Ga.) High Top247 QB Julian Lewis, the No. 115 overall player in the 2025 class. Lewis has been committed to USC since August 22, 2023. However, he’s flirted with schools like Auburn, Colorado, and Indiana throughout the past few months. What’s the latest? “Yeah, that trip [to Indiana] is off,” said Loy. “It was basically up in the air… Read more »
We should remember that the 2025 class will get some money direct from the Universities. How much and to which athletes still seems to be decided. I just saw an article on “the worldwide leader in sports” website talking about how the revenue sharing is going to reduce the churn in the transfer portal in the near future and that this upcoming portal window in December may be the last free-for-all:
Previewing the 2024 college football transfer portal market by Max Olson
I cannot paste the link, unfortunately, and it is behind the ESPN+ paywall. Interesting read. Miller Moss is featured prominently in the title page with his picture….
I also saw that receivers as well as QBs will be a hot commodity in the portal next month. I think this may explain Jakobi Lane’s cryptic twitter comments about if he was going to miss Lincoln Riley. Sounds like he will be testing the portal market.

4 weeks left…………..who is going to make a big move or will they decide to be conservative to hold onto their spot.
Frankly, I would demand a trade. The Bears are where QB’s go to die. Even McMahon, who won a Super Bowl, is living a tough life in pain due to all the hits he received.
Cash is nice but your health is number 1.

Bloom stated….I’am going to continue with the sweater and he is going to continue…….when a billionaire says that……it means what it means. Riley is going to be here for a while. Might as well get used to it.
Does it matter who takes Folt’s position. Probably not.
Finishing with three wins sure would help steady the ship for recruiting purposes.
Well USC didn’t lose yesterday. But they find themselves in sole possession of 16th place in the Big. The good news is they will not end up in last place or next to last even if they lose out! Some shuffling of the play off rankings expected with Georgia and Miami losing, Indiana 10-0 (first time in history). Can Notre Dame keep a top 10 spot not playing nobody? Who is better Boise St or Army? Come on Army beat ND on the 23rd. Army in the playoffs would be great!
Trojan Recruiting Antonio Morales (The Athletic) — LOS ANGELES — USC is simply not having the season it wanted. At 4-5, the best the Trojans can hope for is to match last year’s 8-5 record with three wins to close the regular season and a victory in a bowl game. Not all progress is linear, but USC is stuck in the mud right now. One way to get out of the mess is through recruiting. Better players elevate the talent level and increase the margin for error. As the Trojans are finding out this year, there’s a thin margin between wins and… Read more »
Maybe that’s the way Curt Cignetti is doing it as Mr. Hoosier. I can’t imagine #5 IU has the best NIL on the planet. Obviously they don’t have anything remotely close to that and look where Cignetti already has them in year one.
Even NIL-poor UCLA, once ridiculed for both its coach and sickly program (Chip Kelly literally walked out on them), now looks like an even money bet to beat USC at the Rose Bowl.
Did USC ever actually have Julian Lewis’ commitment in the first place? That’s always been a major question, hasn’t it? It has as far as I’ve been concerned. It seems to me like Lewis has always had one foot in, and one foot out. Always visiting other schools and talking with other programs and coaches, dangling himself out there. If he’s ever actually been truly “committed” to USC, I think he’ll show up — unless this 2024 season has scared him away. Maybe he’s waiting to see how USC looks against NEB, UCLA and ND, just like the rest of… Read more »
Wow. ALA is whipping LSU 35-6 in Baton Rouge with a whole quarter to go.
So much for USC’s big victory over the Tigers. Pure fool’s gold.
Both USC and LSU literally rob (for ridiculous $$$$$) OU and ND of their coaches only to discover they got suckered and wildly overpaid proving the grass is definitely not always greener for either the coaches or the schools.
Great question. It’ll be fun to see what all the talking heads predict.
I think they do. They didn’t play that well today and they still beat MICH, which easily played their best game of the year. Teams that find a way to win when they aren’t at their best have what it takes to win big games.
I wouldn’t predict an outright Hoosier win, but I’m sure pulling for Cignetti to make it 11-0. I’d love to see Cignetti vs Dan Lanning and his ORE Ducks play for the B1G title as undefeated teams.
Reports indicate Michigan is offering Bryce Underwood 10 million to flip from LSU.
If that deal happens Moss is probably not considering Michigan.
10 million for a 17 year old kid that has not played a down in college……things are changing.
Plan B,C,D…….hope Jayden plays great and stays for 2 years.
I wonder if an elite QB would still look at Riley right now……unless USC came up with 10 million. Lewis seems to be looking elsewhere.
