USC coach Lincoln Riley expected to land elite recruiting class despite quiet start
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — During the hectic few hours that followed his unexpected hire at USC, Lincoln Riley paused to make an important call. Raleek Brown, a top Sooners commit, like many other Southern California prospects was rightfully stunned by news of Riley’s move from Oklahoma to USC. But the call was meant to ease those concerns, reassuring the No. 2 overall player in the state that he still had an offer to play for Riley — now just a short drive away in L.A.
The next night, a few hours after his introductory press conference, Riley made that drive himself, hammering home the same message during a visit to Brown’s living room in Monrovia. A few days later, the Santa Ana Mater Dei all-purpose back officially flipped from Oklahoma and followed Riley to USC.
Brown’s decision made him the first commit of the Riley era — and an important symbol of USC’s reemergence on the recruiting trail — but as early signing day looms, the speedy five-star still stands largely alone in the coach’s first recruiting class. An exodus of commits in the wake of Riley’s hiring left USC’s 2022 class stripped down to its studs, with only a four-star cornerback in Fabian Ross, a largely unknown edge rusher in Stockton Edison three-star prospect Devan Thompkins and an Australian punter, Atticus Bertrams, remaining.
As it stands, USC’s class ranks a meager 101st nationally — dead last in the Pac-12. But no one expects that to be the case Wednesday night.
“Everyone in front of them is deathly afraid of what’s to come,” says 247Sports.com recruiting director Brandon Huffman.
That momentum is palpable, as USC’s return to prominence under Riley has been the talk of the recruiting trail since the coach’s arrival. But what that progress may yield in the form of results on Wednesday remains to be seen. Several top USC targets, including five-star Mater Dei cornerback Domani Jackson (above), don’t plan to share their decisions the first day of the early signing period. Jackson, the state’s No. 1 player, plans to announce Friday. Others are waiting until February, allowing the coaching carousel to cool off for a few weeks.
The extra time can’t hurt Riley, who has had to first build his coaching staff and rebuild USC’s recruiting class on the fly ahead of the early signing period. With some prospects, like four-star Mater Dei receiver CJ Williams, he’s had to start from scratch in the final stages of their recruitment. Others, like four-star Las Vegas safety Zion Branch, already were considering the Trojans before Riley’s arrival, and their interest has intensified.
For Williams, Riley’s late-arriving approach appears to have made headway. An official visit at USC this past weekend was enough to convince Williams to step away from his commitment to Notre Dame and re-open his recruitment two days before signing day.
He’s one of a few top-100 prospects, along with Branch, who could help Riley deliver a statement to start the early signing period. Others like four-star Las Vegas edge rusher Cyrus Moss, four-star Mater Dei linebacker David Bailey and four-star Bellflower St. John Bosco offensive lineman Earnest Greene III could have surprises in store after Riley and his new staff put on the full-court press.
But more than likely, Huffman says, USC will come out of early signing day with a handful of top prospects signed and a few more to come — perhaps, as soon as Friday.
“Get Domani back on the board,” Huffman said, “and the sky is the limit.”
Jackson was once on board, decommitting last month before Riley was hired. On Sunday he was back on USC’s campus, posing for photos with the new coach and his former Mater Dei teammate and Louisiana State cornerback Elias Ricks, who is one of USC’s most coveted targets out of the transfer portal.
Both talented cornerbacks could soon be Trojans, which would be a major early victory for Riley in his effort to mark his territory out West. But regardless of what happens Wednesday, Riley’s presence alone on the recruiting trail has made waves that USC hasn’t created in years.
The coach already has two five-star pledges in the fold for 2023 and is just getting started.
“If you’re another Pac-12 school, you better figure it out this cycle,” Huffman said. “Because there’s a new sheriff in town that’s going to completely change everything.”

