USC and Lincoln Riley salvage challenging, inconsistent signing day by landing Crown Jewel Jahkeem Stewart
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — It had been a turbulent morning, at the end of a turbulent recruiting cycle for USC and Lincoln Riley. Ten prospects had already decommitted during the past six months, among them a handful of top-100 talents.
Several of the state’s top players, too, had spurned the Trojans in favor of more far-flung football powers, like Alabama or Texas A&M or Penn State, all of which inked more top California recruits for their 2025 classes, bringing Riley’s recruiting emphasis and strategy into question.
Signing day had been trending in a disappointing direction for USC, well before Wednesday had even arrived. Then, just as the class was coming together, one of USC’s prized defensive assistants, Matt Entz, took the head coaching job at Fresno State, leaving the Trojans in an even tougher spot, scrambling to secure two top linebackers who seemed solid just the night before.
It was hardly the preamble Riley had hoped for ahead of the early signing window, at the start of his fourth season as the Trojans coach. Riley, at one point, even found himself reiterating his allegiance to USC, after a report linked him to a lesser head job at Central Florida.
But when all was said and done Wednesday, the day would still conclude in just the way USC’s coach had hoped, with the biggest signing of his Trojan tenure to date.
The flourish at the finish of USC’s 2025 class came courtesy of five-star Louisiana defensive lineman Jahkeem Stewart, a game-wrecker on the interior who fittingly calls himself “Thanos,” referring to the intimidating supervillain at the center of the early Marvel films.
“It was important,” Riley said of reeling in Stewart. “He’s one of the more talented defensive linemen that I’ve had a chance to be involved with recruiting. And it’s just, this is one of those things where everything about this just fits. We’re really glad he’s a Trojan.”
That was obvious as his signing became official Wednesday, as a bevy of USC staffers, including defensive line coach Eric Henderson, posted photos on social media wearing Thanos’ trademark gauntlet from the Marvel films, with two of its golden fingers shaped in USC’s “V for Victory” sign. Henderson especially had been critical in reeling in Stewart, who transferred to Henderson’s high school alma mater, Edna Karr High in New Orleans, ahead of reclassifying to the 2026 class.
Whether he’ll be able to make an impact right away on a USC defense that could definitely use him is another question. The 17-year old Louisiana defensive tackle hasn’t played a football game in over a year — and has only played 12 games at the varsity level — due to rules regarding his transfer. But after watching him wreck opposing offensive lines up close, Riley didn’t seem bothered by that.
“There’s a lot of people that I don’t think would be ready, physically or mentally, to do that. But he is one of ‘em,” Riley said. “We had zero hesitation to target him and had zero hesitation or questions about what he brings to the table here.”
Not only would Stewart’s signing bump the Trojans up to the 13th-ranked recruiting class in the country per 247 Sports, but it also made it more palatable to look past the prospects USC couldn’t close on Wednesday.
Several rumored flips fell just short for USC in the final hours, while two linebackers expected to sign with the Trojans instead went elsewhere, presumably in the wake of Entz’s exit. San Juan Capistrano four-star linebacker Madden Faraimo, the highest-rated prospect left in the state, opted to sign with Notre Dame, handing USC its biggest blue chip recruiting defeat of the day — and enraging Trojan fans as well.
USC also wasn’t able to sign four-star linebacker Jadon Perlotte, who was expected to flip to Tennessee, or heavily valued Georgia defensive lineman Christian Ingram, who signed with South Carolina.
USC did manage to secure a flip from Michigan four-star cornerback Alex Graham, but otherwise made few waves outside of securing Stewart.
Most of the turbulence that defined USC’s recruiting cycle had already settled a few weeks earlier, when five-star Corona Centennial quarterback Husan Longstreet announced last month that he would sign with the Trojans. His commitment came right on the heels of another five-star quarterback, Georgia’s Julian Lewis, pulling his own pledge to USC in favor of Colorado.
That dance between two elite quarterback prospects had been a delicate one, as quarterbacks coach Luke Huard was tasked with maintaining a relationship with Longstreet and his family through the process, even as Lewis kept his commitment for over a year.
That preparation would prove prescient. When it finally became clear Lewis wouldn’t sign with USC, Huard moved quickly to secure Longstreet, who had been committed to Texas A&M and whose arrival was, like Stewart, an important salve for a class that otherwise had just two signees ranked in the top 150 nationally.
“This was really about Husan, and the more we got to know him, got to evaluate him, the more we got to see his mental makeup, how team-oriented he was, how serious he was about the game, we just felt like in the end, there wasn’t a better fit for us,” Riley said. “That’s eventually why we made the decisions we made. I feel like we landed on the perfect guy for us.”