Frankly, what does Riley have to offer….come to USC and run for your life……until he lands some top tackles.
Like I said, it might be smarter to recruit 4-star QBs if this top rated QB mania gets out of hand and it just might. You know all the baggage it entails. Entitlement, bad karma in the locker room, high expectations & demands from the handlers and no guarantee the kid won’t bolt if somebody’s nose gets bent. And that’s not to say the talent isn’t there that’s needed on the field in the game. No thank you!
That report has to be bogus. No HS QB who hasn’t stepped one foot on the college football field is worth that. It would first force the coaching staff to give Bryce preferential treatment and cause a very nasty locker room. But go ahead Michigan if you are dumb enough to do it.
No … the Big 10 will see to it that Indy gets 1 loss. Besides they want OSU vs Oregon in BIG final. So the refs can bend over the Quacks at least once this year. Haven’t been able to give them the west coast old man BIG rigged ref treatment because quacks have been drubbing everyone.
BIG will get them in this game. No way is the old boy BIG boys allowing a west coast team to waltz through the big bad BIG, especially with a roster of Cali kids. No chance.
At South Bend? ND’s home advantage is at least 7 points every game and part of that mojo is what comes over “neutral” refs in that stadium–there is much looking of the other way when it comes to the Irish.
Everybody thinks the refs shaft their team when it suits them. It’s part of fans (aka fanatics) and sports, especially football, and to a lesser extent basketball.
It’s amazing what Curt “Google Me” Cignetti has done to instantaneously transform doormat IU. He’s got to be Coach of the Year.
The Hoosiers lead MICH 7-3 heading into the 2nd Q and look like they might just be getting ready to tack on a few more points. Such a physical, buttoned-up team.
Somehow, this is only MICH’s 3rd away game of the season. They lost the first two to UW and ILL.
Last year they lost 16 to the portal. He picked up 8, 7 of which are on defense. Indiana had a good defense under the previous coach also. Cig has done an excellent job so far.
IU went 3-9 last year and two of their wins came against IND ST and AKRON in OT. They stunk to high heaven as always under hapless Tom Allen.
Cignetti (headed to 10-0) came aboard knowing full well how to rebuild teams (“Google Me”), a concept that was/is totally foreign to the generally confused Lincoln Riley.

Thank goodness! Another MIA (home of degenerate Paul Dee) massive comeback win this season would have done me in.
It was a beautiful Ramblin’ Wreck victory, and the player who sealed the win was former USC DE Romello Height, who hustled his way into strip-sacking super dangerous Cam Ward.
My brother got his master’s in EE at GaTech. We saw a few FB games, and some great BB games during his stay there in the mid 80s. The ACC was incredible in hoops then.
So happy to see Miami get exposed. Shut down their QB and they have nothing. Kept a spy who can run on him all day with lots of pressure. Great game plan by GT.

If this held, Ohio St would play Boise St, then BYU, then the semifinal game, likely Oregon (who would have to beat Tennessee or Indiana). One semifinal game could be all Big10 Oregon-Ohio St. and the other all SEC Georgia-Texas or Alabama. Some fun games in all the rounds.
The Big 12 has fined Utah athletic director Mark Harlan $40,000 and will issue a public reprimand in the wake of his disparaging comments about officiating and the Big 12 after Utah’s home loss to BYU. Harlan (below) also was seen visibly berating an official after the game.
This is absolutely brutal and it’s been suggested here on the TDB before. Here’s a closer look at your link. USC Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley is losing more than just football games Justin Churchill (AZ Sports) — The 2024 college football season has not been what anyone expected out of the USC Trojans, one of football’s most historic schools. The day I knew Helton would leave…….excuse my lousy memory……one of our players who was one of the star starters committed an egregious penalty on another player right in front of our sideline, refs and coach…..the penalty extended a drive that was going to be a 4th down.
The other night a similar act occurred….can’t remember much of the detail other to say it was close to the end zone, Wash was driving and the kid practically handed them a TD.
Frustrated players are not a good thing. Riley needs to calm the crew in order to right the ship. I have to believe that Riley expects his quarterback to follow his plays as called, unless the quarterback sees something on the field that would work better. I don’t think Moss was able to analyze the situation as quickly as he should in order to be effective as the coach’s eyes on the field. Moss to often tried making the plays work as called.
