Lake McRee’s connection with Miller Moss fueling USC’s new-look offense
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — When Lake McRee felt a pop in his right knee during bowl practice last December, the USC tight end didn’t think much of it at first. He finished the play, then lined up for another. Even ran a route. McRee may have kept going still, if a coach had not pulled him aside and told him something looked strange in his stride.
The diagnosis, McRee said, was “devastating.” A torn anterior cruciate ligament, his second in just over four years.
The timing was especially cruel. Not only would he miss the Holiday Bowl, which was shaping up to be a breakout moment. Considering when the tear occurred, it wasn’t clear, at the time, if McRee would be back for the start of USC’s 2024 campaign.
Beyond that, it was a major blow to the trajectory of the Trojans’ tight end room. Any hope that the position would suddenly play a major role in USC’s offense this season seemed to be put to rest with the injury.
But eight months later, McRee was miraculously back to full speed. And two games into this season, his fourth at USC, no pass catcher has had a bigger impact on the Trojans’ offense than the redshirt junior tight end, who leads the team in both receptions (nine) and receiving yards (137) and ranks eighth in the nation in both categories among tight ends.
“Having Lake back fully healthy has been awesome,” quarterback Miller Moss said. “I have a lot of faith and trust in him, and I think he’s delivered in a way that I expected and the offense expected him to.”
The expectation, since Lincoln Riley arrived at USC, had been that tight ends would eventually occupy a bigger role in the Trojans offense, like they had in Oklahoma. But that potential had yet to come to fruition at the position. Tight ends accounted for 3% of USC’s passing offense in 2022, then just 5% in 2023, as Caleb Williams relied far more on buying time and hitting his speedy receivers down the field.
That identity appears to be shifting significantly with Moss at quarterback. Moss has gotten rid of the ball a full second faster on average than Williams, while more frequently working the middle of the field on short and intermediate routes, where a sure-handed, big-bodied pass catcher can especially come in handy.
The redshirt quarterback has already targeted tight ends 15 times through two games, nearly halfway to the total targets tight ends saw last season.
Knowing Moss as well as he does, McRee expected that might be the case this season. The thought was in the back of his head as he went through rehabilitation treatment multiple times per day during the spring and summer, pushing his way through a recovery process that he said could be “demoralizing.”
“If I got back in time for the season, I knew me and Miller had a good connection,” McRee said. “He likes a lot of tight end stuff in the offense.”
Moss, who considers McRee a close friend, smiled at the suggestion. “I don’t know who told Lake that,” he joked.
But against Utah State, those preferences proved to be a critical part of Riley’s game plan, as USC worked far more with 12 personnel, which uses two tight ends, than usual. As a result, McRee played 10 more snaps than any other position player on USC’s offense, while young tight ends Kade Eldridge (34) and Walker Lyons (18) did their part and saw three targets each.
Others, like talented freshmen Joey Olsen or Walter Matthews, could work their way into the tight end rotation before the season is done.
“It’s a deeper room, probably a more talented room than we’ve had in the first couple years,” Riley said.
That’s a testament to McRee, who returned from serious injury to step into his biggest role yet at USC.
“It really speaks to who he is as a person and a player,” Moss said. “He’s a tough … kid — and a really good player.”

Colin Cowherd says he’s noticed this “red flag” about Caleb Williams based on what he’s seen and heard so far this season — lack of accuracy. 77 total snaps vs no starters in the pre-season. So far, he’s completed only 24 of 49 throws for no TDS and a horrible passer rating of 69.3. Williams’ passes have been on the ground a lot — in Bears practices. Cowherd described Williams’s practice performances as “pretty rough” based on what he’s hearing from NFL sources. Cowherd predicts that the offensively punchless Bears (who just lucked out in beating TENN) will go on… Read more »
So the generational college QB, number one draft pick to a team that went 7-10 last season is a bust after throwing 29 passes. Gee maybe the speed and timing in the NFL is a little different than the Pac12. Oh and Williams became the first QB drafted No. 1 overall to win his first career start since David Carr in 2002.