In spite of what could have been with USC’s class, Riley assured he was satisfied with where it ended up. USC inked four offensive linemen, including two ranked in the top-150, to help bolster its offensive front.
It also took steps to rebuild its secondary, replenishing a room that’s set to lose seven contributors after the bowl game. The Trojans signed five defensive backs, including Upland four-star cornerback Trestin Castro, who was one of just three signees at USC ranked in the top 20 of the state. Riley said it was a “high priority” to add bodies who could compete early as the program anticipates losing at least seven senior defensive backs.
There was still work to do, including adding a third quarterback, for “depth”, via the transfer portal, Riley said.
“We had really – two, kinda, battles here at the end, or two ones that we knew were gonna go down to the wire,” Riley said at a press conference on Wednesday, sounding almost weary after the morning’s developments. “And one certainly went in our favor, and one didn’t, and that’s a little bit of the nature of this right now.”
But after a roller-coaster of a recruiting cycle, the coach said he was leaving Wednesday with “a great feeling”. The question now, with the transfer portal set to open Monday, is how long that feeling might last.
Other coaches in addition to Entz could also leave in the coming weeks, even as Riley assured no staff changes were imminent.

They should get rid of kickers(for the most part) from the game of american football. I guess I just get tired of seeing real football players bang their heads against each other and end up with concussions and serious knee injuries for 59 minutes and and 50 seconds and then in the last 10 seconds this 5’5″, 140 pound kicker hippody hops in and kicks a field goal and they carry him off as the hero of the game. Kickers(for the most part) are not football players. They don’t know how to block or tackle or any of the other… Read more »

Losing big-time games isn’t any fun. But winning them sure is.
I’m ready for some.more of that fun we haven’t had much of lately.
Me thinks AZ St is perfectly fine with the demise of the P12 and their new conference.
RB Cam Skattebo! Fun to watch, great culture guy.

Jen Cohen needs to organize an intervention with LR. She should gather with USC’s best sports psychologist, maybe Pete Carroll and maybe even LR’s wife for a sit down with LR. We have all chewed over his many dysfunctions. It’s not like he’s a rookie Pop Warner coach. He should know better. So why is he doing this? Has he become; burned out, complacent, unmotivated, comfortable with the millions and wants to get fired and return to Texas, so burdened by the mega contract that he feels he has to do it all and failing it all. Everyone sees the… Read more »

Robert Griffin III suggests Lincoln Riley for Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Nick Geddes (GOATS) — Should USC head football coach Lincoln Riley decide to make the transition to the NFL, Robert Griffin III has both the perfect spot and role in mind for the 41-year-old. Griffin, speaking on the “Pardon My Take” podcast released Friday, said that the Chicago Bears (4-8) should hire Riley as the team’s offensive coordinator to work with quarterback and 2024 No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams. Griffin likes Riley’s fit as the offensive play caller rather than as head coach: “I don’t believe that Lincoln would succeed in Chicago as the head coach.”… Read more »
Riley isn’t going anywhere as no one will match or come close enough to what he is being paid at USC. He knows he has the money locked up no matter how poorly he leads the football program. If push comes to shove he will simply go into the Clay Helton mode of I got mine while I’ll tell you anything you want to hear and just do what I want. Riley will never recruit a top 10 class unless he brings in another Coach Henderson or two to do the heavy lifting for the program. This present class has… Read more »
The occasional LR comparisons to long-lost Clay Helton (who actually bettered LR this season by going 8-4 in year three) will have come full circle when we start referring to Lincoln as Gentleman Lincoln. Remember Gentleman Clay?
If that ever starts happening, Jen Cohen will need to find a way to prematurely rescue USC football from itself, yet again.
Riley has been a big disappointment. But when he really starts coaching like Gomer, Jen Cohen has to fire him, no matter the buyout. Riley has made a lot of bad decisions, but he is nowhere near Helton territory.
Helton actually outcoached Riley this year, going 8-4 to Riley’s 6-6, which included losses to other crap teams like MARYD, UW (ORE beat the Huskies 49-21) and RUT. How do you honestly think Riley would be doing at a program like GA SOUTH? Caleb Williams would have never followed LR there for one. He’d probably be underwater and making excuses or claiming he was only three wins from a bowl game. Hopefully, LR pulls out of his USC-bust tailspin. But if you told me back when he was hired in late Nov ’21 that LR would look this bad heading… Read more »

Congrats on the TDB Post of the Day!
Great points Jam, I agree wholeheartedly with everything you wrote.
