Went to my dentist today. He’s a big USC fan. When he was finished with me, we started talking about USC football as we often do. Caleb Williams and USC’s newest additions were our best topics, causing us to laugh, and crack up even. I couldn’t help but think deep down as I walked away — that we USC fans are moving into a glorious period of USC football. There’s so much hope after all the drawn-out years haunted by the Reggie Bush saga. It’s gonna be incredible. And it seems to be more and more on the tips of… Read more »
It is glorious to look at the respect USC with Coach Riley is finally getting again. All these really good athletes are coming here to play one or maybe two years to make an impression on pro scouts and the NFL draft. Riley has a challenge though, maybe more so than last season just in keeping the locker room happy & contented with all these strangers (in theory) to not only immediately mesh but them expecting to get the playing time over the others. The portal can be an effective weapon alright, but signing HS athletes and having the time… Read more »
Think about it Allen. Due to absolute incompetence by USC administrators, etc, we had horrible leadership under the Cat for years. Yet ucla couldn’t capitalize, and now, Kelly has to match wits with Lincoln Riley. They let a once in a lifetime opportunity slip through their fingers. It’s too late for them to do anything about it now.
PN4SC, Right on the money; UCLA had almost a decade to bury SC football and totally failed. The only Pac team to take advantage of the grease fire that was SC athletics under Haden and Swann was Oregon. And, unless the Pac can get its organization together, that advantage is about to fade away.
Choc Chip Kelly has been about as big of a disappointment as we could have ever counted upon at UCLA.
He’s a weird, curmudgeonly coach who was long ago a great innovator, but now seems more like a lazy offensive mind who understands UCLA will continue to pay him to be mediocre. It’s a Bruin Thing, no?
Well, I posted below about the bust of a DL transfer from TCU whose name I could not recall. Well, I just found out his name – Earl Barquet and he just entered the transfer portal. Frees up another spot on the roster.
Steve, I expect several more Helton era DL will also be leaving (or playing only on the scout teams). There are I think three or four kids who will never see the field.
Totally different types of players, each invaluable on both sides of the ball if you want to succeed. I think I learned that from John McKay, The Wild Bunch, and guys like Ron Yary, Roy Foster, Brad Budde, Anthony Munoz, Keith Van Horne, Pat Howell, Don Mosebar, and John Vella.
VT, my son’s a Chem E major at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute! He is finishing up his junior year and then working this summer for a polymer manufacturing outfit there. I didn’t know that was your thing!
Awesome Rock, hope he does well. Rose Hullman is a dynamite school. I have several engineers in the family, self, father, brother, and a recent Chem E grad nephew who is into renewable energy.
That is great VT! We have been a traditional lawyer family, but my grandfather was a mechanical engineer and my brother and law works as an engineer for the federal govt. Good luck to your Chem E nephew — he has certainly picked a hot field!
Riley has turned USC upside down the man is magical, offense gonna destroy everyone we play, defense is shaping up to ensure our wins, What a Great time to be a USC Follower FIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is great news. Use the portal. Use every mode. Maximize all ways to generate a team. Use recruiting. Use the portal. Use the stars on team to talk up the team.
Fight on.
August and September can’t get here soon enough.
hey all,
do you think this will be the LR recruiting strategy long term or do you think he will take fewer and fewer transfers each year as the roster gets deeper through traditional recruiting? I like the idea of saving scholarship slots for a handful of guys each year.
Portal guys seem more predictable having seen them playing at college football sizes and speeds. Sometimes HS talent doesn’t translate to CFB Division I….
If you rely on Portal transfers too much, like Choc Chip Kelly does, you ignore the opportunity to get the first crack at those 4/5 stars you can develop a foundation with for 3-4 years. Great for culture.
Sometimes, Portal guys don’t translate either and turn out to be mediocre space fillers, as USC has already found out despite LR’s amazing success in both the Portal and prep arenas.
Allen, Agreed. Look at the two TCU transfers (Barlow, a decent RB who I doubt will see the field this year, and a DL whose name I cannot recall) and Solomon Byrd (the OLB who transferred over from WY), who I suspect will not see the field much as both Sam Greene and Muhammed have beat him out. Team could use one more OT and two more DEs to round out the roster. The kid from Houston would be ideal as he can play OT, but my guess is that he goes to CO, where he is guaranteed to start.… Read more »
Chris, SC is playing for a NC this year as it has the best O player in the nation at the most critical position. LR has landed a veritable treasure trove of talent for this team. This is one of the best WR groups, OL groups, and RB groups I can recall. Both Bear and Lucas are potential high NFL DL recruits – I cannot recall the last time SC has had two of them on the same roster. Last DL of this quality we had was Leonard Wood. We now have two of them at his level. In two… Read more »

One of the most amazing stats of all-time
UCLA is only 2-7 v Clay Helton and Paul Hackett
RBI – Random But Interesting! The 2 worst coaches in USC history had the Ruins #.
It’s just so literally hard for me to believe.
Another notable thing about these two, the 2 worst coaches in USC history were followed by the 2 best coaches in USC history!
I’m thinking McKay > Riley so far.

To me he was the likely one to be leaving. His contributions were minimal, having never recorded a tackle for USC.

And he’s a Chem E major! I already like this guy, and I just heard his name for the first time within the past 30 minutes!
Nice touch, eh… ✌
OL are traditionally the smartest guys on the team. DL not so much?

LR’s making the transition to winning LOI Days with the best preps, but he’ll always use the Portal to his advantage whenever he feels like it.
