Zachariah and Zion Branch are entering the transfer portal, dealing USC another substantial blow …
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — Zachariah Branch, USC’s electric sophomore receiver and returner, and his older brother Zion, who plays safety for the Trojans, are planning to enter the transfer portal, a person familiar with the decision but not authorized to speak publicly told The Times, adding to the ever growing and long list of lauded prospects to join the exodus from Troy.
When the two brothers signed to play at USC — Zion in 2022 and Zachariah in 2023 — their separate arrivals were seen as landmark recruiting victories for Trojans coach Lincoln Riley. Zachariah Branch was a top-10 recruit and the nation’s No. 1 receiver prospect. Zion was no slouch, either — a four-star safety who checked in at 58th overall in the 2022 class.
Now as they depart USC, the Branch brothers will be no doubt two of the most coveted players in the transfer portal, with both expected to sign with their new team together.
Their exit, while not entirely unexpected, is an especially brutal blow to the Trojans, who have watched top prospects leave in droves the last two years. Zachariah, who ranked seventh in the 2023 class, is the highest-rated prospect to leave USC since Riley took over. But losing Branch continues an especially concerning trend for the Trojans coach.
Of the 12 top-100 recruits Riley signed through his first three years at USC, nine of those players have since transferred. The four five-star prospects signed in that span — Branch, cornerback Domani Jackson, wideout Duce Robinson and quarterback Malachi Nelson — have all gone elsewhere. All of the top five recruits in Riley’s initial class of 2022 have transferred out.
There’s no good outlook in such a development for USC, either signaling coaches’ initial evaluations of prospects didn’t always hit or that a slew of top home-grown talent has been increasingly unsatisfied with their development in Riley’s beleaguered program.
Zachariah Branch looked like one of the most dynamic weapons in all of college football as a freshman, as he flashed his blazing speed and playmaking ability in the open field. He became the first USC player ever named as a freshman All-American, scoring a touchdown as a receiver, rusher, and kick and punt returner.
The sky seemed like the limit for Branch — and high expectations followed — as Riley and USC’s staff challenged Branch to become a more complete receiver as a sophomore. “I think he’s done a really good job in honing in on becoming more – not just a speed guy, but a more complete receiver,” Riley said of Branch before the season.
But Branch never quite delivered on that promise in his second season. He struggled to establish himself as a vertical threat, in spite of his blazing speed, and never seemed to fit the role that Riley manufactured for him, which often asked him to catch passes in traffic downfield.
He still led the Trojans in receptions (47) but only twice in 12 games did he exceed 56 receiving yards. His dynamic returns, too, were neutralized. After a 46-yard kickoff return in USC’s season opener, Branch failed to find an opening in the return game the rest of the season. By midseason, he was replaced in that role that earned him All-American honors by fellow sophomore Makai Lemon. Eventually, Lemon would supplant him as the Trojans’ No. 1 receiver.
“I don’t play with any regrets,” Branch said late last month. “But you know, there are certain situations you can learn from. There are certain situations you can see what you did and build on that as well. I’m just trying to be better as a player.”
Over his two seasons at USC, Branch tallied 78 receptions for 823 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for an additional 87 yards and a touchdown.
“What an incredible journey it’s been here at USC,” Branch wrote on social media. “While this wasn’t an easy decision, I’m looking forward to what the future holds and excited for the new opportunities ahead.”
He’s the third of USC’s top five receivers from this season to enter the transfer portal, joining Robinson and Kyron Hudson, the latter of whom has since signed with Penn State.
Last week, before Branch joined those ranks, Riley shrugged off concerns about his receiver room. He wouldn’t comment specifically on Robinson or Hudson, but said when it came to retaining receivers at USC, “There ain’t much convincing.”
“This school’s history of receivers, our history of receivers, our history of throwing the ball at this school, there’s really not any better place to go play it,” Riley said.
Now USC finds itself in dire need of a receiver — or three — in the transfer portal. Tulsa transfer wideout Jo Williams recently visited campus, while Purdue’s Jaron Tibbs is expected to visit this weekend. USC also recently made an offer to standout Idaho wideout Jordan Dwyer. But none of the three has the five-star pedigree that Zachariah Branch brought to USC.