Unfortunately I do not see a future for him here. He needs a fresh start and something better than a junior high school offensive line and a coach that understands the concept of running the ball
Sadly, USC just doesn’t take care of the little details it takes to win games under Lincoln Riley. I’ve never seen a USC team that was so consistently incapable of coming up with big plays at crucial times to either stop our opponent, or put the nail in the coffin. LR just seems incapable for some reason of “galvanizing” his team. He’s just not a great motivator. Maybe he was at OU. I don’t know. But L.A. isn’t Norman and the Trojans aren’t the Sooners. Despite having Trojan players who are very tough individually IMO, as a whole, USC lacks… Read more »
I think we have seen this before when a HC wins a Nattie (Phil Fulmer, Coach O, Brown) or moves to get a huge contract(Rich Rod, Fisher and Riley/Kelly) and they flop. Seems they get too laid back and not so hungry in burning the midnight oil. None of these coaches ever came close to even winning their conference championships let alone another nattie. Will Riley buck this trend? If not he will be the biggest bust of them all.
I think LR was a lot more concerned with building a flashy new football facility when he first arrived than he was building a new Trojan team. He immediately bought the biggest house on the block and got the best parking space on campus. But LR quickly found out he was in over his head without a clue about how to “rebuild” a long-reeling major program. Imagine what USC’s record would have been in 2022 without Heisman Caleb? Without Caleb, we were just a Gentleman Clay team with a monstrously more expensive coach. I don’t really know if LR has… Read more »
It is possible we may have a good team in a couple years. These guys coming up are pretty darn good, the 2025 class has a lot of good players in it. We shall see.
Obviously, Lincoln Riley can’t possibly continue to be as bad as he has been. Nobody thinks he’ll fail to finally start improving. Hopefully, he’s learned enough to start earning his paycheck and at least return USC to respectability. Until then, we’ll just hope to make a meaningless bowl where many players opt out.
I know that MM was the emotional leader at the beginning of the season. If he is kicked to the curb (yes he has some of the blame, but certainly not as much as Riley and Josh Henson), how does the locker room respond to that?
I personally thought a couple of weeks ago a change should be made. The team should realize this happens, everyone can get replaced if they are not performing. I like Moss, but for some reason he seems to have gone backward. His line is no help and dropped passes have hurt him all season. Lets see what a more mobile guy can do.
“ it feels like he isn’t putting the team in sinning situations as often as he should be.” I read this twice at the source and once here. Is USC going back to its religious roots? My mom said she was expected to go to chapel once a week.
Perhaps Riley is getting close to losing his offensive side and the QB change will make up for it. It is amazing what a win will cure, for the players and fans. I do think the result of the Neb game will be very important in maintaining the culture. On the other side of the ball the defense has not given up, only in regard to injuries have they fallen off. We are seeing the real Riley, how his young age and experience is showing he needs to mature as a head coach. Somewhere in there I believe is a… Read more »
He needs to rebuild himself as well. Right now he seems to be trying to do too much. He needs to realize he needs a real OC that he respects to run the offense including game plan and play calling. He needs to fire Henson and hire a tough as nails OL coach that has NFL experience like a Eric Henderson. He needs to hire a real Special Teams Coach as well. If he does that and focus on the whole team and game management he will go a long way to improving himself and the team.
The question with LR is always if he is flexible enough to make major changes before too much damage is done. Will he actually do the things you suggest?
Your guess is as good as mine. These next three games will tell the story because if we don’t make a bowl and lose to both major rivals again, LR’s hand will again be forced while recruiting becomes increasingly challenging right in the middle of the first signing period.
USC has Josh Henson as the OC. Then they have Anthony Jones as run game coordinator and Dennis Simmons as the assistant head coach and passing game coordinator. So I wonder, is Riley calling all the plays? Who knows. Sure seems like a lot of coordinators. Then hey have Zach Hanson as the assistant head coach for the offense. I guess titles are a really big deal at USC.
He could call plays and have all of his assistant head coaches work on game management. I don’t know if he has anyone on staff now that can call plays.
Because Helton was a laughable figure, we didn’t expect much and couldn’t believe the school was keeping him around. BUT, we thought we had the homerun hire with Riley. He has proven to be so far below what our expectations were when he arrived and after the first season (prior to the conference championship and bowl game disaster). I think that’s why the bitch factor is so high right now.
Expectations, you hit the nail on the head. LR has accomplished so far below expectations. I can only speak for myself…by year 3 I expected a conference championship and playoff slot. No reason it couldn’t have been achieved with the combination of local talent pipeline and the portal. Yet here we are.
If he were to be asked what, if anything, he would change from the past 3 years, hopefully he would NOT say, “Nothing comes to mind.”
If USC had the money to spend in year one of Riley, they would have gotten some of those guys that went to Oregon. This is like the first year USC is somewhat competitive moneywise.
It’s a pretty interesting day for Nick Saban as part of theGameDaycrew in Death Valley this morning for the #11 ALA at #14 LSU game. Saban won his first national championship when he was coaching LSU back in 2003 before leaving for a failed 2005-06 stint with the Miami Dolphins.