Nobody’s saying Caleb’s a “bust” at all. Hardly. That’s not at all what a “red flag” is. A red flag is just a worrisome, concerning trait or signal here that coaching observers have noticed that could become a real problem for Caleb if it continues. This much was obvious to anyone who saw Caleb flunk his opening game performance with the Bears, who won despite him. They won but Caleb was horrible, couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn, and scrambled himself into negative oblivion. To already call Caleb a “bust” is ridiculous and laughable. But to ignore his early… Read more »
You are right a red flag is far from a bust, that was too harsh. Lack of accuracy in a rookie NFL QB with his first 29 passes in his first game shouldn’t be a surprise. Caleb and his receivers have to get their timing down and Caleb has to get used to the increased speed of the pro game. Somebody once said it takes a rookie QB a certain number of passes in a game to get up to speed. I forget the number, maybe 100?
Hey, we’re all rooting for Caleb. I sure am. Hope he becomes the greatest QB in Bear history, which wouldn’t be saying much because of their laughable QB history. But this concern about Caleb’s accuracy didn’t just start in the NFL. It’s actually been hanging around for quite a while. If I’m not mistaken, Caleb completed less than 50% of his throws in three USC games last season. That was a definite concern to some NFL evaluators, including Bill Belichick, who said he wouldn’t draft Caleb if he could because he wasn’t accurate enough for his taste. Maybe Belichick’s opinion… Read more »
I’am known for not following the company line. Been a Bear fan for a long long time. Grew up outside Chicago. Watched every game for decades. I did not want Caleb for the Bears…..hope he works out. I considered him inaccurate and a bit hard to manage. What they did getting rid of Fields was criminal…..but that is the Bears. A long time ago the Bears picked a dude from UCLA….12th pick in the first round…..he had all kinds of college records for passing…..he was going to make the Bears great……this was just before a coach came in that knew… Read more »
Well said. CW’s negatives in 10 words: “I considered him inaccurate and a bit hard to manage.”
I bet LR would say the exact same thing in private.

D’Anton Lynn’s head coaching aspirations; NFL vs college
I never understood all the negativity about LR this past summer. I have always thought him an elite coach, by that I mean that he is extraordinarily talented, yet humble. By humble, I mean that he learns from his mistakes. He showed me that he had learned by his hiring of his present staff. I did not know how quickly the team would turn around, but with LR running the O, I figured it would not take that long. I thought the D staff he brought on was outstanding, but I did not realize just how good they were. I… Read more »
What an early season game rushing attack, even if it was against a cupcake.
USC ran for 249 yds vs UTAH ST behind RBs Woody Marks (103), Quinten Joyner (84), Bryan Jackson (34) and A’Marion Peterson (18).
The last time USC rushed for that many yds was way back in 2018 when the 5-7 Trojans ran for 332 yds vs 1-8 ORE ST in Corvallis, winning 38-21.
The Trojan runners that year were Aca’Cedric Ware (825 total yds), Vavae Malepeai (501) and Stephen Carr (384).
2018 was such a forgettable season. Still wish we had fired Helton after it instead of waiting till 2021 to do that.
Agree. Holding on to Helton for far too long was one of the worst decisions made by USC football ever. He was a very nice guy. Truly pitiful as a coach, but very nice. Didn’t we used to call him Gentleman Clay? I seem to have quickly erased him from my mind.

I am looking forward to the UCLA/Indiana game this weekend. I think UCLA is in real trouble. They lost one of the two best OCs in collegiate football (Kelly – I think LR Is the other one) and one of the best DCs in collegiate ball and replaced them with far lesser talent. In a very odd way, UCLA just hammering SC last year turned out great for SC and really awful for UCLA. First, UCLA kept Kelly, who then dumped them the following Feb, putting UCLA in a horrific position for looking for a replacement. When Kelly left, UCLA… Read more »
New IU coach Curt Cignetti is a very good coach as well as a strong recruiter. I had some good experiences with him through SuperPrep when he was as an up-and-coming asst at PITT, NCS and ALA. He was always aggressive, confident and hard-working. He comes from a big football family and his dad, Frank, is in the CFB Hall-of-Fame. Cignetti’s overall record as a HC is a pretty amazing 121-35. He’s won everywhere he’s been and already has the Hoosiers off to a 2-0 start after their dismal Tom Allen years, kind of the norm for IU football. I’m… Read more »
The Accuracy of Miller Moss Mark Sanchez — “I think he really does get the big picture. He’s not the most athletic guy. He doesn’t have the biggest arm. So he is forced. Necessity breeds these kinds of things. He has to find a way to steal completions from the pocket. He can’t run around all game, and run around and play street ball and whatever. That’s not his game. He’s got to understand leverage, spatial awareness, and anticipation because he doesn’t have the cannon for an arm. He’s a very cerebral point guard who can distribute and gets the… Read more »

Trojans Are The Talk of College Football Dan Weber (USCFootball.com) — USC has looked better than everybody on its schedule and is now favored in every game, per ESPN’s FPI ratings. Start putting numbers to those games and it’s a 12-0 regular season for the Men of Troy their first year in the BIG. Insert at 12 spot, automatic bid for the best of Group of 5 conference champ: 1.Boise ST, 2. UL Lafayette, 3. James Madison, 4. Western Kentucky. USC first out. MIami and Utah will get the 3 and 4 seed.
