USC WR Bru McCoy arrested for intimate partner violence with injury
USC WR temporarily suspended from team activities following arrest
Adam Grosbard (OC Register) — USC wide receiver Bru McCoy was arrested on July 24 on suspicion of felony intimate partner violence with injury, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed on Monday.
McCoy, 21, was placed on $50,000 bail and released from jail the same night as his arrest. Police responded to the incident around 5:30 p.m. that evening. No charges have been filed against McCoy at this time, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office confirmed.
In a statement when contacted about the arrest, USC athletics said that McCoy has been temporarily suspended from team activities.
“USC does not condone violence of any kind. We are aware of the situation, and USC’s Office for Equity, Equal Opportunity, and Title IX is reviewing it,” the statement from USC read. “Because of federal student privacy laws, we are unable to share additional information at this time.”
McCoy is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 24.
McCoy enrolled at USC in 2019 for the spring semester after graduating early from Mater Dei. Soon after, he transferred to Texas and participated in spring practice with the Longhorns. But he transferred back to USC that summer.
After redshirting in 2019 (mysterious illness), McCoy started in half of USC’s six games in 2020, recording 21 receptions for 236 yards and two touchdowns.

McCoy has been a huge disappointment ever since he left Mater Dei. He commits to USC, then goes to Texas, then back to USC, then he has some mystery illness, drops key passes in the PAC-12 Championship Game last year and now is facing serious charges with the law. I don’t care how talented this guy is, bottom line for me is don’t let him back on the team.
Good to see Trojan alum April Ross and her playing partner Alix Klineman win the Gold Medal in Beach Volleyball for the USA. April is a fighter and is the true epitome of “Fight On”! Way to go ladies!!
USC’s Andre De Grasse (running for Canada) won the Olympic gold 200m medal (19.62) earlier today, adding to his Olympic games collection. American runners won the Silver and Bronze medals.
was in Austin for work and had some fun conversations. All the Texas guys agreed that Clay Helton is a mess. One said “if Tom Herman is out coaching you, you’re not a very good coach”.
side note- not one of them have any recollection of Sark coaching anywhere else but Alabama. It’s funny to hear them talk like he is greatest offensive mind in college football history.
The famous Saban Rehab has literally become an integral aspect of the CFB head coaching community. Nick Saban has had 12 of his Alabama assistants become head coaches. When assts of The Cat (er, Jar Jar) leave USC, they may never coach again. fansided.com — “Saban is the coach-maker with Steve Sarkisian becoming the 12th assistant on his staff at Alabama to get a head coaching job. Well Sark has been sober for nearly 6 years, guess that should give some confidence he has that beast in the cage. Outside of 2015, he’s been a very good coach. I would have him back over Helton in a heart beat.
Can you think of a coach in the Pac who you would take Helton over? I cannot. I would not want most of them (particularly Chocolate Chip), but even Chocolate Chip is a better coach than Helton.
Funny how I’ve started to lose so much faith in STAN’s David Shaw the last few years. Many Cardinal fans have also soured on the coach who is the winningest in Cardinal history.
He bounced back last year but went 4-8 in 2019, when USC won 45-20.
I think STAN might have a losing season again this year.
As much as it pains me to admit this Allen, much of Shaw’s early success is because of Harbaugh and what he was able to build (a definite abrasive ass in my eyes).
Yes, Shaw does know defense — but IMHO, offense not so much — where he’s average at best.
Harbaugh may not be popular, but he was exceptional at STAN, leading them to a 12-1 record and Orange Bowl win in 2010. He beat ‘What’s your deal” Carroll bad 55-21 in 2009.
I would LOVE to see MICH finally beat OHIO ST this year. What a brutally bad losing streak it’s been for the Wolverines in this great rivalry!
Alabama HC Nick Saban Will Receive At Least $84.8M Under New 8-Year Contract Alabama football coach Nick Saban will receive a new contract extension worth an average of $10.6 million per year through the 2028 season, according to Alex Scarborough of ESPN. There are also significant incentives in the contract, including $800,000 for winning a national championship and $125,000 for winning an SEC title. Saban has a good chance to cash in on these incentives considering his success over 15 years with the Crimson Tide, featuring six national championships. Alabama has won the conference title in five of the last seven years. Including his… Read more »
The Minnesota Vikings released 2020 first-round draft pick Jeff Gladney on Tuesday. The team announced the move in a statement, citing Gladney being indicted on a felony domestic violence charge in Texas.
The team said it takes “these matters very seriously” and that it condemns “all forms of domestic violence.”
Gladney, 24, was arrested in April after allegedly assaulting his now ex-girlfriend.
Gladney’s agent released a statement Tuesday, saying the indictment “does not speak to [Gladney’s] guilt or innocence.” yahoo.com
It’s like Star Wars. The SEC, the Evil Empire, needs to be stopped by the Force, Big 12/Pac-12 combo, of some sort or another. For all I know, these Big 12 teams are a great fit, at least when you look ahead 20 years and try to picture what CFB will be like then.
You tell me @RialtoTrojan: EWOK The Ewoks are sentient-furred bipeds native to the moon of Endor. They are curious individuals that stand about one meter tall. They are extremely skilled in forest survival and the construction of primitive technology like gliders and catapults. They are quick learners when exposed to advanced technology, however. The Ewoks accepted members of the Rebel Alliance into their tribe, and allied themselves to their cause. The Ewoks helped in the ground battle to destroy the Imperial shield generator built in their forests, and their primitive weapons felled the stormtroopers and the scout walkers of the… Read more »
You are right although they were considered primitive they did engineer a pretty interesting defeat of the technical Empire. So let’s go with Jar-Jar Binks. He stumbled through a battle and was elevated to general. Became a senator by appointment of the Emperor (who turned out to be the bad guy!) Better fit?