Per Colin Cowherd, Jen Cohen has been looking hard for a USC Football GM for many months and even asked him for names he would recommend long ago. He gave her a list of ten.
USC just hasn’t been able to get anybody to take the job so far and has been turned down.
In the meantime, Dan Lanning has become the new face of college football per more than one CFB analyst.
Cowherd believes Sark would be that new CFB face now, slightly over Lanning.
I had never thought about a GM role in college sports until Luck was hired by Stanford. The more I’ve thought about it, the more I think that in today’s college sports landscape, it makes a ton of sense. Originally, the HC responsibility was primarily about Xs and Os. Then recruiting was added to that. Then class attendance and academic performance and off-field behavior was expected to be overseen by coaches. Then, alumni and donor relations, along with being the “face” of the team. Now in the new order, there is NIL and transfer portal management. I believe, especially for… Read more »
As I posted USC has been trying to fill this new critical football position for a long time. The people Jen Cohen has targeted so far just haven’t said yes for whatever reason.
I have a lot of confidence in Cohen, and I’m sold on the fact she will find someone who wants to work with LR and keep him away from things he isn’t qualified to handle.
LR is clearly over his head and trying to do too much. He needs help of some kind big time.
lol Cowie kissed and made up with ex pal Suck … wasn’t real high on him two years ago

Colin Cowherd On USC Recruiting
“I think USC is struggling in recruiting because Lincoln Riley doesn’t like recruiting — like Chip Kelly didn’t like recruiting at UCLA either.”
The Tide Really Rolls in California
ALA, which finished with the nation’s #2 class behind TEXAS and ahead of ORE, signed more Golden State recruits (7) than USC (5).
Another example of the LR dysfunction. Fly across the continent to see a recruit but don’t drive 30 min to the #1 HS in the country?!
Belichick Looks To Be Angling for His NFL Return Scott Polacek (b/r) — Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports said, “Most are skeptical that Bill (Belichick) would seriously consider coaching in the college game, even with the landscape shifting toward an NFL style model.” An NFL executive told Schultz “that he believes Belichick is being strategic, using this to push NFL teams to act faster and to make it widely known that he plans to return in 2025.” According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Belichick is “open to both the NFL and college football” and isn’t “ruling anything out.” While it wouldn’t… Read more »
One could make the argument that Belechick was a creation of Tom Brady. Before Brady came on the scene Belechick was 41-55.After Brady left he was 29-38. So without Brady, Belechick was 70-93. Then there were all of those playoff games that the Pats won with a field in the last seconds that could have gone the other way plus the miracle Seattle victory when Pete called that horrendous pass play that was intercepted in the last seconds. I can’t see Belechick taking the NC job. He doesn’t relate well to people, in general. He’s not a people person.Relationships are… Read more »
Ya, I think there’s no doubt that Tom Brady won the divorce war big-time over Bill Belichick. Tom went off and won another Super Bowl without him and signed a massive Fox broadcasting contract. Belichick quickly sunk into the toilet. The only similarity is they both lost their women. Surprisingly to some, the NFL completely ignored uber-hard-headed Belichick after he got dumped and replaced by first-time HC Jerod Mayo, whoever that is. Exiting one’s highly public football career is tricky even for the best. Most don’t go out on their own terms. Even Hall of Famer/relationship kings like Pete Carroll… Read more »
He should just retire. He’s 72 and not far from 73. It’s time to retire, relax, buy a beachfront home and take a swim every morning and a nap in the afternoon.
I get the impression big Bill would most likely rather be bitten by a shark than forego another shot at the NFL, don’t you?
He’s addicted to this head coaching stuff, and now he’s got to live with the burden that everyone thinks Brady was the reason for his success. Life can be funny, but Bill isn’t laughing anymore.
I guess some guys can’t get it out of their system but there is a time to quit.Right now the fact that he wasn’t a great coach seems to be a big secret. I don’t see a lot of the football pundants writing about it.If I was him I would want to keep it a secret. Let the football historians tell the truth after I’m dead and buried. Don’t go back into coaching and show them the truth
And hang out on the Manning-cast. Although I’m not a Bill B fan, I have to admit he does ok with the Mannings. It’s a strange mix, but it works.
Old school baby! There’s still a place for that.
He would definitely be a “CEO” type that has assistant coaches do all the work outside of the meetings. I remember McKay and especially Bear Bryant standing on top of a high platform watching the practicing going on while smoking cigs. McKay roaming around in his golf cart.
McKay had an exceptional eye for talent, knew where to put it, and suffered no fools. He wasn’t just tough on his players either. He would also loudly abuse his assistants on the field at practice if he didn’t like how their position group was looking. He was a classic example of Trust But Verify.