It was definitely exciting to see Lake McRee healthy and him having a bigger role in the offense. This feels like we’ve gone back to the Pete Carroll era when our tight ends were a huge part of our offense. Also it was nice to finallly run over a team we were supposed to beat. Joel Klatt defines what “playing offense on defense” means
“Offenses try to run just a few concepts out of 100 different formations. Simple for the offense, but difficult for the defense.
“USC now wants to give you a bunch of different defensive structures while really only running a couple of different concepts. Easy for us, difficult for you. That’s what their defense now really is.”
Grinch was the opposite, a bunch of concepts and a bunch of structures nobody could keep track of.
GA, TEXAS and OHIO ST are the top three teams in CFB per Colin Cowherd and Joel Klatt. Their other three most impressive teams so far are USC, MIA and TENN. Both have more concerns about ALA, keeping the Tide out of the top six. Cowherd predicts D’Anton Lynn will be the “hot coach on the market.” Klatt on USC’s new defensive philosophy — “USC plays offense on defense. USC plays with a run wall up front in the interior and with hard edges, and with hybrid, versatile athletes everywhere who can cover, run, and more specifically tackle, where they… Read more »

Kind of reminds me of why I became a lawyer. 😂 😂 “I don’t know.” Kind of hauntingly pitiful.
The truth is, I couldn’t come up with anything else better to do. And I liked the movie “Paper Chase” so much that I probably romanticized a much more boring real life legal career into reality.
When I finally did come up with something better to do, SuperPrep was born. I thank my lucky stars every day for that. ✌
And Allen, we’re damn glad you did and partner up in creating this website!
My partnership with John and our decision to create the TDB has been another stroke of fantastic fortune for me.
Thank you so much Jam for being a special part of our unique Trojan family here.
👍
Admit it, you had the hots for Lindsey Wagner. 😉
Did you like the movie as much as I did?
I first saw the flick in a USC film class (pretty much a total Mickey as we called them in those days).
Lindsay Wagner, not bad for a professor’s daughter
It was great. Prof. Kingsfield quotes are the best part. “You come in here with a skull full of mush; you leave thinking like a lawyer.”
My favorite exchange…
Charles W. Kingsfield Jr.: Mr. Hart, here’s a dime. Call your mother, and tell her there is serious doubt about you becoming a lawyer.
James T. Hart: [pause, as he is leaving the room] You… are a son of a bitch, Kingsfield!
Charles W. Kingsfield Jr.: Mr. Hart! That is the most intelligent thing you’ve said today. You may take your seat.
😂
GT — I would have to agree with Kingsfield’s “skull full of mush” statement. I felt that the first six months of law school were incredibly difficult at Loyola. Everyone in my four-man study group was totally freaked out. We used to dramatically joke about being able to survive anything if we could somehow pass. Total insecure young Drama Kings to be sure. My Contracts class teacher was an older lady named Mrs. Smith. In many ways, she was very no-nonsense like Kingsfield. Could be short and curt but was hugely respected and a brilliant teacher. Five Answers From USC vs UTAH ST Per Erik McKinney (WeAreSC) 1) Was the defensive performance a one-hit wonder? No. Utah State didn’t bring the same firepower into the Coliseum that LSU had at Allegiant Stadium, but this was an outstanding performance from a USC defense that is growing accustomed to playing well and constantly looking to improve. It’s itough to find much fault in allowing fewer than 200 total yards to anybody. 2) Did the offensive line show signs of improvement? Yes. It’s still not perfect and USC is likely gearing up for its toughest regular season test so… Read more »
AW, the eye test on the 2024 Trojans matches the observations above. Of course having our defense in the right places after the snap is incredibly evident since the coaching changes, but it’s the tackling. We are wrapping and driving through our opponents. One thing I can’t shake, is that damn +9.5 line for next week. I did see a sports book get to +8.5, but nothing below. I don’t bet, but I’m sometimes in awe of their accuracy. They’ve also been really wrong. Not sure if Michigan had any significant injuries vs UT, but there’s something there.
