I’m hoping for a really big beatdown of Stanford on Saturday.
John McKay, the greatest USC football coach who ever lived, hated Stanford too:
“I’d like to have beaten them by 2,000 points,” McKay said after beating the Indians (they didn’t become the Cardinal until 1981) 30-21 in 1972.
“They have no class. They’re the worst winners we’ve ever come up against.”
McKay also referred to Stanford coach John Ralston as a “horse’s ass” when the two were in the NFL. “I don’t like any part of him.”
And of course, one of the juicier cartoons of all time

In reference to John Ralston, John McKay said: “I’m not going to get in a pissing contest with a skunk”.
OSU vs USC: OSU & USC were pretty evenly matched along both lines. One key difference was that generally OSU receivers were getting open and USC receivers were not. why? OSU has better CB’s and Safties.
Definitely worth watching in its entirety (21 mins) — Chick Hearn announcing one of USC’s most enjoyable victories ever over the Indians, as they were known when I was watching as a Trojan student from the Coliseum in 1973. Go Jim Obradovich, the Trojan All-American TE from El Segundo!

Thanks for sharing a great memory Allen. I was a Freshman at USC in 1973 and was sitting in the student section. Jim Obradovich was a great TE. I wish we had one like him these days. He was a clutch receiver and excellent blocker.
Jim Obradovich truly was an amazing TE. Just about as athletic as they come, and eventually an owner of Julie’s if my memory serves me correctly. Very popular player among his teammates.
Bill Bain, definitely a gentle giant and a great guy, was a fraternity bro of mine. He drove me and a couple of others to the Colorado River for spring break one year. I never saw a person eat more hamburgers. And his enormous legs made me wonder how anyone could ever fend off Bain’s drive blocks.
Bill Bain was a great Offensive Lineman. I’ve always felt the Center, Bob McCaffrey, was underrated. Fun to watch the video as my classmate, Gary Jeter, started on the DL as a Freshman.
Bruce Feldman’s (The Athletic) Week 2 picks No. 10 USC (-8.5) at Stanford, 7:30 p.m. (ABC) I like Tanner McKee and Stanford has pretty good skill talent, but USC has a lot more juice and will come at the Cardinal in waves. USC 49, Stanford 28 Pick: USC -8.5 Stewart Mandel The Lincoln Riley era at USC begins in earnest against a Stanford team coming off a 3-9 debacle. Cardinal QB Tanner McKee is the real deal, and RB E.J. Smith (son of Emmitt) is poised for a breakout. But Stanford’s defense has been so atrocious the past few years, it’s hard to see them slowing down Caleb Williams, Jordan Addison and Co.… Read more »
Colin Cowherd on USC at STAN: “Stanford is at home. They’re not cuttin’ the grass (memories of Notre Dame shenanigans). They’re gonna let that puppy grow. They’re gonna try to slow this game down. Stanford has got a ton of senior starters. USC, outside of the interior offensive line, has almost no senior starters. They are a very young sophomore and junior-driven team, even some freshman playing. “So it’s gonna be a very, very competitive game. I think USC wins. It’s a nine-point spread. “But Lincoln Riley struggles to beat Stanford. Prepare yourself for it. This weekend’s gonna be turbulent… Read more »
Just watch a Furd band halftime show and you will know all you need to know about that classless institution. They may be smart, in some ways, but socially retarded. They don’t know the difference between humor and insulting. Your band is the biggest representative of your school. What other band has a 50 year history of sexual assault, being booed, disciplined, suspended, and banned? Really Stanford when is enough enough.
USC 2000 – Stanfurd 0. Go for 2 every time LR.
Stanford’s band pissed on the Coliseum field once. I’m done with those intellectual creeps and hope we stop scheduling them.
Beating their declining program won’t help USC much when in the B1G, and will only give STAN a good TV audience. I’m sure USC will play STAN in the future. Good for them. They will still have two Big Games instead of only CAL.
I graduated from USC, 1966, and I worked at Stanford for a few years: Stanford was always a bit more “intellectual” than SC.
To be fair, no one likes Stanford.
I am really looking forward to Saturday’s game. The point spread has dropped to 8 points. It will be a good game for me no matter which way it goes – SC blows them out or it is a close game that SC pulls out at the end. This is probably the best team Stanford will field in the foreseeable future. As it will not play the NIL game (and it will not), they will simply lack the talent. For that reason and the fact that the Bay Area is a one of the largest media markets in the nation,… Read more »
With Stanford, it’s all about their attitude. Many of us have friends or their kids who went to Stanford knows the whole story; they’re better/superior to everyone else.
I can’t wait to see Lincoln Riley against David Shaw on Saturday, their first match-up ever.
I’m looking forward to some real USC fireworks. Call me overly optimistic. I just can’t seem to help it!
I would love to see LR really get into Shaw’s head and drive him crazy trying to figure out how to stop USC.
Your dislike of the indians is off the charts! Whats funny is other than the last ten years the trojans owened Stanford!