Love those old school “coach’s shoes”.
Ya, Riddell’s were all over the place when I played. Personally, I liked Spot Bilts for some reason. Probably fewer blisters, the killer of training camp high school football fun per my hazy old man recall.
Trojans who have entered the Transfer Portal
WR Kyron Hudson
OL Amos Talalele
OL Gino Quinones
K Denis Lynch
QB Jake Jensen
QB Miller Moss
Quinones just wasn’t good enough to start and he did have injury issues. Hudson’s the one I hate to see leave. One thing though, Branch is not the WR that puts fear in everyone’s eye….. not anymore. LR has to stop wasting plays on a receiver who drops more passes than catches and seems fearful getting hit. Maybe Kyron didn’t like what he saw in Maiva after Moss was demoted. And of course you have no clue what the QB room will be like next season. Could be a mess. You know LR will be hunting a Portal QB. He… Read more »
In this day Branch is too short to be a receiver. The second best QB in the portal is … Miller Moss! # 1 is also a pro style QB! One size fits all, that’s LR!
Colin Cowherd’s Three Coaching Tiers
— Won NCs
Dabo Swinney
Kirby Smart
— Coaches Who Can Win a NC
Kalen DeBoer
Josh Heupel
Brian Kelly
Dan Lanning
Lane Kiffin
Steve Sarkisian
— Coaches Who Maybe Can, But Maybe Can’t
Ryan Day (doesn’t beat good teams; OHIO ST loss was the worst ever; MICH is in his head)
Mario Cristobal (better recruiter than coach)
James Franklin (doesn’t beat good teams)
Marcus Freeman (really young – 38)
Lincoln Riley (his teams lack toughness, pop, and grit; recruiting not so good; staff needs work)
All the while LR wearing ear muffs obvious to any criticism and stubborn to the end.
Well then, USC hired the wrong Okie. Should’ve gone after Josh Heupel. He has wins over everybody in the SEC except GA.
Remember when Lane Kiffin quickly deserted his TENN team for USC when Mike Garrett came calling on the heels of Pete Carroll’s split.
Josh Heupel has 10-2 TENN in the CFB playoffs. The Vols lost to GA and 6-6 ARK 19-14 in Fayetteville.
Where’s Mike Garrett when you need him?
I will say, Josh hasn’t aged well. Been enjoying that southern cooking a bit too much.
😂 😂 — success with a face that didn’t get him the job for sure, but I think he’s a darn good coach who could win it all at TENN one day.
Kyron Hudson is entering the transfer portal. Bummer he’s leaving and we’ll never forget his catches against LSU. We should have enough depth to cover his departure but it does say something about the coaching in the receivers room. Doubt Riley lets Dennis Simmons go but maybe time to think about it.
Bummer indeed. He made some totally fantastic catches for USC. Won the LSU game for us with one of the greatest Trojan receptions I’ve ever seen.
My favorite WR. That puts Duce in for a lot of PT.
Maybe if Maiava had thrown less to short covered up Branch and more to the taller guys, Hudson might have stayed. Of course a balanced offense would have given all the receivers more chances to get open. Good for Hudson to go find a program without a dysfunctional HC. Surprised more players and coaches don’t jump ship.
Zach Branch’s bizarre decline as a threat at USC is one of the most perplexing things I have witnessed within USC football. I remember thinking at the beginning of this season that he would be ready to turn the jets on, let loose, and explode onto the scene as one of the nation’s premier special teams’ weapons. This wasn’t original, overly biased thinking on my part. It was echoed in the CFB Pre-Season mags and shows as well. And I’m totally bummed about losing Kyron Hudson, a Mater Dei guy, to the Portal. This just sucks big-time all around. Wish… Read more »
Poor coaching.
All this talk about Longstreet and Stewart, the 2 5* recruits for USC. Will either one see the field next season? I doubt it. Longstreet has a lot to learn to get up to speed. It took Maiava most of the season to get even partially ready. Maiava will likely be USC’s QB next season unless Riley scores big in the portal. Lets hope Maiava improves his accuracy. Stewart is 17 and hasn’t played football in a year. A year from now he will only be 18. A big leap from sophomore HS football to in the trenches in the… Read more »
Longstreet was not recruited to start next season, but Stewart they think has a shot, maybe not right away but working his way up quickly. Bienemy as RB coach made me throw up in the mouth. Sorry.😁
Some TUMS may help that reflux. Cause he’s a Bruin or what about Bienemy? Maybe Riley will try to hit a home run on a QB in the portal rather than a serviceable back up. The #2 QB on 247 portal list looks good. Oh, wait, we know that guy and he needs a balanced offense, never mind.
