USC has only made it to three Elite Eights in its entire history (1940, ’54, ’01) and only two final fours — where it lost to BRADLEY in ’54 (I was two years old), and to KU in ’40. USC’s only played KU once in the NCAA’s, and that was in ’40, when the Jayhawks squeezed by the Trojans 43-42.
USC’s overall record in the NCAA’s is a losing 14-19 (12-17 including NCAA vacated appearances).
DRAKE (Des Moines, Iowa) has a combined record of 6-4 in the NCAAs, with three Sweet Sixteen appearances (’69, ’70, ’71) and also three Elite Eights, where it beat CSU in ’69, 84-77, beat HOU in ’70, 92-77, and beat ND 79-72 in ’71.
UCLA eventually beat charter Missouri Valley Conference member DRAKE in ’69’s Final Four, 82-85, but the Bulldogs won 3rd place by pummeling UNC 104-84.
From 1969-71 was DRAKE’s time to shine, after which it dropped off the basketball map. This will only be DRAKE’s third NCAA game since they lost to KU 73-71 in the Elite Eight in ’71.
It should be an exciting, unpredictable game today, with both USC and DRAKE desperately looking to finally make a mark in March Madness, following years of futility for both schools.
But USC has the wonderful, massively wing-spanned, soon-to-be NBAer Evan Mobley … and Andy Enfield’s Trojans, a 6.5 point fave, seem to be under a large amount of pressure to win in Round 1.
Most everyone seems to think the USC Trojans can literally win, or lose, any game it plays on the hardwood — except no one, not even Barack Obama, thinks USC can beat GONZAGA.

Curiosity won-out, watched the last 15 minutes, and Peterson and the Other-Mobley looked good.
Saw the KU highlights and that is an athletic team with its center McCormack, at 6’10”, 250 pounds, a handful. Kevin might get pushed around, so his bro’ may have to do the heavy lifting with McCormack.
Charles Barkley picks USC to beat KU!
Let play even a little better on Monday SC ………FIGHT ON !!!!!
USC has lost seven straight to KU. They play in Round 2 on Monday.
USC runs away in the end, 72-56, led by the Mosely Bros, especially Evan. The story of the night — “The length of USC.” Amazing to see just how good Evan is in many ways.
Getting it done when you are supposed to get it done……. this second half performance looking good …….FIGHT ON !!!!!
Double digit lead ……FIGHT ON !!!!!
Hey SC ……….Rebounds on the defensive boards ?????
Evan Mobley to USC is absolutely no less than Jabbar and Walton to UCLA.
Um… come on Allen. Kareem is easily the greatest college player of all time and Walton is on the list of greatest college players of all time. I think they each won 3 championships. Evan didn’t even win the conference. He’s good but not anywhere near the neighborhood of those two, like nowhere near.
Read what I said, again. I carefully said “Evan Mobley to USC.” Not Evan Mobley to the world of college basketball. Huge difference there.
I read it. It’s still crazy take. If he leads them to a championship then this take can at least be considered. Right now it’s silly. Maybe he’s like Blake Griffin to Oklahoma or Andrew Bogut to Utah.
Tell me a better center at USC ever, even though they all played way more than a year. I’m waiting.
Also, Jabbar and Walton had much more talent, as well as coaching, to work with than Mobley does at USC, and it’s not even close.
Evan Mobley doesn’t even have to win one more game at USC, and he’s already the best college center to ever play for the Trojans.
all of that I agree with. But to say he’s no less to USC than Jabbar or Walton to UCLA? No way. Luka Garza is the best Iowa center of all time and might win two player of the year awards, every bit a college player than Evan, I’d say significantly better. Would you say he’s had the same impact for Iowa as Jabbar did for UCLA? Not if you were being serious.
If you agree with everything I just said, fine. Great.
I have no opinion on Garza, nor how he compares to Jabbar, or anyone else.
But when you ever come up with a better center for USC then Mobley, let me know. Or don’t let me know.
nice…. NICE !…….Inbound play SC !!!!!………….FIGHT ON !!!!!
Can we look a little sharper SC please ?
Simple SC ………Win this next 20 minutes ………FIGHT ON !!!!!
Well ……………………………….A halftime lead at least ……FIGHT ON !!!!!
We do practice foul shots I hope !
USC has never had a big man like Evan Mobley. He is from another planet!
Lets try and make more free throws please ……..FIGHT ON !!!!!
Really? USC and free throwing is simply too stressful to ever watch. Wish my TV just automatically turned off when USC is at the line.
LOL !
Both these teams came to play today. 23-23 with 8:30 mins to go in first half.
Kansas’s guy wearing # 1 looks like he might be a handful .
A virtual one-man team!
EM’s two immediate blocks at the rim were just unreal!
BTW, the No. 3 seed Jayhawks defeated the No. 14 seed Eastern Washington University Eagles 93-84.
There is one reason I (and I hope these SC Players also ) do not want to think (too much anyhow ) about Kansas today ……………………… Did not Ohio State make some sort of news recently ?????
I really doubt USC’s thinking about KU now. But we know KU sure has USC on its mind!
Ah C’mon Wally Szczerbiak (I am a Knicks fan and Szczerbiak works for Knicks-owned TV Network covering every Knicks game ) ……..He just predicted Kansas will win their next game .
And I gotta say as a USC ……..Colts ……..NY Mets ……….Knicks and NY Rangers fan ……..Team that has given me the most happiness lately ? ……(Can’t believe I am typing this teams name ) >>>>>>>> The NY Knicks ! (Colts where supposed to be good ).
Don’t know when SC Mens Basketball will have an Evan Mobley in their program again (hopefully soon ) so lets take a nice ride these next few weeks SC ! ………FIGHT ON !!!!!
Ever try to vicariously walk in another man’s shoes?– Today I imagined being an SC basketballer waking up to a stomach full of butterflies, the marauding type, the very worst kind. ‘Biggest game of my career,’ I think to myself. ‘ I can’t mess up, be the goat or something, and let my boys down — They’re depending on me.’ ‘Still, I am a bit scared, but I’m not telling anybody. And to be honest with myself, this might be my last chance to have pro scouts remember me. So don’t be scared, don’t be scared, man– that probably wont… Read more »