LAT — Former USC defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, an analyst on UCLA coach Chip Kelly’s staff, is serving as the Bruins’ defensive line coach during their Holiday Bowl game against No. 18 North Carolina State on Dec. 28 at Petco Park in San Diego.
What a treat to get to see Clancy screw up another defense in pursuit of nothing working for the great Chipper himself.
Good old Clancy, the world’s most unenthusiastic interview. He could be so aggravating, at least when he was at USC. Refused to recruit and fielded horrible defenses. I’m very glad he’s now with the little gutties. Hopefully, Choc Chip makes Clancy the permanent DL coach.
USC running back Kenan Christon’s suspension reduced on appeal Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — “The university suspension that caused USC running back Kenan Christon to miss one football season and threatened to hold him out for another has been reduced on appeal, The Times has learned, potentially allowing Christon to rejoin USC’s football and men’s track teams as soon as this summer. “Christon was suspended in early September, after a physical altercation with another male USC student in which Christon put the student in a headlock for 17 seconds. No arrests were made and no charges were filed. The two students separately… Read more »
Heard he entered the portal soon after.
Wonder why he would have fought so hard to have his suspension lifted if he was just headed out via the portal anyway? It seems like a waste since Christon was still found guilty of all seven student conduct violations anyway.
I’ve always thought of him as a track guy more than a football player. Under Helton, he never had any room to run, so his speed wasn’t utilized. I suspect LR can do a lot better than Christon. Just a hunch.
He is listed in the portal along with Liam Douglass, O lineman.
Maybe now that his suspension has finally been lifted, he’ll stay with USC. As I said, I don’t care if Christon stays or not, though it seems like he got an overly harsh deal at USC based on the reported incident.
UCLA has become a Transfer Portal School.

Listening to two different podcasts while working today and heard the same comment from both- USC is putting together the best recruiting staff in the country. They both said it will be a healthy competition to see which assistant will be the bring in the best recruits, and none of the assistants will out-recruit Riley. Fight On!!!!
Colin Cowherd — Fox NFL Sports Analyst Mark Sanchez was so effusive in his praise for Reggie Bush’s practice regimen and commitment to excellence while at USC, that I think I might just have to start rooting for Reggie to get his Heisman back.
I had always heard that Reggie was a first-in, last-out type practice guy, but I really had no idea — until I heard Sanchez speak of him — just what type of awe he routinely inspired in all of his team-mates, who could only stop-and-stare. “He made better plays in practice than he made in games.”

Nice job! 🎄
I am glad football recruits are looking at USC seriously again. I hope we grab some fresh linemen for the offense. I know it’s not just the head coach or the name of a head coach that makes a great team, just look at the Jacksonville head scratcher, but I am as optimistic as I have ever been about this hire. By the time I’m on winter break, we could have a recruiting class in the low teens or better.
Urban preached culture, culture, culture. Man has he just messed that up. I think he’s destined to be fired and then will have to sit out for a long while. His arrogance cost him big time.
You think it would be smart to fire Meyer? Or would it be better for him to get his head straight during an off season on how to run a professional team and use his talent. Not sure which way to go on this or if it is already to late for Meyer.
Meyer has already screwed his pooch in the NFL IMO. Grown men won’t take any of his crap, nor should they. He was great in college, but could always only go so long before imploding on some national stage, somewhere. In the beginning, I didn’t want to touch him as USC’s new HC. Too much weirdism and questionable behavior. Then I became desperate because of The Cat, and wanted Folt to give Bohn the okay to hire UM. Now we have LR, a 1000% better alternative than Meyer, who was not-long-ago seen in some bar grinding it with some petite… Read more »
Thanks Allen, I tend to agree with you, he has it appears just about reached the end of his rope. Not sure who would want him back in the college game, but I am sure someone will grab him if he doesn’t “retire” again.
Was this the kicker that got a targeting penalty? Yeah, baby—I like kickers who like to mix it up! Fight on!
Hey there, remember this 35 yd tough run by USC punter Phil Negrete against UW in 2011, helping USC to a 40-17 blowout in L.A.? “Negrete really “buckled up his chin strap” on this one.
Negrete looks like a fullback! He was wearing Sam Cunningham’s number, right?
You’re very close DDS. 6-0, 225 Negrete was #35 (bad angle!), while 6-3, 215 Sam Bam was #39.
Riley doesn’t have to go far talent that’s for sure. So Cal takes the top 5 divisions in State Championships,
OPEN Mater Dei-Santa Ana,
1-AA Cathedral Catholic-San Diego,
1-A Serra-Gardena,
2-AA Mater Dei Catholic-Chula Vista,
2-A Scripps Ranch-San Diego
He may want to take a ride down San Diego way.