UCLA fires OC Eric Bienemy after only one year in Westwood.
Bye Bye Eric
This butt-covering statement from Bienemy’s agent, Jason Fletcher, cracks me up:
“He’s still getting paid by the Commanders,” Fletcher said. “After interviewing for head coaching jobs last year, he wanted to stay active and busy. So, he decided to go help out Deshaun Foster, who is like his little brother, at UCLA as opposed to sitting out a year. The plan was always to return to the NFL in 2025, and he’s looking forward to the opportunities ahead.”
Bienemy’s ceiling appears to be a good RBs coach, not so much an OC. Andy Reid runs the offense for the Chiefs.
Riley’s”I don’t know if Erntz’ departure made a difference in landing either IB” is coaches speak purely in covering his butt. Don’t think for a minute ND coaches weren’t on the phone smelling blood with Faraimo when the rumors hit on Erntz’ moving. And did he get on the phone to Faraimo himself to try controlling the damage? Did he and did he match or better ND’s offer? This is the game that must be played today! But the truth of all this adds onto the previous 10-top rated athletes bolting on Riley’s program during the season that the sports… Read more »
Lincoln Riley deflected the idea Matt Entz’ departure impacted USC’s class yesterday… R.J. Abeytia (USCFootball.com) — “I don’t know that I can sit here today and say we did or didn’t get somebody because of today. I don’t know that it was that impactful in terms of anything that played out today,” Riley said. “[Entz’ move to Fresno State] didn’t get finalized until here this morning. One of those situations that came together pretty quickly, so I don’t know that it’s fair to say that it did or didn’t complicate things. In this world, it’s just part of it. “When you… Read more »
Just to put things in perspective for us…..at Illinois…..where the team went 9-3 and the program has been turned around from the cellar of the BIG…….the head coach is being hailed locally for bringing in a class ranked 43rd. Normally in the low 50’s or lower.
Tremendous class full of top notch 3 star players! He really did the job.
Of course USC has higher aspirations for its program but it can be done. A few good transfers and these USC classes could be enough to win…..a lot.
Ah, if only USC could pretend it was ILL.
How much is ILL paying Bret Bielema to make it relevant for the first time since the days of Red Grange one hundred years ago?
Sorry. I just couldn’t resist. ✌
He’s getting about 8.5 million this year including his bonus in cash….of course there are also the other things…….
As for Red Grange……don’t laugh…..in just another few years most kids will be thinking of Reggie Bush that way. It’s been nearly 20 and counting.
Got yah! 😉
Interesting thoughts…
Do you think Bret Bielema would lead USC to a national championship or back to elite status?
Would you choose Bielema over Lincoln Riley to coach USC based on what you know of these two coaches now?
How do think Lincoln Riley would do if he were coaching ILL?
I am not impressed with Bielema as a HC, but he would kick butt as a O-line position coach and that alone makes him valuable.
Bret Bielema started out like a bat out of hell at WIS in 2006 when he went 12-1 and finished 5/7 in the country. That was the highlight of his career. After going 68-24 over seven years with the Badgers, Bielema bolted for big paycheck ARK where he did a 29-34 5-year faceplant with the Razorbacks. Sound familiar Trojan fans? Bielema then rehabs himself as an NFL asst with two teams for three years before ILL picks him up to fix their long downtrodden program which crawled to a 2-6 record in 2020. Now he’s the King of Champaign after… Read more »
Illinois does not aspire to lofty goals so just a 9-3 year is like winning the NC.
LOL……I think of Bielema sort of like an over weight coach O with a bit less ability. I would choose Bielema over Riley but he would never fit at USC. Just the rough and tough and overweight would never do.
but if I needed an OL coach I’d give him the store.
Riley would get his house burned down after his first presser……that girly, cute smart attitude would go over like a forest fire in the midwest.
And across town, DeShaun Foster’s got his own problems, only bigger now… Early signing day could have gone a lot better for UCLA and true Bruin Foster Ben Bolch (LAT) — As DeShaun Foster spoke with reporters about his first recruiting class, the UCLA coach’s efforts to restock his roster were becoming more complicated. QB Madden Iamaleava and WR Jace Brown, widely expected to become Bruins, publicly revealed Wednesday afternoon they were instead becoming Arkansas Razorbacks. Love seeing the Ruins suffering as well as canning Bienemy. Wonder if TJ Harden would like to come over to us. He would be a good transfer portal back to add to our RB room.
I like the Harden transfer idea. He’s good.
Would USC lose Peterson if they went after Harden? Is he worth it?