Zion Branch, his older brother, dealt with season-ending injuries in each of his first two seasons at USC but played in all 12 games this season as a redshirt sophomore, tallying 19 tackles and three pass breakups. He was expected to compete for a major role in USC’s secondary next season, the entirety of which will probably need to be replaced.
Riley has already added one defensive back to that room in San Jose State corner DJ Harvey. But to date, that was the Trojans’ only addition in the transfer portal.
USC has now seen 18 players enter the transfer portal since it wrapped up its 6-6 season. None are likely to be as coveted as the Branch brothers.
“Gang wtf,” wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane wrote on Twitter (X) on Tuesday, quote-tweeting a post about Branch’s departure.
Four-star receivers Tanook Hines and Romero Ison are joining USC’s roster as part of the program’s 2025 recruiting class, along with three-star Corey Simms. USC, too, is hosting Purdue transfer Jaron Tibbs for a visit this weekend, and is in the final four schools for Tulsa transfer Joseph Williams, according to Williams’ representation Black Swan Management.
Still, any additions won’t fully patch the wound of losing Branch, a true game-changing weapon whose potential never fully materialized in Cardinal-and-Gold.

Everything I’m hearing from all these football writers is that Quinton Joiner was asking for big money(the kind you pay a Heisman candidate). If that’s true and he is in it for the money, then it wouldn’t have mattered how many carries they gave him during the season. He would still have taken the best offer after the season.
Exactly, and the fact that Lemon and Lane are still with USC shows they got valued higher than Branch and Duce. Not sure what Branch and Duce were wanting, but obviously USC could not afford them. I don’t think anyone except Oregon saw this money grab coming, and Oregon was already overpaying almost everyone on the roster. Guys are going to Oregon and will sit on the bench because the money is so good. There is the new college football for ya.
Riley is getting roasted from one end of the media to the other. With Riley going down in reputation, he is dragging USC football down with him to where it is no longer pertinent. But what is the solution to rid yourself of such a calamity? You are paying 100 million plus for failure or if you fire the reason, you have paid 100 million plus just the same. USC has never been able to escape the claws of the Bush sanctions. And it continues today!
Pursue the “with cause” option citing the probation under his watch and hope there’s something there. It’s the only way to shed LR.
I’m also thinking that in addition to the salary albatross, the fact that we have an outgoing president will further gridlock any decisions.
I think we’re stuck for at least 2 more years. Maybe somebody new for 2027 season.
By then (2027), were will be irrelevant in the eyes of 90% of all potential recruits.
We’re not irrelevant now? 😉
Look at the 2026 class.
USC has to reduce expectations and accept the post above.
The expectations for next year should be a winning record and competitive in the
Big10. This is because Bohn gave Riley a 10 year contract. If very lucky get in CFP. Keep up the top 15 recruiting.
Actually Riley has some talents and might just be a late bloomer like Sark and Kiffin. This is what we can hope for.
Nice to get rid of Folt but Cohen seems like a good hire.
That’s why I wouldn’t be surprised if LR decides to find a way out of this contract. Sanity is more important than money. Even if he decides to move on tomorrow and give up the rest of the money, He’s still already received $30-40 million. How much money do you need to live on?
Na, he lives in a bubble, blissfully cashing his paycheck every week.
Just wondering if anyone on Trojan Daily Blog has any eligibility left?
Since you asked, I signed up to play football at Cal State L.A. in the late 70s but before I finished my physical conditioning class the ASB voted to remove funding to the football program. As I understand it I would have eligibility left. I am able to pass the buck, and block good ideas. Come to think of it I would be willing to be a head coach for half price. Since I was a musician I can drum up support from the band never underestimate an old guy who’s also a drummer.
Eli Sanders is USC’s latest incoming portal RB after a year at NEW MEX Paolo Uggetti/Pete Thamel (ESPN) — Former NEW MEX RB Eli Sanders (5-11, 194; 1,766 career rushing yds) has committed to USC over MICH ST. He has one year of eligibility. The Trojans will be Sanders’ third stop during his college football career after he originally transferred to the Lobos from IA ST last year. Following a three-year stint in Ames during which he totaled 703 rushing yds and four TDs, Sanders became the starter at NEW MEX last season and had his best year yet. Following… Read more »
Welcome new RB Eli Sanders.