He just told the hyped-up Tiger crowd, “It’s really good to be back with all those great fans and the passion they have. Terry and I loved it here. It was a great experience for us. Winning the first national championship is always the best.”
USC spent all this money hiring this “great” defensive staff and UCLA has a better defense than SC does for a lot less money. UCLA has won 3 in a row while SC has lost 4 out of their last 5 games. UCLA will probably go to a bowl game. I don’t think SC will. SC had better beat Nebraska because I don’t think that they will win the last 2 games.
It’s totally amazing how much UCLA has improved. Shocking. Kudos goes to DeShaun Foster who I mistakenly gave no credit to until paying more attention to them lately. The now 4-5 Bruins get another tune-up for USC when they play the Huskies like USC did in Seattle next weekend. They now have the same record as USC and are in a dogfight with teams like us for a bowl birth. We better be ready for UCLA or they will beat us again. Glad we have finally switched QBs to Jayden Maiava. While we aren’t supposed to expect or demand too… Read more »
Foster has got the Ruins playing. Garbers looks good in spite of the two picks. They have tons of injuries but look seamless.
We’re going to have a game when we play these dudes.
True. USC is gonna have its hands full at the Rose Bowl with the Bruins. They aren’t great. But they are no longer bad either.
Their defense looks better than USC’s IMO at this stage. I never thought I’d be saying that with Lynn as our DC, but too many of our guys are hurt, and who knows how healthy we’ll be vs UCLA.
Let put it this way….If I fumbled the ball I think I might run to the other sideline…..no lineman will give him much shit about why this or why that…..he looks like a guy you do it or else.
I don’t have any specific info on him. But one of the best things he has going for him is that he was an excellent back in both college and the NFL. Recruits respect that. But the thing Bruins like so much about him the most is that he’s a Bruin through and through, and to the core. He’s tough and straight, even if he’s not much of a talker to say the least. Chip Kelly was always too detached and never a Bruin. He always seemed like he resented recruiting. Foster’s in year one and his team has improved… Read more »
Thanks…….it’s just a few games, so not going too far, but it looks like he is going to be trouble for more programs than us in the next few years if he can get some talent.
We had a better than average defense with the players we had at the LSU game. With the players lost since then, (knucklehead portal entries, season ending injuries) we are again average to below average.
Hopefully just the beginning of more pictures of Riley with Lara’s peers showing &building connection and cooperation. This needs to happen up & down the State. If Riley wants to develop this further, he and the coaching staff should offer workshops for HS football programs if it hasn’t already.
The NFL doesn’t exist without college football. College football doesn’t exist without HS football, which doesn’t exist without Pop Warner. Each level needs to support the level that feeds them. The premiere college program in California, such that it is, needs to be out there to help the sport in general if nothing else.
I have literally always loved football as you can see here with my Norwegian grandmother sharing in my joy. I was supporting the game for some reason from the get-go.
I probably ended up choosing USC because of my lifelong love for the premier sport in the world.
Good to see, indeed. Better late than never, but still almost 3 years late.
Seems to me when LR came in, he would immediately ask how USC has been successful in the past. He should have heard early on about the CA talent pipeline and identified it as an ingredient to carry forward.
Were I Lincoln Riley,I’d be very nervous as he approaches the end of year three at USC. He can’t be fired, but he could lose the fans.
Trojan fans are getting sick and tired of the constant excuses, his bad post-game pressers, bad game plans, poor play-calling at crucial times, fourth-quarter collapses, and his overly delayed fix-it decisions across-the-board. We all justifiably expected much better.
Words to the Wise Luca Evans (OC Register) — From an on-field perspective, it’s too much to expect (cannon-armed) Jayden Maiava to be an instant cure for a USC offense that has sputtered at times this season. Lincoln Riley indicated Tuesday his offense wouldn’t change drastically with the more mobile Maiava, and tight end Lake McRee affirmed things during two bye-week practices since the change were “pretty much the same.” But Woody Marks said Wednesday the change didn’t come as a surprise to him. It had been a topic among the fan base, at least, for weeks, wanting USC to… Read more »
This story appeared in the late edition of the E-paper I read this morning. It was accompanied by a few photos and the one that caught my eye was the obligatory first scoop shot. All these dignitaries lined up in their finery, shoulder to shoulder with silver shovels and all I could think was, what’s on Lincoln’s shovel? I’ll bet Traveler contributed some extra grassy fertilizer for Lincoln’s scoop.