After reading countless articles the last 2 weeks and listening to many voices from across the country I can’t say with certainty what is going to happen with CFB, the Pac-12 or USC. But I do have thoughts & opinions. 1–USC should leverage its history & power of its brand. The days of splitting revenue equally with Oregon State & WSU are over. SC moves the needle. OSU/WSU do not. 2–If it is better for USC to move to the BIG10 or the SEC , do it. If leaving the PAC-12 is better for USC , do it. 3– The… Read more »
You pretty much covered it @Trojan5. Making USC great again is going to require a lot of steps, and a lot of commitments made.
Ever since I heard about the TEXAS/OU (always follows big daddy TEXAS) defection, I’ve always thought USC’s mixing and matching somehow heavily with the Big Ten would be a good idea.
USC should play OHIO ST or MICH at least every other year.
I liked your comment that the Pac without SC and OR is very much like the Mountain West. IF Nike decides it is best for the Ducks to move, they will. I really do not know how Nike makes its decisions. We know you can count on the SC Football Management to mess it up.
Trojan 5, Great analysis. I concur with Allen (and you). SC should leave the Pac and join the Big 10. He and I both doubt it will happen, but that is the correct move. I totally agree that the remnant of the Big 12 has nothing to offer. The B12 correct move is to add SMU and Houston, try to keep WVa (my guess is WVA goes to the ACC) and then poach Utah and CO from the Pac 12. Utah’s correct move, IMO, is to leave the Pac and join the Big 12. It could be the big dog… Read more »
Very disappointed in McCoy. He showed potential last season to be a real special player and now he will probably never play again for SC. What a waste of talent for some foolish crime.
Bru is done at USC and very possibly completely out of football for the rest of his life. The USC title IX office will make sure that Bru does not step foot on campus again. Doesn’t matter if the event happened or not.
Ya, it is too bad Bru went and got himself arrested for a serious felony (“willfully inflicts corporal injury resulting in a traumatic condition” upon a spouse, former spouse, cohabitant or dating partner) by the LAPD, along with a $50,000 bail marker. Not much of a resume builder, is he? 247Sports.com — “Sources with knowledge of McCoy’s situation have suggested it is unlikely McCoy will see the field in 2021 due to the serious nature of the allegations.” Troubles and negative mystery of one weird sort or another have seemed to trail this former Mater Dei superstar after HS. “felony intimate partner violence with injury”? Where have I been? Is this the new term for domestic violence/sexual assault? Whatever you call it, he’s done with football, especially if he does time. Hope he gets help to get his life back together. After all his drama, at 21, he only played in 6 college games!
Now he’s waiting to see if the shoe drops from the L.A. District Attorney. Bru’s got much bigger problems right now than whether he plays for USC in 2021, which seems ridiculously doubtful since he won’t even be appearing in court until Nov. 24, unless something changes. How do they set an appearance date if no charges have been filed? These dire actions on the part of some of our young college athletes seem so nonsensical as to be barely comprehensible. I guess the old adage, “You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone,” needs to be reinforced much… Read more »
Given what happened to Matt B, he will not be allowed on campus. And, even if the DA does not file, he stands zero chance in front of the SC Title IX group. Probably wise if he enters the transfer portal right now, hopes the DA does not file, and then takes a year or two off football.
I don’t think you can automatically assume that USC will treat Bru McCoy the way the Title IX offices at USC treated Matt B. USC’s Title IX enforcement has come under harsh and significant criticism, both in the L.A. press as well as in the courts because of Matt B. “Due process” has now entered the picture at USC in terms of its Title IX actions. Personally, I don’t care if McCoy plays another down at USC. But if he takes a year or two off from football, especially in view of the fact he hasn’t played much at USC… Read more »
The tip play was against the Sun Devils. I had never seen it done before and I doubt I will ever see it again. I also have never seen an onside kick like Bru then recovered (it was perfect – he ran down the side line and it was like the kicker “passed it” to him over and behind the row of defenders seeking to recover it). I doubt I will ever see another one like it again. You and I may be the only ones who will remember Bru McCoy for these incredible plays.
I still can’t believe USC beat ASU that day. It could (or should) cause me to completely re-evaluate how I think about “destiny”, because the Trojans were somehow destined to beat the Sun Devils on Nov. 7 in L.A. I saw it happen on TV, so I know it did. What a wild, crazy win that was with USC rallying desperately for a 28-27 win after trailing by 13 late. Because of the late onside kick recovery, it reminded me of UCLA beating USC 20-16 in the horrible 1965 Beban Bomb game, the first USC game I ever attended at… Read more »
I thought I posted this but??? He’s gone from stud to dud with this stuff. I used to say innocent until proven guilty, but I cannot bring myself to say it any more. I thought he was the real McCoy, but I think he’s done in college football.
Well, the police believe the girl and made the arrest. If McCoy avoids being formally charged, he’s got an outside shot. Otherwise, he may as well hang up his cleats at USC IMO. I’m already thinking of him as a former Trojan football player. Hopefully, he somehow avoids this fate.
Unless this is a total set up (and who knows), he stands zero chance. Even if it is a total set up, he stands next to zero chance. Remember the kid who one semester from graduating and was picked up by a girl in a bar, took him to her apartment, had sex, and then charged him with rape? When the video camera at the girl’s apartment showed her leading him by the hand into her apartment, the DA tossed the case. PAC 12 and BIG 12 meeting today. Not sure what value they bring without the other two, but it would be interesting.