Got this off of the internet about thee new RB commit Eli Sanders from New Mexico. “Sanders rushed for 1,063 yards and nine touchdowns for New Mexico in 2024, averaging 7.2 yards per carry. He also caught 15 passes for 134 yards. In four years split between Iowa State and New Mexico, Sanders has 305 carries for 1,766 yards and 13 touchdowns to go along with 30 receptions for 269 yards and another score. Yep…..falling apart…..it’s what happens when Admin does not properly vet candidates for head coach……and compounds the error with contract negotiations that border on incompetence. Knight, who everybody accuses of buying a team, signed Lanning initially for 29 million over 6 years. The contract also provided for a one year extension each time Oregon won 10 or more games. Obviously it’s been renegotiated but…..Lanning being about as hot a head coach property as can be still makes less than 10 million and the latest contract expires in 2031. No wonder Knight feels free to throw cash at players……not having thrown 100… Read more »
Maybe they think Zach Hanson is an up and coming star. His 2021 Tulsa team did gain 2500 yards rushing when he was the O-Line coach. But if you are talking about experience, he’s not anywheres near Josh Henson Josh coached one year as an assistant in high school in 1998 and from that time on he was either a tight ends coach, O-Line coach or OC at a major power 5 school. That’s 27 years of coaching at power 5 schools as a position coach or a co-ordinator..Zach started his career as an offensive quality control coach at K-State in… Read more »
The Brat is just phoning it in….
Gee, you make it sound like Henson is a good coach.
Would Ohio St, Michigan, Georgia,Alabama, Texas or Oregon hire a O-Line coach with a resume of Kansas St & Tulsa?
Would those same teams leave a OL coach postion open during this moment in time? Hanson is a perfect choice to maintain any chance of recruiting that you keep complaining about. It is a good choice for the existing linemen in the room as continuity will be important. I see what you are saying, but then you are assuming USC is up there with those teams, and it isn’t right now. For several reasons.
Does Hanson’s name have any pull recruiting linemen with his resume? As Parceman posted he only coached linemen at Tulsa and only offensive ends here? You can only go by what a coach has accomplished so far to gauge his value of today. Unless money is the only factor that will bring better linemen recruits to USC, how does Zach Hanson excite linemen recruits? I think it is safe to say Riley has been of little help recruiting the big uglies? Maybe as you say Hanson may calm down concerns of existing linemen on the team who are still here.… Read more »
Just Tulsa….he was never the O-Line coach at K-State
The O-Line was good (not great) at the end of the year
Yes I agree, they improved over the season. Better than I thought they would.
Can he recruit?
Is Jen saving money promoting a coach to a new position so she can afford a GM to babysit the brat?
Apparently, nobody wants to babysit The Brat. Would you?
It’ll be exceptionally interesting to see who USC finally convinces to take over this GM position. Will they just be a paper tiger? Will they be adequately qualified and have any independence? How much say will LR have in the pick? Will they be strong enough to actually help the program by standing up to LR and fixing the areas where he’s just not the best judge of what to do?
Jen’s really under the gun here. Hope she is up to the mountain of football tasks ahead.
If USC hires a GM, what will they do with Emerick who carries the GM title now? Not sure what he does, but it seems it could be more.
Tell him to find another job.
Time will tell
Tosh Lupoi can, and we missed the boat on that one.
I really think that one of 2 things are going to happen. Either he will get this program together or he will find a way to give up some of his money by making a deal with SC so he can get out of this nightmare early. People are viewing him like he is a modern day Adolph Hitler. Trump had a lot of people calling him Hitler(and still do) but he has even more people who love him. LR doesn’t have anyone who even likes him. This guy has even more people who hate him than Clay Helton did.… Read more »
The question is does USC care enough about football, or is DEI and woke stuff more important to them.
I think that they are trying to find a great coach. Hiring LR, at the time, looked like a great hire.Even Paul Finebaum said he thought it was a great hire and USC would soon win an NC soon. Unfortunately, he has so far turned into the bust of the century.