Coach Riley, talking when you are emotional can be troublesome for what you may say. You already put your foot in your mouth when you got here declaring how you were going to win and it isn’t happening. Now you say how your program will return the investment made on the new Bloom Sports Center. I just hope you aren’t digging a deeper hole for yourself unless you are making some big changes in areas that are glaringly needed. So far, you keep saying how incredible USC has such benefits already to offer players but it seems your message has… Read more »
Sounds like ole Linkin’ sure had time to make a lot of input into his $200 million club house/fort. But time to develop a recruiting network in the home state of USC? Not so much. Lazy SOB you are, Riley.

Josh Cohen and Saint Thomas help lift USC to narrow win over Idaho State Josh Cohen finishes with 19 points and Saint Thomas (below) makes a critical three-pointer in the closing seconds as USC defeats Idaho State 75-69.
A narrow win again for USC over what I would think is weaker opponent like the first one. The next one is Texas Arlington, and I don’t know if that team is very strong. Although wins will help build the confidence of this team, not playing a tougher schedule to start may backfire once conference play gets underway. The BIG has always had strong basketball teams that compete nationally. When SC announced it was leaving the PAC-12 for the BIG, the first sport I thought of was of course football but quickly had reservations about competing in basketball. USC has… Read more »
Normally I would agree with scheduling tough teams early so a coach can see what he has. But given the top to bottom remake of the entire team, I think a few easier games make sense this year to sort things out.
i believe they beat Gonzaga in an exhibition game on a neutral court and their top scorer is currently out due to an injury. Games like this will help them to grow mentally ✌️
Oregon’s football 145,000 sq.ft football facility cost $68 million. Dan Lanning makes $8.2 million. Oregon’s NIL is $23 million. So USC is paying $132 million more for its football facility and $2 million more for a coach and $10 million less in NIL. Who’s getting the ROI!
“I was there, with my colleague, Dr. Carl Smith, a fellow orthopedic surgeon. The groundbreaking ceremony was exciting, and it was great to hear of the huge donation by Mr. Bloom. The lunch at Heritage Hall was spectacular. Fight On!”
This is not a political post and shouldn’t be read to mean I preferred any outcome. I was just glad it was all over, to be honest. But the new Chief-of-Staff of the President-Elect is Susie Wiles, the first woman to ever hold the position. But what turned out to be amazing about that to me has nothing to do with gender politics. Yes, it’s football-related. She happens to be the daughter of the masterful Pat Summerall, whom I consider to be the best play-by-play guy in the history of the NFL, even better than Al Michaels, who is also… Read more »
Report Links USC Quarterback Miller Moss to Transfer Portal, Michigan Wolverines The benched USC star has been linked to a fellow Big Ten football team. Nick Meyer (Athlon Sports) — Coach Lincoln Riley’s USC Trojans benched star quarterback Miller Moss for transfer Jayden Maiava this week, a surprising development considering Moss’ immense skill set. Miller threw for 293 yds and two TDs (along with three picks) in a 26-21 road loss to UW this past weekend, leading to his benching. According to a source familiar with the situation, Moss’ days with the Trojans may be numbered. “USC Quarterback Miller Moss is entering… Read more »
Moss according to many is a very intelligent person. So…..if he gets benched what will change later in the year or next year to improve his chance to start. Nothing. The OL next year might be weaker than this year viewed as pass blockers.. Same head coach. So, next question…..does he have the talent necessary to make an NFL roster. Doubtful….but…..he could make enough from NIL to start out life with a nice cushion…..and if lightening strikes and he gets drafted in the later rounds….so much the better. Third question…..where ever he goes has to have a line that can… Read more »
I find it hard to believe, but Athlon’s not exactly a newbie to the CFB biz. But the shock of being suddenly benched may have just sent Miller and his out-front, possibly angry mom off the deep end. They’re only human. If in the back of his mind, Miller wants a shot at the NFL (it seems like they all do), he might be better off at a school with a better OL and what he perceives as a huge need at QB with some more NIL goodies. He might be saying, “I’ve been loyal enough.” I can’t believe he’s… Read more »
Too bad, Riley screwed over a true Trojan with his poor recruiting, game management and play calling.
I will miss MM and I wish him well. I hope he comes back to haunt Riley.
I guess I really dislike Lincoln Riley. Certainly as much as I disliked Clay Helton. But not as bad as I hate Paul Dee—I will piss on his grave some day. 🤬
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 What a joke!!!!
John Robinson!