The tackling improvement is amazing, isn’t it? It’s like the entire Trojan D took a seminar on The Five Things You Need To Know About Successful Tackling. It’s just a joy to watch a safety like Kamari Ramsey zero in on people like a heat-seeking missile and take them down, whether in the open field or in traffic. One thing that has become so apparent to me that I didn’t expect to notice so significantly was just how much the USC offense has benefitted from the massively improved Trojan D. Now that the Trojan offense has moved on from LR’s… Read more »
Or maybe Lynn simply said, “If you don’t take the ball carrier to the ground on first contact, you won’t see the field again!”
Last year’s “bumper cars” defense was beyond painful to watch.
D’Anton Lynn is the #1 CFB asst coach in the country right now. Who could be even remotely more valuable in that capacity? I don’t have any other source for that, but who else could have possibly turned around one of the nation’s most worthless and embarrassing defenses in such a short period? I expected big improvement, in part because our floor was so low last season. But this fast? Most teams take a while to assimilate a large group of new coaches, as well as a completely different approach to the game — which USC clearly has already done.… Read more »
Injury Update
CB Jaylin Smith and LB Mason Cobb both sat out the Trojans’ 48-0 win against UTAH ST this past weekend. Lincoln Riley confirmed following Tuesday’s practice that he expects them both to be ready to go and active for USC’s next game vs MICH on Sept 21.
Erik McKinney/WeAreSC
.
They were both excellent against LSU. Glad they are healthy.
Cobb still got beat too much in the LSU game and was nowhere near as good as Smith, who was arguably the USC Defensive Player of the Game that day.
Cobb played really well and had some huge plays.
He also looked pedestrian and inefficient on some plays, like usual.
I didn’t see that at all.
Obviously.
Or you saw something that wasn’t happening.
Since you’re the self-described Biggest Trojan Sunshine Pumper in the World, I trust my judgment a lot more than yours.

The more they use the tight ends the more open the other receivers can be. I would hate to be a DC coming up against Riley’s offense.
College Football Playoff stock watch: As Michigan falls and is very unlikely to make the Playoff, Big Ten newcomer USC is rising (projected #10 seed) Austin Mock (The Athletic) — The Trojans entered the season with just a 9 percent chance to make the Playoff, according to my model. After a 2-0 start, including a win over LSU, they have risen to 60 percent and are now the projected 10-seed with a first-round showdown with Alabama. Maybe that’s a little optimistic for USC, but Lincoln Riley consistently produces top offenses and new defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn seems to have the defense much improved through two weeks.… Read more »
In the Michigan-Texas game, the telecasters were complimenting Michigan DC Wink Martindale while Texas was going up & down the field. His calls were not working as Sark was beating his calls all game. Martindale reminded me of Monte Kiffin who was calling cover two in every game every play the year he was DC for Kif. Just because a DC was successful in the NFL some 10 years ago doesn’t mean it will work in today’s college game. It will be interesting to see how LR compares to Sark’s calls dissecting the Wolverine defense.
Strong take Jam.
True, name value (like big Brand value) goes a long way in life, and most especially in athletics. Sark, like him or not, totally abused MICH. LR should be able to do the same with USC’s ample weapons as the Wolverines have obviously been sorely depleted and the CFB media has been reticent to explore this significantly enough — probably because MICH is the CFB NC.
Yep. The media always seems to have the teams from last year in mind early in the year. Get over it…..Michigan is not a bad team….but they have no QB. McCarthy is in the pros.
I didn’t watch the entire TEXAS/MICH game because it was such a blow-out.
From what I saw though, the Wolverines were not a well-coached team. I think ND has the same problem.