I said here yesterday that what turned me around on STAN was that their athletic dept took such pleasure in watching USC go down at the hands of the evil NCAA, which allowed them to immediately become much more competitive against USC. This started happening long before the final Draconian penalties were announced in June, 2010. The NCAA delayed forever while trying to dig up anything possible against USC and took about five years to very publicly investigate USC before they dropped the hammer. I used to respect STAN much more than I do now. But of course I’m piling… Read more »
Stanford had the most innovative football coaches: Pop Warner, Clark Shaughnessy, Walter Camp, and Bill Walsh = very highly respected.
And, with all the innovation you refer, just how many National Championships does Stanford have ?
hmm…so are you saying that these coaches were not very innovative?
Quite the contrary, Yes, they were very innovative. Just not, while at the ‘furd’
incorrect…please correct your name to zero1. hitherto: Pop Warner coached Stanford to a national championship in 1926; Clark Shaughnessy coached the Indians to undefeated and Rose bowl win in 1940; Walt Camp coached Furd to undefeated in 1895; Bill Walsh [the greatest FB mind ever] directed Stanford to 9-3 & 8-4 seasons.😀
Congrats to you on some of your good teams of the past (and props on the SC degree as well). But now you’re stuck with a severe case of David Shaw-in-decline. He’s either too arrogant to care, too stubborn to fix it, too dumb to figure it out, or unfortunately at a school that is simply relegated to playing lesser football now and in the future — because the CFB world is leaving you behind. I’ve long been told by some Stanford people whom I consider knowledgeable that Shaw can have the STAN job regardless of his record, as long… Read more »
I am not a Stanford FB fan. I am a USC FB fan: I graduated from USC in 1966 [as you noted]. Later, I worked at Stanford University for 2 years. Stanford has always been, from the late 19th century, a fierce rival to SC [ albeit SC has won twice as much]; Stanford embarrassed the fact that while USC was superior athletically, Stanford was more intellectually and scholarly superior [ you have to love their band]. The Indians had many innovative coaches ala Pop Warner, and also some very good coaches [John Ralston, Dennis Green, Jack Elway, Jim Harbaugh… Read more »
Now poor STAN is back down to the bottom of the conference like in the laughable days of guys like Buddy Teevens, Paul Wiggin, and Walt Harris, just to name a few of the Farm’s less-than-fierce leaders. Most of us didn’t see David Shaw joining this incompetent STAN coaching club, at least not so quickly, but now he too can’t win anymore. It’s like Shaw secretly and silently crossed over into a new, sad, invisible realm of also-ran, loser coaches. I always knew Shaw had to be just kidding before the season started when he was bragging about how good… Read more »
“players matter” eg Christian McCaffrey. I think back to when the Cal bears were good…some 15 years ago? They Had Aaron Rogers and Mayshawn Lynch.
You’re stuck in the Past….get over it 😠
To wit: “Coaching matters” AND “players matter” perhaps equally or nearly so. So the old argument is/was: How could John Wooden lose with so many great players? Yes, But Why would Lou Alcindor [New York] choose to play for John Wooden [Los Angeles]?
Hitherto, the coach might be the single most important factor in a team’s success…but the player quality is not far behind.
Jamaica , IMHO the 3 most arrogant schools are ND,Stanford & USC. The ranking is definitely based on what school the fan attended. I say this as a loyal Trojan fan.
For me it is Oregon. Worst fans of a team that has never really accomplished anything.
I live in Oregon. To me, they are more of a stereotypical fan, rather than arrogant.
My experience is with the Oregon fans that travel outside their state. They seem to want to tell anyone around how they are the best team ever. At least until they stop talking and you ask about their lack of championships.
Maybe they’ll shut up for a while after GA woodshedded them 49-3, but I doubt it. We can all take solace in the fact that ORE is basically still a stepping-stone school. Their best coaches split for better recruiting areas, bigger stadiums, more prestige, better weather, and everyone seems to have great facilities now. After seeing them flap around against GA, I really wish the Ducks were on our schedule. It’s amazing how quickly things can change in CFB. I’m hopeful they’ll continue to skid south, but all their tougher games are in Eugene. Maybe Phil Knight actually hurts ORE… Read more »
Some local news from the Georgia-Oregon game here last weekend at MB Stadium:
Georgia Fans pelted the Oregon Ducks with bread as they headed through the tunnel to their locker room. Bread, you say? Think about feeding ducks at a local pond with pieces of bread! Hilarious!😂
That is truly funny. Glad to hear about it. Duck fans have become insufferable since they started to develop into a much stronger program. Just ask Huskies who decide to venture into Eugene. Incredibly negative stories.
IMO, the difference is STAN is definitely superior in academics to both USC and ND. It’s simply harder to get into, has more prestige, and is generally considered a top 5 school by all, the big Silicon Valley feeder — at least that’s my perception. Yet STAN is only a top 40 or so football program. Tier 2 at best. They even unilaterally considered dropping out of the Pac-10 about 20 years ago, they care so little about football (which makes them all the more snobbish and arrogant when they beat us). Both USC and ND are generally labeled elite… Read more »
The silicon valley companies like apple google hire more people from Georgia Tech than they do from ‘Furd or Berzerkley.
Too bad GT isn’t nearly as highly regarded as STAN.