RIP. Dead at 89. Complications from pneumonia. Great coach and Trojan. John Robinson led USC to a 1978 national title and eight bowl games, winning seven. All-Americans who played for Robinson at USC: OLs Marvin Powell, Pat Howell, Brad Budde, Anthony Munoz, Bruce Matthews and Tony Boselli; LBs Clay Matthews Jr., Chip Banks and Chris Claiborne; DBs Ronnie Lott and Dennis Thurman; and WR Keyshawn Johnson. You know, we get his recruiting stuff.” I don’t think he knew what SuperPrep was, but he was gracious in his Trojan hat, and we exchanged a few introductory sentences before… Read more »
Wasn’t he a roommate of John Maddenat sometime in their youth?
Earlier today I was going over pictures on the memory page on Facebook and found a picture two years ago of myself standing next to John McKay’s statue. I remarked they might need a couple more, like John Robinson and Pete Carroll. Anyway Robinson even coached at San Marcos high school, which is just down the street from me these days.
JM, JR and PC, the Big Three. Give ’em all a statue.
The question becomes, where do we put Robinson and Carroll? They don’t have their own buildings.
Move McKay to the Coliseum and erect the other two there? I thought about it when I wrote it, there is room for other statues before McKay, but who?

I can’t get Paul Dee out of my mind today. I’m so happy MIA lost to GT yesterday, 28-23.
Here’s Paul smiling down on his beloved ‘Canes from up above —
Boss Hog……..
He deserved to be in the movie Deliverance. “Who dat pickin’ banjo?”
Or maybe another guard with a dog in Cool Hand Luke?
But Jabba the Hutt takes the cake for me.
Fat tub of goo.
He looks like that troll king in the Lord of the Rings series.
It’s more likely that he is frowning up from down below.
Poor Caleb Williams was sacked nine (yes, that’s right) times today as the woeful Bears lost to the woeful Patriots 19-3.
He completed just 53% of his passes and the Bears have not scored a TD in two weeks, the NFL’s longest drought.
I wonder if Caleb is still happy he went #1, but landed with the deadbeat Bears who can’t protect their QB?
Happier Times
Frankly, I would demand a trade. The Bears are where QB’s go to die. Even McMahon, who won a Super Bowl, is living a tough life in pain due to all the hits he received.
Cash is nice but your health is number 1.
Could more asst coach departures be in USC’s post-season future? Florida State makes multiple staff changes during disastrous campaign Tyler Nettuno (College Sports Wire) — After a stunning 1-9 start to a season that began with a top-10 ranking, Florida State coach Mike Norvell — who is expected to stick around in 2025 — is making some wide-reaching staff changes. When will the pollsters get over Penn St? They should be at 11-12.
As the Trojans are finding out this year, there’s a thin margin between wins and… Read more »
Concerns that we will lose our QB commitment.
No concern here. We don’t need paycheck players. We need players who want to play for the school, coach, and then the NIL. ✌️
Maybe he’s waiting to see how USC looks against NEB, UCLA and ND, just like the rest of… Read more »
Why would Lewis spend his time running for his life behind our O-line who think they are matadors.
I can give you 25.5 million reasons why if he’s any good at the College level. ✌️
OU is now 5-5 after losing to MO 30-23. A miraculous, crazy comeback by the Tigers won’t help Brent Venables one iota.
Ugly, must-see college football at its finest.
OU still has ALA and LSU on its schedule.
Crazy final 2 minutes … MIZZU was toast
LSU was a tough opener. Cannot doubt that.
Does Indiana have a chance against Oh St next week?
That’s undoubtedly bad for USC and Julian Lewis if true, especially since IU wants him too. What’s USC’s Plan B?
Husan Longstreet from Corona Centennial seems very solid with A&M.
There is something definitely wrong with all of this. Education be damned.
That report has to be bogus. No HS QB who hasn’t stepped one foot on the college football field is worth that. It would first force the coaching staff to give Bryce preferential treatment and cause a very nasty locker room. But go ahead Michigan if you are dumb enough to do it.
The question becomes, is the Miller Moss Portal report bogus?
I sure hope MM stays at USC. I’m selfish I guess!
No chance.
Why do you like college football so much if it’s a rigged sport? 😉 😉
Well, I for one have referee Tourette’s Syndrome. When I see a zebra make a call against my team, I can’t control what comes out of my mouth. 😡😎
If you talk with Notre Dame fans, they think USC gets all the calls.
That pretty much says it all.
At South Bend? ND’s home advantage is at least 7 points every game and part of that mojo is what comes over “neutral” refs in that stadium–there is much looking of the other way when it comes to the Irish.
That’s definitely not how they look at it.
Everybody thinks the refs shaft their team when it suits them. It’s part of fans (aka fanatics) and sports, especially football, and to a lesser extent basketball.