“Bust of the Century”
That’s a darn big bust, certainly worthy of a bumper sticker or pinback button, wouldn’t you say!? 😂
I would call it a $110 million bust
Riely had been to the playoffs. That stood for a lot. USC and Riley got screwed by Bohn and the USC fear of the ncaa. Now can they catch up?
Carusio was calling the shots at the end, not Bohn.
An interesting question here is why has he bombed out? He had the star image at Oklahoma, but time was running out on him there. Okla. fans demanded an NC. LR’s main shortfall was his assistant coaches. Grinch was the prime example. The bottom line is that LR simply dos not have what it takes to be a successful HC. Now we see that he is unable to hire top talent for his assistant coaches. This is not likely to turn around. Players are leaving in droves, as we are up to 18 as of now. The replacements from the… Read more »
How underwhelming! Josh Henson is replaced by promoting Zach Hanson. Zach played OT for Kansas St and OL coach for K State and Tulsa. No NFL experience as player or coach. Not what I was hoping for.
Either the brat just flat out doesn’t care anymore, he still thinks he and his offense alone can win no matter who his line coach is or he was told the current budget for coaching staff holds. You’re on your own LR, make do with what you have! Wish I was a fly on a wall in Jen’s office right now.
If you were a big-time OL coach, why would you ever want to come from wherever and risk your career path with a major disappointing coach hanging on by his fingernails (and clutching his huge bank account) like Lincoln Riley? This in-house move was so predictable, and undoubtedly the only option because the USC football program has absolutely no momentum with Riley in charge. Zero. USC football now seems to enjoy living in the world of the mid-majors. Riley — “In addition to coaching our tight ends and being an outstanding recruiter, Zach has been instrumental in working with our… Read more »
Hoping we would never have to go through those years again when the Cat brought another assistant coach and everyone asked who?
The Cat went 8-4 this year and has been the HC at GA SO ever since he left USC. Alex Grinch is already the new DC at UCF. It’s not even 2025 yet and LR’s the most unpopular coach at USC since Paul Hackett, who only lasted three years at USC. Maybe, somehow, The Brat can get USC into the running for a playoff spot by 2026. The majority of us Trojan fans have been forced to greatly lower our USC football expectations as 2025 seems like another bad bowl game year. Does anyone here honestly think the USC coaching… Read more »
No way. Just don’t have the Jimmys and Joes.
Now we will have a new name to blame for the lack of offense. This was probably a move to prevent anyone who may be thinking of committing to change their minds. So now they need two coaches still.
Hey GT, you sound like we are still in the PC days where coaches and players were lined up to come to USC. Those days are long gone, USC is caught in a mediocre quagmire. Thing about Hanson is he knows the offense. Bring in an NFL guy and things go south real fast between him and LR. Some of the talk I hear is that this may be the last of the wild west NIL, and kids are going for it now. Every school is losing kids. USC would have been in the running for a lot of players… Read more »
Well, they have similar names(Henson….Hanson). Maybe the recruits won’t notice the difference. A little humor there……very little.
He was an O-Line coach at Tulsa. At K-State he was a offensive quality control coach and a GA.
In 2018, he was the tight ends coach and assistant offensive line coach at Kansas State. Anyway, underwhelming.
Now that Hensen is leaving, the brat needs to hire a line coach similar to status of what the top 5-programs have. Fortunately so far he has replaced his original coaches with better ones having top resumes. O-line position is so important in winning games in a physically demanding conference. I just can’t see the brat chancing an underwhelming new hire knowing he will get blasted as incompetent. He can’t fail anymore. He has used up all his get-out-of-jail chances. Then his next hire needs to be a recruiting director that can lead the way supplying this program with the… Read more »
It’s probably time to panic at USC Andy Staples (on3.com) — Lincoln Riley hadn’t played a Big Ten game yet and was already on the defensive. As a group of reporters huddled around him on the morning of his Big Ten media days appearance in July, the USC coach mixed bravado and excuses as he previewed the season to come. “We are at the top of the Big Ten conference. We’re at the top of any conference. I don’t ever look at ourselves as below anybody, and I never will,” Riley said. “Look where Ohio State and Oregon were two years ago. Look at what they… Read more »
Allen what you posted yesterday saying you have never seen Trojan football in such bad shape, it hit me hard as with your knowledge in CFB you know what you are talking about. Jen Cohend & Lincoln Riley can’t use the excuse CFB has changed so much it’s hard to keep up? Well the top programs across the nation have kept up and not gone anywhere. This bleeding going on here watching a once proud flagship program dissenigrate is seen across the nation as a victim of itself. And how CFB loves seeing this. PROBABLY??