With the 1st Q down to two mins, ALA leads LSU 14-3 in Death Valley, the most difficult place to play I’ve ever been.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Tigers can come back in the rain. I don’t have any dog in this hunt.
The refs just gifted the Tide a TD when instant replay clearly showed the Tide runner’s arm and elbow was down before he scored.
Lane Kiffin and the Land Sharks are for real. OLE MISS’ highest-ranked at-home win EVER.
Looks like Kiffin has them.
Great for Lane Kiffin. I’m really happy for him.
Wow. Lane Kiffin, Jaxson Dart and OLE MISS lead GA 22-10 with 1:57 to go in the 3rd Q. GA just starting on its own 9-yd line.

In case you were wondering:

The second window opens in the spring and lasts for 10 days.
Ole Miss giving Georgia a game so far. Can’t wait for the Army/Navy game this year.
That happens when you have no offense. Allen is so defensive oriented he is like the opposite of last years Riley.
How did Cigaretti get so many good players to go to James Madison ! was easy to get them to Indy though

Tech Wins!
I was listening to the game, so I didn’t realize Height made that play. I thought MIA was overrated this season.
They are but they are all the ACC really has. Or had.
My brother got his master’s in EE at GaTech. We saw a few FB games, and some great BB games during his stay there in the mid 80s. The ACC was incredible in hoops then.
They can’t lose too many times in my book.
So happy to see Miami get exposed. Shut down their QB and they have nothing. Kept a spy who can run on him all day with lots of pressure. Great game plan by GT.
5-4 GT leads #4 MIA 14-10 at half. Go Ramblin’ Wreck!

Referees totally hosed Utah against BYU. Looks like thier refs help the playoff teams too.
Pete Thamel (ESPN) Sources:
The Big 12 has fined Utah athletic director Mark Harlan $40,000 and will issue a public reprimand in the wake of his disparaging comments about officiating and the Big 12 after Utah’s home loss to BYU. Harlan (below) also was seen visibly berating an official after the game.
Quacks vs OSU 3x this year lol … hilarious if Quacks sweep them. Old Big 10 boys would freak.

https://atozsports.com/college-football/usc-trojans-head-coach-lincoln-riley-losing-locker-room/
They came into this season with a huge win over LSU, which set the stage for what was going to be a very successful season. Or not. The Trojans have since fallen off, and are playing so badly that… Read more »
The day I knew Helton would leave…….excuse my lousy memory……one of our players who was one of the star starters committed an egregious penalty on another player right in front of our sideline, refs and coach…..the penalty extended a drive that was going to be a 4th down.
Moss has developed PTS thanks to a lousy line and poor play calls from Riley at critical times.
Do you think MM will actually Portal Out from the Trojans?
Yes.
He has been humiliated by Riley as the scapegoat when Riley should be pointing the finger at himself.
Why should he play for that guy again?
Unfortunately I do not see a future for him here. He needs a fresh start and something better than a junior high school offensive line and a coach that understands the concept of running the ball
Couldn’t agree more. The more Moss was hit he consistently became more tentative.
Anything’s “possible” in life.
I’ll bet Woody plays. He is a great young man. What gets me is the best tackle on the team is playing center.
I can’t see us keeping the best players from that golden 2025 class.
Kid actually got caught retaliating but yes, poor move. And another shit call by our BIG friends … I think it was # 22 one of the reserve cbs.
“ it feels like he isn’t putting the team in sinning situations as often as he should be.” I read this twice at the source and once here. Is USC going back to its religious roots? My mom said she was expected to go to chapel once a week.
Well, it certainly wouldn’t hurt at this point.🙄
Easier to pay with titles than cash?
He will only relinquish play calling if he is given an ultimatum by Jen Cohen.
You are probably right. Maybe he will read this blog and learn something.
Too bad he still needs our fantastic AD to tell him what to do.
So soon we forget how miserable we were.
It’s amazing how these things become immediately ingrained in Americana, especially in our social media, two-seconds-of-fame world.
I expect to see bumper stickers, hats, door mats, coffee mugs, trademark applications …
😁 I couldn’t resist.
If USC had the money to spend in year one of Riley, they would have gotten some of those guys that went to Oregon. This is like the first year USC is somewhat competitive moneywise.
It’s a pretty interesting day for Nick Saban as part of the GameDay crew in Death Valley this morning for the #11 ALA at #14 LSU game.
While we aren’t supposed to expect or demand too… Read more »
Probably should have made this switch to Maiava earlier. LR is quite often a day late and a dollar short.
Riley will never be a dollar short due to his unearned salary.
Foster has got the Ruins playing. Garbers looks good in spite of the two picks. They have tons of injuries but look seamless.
We’re going to have a game when we play these dudes.
ucla has the ball at the two and throws for the TD. Thankfully it wasn’t USC doing that, people would get upset. Run, run, run.
LOL….true……when the fans get on you there is no reason.
Is Foster a good recruiter? Any info?
He is one scarey dude when he is pissed off.
UCLA has a good field goal kicker. He just hit a 57-yarder.
6-3 IOWA (-6.5) leads 3-5 UCLA at the Rose Bowl 10-3 with 11:41 to go before half. Ethan Garber has thrown two picks.
Update: It’s 10-10 with 3:27 left in the half. Garbers just fumbled into the EZ for a touchback.
Good to see — Lincoln Riley with Mater Dei HC Raul Lara this morning
Hopefully just the beginning of more pictures of Riley with Lara’s peers showing &building connection and cooperation. This needs to happen up & down the State. If Riley wants to develop this further, he and the coaching staff should offer workshops for HS football programs if it hasn’t already.
The NFL doesn’t exist without college football. College football doesn’t exist without HS football, which doesn’t exist without Pop Warner. Each level needs to support the level that feeds them. The premiere college program in California, such that it is, needs to be out there to help the sport in general if nothing else.
Sorry, but I couldn’t resist GT.
I have literally always loved football as you can see here with my Norwegian grandmother sharing in my joy. I was supporting the game for some reason from the get-go.
I probably ended up choosing USC because of my lifelong love for the premier sport in the world.
😂
Too little too late
Good to see, indeed. Better late than never, but still almost 3 years late.
Seems to me when LR came in, he would immediately ask how USC has been successful in the past. He should have heard early on about the CA talent pipeline and identified it as an ingredient to carry forward.
But I guess not…
Good. Hopefully he’ll try to correct at least one issue.
At this stage, Lincoln Riley has nowhere to go but up. I think?! 😅 😅
Well…..at least he is trying. I suppose there are folks that would just take the 70 million and sit.
Were I Lincoln Riley, I’d be very nervous as he approaches the end of year three at USC.
As long as old man Bloom likes him…..well…..you know……it’s not a democracy.
Ronald H. Bloom is 91 years old. He still knows how to party.
Thanks…..looks like there still is plenty of steam in the boiler…..who said life has to slow after 75.
It had been a topic among the fan base, at least, for weeks, wanting USC to… Read more »
Carol Folt announced she is retiring at the end of the academic year in July 2025.
The election results were too much for her. She is triggered.
1/3 of the nation is triggered. They gonna “fight back”.
She got a gig as a stunt double for Carrol Burnet. (Or elsewhere they’re saying Minnie Mouse in Anaheim)
😂
This story appeared in the late edition of the E-paper I read this morning. It was accompanied by a few photos and the one that caught my eye was the obligatory first scoop shot. All these dignitaries lined up in their finery, shoulder to shoulder with silver shovels and all I could think was, what’s on Lincoln’s shovel? I’ll bet Traveler contributed some extra grassy fertilizer for Lincoln’s scoop.
Hahahaha
Wonder if he had a secret underground parking just for him, never would have to get out of car on campus.
would not be surprised!
“Digging a deeper hole for yourself”
Great metaphor Jam! Even Trojan donor-supreme Mr. Bloom would chuckle over that one as gound breaks on his fantastic new building at USC.
My response to LR…

Josh Cohen and Saint Thomas help lift USC to narrow win over Idaho State
Josh Cohen finishes with 19 points and Saint Thomas (below) makes a critical three-pointer in the closing seconds as USC defeats Idaho State 75-69.
USC will host Texas Arlington on Wednesday.
latimes.com
Gosh, the way they played Gonzaga in an exhibition game a week or so ago you would think the team would romp
over these next opponents?
Oregon’s football 145,000 sq.ft football facility cost $68 million. Dan Lanning makes $8.2 million. Oregon’s NIL is $23 million. So USC is paying $132 million more for its football facility and $2 million more for a coach and $10 million less in NIL. Who’s getting the ROI!
USC football is a boat. A hole in the water you pour money into!
From a fellow Trojan:
She happens to be the daughter of the masterful Pat Summerall, whom I consider to be the best play-by-play guy in the history of the NFL, even better than Al Michaels, who is also… Read more »
Thanks…..did not know she was a Summerall.
I have heard rave reviews about her. Did not know she was related to Pat Summerall
Wonder if she can do play by play for the flag football games on the White House lawn.
Play by play for the round of golf that Trump and Biden sparred over during their debate.
“USC Quarterback Miller Moss is entering… Read more »
If true, that sure didn’t take long.
His is #2 I will pee on. Hanoi Jane is my first.