Mr. Staples that is the understatement of the millennium.
I guess the transfer portal for fans isn’t as volatile as it is for players. I haven’t seen too many transfers from the TDB. I had one foot Inside another blog for a while when I first transferred here, but I have both feet here now. Here I regularly interact with blog owners as well as other members of the fan base. I think JC needs to tell the Brat that you will be head coach in name only and will have zero responsibilities except to study film of our own practice sessions and games. Make him miserable until he comes to the table with a reasonable offer to resign. He really should be refunding the university the majority of the salary he received over the last two seasons, anyway.
If that won’t work, put him in charge of the team’s laundry. He needs to slink off somewhere else.
What JCohen really needs to do is tell LR she will hire an offensive staff equal to the D staff. She tells him he will turn over game plan and play calling to the OC. House of Victory also needs to tell him he needs to follow orders if he wants any NIL. I think if he quits trying to do it all he will be a much better HC. JC can then line up Pete Carroll to mentor LR in PR.

I wonder who Bear will convince to take him on? Million dollar body with a 10-cent brain.
I’m sure there are more than a few on this list who would have had more playing time next season. If I could convince two to stay I’d pick #12
as they are the among the best still available players. I would say good riddance to the Bear and Branchs as legends in their own minds.
It’s not about playing time or NIL for the offensive guys. Quality players are looking for quality coaching to get to the next level. They can’t get that on offense at USC. Henson’s departure is an opportunity to upgrade the staff. Some of these guys will really shine with good coaching.
Nineteen departures would be tolerable if we were bringing good players in to replace them. But right now the score is 19 transferring out and 1 transferring in. NOT GOOD!!!!
We had 30 last season.

Some SOBs just fail upward….
As Henson did.
Maybe Grinch is just a good position coach but not a good co-ordinator. Wisconsin was 14th in the nation in 2024 in pass defense.
OU fans are definitely still ecstatic that Riley took Grinch with him. I know why. Grinch was the worst DC I ever saw at USC… Dekota Gregory (Stormin’ In Norman) — For some reason, people are still trusting Alex Grinch to lead their defenses. UCF on Tuesday announced that it hired Grinch as its new defensive coordinator under new (old) head coach Scott Frost. And basically any fan base of a program where Grinch has been wondered why. Grinch was Oklahoma’s defensive coordinator and safeties coach under Lincoln Riley in 2019-21. In 2021, Grinch’s final season in Norman, the Sooners… Read more »
It seems these days that the NIL money is more important than playing for a blue blood football program and being drafted into the NFL. I seem to recall that 57 players on our 1972 undefeated National Championship team were eventually drafted into the NFL. Kids these days want the money now, so NIL comes into play. Why USC isn’t better with its NIL presence baffles me, but it’s a discussion for another day.
It’s pretty evident that USC has become Prima Donna University, starting with the coach. The Brat is the wurst human on the sidelines this season (see what I did there?) This mindset has become “Fight On for Playing Time. Our men Fight on for me, me me.” While I do understand wanting to play, I wonder why players like Duce and Joyner weren’t used more effectively. The Brat is losing games, players and coaches. How is he still even employed. Stubborn Lincoln Riley (my new SLR) is a cancer, who may make it impossible to ever find a magical coach… Read more »
If I might be so bold as to offer a suggestion on an otherwise excellent post RT, how about Stinkin Lincoln? Has a lovely sound to it and let’s face it, he does.
CBS ranked the head coaches of each team in the playoffs
The answer, Mr. Kartje, is an obvious, emphatic and and resounding YES.
So Josh Henson leaving should be viewed as good news in a week of nothing but bad. The question is was Henson asked to leave or did he do it all on his own? If the former then this is really good news. Time for Jen Cohen to step up and take charge. Riley needs to be told that Jen is going to get him an OC and an OL coach and a WR coach and he WILL delegate the offense to the OC. As we all know Riley is too expensive to fire. But he can be told what… Read more »
